    I must have defective hamsters because all 3 of them are the laziest little things. I had them in a 75 gallon tank that was about 4 and a half feet long and all they did was sleep in one corner and play in a little 12 by 12 inch area.

    My parents are the people who say that my robo hamster is ok in a small pet store cage and only has a food bowl, water bottle, a small sand bath, a strawberry hut, a 4 and a half inch wheel (it is ok with this at the moment since she is a baby) and one tiny tube and they think that they are ok with this because she is so small that this is big enough but i don't know what to do because even if I say I'll pay for it myself they still won't let me because it's a "waste is space and time for an animal that's going to die in a few years anyway..." they are the same with the rabbits in the garden who have no toys or anything but that's a different story for and other time... I'm not sure what to do because I want her to have a good life and have fun and be able to harness the energy she has and run and play all the time but I'm only 13 so if my parents say no I can't do anything about it anyway...

    Great, informative video. I went to Pets at Home (I live in the UK) recently, to adopt/purchase a Syrian to go into a 40 gallon aquarium. My previous Syrian had lived in it and was very happy. When I told them it was a 40 gallon aquarium, they refused point blank to let me buy (there weren't any Syrians up for adoption) the hammie I had fallen for. They told me it was a new policy from the RSPCA. They said there would not be adequate ventilation and that it would be difficult to clean. I actually felt very upset and a teeny bit insulted, as my previous Syrian had been very happy and I had NEVER had ANY issues. I left feeling very upset and like a bad pet owner. I am a very experienced pet owner; moreso, I admit, with cats, dogs and chickens, but I had hammies before and am well aware of what they need to have a happy, healthy life.

    Personally, from my experience I was actually forced to move my black bear syrian hamster back to a ten gallon tank, when I first got her she had a ten gallon for two days so I could collect all the supplies for her bigger tank, once I moved her to the bigger tank she went wild she went from sleeping on me and cuddling to biting and being super anxious, I bought her more places to hide and it didn't help so I tried the ten gallon tank again and she went right back to being her lovely self. I'm not sure what is was but all I know is she prefers it and is happy with a small tank so I leave it that way. (side note, I have another Syrian in a 29 gallon and she loves it.)

    Thank you so much for making this video! I really hope people take note. I get so frustrated seeing so many hamsters living in tiny cages, especially on RUclips where a younger audience is influenced. It makes me really cross when RUclipsrs declare their cage is 'just below the minimum'. The recommended minimum exists for a reason. It is cruel to allow a hamster to live in a small cage. It is like forcing a human to live in a cupboard for their entire life. If you cannot afford a large enough cage or do not have the space, then do not get a hamster. Almost all of my rescue hams have come from living in ridiculous sized cages with tiny wheels. It is so upsetting.
    It was lovely seeing some of your precious past hammies. Lots of hugs to you and Carob.

    • @HoppingHammy
      @HoppingHammy  8 лет назад +4

      Yes, it is frustrating. I do try to take everyone's personal situations into account and offer advice based on that, but at the same time I can't lie and say that it's okay to use a small cage or dangerous wheel, for example. Anyway, I don't want to go off on a rant but I really do hope this video will encourage new hamster owners to start off with a bigger cage / tank rather than needing to upgrade down the road. :) I really appreciate your input and compliments! For some reason RUclips marked your comment as spam, so I just now saw it and approved it as "not spam." Lol! Take care and hugs back!

    Thank you for the in-depth video! I haven't had a hamster in probably 10 years, and so I had a 20 gallon in mind as an acceptable size (my hamster as a kid was in a 15 gallon - he got a lot of time outside of it to run around but I still feel bad - I didn't know any better at that time), but after watching your video I went with a 40 gallon breeder for my new Syrian (Petco was a good tip - I got mine half off for $49). I'm relieved knowing my hamster will be comfortable with the space she has.

    I purchased a 20 gallon long tank when I originally adopted my Syrian hamster Samuel, I do think that the size is too small for him because he hasn't really seemed very happy in the past few months. I do have a spare 10 gallon tank and was wondering if maybe attaching the two tanks with ovo tubes would be a good idea. If anyone has any other suggestions that'd be great.

    I'm in the UK and have never really seen these tanks in person (my local pet shop doesn't have tanks for sale in their shop), so this was definitely helpful to see the difference between the sizes. Even though I can check the exact sizes online, it's not really the same as seeing it all setup for a hamster.
    My dwarf is in a setup, which is a bit bigger than the 40g breeder, and I'm definitely glad I went for that instead of a smaller one, which would have been around the same size as the 20g tank.

    This is a highly theoretical question, and if you can't provide the space for a hamster you shouldn't get one, but wouldn't a twenty gallon be less stressful for a hamster than a crittertrail?

    I have a robo in a 20 gallon long. He has never shown signs of stress at all. He has a 6.5 inch wheel so it fits fine, and he has a lot more bedding on the other side of the cage than the wheel. He has everything he needs and several different toys and tunnels and things with plenty of space left.

  • @kyamai4501
    @kyamai4501 8 лет назад +5

    i want to talk about the 20 gallon. when i first got my hamster, i bought him a 29 gallon tank. which technically is still a 20, just taller. my hamster when i first got him was a very scared little guy. he was 6 months old with barley any human interaction. i feel as if the 29 gallon was a good start. because of his stress, i feel it gave him enough room to roam and to feel safe. plus because it was a taller cage i was able to put alot of bedding in which i found his love for burrowing. (if u look at his cage now he has so many different tunnles!) haha. but after taming him, i did upgrade. the reason i upgraded is because i bought a Carolina Storm Express wheel. and that is true. that putting a bigger wheel in that 29 gallon gave him no room. he now lives in his 55 gallon tank where he has a flying saucer and the C.S.E. wheel and he is in heaven. its crazy to think this super scared little guy that would tremble in my hands when i hold him, now comes to the sound of my voice and lets me hold him and pet him and give him kisses. he likes the attention, but after about a mintue hes like "okay mommy. time to go back now" lol ❤❤❤ basicly long story short. ny hamster was completely happy with 360 sq. and i think it actually helped him become tamed. (just in my opinion. not an expert) lol

I have my 2 hamsters (robo named Patches) and (fancy russian dwarf, black and white mottled color named Pepper). Used to have 5 hammys. I enjoy putting in lots of bedding in each of their tanks, they both love to borrow. I also provide them with variety toys,etc. If one day I can go larger with a diy I will. I know a hamster needs a good amount of space for a cage. But I think sometimes it gets out of hand while the size of a cage keeps getting bigger and bigger for the minimum.

    • @animalsfurever7899
      @animalsfurever7899 5 лет назад +2

      LauraXD_Queen I think that 450 is a good minimum, but 1000 is too much for minimum. But if you can have a 1000 square inch cage, that is awesome considering in the wild hamsters have miles and miles of land to run and play in.

I don't have the money to get a new tank and my parents don't pay for pet supplies so it's not an option for me. Not everyone has the ability to buy a brand new setup for their hammy, I love her to death but it really just is not an option.

      Sorry that I'm late and sorry I'm not Hannah! But that sounds like a really big cage lol. I think your little hammy will be in paradise because most cages in pet stores (if you bought one or adopted one) are tiny! (This applies to most shelters too). I hope your hamster - that I'm assuming you have after one month - is very happy right now.

    hi! i'm getting a hamster soon, and i was wondering: would it be alright to use a 10 gallon tank as a temporary cage? i'm getting an ikea detolf as his permanent cage, but since i don't have an ikea nearby, i need to order it online. i was thinking that, if i got a 10 gallon to use as a temporary, it'd be okay for the adjustment period, as the place i'm getting my hamster from does keep their hamsters in 10 gallon tanks!

    Very helpful video! I am getting a plastic bin that is the equivalent to the 55 gallon, it’s 624 square inches but is 39” x 16” instead of 48” x 13”, I will eventually be getting a dwarf hamster for this bin cage and am incredibly excited 😊 your videos have already been a massive help to me in preparing for a hammy

    Hey Hannah! I just had a crazy idea for a DIY cage. Now, I would appreciate some feedback from anyone out there. I was thinking of turning a 5 level bookcase into a cage for my future hamsters. I would connect the levels with tubes on the inside of the cage. Would this be a good idea? Also, the hamsters are so cute in this video. Have a great day!

    Petco, Petsmart, and Pet Supplies Plus all run $1 per gallon sales here in the US every few months, for tanks in the following sizes: 10, 20L, 20H, 29, 40B, and 55. Pet Supplies Plus also runs 50% off sales on Critter Cage sliding top glass terrariums in the following sizes: 5.5, 10, 15, 20L, 20H, 29, and 40B gallons. These are the same as aquariums but as they are not meant to hold water, they are much lighter because the glass is thinner, and they have locking sturdy metal mesh lids. The prices vary but for the 40B with the lid it would be $50, which is cheaper than the aquarium when you factor in the cost of a safe metal mesh lid (which for that size is $15-30). A 40B or 55g tank are the sizes most suitable for hamsters, but keep in mind that although a 55g is technically bigger, it has less floor space because most of that extra space comes from its height. Your hamster only has 4sqft of floor space in a 55g, and the 12" width can be constricting for fitting toys. A 40B has 4.5 sqft of floor space, and because it is 18" wide it is a lot easier to fit in toys such as larger hides and wheels.

    great video,
    my syrians cage is roughly 4900 square inches but she's already showing signs that its too small for her, she's only been living in it a few months, I moved her out of her old 2835 inch cage because she was showing signs of stress, I hoped the new cage would be big enough but clearly it isn't, she gets loads of play time out of the cage, and pretty much anything a hamster could dream of, I don't know what to do, any tips?

    • @HoppingHammy
      @HoppingHammy  8 лет назад +5

      Wow, that is crazy! I have never heard of a cage that large, so I'm surprised she is still stressed out. What I've found is that some hamsters (female Syrians especially) never seem content with any amount of space and always prefer more. Unfortunately this isn't typically possible to offer in captivity, especially not with as large of cage as you are talking about! (It sounds amazing!) Do you have a lot of bedding for her to dig in? How about various textures and substrates like rocks, sand, dirt, cork, etc.? Otherwise, I would say don't stress over it too much because you're already offering her such a huge cage! I wish I could give Carob one that size! :)

      You might want to consider a lid if you have cats who may be curious about your tank and its occupant, or for peace of mind. I know my dwarf cannot hope to get near the top of my 40 gallon breeder but it just makes me feel better having the mesh lid on top haha

    Hi hammy I am interested in getting a dwarf hamster and have looked on Amazon for cages and have found wire cages specifically for that type of hamster but it is not as big as you are recommending I have a lot of pets we have 7 dogs one indoor cat the Hedgehog and a rabbit and I do pay lot attention two ever one of them and with the cage not being as big as your recommending I just wanted to ask you if it would be okay to get that type of cage because they would get so much attention. So I was wondering if it be okay to get that of a cage I think it's 5 foot by 3 foot or maybe a little bit smaller. I appreciate the help sorry I'm asking you this big question but I've never owned a hamster before I've had a lot of pets forever always taken very good care of them and hedgehog is 6 years old and his species of Hedgehog usually on their lives till about 4 years old with all the exercise and the food I feed him very healthy and with all the Care he gets I think that's the only reason he's lived two years past his usual passing time

    It makes sense that the min size has changed to 450 sq. My Syrian hamster has been antsy in a 360 sq cage for the first two years of her life. She's has slowed down considerably and sleeps much longer now :3 In the past I had to make sure her toys were changed frequently and that I took her out for LOTS of playtime.
