  • I received a request to make a video on the pros and cons of a Golden Conure.
    The request included the acknowledgment that I might make a video with all pros!
    I think Golden Conures are amazing, easily one of the best parrot companions you could hope to experience! However there are one or two cons, what are these?

    Thank you for the video. Golden conures are one if my absolute dream birds and this video only reinforced it. I'm 14 with two other birds, a cockatiel and sun conure. I really don't want another bird until I'm independent as I don't provide as much as I'd like for my current birds (they're in no way neglected, I just hold very high standards for my care and since my family owns several different animals, they're confined to my room, aka the bird room. My cockatiel has an aviary fit for a CAG, and my sun conure has the A&E 32" flight cage, which I'll be upgrading next year when I save up some money from Christmas and my birthday. I just bought them a giant wooden play stand from Marketplace for super cheap. We're gonna be building an aviary in the backyard too). I'm about to start free flight training my sun conure, Zelda, and I think it would be great for her to have a flight buddy. Zelda tends to be very jealous when I'm paying attention to my cockatiel, Rainbow, and will act out. Rainbow isn't any better though. He hasn't been housed with other birds for the last 8 years and was severely neglected for 7 of them, so he's very notorious for fear based aggression. Considering how much larger Zelda is than him, I don't think his fear is unjustified. Hearing golden conures are typically very easy going with other birds soothes me. I'd rather rescue, but they're so uncommon I may have to find a breeder. Thank you for the great video.

      Thanks for posting to me! My daughter, who got me addicted to parrots, is a year older than you. I think she's super-lucky to have so many parrots in our home :)
      I just did a video on where to get a parrot, a rescue, breeder or store/re-homed parrot. I think it's important to get the "right" bird that you click with - and I agree, you probably won't find a Golden at a Rescue. It was hard for me to find one and I know two breeders!
      You sound very dedicated to your parrots, that's heart-warming to see. I also think you are brave to free-fly your Sun. Our Mac'Girls, as I call our two Macaws, get to be outback and fly around in an enclosed area. They are lucky Mac'Girls - they spend most their day out back doing as they please. I wouldn't free-fly though. I don't have the time to dedicate to it and I'm afraid. I wouldn't want anything to happen to them.
      Keep me updated, I love hearing about other parrot-lovers, their birds and the bliss they are enjoying!

    Yes I’m still glad. 😀😀😀😂😂😂. I can vouch for all the pros and some of the cons. We haven’t and sure hope ours never gets sick. That scares the hell out of me. They are so precious and lovable. Ours has adapted to all three, na, four (including grandpa) family members with no issues. But I think she likes me the best 😜😜😜. Ours is a bit lazy on the nut department. She either refuses or doesn’t know how to open them. It’s a work in progress. But on the positive side, she loves pellets.
    We are currently trying to potty train her. Not successful yet. Have you done that and if so any hints. We are trying to be consistent and timely, but sometimes she surprises us. But then again it’s only been a month in her new forever home. So we need to be patient. Any hints over all would be appreciated. Great videos as always and thanks.

    Wow, such a loving bird, totally amazing. I initially was considering to get a Galah Cockatoo due to its interactive nature however, after weighing up the pros and cons I have come to the conclusion of not getting one as it won’t fit in with my family.
    So I have now found a breeder who has Golden Conures and put my name forward to be on the waiting list and I have been placed number 1 on the list, so I can’t wait.
    The Golden Conure will fit right into my family.
    Please would be able to answer the following questions, I will appreciate it if you can do so.
    I would appreciate if you can give any guidance and share some of your experiences. I had a some questions and was hoping if you can help.
    1. Are they good family birds?
    Think you have answered that in your videos.
    2. Do they get aggressive or attack any of your family?
    3. Do they mingle with all the family? Or are they a single person bird?
    I think you have answered this question in your videos.
    4. Are they easy to handle?
    5. Any issues with allergies? Are they dusty birds! (My youngest has asthma)
    6. Are they loud birds?
    7. Would they be ok for young children (I have a 6 and a 8 year old daughter, both love birds). My girls are well behaved and understand boundaries.
    8. Any concerns which you have identified?
    Any help I will be ever so grateful and so appreciative. Thank you for your time.
    Shahed

      The asthma would scare me - parrots all produce some dander. No, Golden Conures don't produce as much as, say a Gallah, but they all 'shed' some. The worst part is that it is a fine 'dust.' We have hepafilters that we run all of the time to do what we can to keep the air clean for them and us.
      No, I have not experienced an aggressive Golden. If you get one as a baby and always handle them, you should not have issues. However, when they hit their "teenage" years and are hormonal, things can change. If I have a chance, I'll talk about this more in a vid.

    • @DirectarAmi
      @DirectarAmi 3 года назад

      @@ParrotBliss thank you for the reply. I think making a video when they are teenagers will be interesting. I’m guessing the demeanour changes and they won’t be as cuddly or friendly?

    What a beautiful baby! I know nobody asked me but I feel it would be helpful to a lot of people to know you should never let your parrot put it's beak in your mouth, or even let it eat food off your fork and don't kiss them on their beaks. Talk to your avian vet about it because you can make your birds very sick by allowing that.

    So do these type of birds NEVER bite? I would like to buy one for my mum someday & I want to totally make sure that they're friendly all the time. They're quite expensive... 😬

    • @ParrotBliss
      @ParrotBliss  2 года назад

      Any scared bird can and will bite- they should always be thought of that way.
      Yes, they are expensive, but this species tends to be less likely to bite.

    We are really interested in adding to our bird family.

    I don't mean to sound rude but isn't human human saliva toxic for them? and he puts his beak in your mouth? Also I read in a guide to a well behaved parrot book that putting them on your shoulder or letting them bite your face can cause serious injuries. Cases of people's eyes getting bit and severely damaged. or severe damage to their lips etc.. Just wanted to comment on that and would love you're response.

    • @ParrotBliss
      @ParrotBliss  2 года назад +1

      Thanks for posting And for being so sweet about it. Yes, it is said that human saliva is not good for parrots, although we have different bacteria which means we get different diseases with very few exceptions. So it is something that I could learn more about. In any case I try to discourage it. Again yes, a lot of people say that you shouldn't let your parent on your shoulder. I think that is particularly true with the larger parrot that can do a lot of damage. I think it has a lot to do with the level of comfort and trust you have with your parrot. For me, it depends on the bird. The Golden Conyers, for example, are so sweet that I don't feel concerned at all.

      @ParrotBliss  2 года назад +1

      Golden Conures are just phenomenal - but all parrots can be loud, each to their own degree. Goldens can be too, but she’s usually not. Do you have a parrot now?

      @@ParrotBliss Thank you for responding. No I do not. To be honest a little afraid to get one agin due to my sensitivity to sounds. My small dog can be extremly high pitch, she has so many diffrent sounds. Its more the constant sound I struggle with and the extrmey high pitch screams and repeated often. Budgies and love birds are a no go due to the constant sound. I considered Parottlets, Linnies and Bourks. All super rare in Norway, especialy who is used to hands. And I dont think there are any golden conures in Norway. So I kind gave it up for now at least, and got a bunch of other animals instead. I consider them for the furture. How much time a day so you use for social time with the parrots. I mean your birds seem very happy, but you have limited time like the rest of us. I know parrots need a lot of social time, maybe less if they are two. And its best to have two I asume. With a my dream house with high cellings down the line maybe two golden conures will roam the flying space 😅 These birds seem to even be able to come with me on a horse ride in the forrest in the summer, because they seem so happy to just come along for cuddles.

      Pretty much the same as an African Grey or Cape parrot - I don’t have that info on me, but you can find it in my new book on Amazon.com called Get To Know African Grey & Cape Parrots

    I think you're cuddling "toooo much with this little angel". Should be getting a teddy bear for that purposes !!! Sending the wrong messages to the bird and viewers (specially to first time bird owners ! )
    If anybody happen to own a horse, should treat it like a horse ... I you own a fish you'll treat it like a fish ... So therefore if anybody own a bird ... PLEASE TREAT THEM LIKE BIRDS !
    Like Birds = UNCAGED, Since cages are one of our many tools ( Should Never be their permanent residence.) UNCLIPPED, same way we wouldn't like to wear hand cuffs whole day long!
    This beautiful creatures can get hormonal with these wrong human interactions. Many time with serious consequences ( aggression, unpredictable, feathers plucker, territorial reactions, etc.)
    Thank you for the opportunity to comment.

      So true - I'm an advocate of treating a bird like a bird. I don't force my birds for anything. Some want NO pets. However, my guess is that you aren't familiar with Golen Conures/Queen of Bavaria. This species is super-affectionate with other birds and people. Just the way they are-
