I've gone through 2 Engines in my 96 spx, I've tore them down well and they run well when everything is put together properly and is well lubricated lol. These are solid engines, they produce alot of good low-end torque, and without rave valves or counterbalance shafts they are really simple to rebuild.
@@SeadooRefurb Yeah, I kept having rotten luck with my ski I got from my uncle who passed away last year, got it from him in 2016, needed everything. All of the electronics were fried, engine was toast, pump needed rebuilt, etc. rebuilt everything but learned the hard way that aftermarket replacement parts are a waste of money as they don't last, stuff breaks, and then your stuck up on the river and broke in more ways than one. Once I kept looking through the shop manual countless times, I learned more and more each time I looked through it about my ski. I've also learned with engines and anything on these old skis that you need to do the job 100% and buy all new fasteners. I've wasted alot of money on things that were completely preventable but were a good learning experience for me.
I know this is a old post. I am restoring a old 717 ski. I noticed that you didn't put in the thrust spacers between the piston and needle bearing.. curious how it ran?
No water but I would have if I did not go back and install the Head rubber gasket that I forgot to install the first time . Editing your own videos has it advantages !
I saw that and had to back up. I thought I was crazy until the end. Where your install video. I have a 98 sportster 1800 and the right engine runs but has leaking crankshaft seals. Planning on rebuild this winter. It was from non use. Should I just do the crankshaft? My guess is yes. Only fix whats broke, lol
@@scottjefferson3636 If the inner seals are ok and the crank still has good bearings then no need to change the crank. You will have to do a full tear down to get at the seals.
How do you know if inner seals are good. Plus I'm already that far in right. WSM crankshaft is like $245 shipped. Oil gets into the cylinders in one week
I will post kit details going forward. Most times I am searching online in many different places to find parts. Watercraft superstore and ebay are the most used by me.
I noticed you put some type of permatex under your gaskets, what is that? It looks like the service manual shows the gasket installed dry. Nice video BTW!
Ultra grey. As these engines age the surfaces get small pits in them. I just use it as an extra precaution. ( It would be a shame to do all that work and then have a gasket leak.
This video is helpful. But it would be WAY more helpful if he would mention what torque specs, grease oil he's using. I'm not sure what torque spec my head needs to be at.
Great video, it's really going to help as I put my engine back together. In the 45th minute when you put the small o-rings for the spark plug areas, I noticed that you didn't install the o-ring (manufacturer P/N 420831550) that goes around the perimeter of the head as is shown in the shop manual between the head and the head cover. I ask because my didn't have one when I pulled it apart. Should it be installed? I noticed on one of the parts site that it says that it's been discontinued by the manufacturer.
They did sound strange on the camera microphone but they were actually super smooth . you do have a good ear. That machine is stil running strong as ever.
Matt - your video gave me the confidence to rebuild my 2001 GTI 717 engine b/c one of the rods was busted. Had your video playing as I did each step. I got it all back together and it fires up and runs but I have 2 small issues. A - from cold I can only get it to initially fire up with a squirt of gas in the carbs. After its fine and restarts fine. B - a compression test only shows about 90 psi in each cylinder. New pistons new rings all new gaskets etc. Any thoughts on these? Appreciate you time!
Update- saw a video that said not to use the harbor freight compression tester bc the valve is at the gauge not down on the end of the hose. Borrowed one from auto parts shop and I get 125psi in both cylinders cold. I’ve read that you want 150. Is 125 ok? Can’t believe the gauge made a 30+ point difference.
Hi Matt have a 787 , I need to rebuild. As you are in Ontario I have a few questions, what did you use to clean all you engine part, also who did the cylinder work and where do you recommend getting parts from around here. Thanks Doug
All the engine cases were washed with warm water and soap. I also used a mild degreaser. If you are looking for used parts then ebay is where I get them from. New parts can be ordered by any seadoo dealer.
Thank you for this video. It will greatly help out just incase something ever happened to mines. Im pretty sure its the same motor i got in my 1997 seadoo bombardier gts i recently gifted. What oil do you recommend to mix with gas for this motor? I was recomeded the amsoil interceptor, xps2, and lucas oil semi synthetic 2cycl oil? Also i read to use race gas with no ethonal in it. Where can i find that? All gas station have ethanol in it fon they?
Any TCW3 2stroke oil will work just fine. Premium fuel that has 91 + octane does not have ethanol here . The ethanol is what messes up the fuel system.
@@SeadooRefurb thank you. I know really little about watercraft stuff. I have been doing alot of googling and youtube video searches to get some info on this jetski but doesn't seem to find out alot about them. If this was your only jetski and you plan on keeping it for its whole life and spending on the best stuff for it, What brand and model oil would you get? Oh and will chevron 91 octane with techtron be the best gas for it? What would you feed her for the best health possible. Lol im sorry dont mean to be a bug on you but im beating my head on this since i had it. Oh one last question on the 717 engine which ngk br8es (solid 3961vs screw on 5422) should i put in?
Great video. I didn't see you tighten the PTO Flywheel. How do you suggest "locking" up the motor to tighten? I have heard of horror stories with the rope method.
Awesome video!!! I just got a 97 GTI that has been setting for 15 years. Any advice for me! I sent the computer to get a couple keys. Ran a bore scope in the cylinders. Had some very light surface rust by the intake port, but it looks good and I can still see the cross hatch in most of it. Drained the fuel and oil replaced the plugs and going to replace the fuel lines. Anything on top of that you would recommend?
@@DuskPancake very simple process. I sent the computer and within a week or two had tow brand new keys. I can't remember who I sent it to. Get on the two stroke sea doo pages. They will point u in the right direction.

Why do you put sealer on the cylinder base gasket? Unnecessary. And are those steel sleeve cylinders like the rotary valve sled motors? Able to bore and hone? No Nikasil?
Pull the head off and have a look. There are 2 red o rings around the spark plug holes that could be damaged or it could be a crack in the cylinder somewhere. Really hard to tell without looking at it.

new pistons come wth cage bearings so no washers.
Did you line the bolts up in the middle on the stator so the engine would be timed
This may sound like a crazy question, but can I have 2 different types of pistons with the same diameter in the engine?
You sure can. If there was one bad cylinder and one good then someone may have only bored one cylinder.
I like 2 strokes but chances are your going to have to have the engine rebuilt every few years
Put a little 2 stroke in the fuel or run premix and they will go on forever. Most if not all the failures I have seen is due to lack of lubrication.
