  • Rocket League has faced a growing problem with it's rank ladders, one that is pretty unique to the game itself, and one without a concrete solution. So what is this rank issue? And how are Psyonix going to solve it?

      Thanks for the time on this one, it was interesting! I personally think each rank has its variances not only because of player count ratios but also the skills required to excel in said rank. As most people like the flashy mechanics and to 'flex', they do better in 2's because it encapsulates the methods of fancier solo goals (classic ignoring the easy centre pass for an open net). It essentially is the most 'ball chasing' mode of the three main modes, so it has more like minded players up to the highest GC ranks which cancels out a lot of the faults of that style. In 3's, this gets exposed much more, there are more players to 'beat' with the mechanics and there is less boost available as it is shared out more by good rotation. Many low Gc's are in the diamond and low champ ranks not because of play time or player count, but purely because of the additional dimensional thinking required for 2 more players on the field. If I make sense. Essentially, its a more complex mode that still requires skill but one of which is more varied and spread across a variety of attributes, not just fancy mechanics. Tactical>technical. 1's is so damn hard because it is a much more pressure filled mode, it lasts forever as it typically has a much higher goal count and doesn't have team mates to watch your successes or cover your errors. I am a GC in 2's but in 1's, I either smash it against other GC's or fumble it against Diamond 2's. I have high anxiety so its sadly not for me!
      Its probably why Snow day has GC's at Plat ranks or why Diamonds are very good at Dropshot. Hoops is fairy balanced to be fair. Waffling over!

      Fantastic video as always and i love the topics you cover and conversations you start!
      I disagree with your suggestion of the daily MMR drop. i think it more punishes those who don't play as often and rewards those heavy grinders who arent deserving of their ranks in the first place and i think it is those people who were targetted by this harsher MMR reset because then they need to grind their 51% win-rate for either hundreds of games or even multiple seasons to get back to their inflated ranks.
      As a player who barely has time to play but who when does usually dusts the cobwebs off quickly to get back to the same level... I think a possible better solution would be to both give more than 10 placements per mode each season e.g. 20, with a far bigger MMR + or - for each game of placements to a point where it is more strictly reaccessing a players skill level, but with a more scientific number of games. That way these 51% win rate grinders wont be able to start so high.
      Then my main want is to proportion the base season reset MMR drop a player has each season in relation to the amount of games they played in that competitive mode in the prior season...
      E.g. I am a GC1-2 player but i played

    Makes sense to me. In 2s, it's easy to communicate with a single person, rotation is self explanatory, and there is enough space to take your time with mechanical setups. In 3s, everything becomes more complicated and faster paced, it takes much more effort. Then you have 1s, where the pressure is immense because...well...it's a duel, you have no one to watch your back.

    • @mike_nelson
      @mike_nelson Год назад +3

      @@Outfled at the lower ranks it is but at GC it's much more dynamic and can shift very quickly as the ball changes direction and possession much faster. If 3rd into 2nd is happening but a high challenge pushes the ball into an unexpected place, 1st may have to become 2nd, 2nd into 3rd and 3rd becoming 1st very quickly. Then positioning becomes important as spacing and body facing is key.
      I see a lot at champ bad front post rotations into main boost, or wide back boost rotations, double commits into corners and huge gaps in midfield. 3rd sitting deep or 1st not transitioning into 3rd or 2nd but opting for boost over play. That's just the mistakes without considering the ball and opposition positions. 2's is much more simpler in terms of two roles and less variances I guess.

    Am I wrong or does the player base improving have nothing to do with rank drift? Rank isn't a reflection of your RL skill, it's how you compare to other players. If every single player suddenly got 30% better, no one's rank would change at all.

      I mean technically you are right. Relatively speaking, if everyone’s rank got 30% better, there wouldn’t be any more or less players that are better or worse than you. But since the ranks are based off mmr, your mmr going up by 30% makes a hell of a difference on what your rank looks like even if you are technically the same skill level as before

    • @NorthstarUK
      @NorthstarUK  Год назад +85

      That part of the video is a blunder on my part. You are right essentially that playing ranked is a zero-sum game, meaning that the amount of MMR before or after a match is the same. In an airtight model where the playercount is static you would be absolutely right.
      What I could've included is the idea of players leaving and entering the ecosystem, which because RL is coming off the free-to-play boon the game suffers a continual loss of players, meaning that *technically* the average player becomes better, since the often more numerous lower-ranked players leave and take their MMR with them, while the people committed to reaching higher ranks are more likely to stay. Which is why Psyonix has to adjust the MMR every season; it's to account for players leaving and joining ranked.

    My biggest issue was that they based it around 1v1s. This was always going to be the option that caused the most backlash. Base it around 3s and 2s players will be a touch upset and the 1s players will find a new sense of joy in life.

    • @VoidLantadd
      @VoidLantadd Год назад +10

      While you're right that this option would make more people happy, if they bumped up 1v1 ranks to match 2v2 and 3v3, it wouldn't fix the rank inflation problem; it'd just make it worse. Now they'd have artificially inflated 1v1 as much as the other modes. They'd need to create new ranks above SSL. This would make for good content from pros and high-level players and give them more to grind for. On the other hand, endlessly making more ranks in the face of rank inflation might go as well as printing more money in the face of economic inflation: not very.

      @@VoidLantaddI don't agree. GC 1 is already top 1 percent in 2s. And no one I know is a ssl. Ssl is basically pro players and people that are trying to go pro. I don't see a problem with that. After ssl you can look at your mmr and see where you stand in the world rankings like the top 100.

      1v1 is the only mode that counts for anything because you're alone, not teammate to blame or carry, just you and your own competence. I just got out of being hardstuck in plat 3 in 1v1 and when I do placement matches all the way back in gold 3 you can easily get diamond 2. I'll say it again, 1v1 is the only mode that counts for anything.

    • @kwame20101
      @kwame20101 Год назад +10

      @@icebox1954 and I'll state the obvious, rocket league is a team based game. In the same way basketball and soccer are but can offer some fun in 1v1s. Having teammates opens up this incredible ability for specialization which tends to thrive in almost any situation when applied. For instance, a specialized playmaker, striker, and defender will often perform much better than a team of dedicated 1s players. This is obviously a showing of the advantage of a min-max skill distribution versus a even skill spread. 3s simply offers an advantage to min-max players, while 1s requires that you go for an even spread.

    • @icebox1954
      @icebox1954 Год назад +7

      @@kwame20101 That doesn't change what I've written. 3v3 and 2v2 are casual modes for people who don't want to feel responsible for their own mistakes whereas 1v1 have to face the cold hard truth every single game.
      1v1 is and has always been the mode where skill defines victory unlike getting carried or hindered in 3v3 and 2v2.
      1v1 requires excellence in everything, the other modes require mediocrity in most but one aspect.
      Also, the pros actually disagree with you as you can't just be a defensive player, an aggressive player etc, you need to be everything and fill the need your team requires.
      3v3 and 2v2 teaches complacency and mediocrity, 1v1 teaches excellence and to constantly improve in any and all aspects because it only takes one mistake to get scored on.
      The pros tell you to do 1v1 to improve the most as a player and then when you go semi-pro you do nothing but 3v3 as you are assumed to have all the skills needed to go pro except amazing coordination with one team.
      Without 1v1 you'll never be your best, whereas 3v3 only teaches you 3v3 and not personal skill.

    As a GC2 last season, it was frustrating to be struggling in low c3 in 2v2. That said, I think it would be cool for c3, for example, to represent a similar skill level across modes. I don't think it's possible, though, with the difference in popularity in modes. That will always be an issue somewhere in the ranked ladder.

      I’m in the same boat. I’m a long time player and I hit gc2 div 4 way back in season 3, then stopped playing. Coming back to see the champion ranks a complete mess of what used to be gc1 players is quite uncomfortable, but it will motivate me to actually grind my skill back up to my two peaks (1650mmr pre ssl, gc2 div 4). For months I had simply played to get my rewards and then turned the game off for the rest of the season, and now that it’s difficult again it’s a good motivator. I’ve already climbed 300mmr out of low champ 1 to low champ 3 at this point, the longer I wait into the season the easier matches are getting as players escape the elo hell that is champion right now.

    🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation:
    00:00 🎮 *Rocket League's Unique Rank System*
    - Rocket League has distinct rank ladders for each game mode.
    - Nine different modes, including competitive, extra modes, tournaments, and casual MMR, contribute to varied rank distributions.
    - The main issue lies in the inconsistency of rank distributions across different game modes, causing challenges for players aiming for the same rank.
    01:28 📊 *Impact of Rank Drift on Players*
    - Rank drift results in different skill requirements to reach the same rank in various modes.
    - Season 9's example highlights the significant variation in the proportion of players at Champion 1 in standard, doubles, and solo modes.
    - Achieving the same rank holds different values, affecting the perceived skill level of players at that rank.
    03:25 ⚙️ *Pysonix's Attempted Solutions and Backlash*
    - Pysonix attempted to address the rank drift issue through a significant shift in MMR values across modes.
    - Community backlash ensued due to unexpected rank adjustments, leading to a partial rollback.
    - The traditional approach of soft resets failed, prompting Pysonix to explore alternative solutions.
    04:23 🔄 *Causes of Rank Drift in Main Modes*
    - 1v1 mode experiences rank drift due to lower popularity, increased stress, and limited opportunities for improvement.
    - 2v2 mode, being the most popular, faces challenges such as smurfing and a more relaxed environment.
    - Understanding the causes helps contextualize the disparities in rank distributions.
    05:51 📈 *Proposed Solutions and Community Engagement*
    - Pysonix aims to implement cross-season changes to prevent modes from drifting apart.
    - Suggested improvements include subtle day-to-day MMR adjustments and aligning modes meaningfully.
    - Encourages community input to address this complex statistical issue and maintain a balanced rank system.

      Agree. As someone who's been champ 1- champ 2 for awhile, the skill disparity between games is absurd. One game getting straight smurfed on. Next game opponents can barely touch the ball properly and/or play with players like skills. Makes climbing exceptionally difficult cause every game you never know what you're going to be playing against. I'd really like to see some solution to the smurfing. At least something to make it more difficult. Also I saw this same video saying 1 in 6 games. But sometimes I feel like there's even more.

      Its not only smurfs. Because of solo que and teams are in the same rank , you have a big difference each game. I kept track of my games at Champ 1 to 2 and when I won it was a blow out , 5 goals difference on average , but you also have games where the teammate is tilted , carried to the rank and it is just impossible to win. Now my winrate is about 60 percent till Champ 2 and then it drops of a bit and I also team up with a D1 rank which usually means dropping a few games.
      Imo you should have the teams only vs and the solo que only version for 2v2 and 3v3 modes. Maybe even for the extra modes.

      @@guitarJK1988 I only play with friends and never with randoms, we mostly only see other teams queued together but there are some games where two randoms beat us pretty bad. Neither of us smurf and we are consistently at the C1/C2 line. Separating these into two new playlists I think would end up killing the game.
      It always feels like the teams that aren't paired up together are individually solid, and it is notably more difficult to beat them at 50s and other neutral game decision making. Our victories against most of those tend to come from just solid decision-making and breakaways.
      Meanwhile, its the games where people are queued together that we see huge disparity of skill-levels. One person capable of essentially scoring on us both and just depending on the one person behind them to get enough of a touch or block to slow down the play long enough for them to recover.
      The smurfing, boosting, and otherwise just overall high level players carrying their friends is the root of the issue. There is a huge difference between a C1 and a C3, and an even larger difference between a GC1 and a GC3. It really needs to be addressed.

      The matchmaking system itself certainly needs to have another once-over to make sure it is accurately balancing teams. I won't deny that. But I'd also be lying to you if I said that we only ever saw other duos together where one was carrying the other. Often we just pick out someone who seems to struggle against our playstyle and try to put them in situations where they are uncomfortable and it works out for us. In the games where one player is significantly better than the other, often the "bad" player is still high Diamond or Low Champ levels of skill, so we're basically going against someone a notch below us and 6 notches above us. i.e. Boosters/Smurfs. thanks for covering this topic. It seems no one is pointing to the obvious culprit for rank drift. The main reason why we have so many GCs in 2v2 is not because of the above...It is simply because of F2P and alt accounts. High rank players are more likely to have a second or third account. So the most played competitive mode will see the most duplication of accounts. Those alt accounts can be smurf accounts like you mention, but many players also have a second account just for chill or friends at the same rank they are on their main account. Please make the community aware of this issue. If we get rid of alt accounts via identity verification (phone or email), we will solve rank drift and smurfing.

    The big issue, is they shafted the 2's playlist to satisfy the 1's playlist. The result is that ex 1600's are now hashing it out in C3/GC1, solo queueing with a good proportion of players who were not 1600..... and the lack of consistency in this compacted area of the playlist means that the natural drift back up has become utterly constipated (win, loss, win, loss, win, loss). The knock on effect of this, is that SSL players have been extremely thinned out and are struggling to get more than 5 games a session due to long queue times. While I don't have the data to prove, I have seen anecdotal evidence that high level players are turning to alternate accounts and smurfing their way up the ladder again just to be able play the game period. And due to the inconsistency in the squashed centre, more and more average players are seemingly teaming with higher level players to get themselves back to their usual GC position.
    Plain and simply, the S11 changes were too big and too sudden, even with the walk back.

    In 2's if you get a tm8 with bad game sense (ball chasers) you can easily play behind them so when they inevitably miss the ball your there to save them. In 3's though, if you get 2 ball chasers, you're at the very least in a 2v3 situation as both your tm8's fight over the ball. You can play back as you watch them flop around in the corners making miss after miss or as they come flying in from an angle that even if they could hit the ball it would result in an easy goal attempt for the other team.
    I will always prefer a lower rank tm8 with good game sense over a higher one with good mechanics and no sense. They still miss the ball occasionally but at least they put themselves in a position to actually make a decent play.

Smurfing is still such a problem, however. 1s and 2s get it the worst. People getting inflated by someone on a smurf account in 2s and low GCs/high Champs (who couldn't get higher in ranked), decide to attempt to "beat up on" lower players. Just to get from D1 to D2, I had to play roughly 70% of my games against smurfs in 1s, so I have to work so much harder for a lesser prize, as it were. Yes, but it's still easier if there is 12.5% of the player base gc. If you grind 3v3 you will probably become like top 8% in 3v3 while you're top 12% in 2v2, but you don't get the gc title. The more players in the playlist, the more easier it gets to hit a rank, and that discourages a lot of people to start playing 1v1 or 3v3

    I personally think the biggest issue with 2s and somewhat 3s are the number of people smurfing. It really damages the ranks. It doesn't affect 1s though because people tend to smurf because they're playing with a lower ranked friend. FTP was a great idea to get the player base back up again but it's really screwed the ranking system imo. You just have to look around c3 season 10. Which means I shouldnt count towards the percentage, but I'm guessing that the numbers listed, counts me among them anyways. 1% of players are champ in 1v1 because of all the champ players, only like 20% of them are playing 1v1. What they need to do is re-calculate those percentages based off the player count for that mode. It won't be 1% of players anymore. It'll be x% of 1v1 players.

      It is about the popularity, but mostly the number of game done more than everything else.
      Since rank are achieve by reaching an MMR that means to reach X rank you need a minimum number of game.
      So if next season there would be a hard reset and we agree the average MMR win per game would be 10.
      1s C1 is 995 MMR so it will be 100 games
      2s C1 is 1061 MMR so it will be 107 games
      3s C1 is 1075 MMR so it will be 108 games
      Meaning someone would have to play about 100 game in 1 season to got a chance to reach the C1 in any games mode. Knowing that almost all player do there placememt in all game mode but majority also stop playing 1s after their placement that how you create the unbalance between each game mode.
      There is less player that only do there 3s place or about but still enough to create a difference between 3s and 2s.

A lot of times when my teammates end up challenging me to 1v1 because “l sucked” or “l was ball chasing “ it comes to light that l don’t suck very quickly as l am also gc in 1s. It’s extremely frustrating when you try your hardest to support your teammates and have them completely ignore proper positioning for a pass. In addition to that the constant passive aggressiveness.

    Honestly as a veteran player from 2015, the rank system has always been a joke. Remember the whole season 3 controversy? Even back there were so many GCs that got boosted due to inflation that my rising star ass could beat them from time to time. I'm talking 100% boosted accounts. That rank and season has always been a joke to me esp compared to the season 2 title, but those are all 99% bought by now or so old that the person is hella rust. I have 4 yellow, 10, 11, 13, and 14 with 10 being rumble. I only display the rumble one cuz it's funny watching people mald over what rank I display, but I just got a S10 red one last season. I play with a low champ friend but on my own my rank rapidly climbs out of champ and into the low GCs.
    I think I could sit comfortably mid GC2 if I keep up training, but I've stopped caring about my rank. I have 5 titles now, I don't ever wear newer ones, I've proved that I can play at Grand Champion levels both past and present, and that my seasons were technically harder than these seasons. Some seasons will be easier than others as everyone improves and Psynoix shakes the snowglobe, but if you've reached a specific rank in the past and cant get it again, don't worry. Like me, you've proven you can play to that level, it may not be reflective of modern levels but it is worth _something_ like.
    Anyway, I'm still climbing out of champ after the 2s adjustment, low C3 rn and it's horrible. There is no consistency anymore. Just gotta keep grinding games

However, once I reached gold rank (in 3v3) we lost every game until I was back at silver. Then I queued up by myself in 3s, only to play with the absolute worst trash I’ve ever seen. It took me a month to get back to gold, but again I’ve been cursed with horrible teammates and keep losing almost every game. This system is hot garbage. Just for testing purposes I played solo duels and ranked diamond 1, so you tell me. Am I really playing at a silver/gold level, or am I playing at a diamond level? It’s just the luck of the draw, no individual MMR, only based off whether you win or lose.

    • @Eric-zz5ij
      @Eric-zz5ij 11 месяцев назад

      6 months late, but if you don't know how to rotate or read your teammates then you wont make it in the other gamemodes. You playing with better teammates id assume has done at least one of two things for you. One is that you are spoiled, so you learned to play with people who cut out the slack you left behind. Essentially you don't notice certain mistakes you make, since you never had to worry about them when playing with better players. Two, you know only how to rotate a certain way or you try to rotate with teammates who don't know how to. They can't read your mind, so they might have a different plan than you have. You also have to take into account their skill level, in other words, don't expect a gold player to be able to cleanly hit a high aerial pass from you. If you have a GC as a teammate then you can basically throw whatever pass you have in mind, and if you succeed even decently they will probably be able to make a play out of it. The same can't be said for a gold player, if your pass isn't ON POINT then you are relying on a gold players skill to hit the ball into a favorable spot.
      If you are diamond in 1s then you should be able to 2v1 gold players. Sometimes when I totally ignore my teammate (in lower ranks) and think of the game as a 2v1, I do a lot better. Obviously I don't steal the ball from my teammate if he is going for a play, I wait and see what he does with it, and if he fails miserably, then I will take the ball again and try to go for solo plays again. If he makes a good play on the other hand, well good for us, since I will be able to play off his play and the chance of scoring will be even higher.

    I like percentage based ranks, top .1% ssl, 1% gc, 5% champ, 15% diamond, 30% plat etc. It might be more difficult to climb ranks as mmr inflates, but season resets should keep happening

    • @JacobSkatezz

      Percentage based ranks are bad it only benefits better players leaving lower ranked players with very wide varietys of skill sets in the same pool that's why at Lower ranks the matches are less fair and balanced because majority of players are in mid to lower ranks meaning a bunch of people with different skill levels playing against each other causing unbalanced matches

    Because of the reset and the servers this season. I was c3 ready to touch gc for the first time and now I’m fighting for my life against gc’s in champ1. And honestly I have teammates ranked at Diamond that I’m pretty sure are gc as well

    one of the real problems with rocket league is how skilled different ranks are. on the lower end. bronze can fight a silver fairly well due to the skill gap being smallish. however at the other end of the scale a champ fighting a grand champ is almost always a huge blow out. what im saying is there is a smaller skill gap between bronze silver gold than there is between diamond champ grand champ. and one of the goals of a ranking system is to represent the different skill levels. pretty difficult in a game where the skill ceiling is borderline non existent.

In fact I remember the latest one I won I even had an AFK. After that I just kept losing games (10 in a row) and went down like from Platinum to Gold 2.

    I just encounter sweats in almost every single match. They always seem to reach the ball faster than me and when a 50/50 does happen, they always win it regardless of the position of my car and the ball. When they mess up and I capitalize on it, they somehow manage to catch up to me despite going top speed. Another minor thing is the teammates I queue with. Sometimes I get normal players with decent game sense bit more often than not, I get ones that play like absolute bots.
    Don't get me started on the ball physics. This game just took a weird turn after it became free to play.

    I dont really see why 'rank drift' is a problem though. When asking for someones rank or comparing, you usually specifiy what mode its in, as like you said theyre all different. They all require a different approach so I wouldnt expect them to all be the same anyway

    I assume that the ranking discrepancies between gametypes is entirely based off player count. Like, I don't play 1v1 hardly at all, so I'm not included in the 1v1 percentage.
    Regarding the current ranking, it's a mess. Diamond is a mix of diamond, plat and champ now. It's ridiculous. It's near impossible to move up or down anymore. I got Champ 1 rewards last season. Now it's pretty much hard stuck in D2.

    All I’ve noticed this past week is people in the ranks that really should not be where they are as a result of these changes, and I mean as in they are not good enough to be at that rank, I’ve had chronic whiffers, chasers, and even played around them and picked up 100% of the slack I could, and then once my team loses, it’s my fault because I gain a title every season solo in 3s because it’s my favorite. I’d say RL has one of the most toxic communities in gaming, and that’s just because lack of accountability in the community, and gaming in general, so if you’re out there, and you’re passing to the enemy team, bumping your teammates because you rotated back on the wrong side, and stealing hits and double or triple committing regularly…..do everyone a favor and play casual 🎉

  • @iMagicIAm
    @iMagicIAm Год назад +5

    I dont think its a particularly difficult issue to resolve. There should be an "Overall rank" which is just the sum of your 3 competitive MMR's divided by 3. This is used to place you into matches but you still have a separate rank for each different game mode. The only issue i can see with this system is people who refuse to play all 3 modes, but even then, you can just change it to be the sum of all of the MMRs you currently are ranked for. For example, if you only play solos and duos, your overall MMR is your solo rank vs your duos rank divided by 2. This also fixes the issue were you are a diamond in ones but end up facing against a grand champ in duos.
