+greathey1234 he's a whiny spoiled berk (using the rhyming slang instead of what I meant) .... he'll be complaining his diamond slippers are a bit tight next
one thing i don't like about this R.....the driver. if you want 18" wheels....buy yourself a set of 18" if you want led tail lights, retrofit a set of led tails. those seats are R sport seats....designed to keep you firm and fixed...if you want comfort...buy the trend-line :) retrofit those trims in carbon fiber or something else so it wont be that dusty. RETROFIT!!! geeeeeez PS: im from europe :P
+DVVFane The 18" wheels and R sport seats are definitely things that should be left up to the buyer to change, but not having led tail lights on the North America version is kind of bullshit. Sure you can retrofit LED tail lights yourself... for $1000.
Hey zed4me! Just wanna thank you for all the Golf R videos!!! I watched all your videos (and all other videos on RUclips) about the R before I bought mine 7 weeks ago. I was very fortunate to have found an unclaimed Golf R right before the trade assistance I got from VW was about to expire! My R is limestone gray with DCC and I couldn't love it more!!! :) Thank you again and keep them coming...
You HAVE to get an APR stage 1 tune. I did on my 2015 R a couple of days ago and holy frick is it amazing. A HUGE difference!!! Im up to 650 miles on my MKVII R now. =) Great video again.
Kevin Ryan Don't tempt me even more than I already am! haha I just got the Neuspeed module so I'll enjoy it for now, and wait for the issues to get worked out and have other people rack up some miles on the stage 1 tune before doing it. Maybe in a year or two when the warranty isn't so important to me. Enjoy your 12 second car!! The tune is just beast!
zed4me Awesome! About the warranty, my dealer said an APR tune wouldn't void the warranty and they even have a new GTI with a APR stage 1 on their lot. I wonder if it varies from dealer to dealer especially since there are VW dealers that are also APR branches as well. Hummmm...
Kevin Ryan Some dealers are mod friendly. So one dealer may not void your warranty at all whereas another one will say because you got a tune the entire warranty is gone lol kinda ridiculous but that's the way it is.
zed4me Legally they cannot void your car warranty for any modification. BUT there is a caveat. If you are modified and you break something that can be linked in any direct way to a modification you have done legally they can and will deny your claim. For example, if you get a tube and crack a turbo or downpipe or intercooler they will most likely deny your claim. If you were to say spring an oil leak or your water pump failed they would most likely cover something like that. Also if you power mirror stopped working or something they would have to cover that unless somehow you modified your mirrors ;) Basically you have to decide if major engine components are something you would want to pay for out of pocket if something goes wrong.
***** I agree with that. Good points. I will also add that I accept a certain level of responsibility with modding personally. If I get a tune I think about the major components that are connected to the systems affected and decide if I am willing to pay those expenses out of pocket should they arise. The old saying "you gotta pay to play" is perfect :) But you are right if you get a tune and blow a turbo they will blame the tune even if there was a defect in the turbo from the factory... BUT how would you know that and how would they know that? They would just assume and leave to you to prove their was a defect. Turbos aren't that much to replace really I mean we are talking about mid to high 30,000 car. The turbo would be one of the most expensive things to replace aside from blowing the engine but that would be pretty hard to do. Keep up on your maintenance and visual inspections and oil changes and most likely all will be just fine.
If you use static free cleaning wipes to clean the inside of your car, it will help with the dust that sticks to the plastic. You can find them in the TV section of electronics stores.
+Kelvin Waters The euro led tails look so much better in colour and design too. I put led bulbs into mine, a lot brighter, but still design is not as nice as the euro ones.
hey man i have noticed the black plastic get so dusty because of static try rubbing it down with a dryer sheet after you detail you car it has really helped me out
Picked up my R a couple weeks ago. Your videos were a huge help in deciding to buy one without seeing it or test driving it. I'm also going to make use of your videos for opening up the center console and disconnecting the Soundaktor. Just wanted to thank you for spending the time to put these videos together. By the way: I didn't know this until my car arrived, but for some reason, all the Rs coming into Canada started coming with Pretoria wheels instead of the Cadiz wheels, and my dealer didn't even tell me this when I ordered it. To say that I was THRILLED when I found this out would be an understatement. No additional charge!!! Thanks again. Great job.
Just ordered a Golf R manual - March 1st will be a long wait! Specced the Pretoria wheels, dynamic chassis control, (have it on my SEAT Leon and it's brilliant!) upgraded Satnav/sound, winter pack and rear tints........and got a chunk of money off......!
I'm glad at the end you qualified this by saying it was "nit picky" and you had to put in effort to come up with them. The whole time I was thinking these are petty lol!
Hey mate, great car you have there. Just some advice on the tailights and the folding mirrors. The LED taillights can be easily ordered from Europe (really, if it seems impossible I can ship you some :)) ) and I believe that if the mirrors fold electrically from inside, you can just go and modify the software so that they fold every time you lock the car, I believe you can do that at a WV dealership as well. My father owned a Passat and we did just that at the VW service, along with other minor modifications from the software to make the car more pleasant. Anyhow, you have a really nice car there. All the best!
hows the understeer when your rally pushing it? after all it is a front wheel drive based system for the 4 motion .. I was just wonder because i was thinking of getting one
Try one of the California dusters for the dust issue, I got the large one and the smaller one, I keep the smaller one for the inside jobs and it picks up well, just brush it across the dash every once in awhile.
I love living in the UK more than ever. The Cadiz wheels are 18in and we get the LED tail lights. Plus it's got more power as we use proper petrol presumably.
The reason Us doesnt have the LED tail lights is that federal regulation stated that the turning signal has to be 1 cm in height. And the LED ones werent up to standards, its allowed in Europe but not in US
Just for comparison, I have the standard alcantara seats and on long trips they are a bit firm like you said but don't get as hot as leather does in the summer months. In regards to the piano black veneer I just keep a small microfibre cloth in the door pocket, quick 10 sec wipe and its as good as new. The R in the UK comes standard with 18" Cadiz and the opening armrest cubby, seems like the US market misses out which is a shame.
I also have a MK7 Golf R and, luckily, I've not had any problems with the seats on long drives. The only thing I dislike seat related is I feel the driving position is just a bit too high.
Really enjoyed your video mate - great job. Like one of the commenters mentioned below, if these are the 5 worst things about your R-Type, you must be a really happy owner! Cheers!
I just got a Golf R and absolutely LOVE it. Joy rides become addictive - you end up with a grin on your face long after the ride is over. This is by far the funnest car that I've owned. And everything is still stock. I will be adding the stage 1 APR. Considering the performance boost, the APR is a bargain! And more importantly, the APR doesn't affect any warranties. Regarding the suspension: The roads where I live are mostly in very good shape - even with the suspension set to race, it's not too firm. If driving on poor pavement, the suspension will seem a little too firm even on the comfort setting. So far, I've got only 2 complaints: 1) No sunroof is available on the 2015 R. Supposedly it's available on the Euro spec version. 2) No storage in the center console. Thankfully zed4me has a fix for that. One other thing that would be nice to have is feature that lets you open the windows from a distance. This is a nice feature to have when your car has been sitting in the sun for long periods.
Zed, do you have any idea when the 16' manual transmission will come out for these? Also, do release dates mean that is when you can preorder them or does that mean that is when they are available at dealerships? If so, how early can you usually preorder before the official release date? Thanks!
djaraable Sorry, I don't know so I won't mislead you, but my guess is that they won't do a pre-order on the manuals like they did with these DSGs. I'd join a forum.. these people know more than dealerships do haha
I test drove a Golf R a few weeks ago. I agree with you about the 19" wheels. The stiff ride on terrible Michigan roads was a major concern. You must not have the DCC option. Test car didn't have it either and I was wondering if you've heard how effect it is in smoothing out the bumps especially during highway driving.
Great video, Does the car have any annoying rattles so far? I've been considering the R (or R Variant if it become official for US market) The one thing that really bugs me about my TDi CUP (mkv) is the rattles.
drwong84 No rattles to speak of.. Though there is a slight ringing when the AC is on and you're in stop and go traffic. It only happens sometimes as well.
***** Thanks for the heads up, i have first hand experience with missing wire clips on my VW. One was for harness for sunroof (easy fix) located just behind overhead control. Another was for the harness connected to actual sunroof (major PITA!), had to drop the entire headliner just to pop in a simple clip. I hope its just poor QC from Mexico. I'm hopeful that the German assembled cars are better.
Hmmm still don't know cause I'm thinking either the golf r or BMW 335is 2011 yes which ever one I get I'm tuning them to Max out 600+ hp I just don't know which of the two to get but also the slight chance of the corvette c7 2015 please help.
nino callava Those are very different cars.. What are your needs? The 335 is a great car, it may be my next one when I eventually sell my z4. The golf r is good if its your only car that has to do everything, but the c7 is beautiful but unpractical, and the 335 is in between I'd say.
Gold comments, I almost got a golf r but ended up going for the s3, a few of your gripes are standard on the s3. Seats, led tail lights, and folding mirrors. How is the brake dust on the golf r? The s3 puts off a ton of brake dust, but stops like a maniac, also how is the mileage on this, the s3 ended up giving me pretty poor mileage 26 per tank average and never above 27 on the highway, well below the claimed 30 hwy.
sethssd I'm test driving the s3 next week.. I just wish there was a hatch, which would make it a no brainer for me. Brake dust is crazy lol mileage is what EPA states, but I do have to drive conservatively to reach EPA ratings of 30 hwy. I hope I can make a comparison video like I did with the GTI. We'll see what the dealership says.
zed4me yeah,I hear that. I wish the s3 still had a batch version, but it's still a good looking car, I just can't put truckloads of stuff in the boot anymore! But my wife has an suv for that anyways now
I have a question. Just got my Golf R last week. I only have one issue. The steering column on mine is off center to the left a little. It bothers me and I am wondering if VW can adjust the column to be on center. How is yours?
+Eric Matthews Never noticed any issues. If you mean that your car's alignment is off, they'll definitely fix that under warranty if you just got your car.
Alignment is fine. If you where to use the center of your chest as Zero dead center, then my column would be SLIGHTLY to the left. OCD kicks in. I want to see if VW can adjust the whole column over a touch to center the wheel.
Hi mate, thanks for your videos, great stuff. I'm in London UK and have just got the 2016 R too. Interesting to see the differences from US to UK model spec. You have inspired me to do a vlog!! Thanks again.
what brand for wheels would you replace your stock ones with? just looking to replace mine but don't want to have to use a fitting kit. looking for a brand that fits close to stock wheels
My car is also blue in colour (VW Scirocco R) and it shows dust more than other colours from my experience . Are you finding that this is the case for you also and do you know any products out there that helps with this problem?
+oppanheimer other than something like opti-coat, i'm not sure if anything would help. it wouldn't necessarily not show dust, but you can go longer between washes.

Gotta mention the droning noise when you have the trunk open! ALSO I have a stick so heel toeing is pretty hard because the Gas pedal is so low. its not too hard because I have pretty wide feet but not as easy an the STi I was going to buy instead! ALSO one last thing!!!! WE HAVE an electric parking break. for the manuals we should definitely get a mechanical one but who's complaining. Picked my 2016 up a few months ago and I've had nothing but joy driving that thing every day. I wish it wasn't my daily driver because it's seeing all the elements but I live very close to work so I don't mind. It makes driving to and from work wayyy more entertaining. Good vid! Are you thinking about modding it or tuning it in the future?
Does your car burn oil? My 2015 GTI goes through a quart every 4K miles which is pretty ridiculous compared to the 2006 G35 that I traded in for it which didn't even burn a 1/2 a quart between 7.5K oil changes.
zed4me some burn more oil in fact audi was sued over it a few years back. Unfortunately for me they haven't fixed the issue doubly so because the value of my car tanked after diesel gate so I am stuck with it
+Tom D i got a b7 passat 3.6 vr6 in january and a month or two ago it was out of oil and a month before that i had to buy an engine fan and it was low on coolant too
Nice review. I'm thinking of trading my used FR-S for a used GTI of some kind. Got to decide stick v auto, etc. I'm hesitant due to the turbo (extra complexity & thus potential repair expense) and quality of the stereo. The FRS has a crappy stereo, but if I trade cars, I want an excellent stereo, esp. w/a decent Subwoofer. What are your thoughts?
KutWrite The Fender audio system is a nine-speaker system that is just amazing. I've listened to FRS and its just a joke of a stereo (can't blame em though). GTI have great manual shifters, but the DSG is great too, you can't go wrong either way. If you don't plan on doing stage 1 on the GTI, you'll unlikely have any turbo issues. Even with stage 1, its relatively safe.. though for many people, turbos either fail very quickly (within thousands of miles, new) or much much further down the road.
Wow! If those are the complaints you came up with, that's not bad! Minor stuff. If I could get a Golf R the way I want it, it would... 1. Have a 6 speed manual transmission. 2. Be a 2 door model. 3. Have a sunroof.
Kamofy Yeah. I heard that the next shipment of them will be manual. It still won't have a sunroof. Oh well, maybe next time. I did check out the one we got at the VW dealership I work at.
I have yet to see one at the dealer near me, but will definitely take it for a test drive. Tbh, after doing a 24 hour test drive in the mk7 gti I am not impressed with the interior quality when compared to my mk6 autobahn. The mk7 did have a louder grunt and better road feel though imo.
Kamofy I've had the opportunity to take a couple new GTIs on nice length dealer trades and I like them, especially with the Performance Package. Setting the car in 'sport' mode does create a nice growl. I'd get one of those at this point before the R.
Probably, but not for any good reason other than "muh consumerism". If anything the price of the "faulty" cars should go up because they don't have the performance robbing, engine killing, EPA BS attached to them anymore.
Nice vid. My thoughts on the mirrors though. I don't know about most other countries, but I did live in Germany for a few years. I noticed that their roads are very narrow in most parts. That may explain the mirror thing. Would be nice to have them still, I agree but not really needed in the US.
I may be picking one up in a couple weeks.. 2nd round shipments.. Assuming my trade number is good.. My only hesitation is not having a sunroof. I know it is a R.. I've had plenty of evos, gti, Porsche, Lotus etc without a sunroof.. But it would be my daily driver.. Id get another full on track car. So the debate is this or a Gti with a pano roof. I like the power and awd though
Yea i may.. Had a 987.2 boxster spyder as a convert and an s4 audi cab.. But many without sunroof.. But usually my daily drivers.. I probably wouldn't use it anyways. Great videos btw. Like your channel
Most of those issues aren't a problem for me in Australia the only thing I don't like is the shit turning circle I thought being a small car it would turn in a dime but nooo it's crap my Lexus is350 turns way better. Can anyone explain why and if there is a fix for this. Thanks ps love it vids. I'm going to my baby stage 1 next week
I drove one after I bought my new GTI and the lack of a sunroof bothered me quite a bit. Also the wheels...19" is just overkill for a hot hatch. I actually really like my Austin wheels style and size. The Pretoria wheels should be standard in 18" on all R though. I'm with you on the LED tails and lack of auto folding mirrors...for at or near $40k the R should have this for sure. The VW bean counters really like to screw the US market...however, if they did offer all the goodies this R would probably cost $45k.
There are a bunch of options that I would want and offered in every single country except the US. As the reviewer mentioned, the cloth seats would be more comfortable... electric folding mirrors... Pretoria wheel option...LED lights...and additionally for me, fog lights (not even part of the design but GTI gets that), panoramic roof (optional everywhere except US), the various parking and blind monitoring and braking systems, 8" Navi screen (US does not get this)... oddly enough here in the US, almost all the things I mentioned come standard or optional on the GTI...VAG corporate just continue to patronize their loyal fan base who have discretionary bucks to spend... this is coming from a 1991Corrado owner... bought new back in 1991 and that car put a smile on my face every time I drove it... yeah there were some typical VW electrical and mechanical gremlins, but that car handled and performed very well... I'm willing to spend $50K for a Golf R with all the bells and whistles but VW US doesn't want my money... oh well, elsewhere I go... Mercedes, here I come...
+tilmonr I'd say so. If you couldn't tell from this video, the R is an amazing car and these dislikes are mere jokes. For the price, it can't be beat in terms of interior, luxury, and performance as an all around package.
tilmonr I take my answer back. The RS5 is one of my favorite cars lol but honestly, unless you need the utility of the R, I'd keep the RS5. I've never heard the sound system in the Audi, but the Fender system in the R, while not bad by any means, is nothing to write home about.
Interesting video. I personally dont like the Golf R where power delivery is concerned because it doesnt rev very high, i preffer natural asiparation. Although i realise high revving engines are dying out thanks to emissions, which really is a sad fact as high revs are incredible fun! All in all though a good video though! I personally cannot think of anything i hate about my car and it is almost 10 years old and ive owned it since new
Joe Smith I don't use the car as a daily, my fiancee does. So I meant I haven't taken the car out cause its been raining and I only take joy rides in good weather.
zed4me lol... I used to be the same way with my vehicles until I realized, hey this is just a car and I'll be getting an updated model within a few years anyway. Now I just get in and bomb around the streets without being overly anal about weather. I do like detailing though so getting it dirty ain't no thing. May I suggest a solution for your interior dust problem? I use 303 Aerospace Protectent to repel dust and finger prints from dash. I also keep a small Cali car duster in the glove box.
The reason we don't have the nice features the euro model has: among those- LED tail light, wheel & color options, pano roof, brushed aluminum mirrors, a bigger and better nav screen, and last but not least the thing I miss the most - the Variant version: the R costs 40K in America, and to add all these options the car will be close to 50-55K in Europe. And who would pay 50K for a fully loaded Golf, when you can get a BMW M2 for that... (from a GTI driver)
swap the lights to led, northamarican law says the signal needs to be 1 inch high and the l.e.d version is not so it is not allowed here, I would have added no sun roof till next year :S
I don't own R but one thing I don't get why R doesn't have LED fog lights like 10k cheaper GTI? Yes, no LED tail lights. VW will bring them later same what they did with 2012 and 2013.1 GLI.
18 inch wheels will help a little bit. But 17s will be a huge improvement in ride quality and noise. Especially if you get light weight ones under 18lbs.
joo baggs Some people had issues fitting 17s after balancing with wheel weights.. the calipers would scrape at the weights. I think 17's look fine, but just don't want to get a set of wheels and tires only to find out they won't fit. 18's will fit for sure, and are still a good improvement.
joo baggs True. I guess if you see someone else using the same wheels in 17's they're probably a good bet. But I really want the Neuspeed RSE10's when they come out in 18's next month. :)
Yeah Nuespeed make great VW wheels that don't need hub centric rings. Also look for tires that don't have the XL load rating. Those have extra stiff sidewalls!
Good review...the Golf R looks real nice, but too similar to the Mk6 GTI/R in my humble opinion. Does your cabin rattle?....my MK6 GTI was full of interior plastic rattles and creaks! That's why I now drive a BMW! But I do miss the Golf in many many ways. Those alloys look great. In Europe we only get the 18" version of the Cadiz wheels with the Pretorian ones as 19" options....so you may be missing the tinted LED rear lights in the USA, but I would prefer the 19" cadiz, they actually look better than the pretorian ones when the car is in motion (at slow speeds!).
DaveClass47 The lines are different, making the 7R distinct from the 6R, but Golfs have always been evolutionary more than revolutionary in design. The 19" cadiz grow on you when you realize they're really not heavy for OEM 19" wheels. And nope! No rattles. Maybe they will begin a little later on.
zed4me Hi, thanks for that info! I see you guys get leather interior as standard too?....we brits have to shell out £1800 for this. Ouch! I have just got the BMW 1series 125 M. But the Golf R is definitely on my shopping list in the future. I would have to do with the 18" Cadiz, which is no great shame.
Aww same here man. I just got my GTI built and delivered from Germany. It's only a S model so I didn't expect too much but the goddamn side mirrors don't fold in. My other car (a 1999 Toyota) does that with a touch of a button so the fact that this brand new German machinery doesn't include that, really twisted me knickers!!!
I know that it's pretty easy to swap out the North American stock taillights for the better, Euro-spec LED ones, but it's quite disappointing in my opinion that they just aren't better to begin with, even in North America. It low-key really bothers me that they are the exact same taillights as in the GTI, TSI, and even the totally-base Golf. Other than that, its better in every way.
Why does America always seem to never get a full kit hatchback. Even here in Australia we get EVERYTHING for the Golf R. I couldn't fathom buying a Golf R in America when you know that it doesn't come with everything its suppose to come with. It's like buying a trial version of the R lol.
I agree with the dust. yuk. but dash looks great.I tried also for the 19" pretoria wheels vw say not an option in australia. no option 2 door! but look at it in silver. the colour i purchased.also you will have payed a lot less than the $62.000 au i had to fork out thats why you dont have all the toys including led rear tail lights we have here. sometimes you cant have your cake and eat it! the mirrors turn down in reverse. and spot lights light your driveway when turning from the side of the front lights.clever, the best bit the blue lights on the doors and sills.
legitimate points and concerns, some people wouldn't really class these as noteworthy. if that is all someone has to say about their car, then this is the one i want :)
I dislike only one thing in my Golf R : I don't own one.
+mcnszpr you can have his, I'm sure daddy will buy him one that's more comfortable with smaller wheels next time.
+Steve Brookes awwwe did daddy never buy you things.
I'd swap ( in my ) to ( about the ), personally i think it would make more sense.
One thing I hate about my golf R: I don't have one.
LOL!
abd bach In next week or so, i will pickup my new GTI Clubsport instead.. (R engine & 290 HP)
Sweet! Good luck and have fun ;)
People buying sports cars then complain about comfort should be slapped on the face and get their vehicles confiscated.
true. Especially when they want 18s instead of 19s
Macka Boy that just didn't make sense to me :/
+greathey1234 You can't actually call this a sports car lol.
+IShoNoHonor I know why you say that, but I cant agree.
This is 10x the sports car, that a Mazda MX5 is.
+greathey1234 he's a whiny spoiled berk (using the rhyming slang instead of what I meant) .... he'll be complaining his diamond slippers are a bit tight next
The fact that he is being so nitpicky here should tell you how great the new R is.
+Pj McCartney If only 95% of the internet had half your IQ
they are good performance vehicles for the first few days hahaha. after that it turns into a shop queen.
@@umerhakim try again 😀
@@umerhakim how's your Fiat doin'?
The only thing I dislike is that there is no sunroof/moonroof. That car would look amazing with one.
that is a option, it is available
+Nathaniel Zhang not in the states it isn't
one thing i don't like about this R.....the driver.
if you want 18" wheels....buy yourself a set of 18"
if you want led tail lights, retrofit a set of led tails.
those seats are R sport seats....designed to keep you firm and fixed...if you want comfort...buy the trend-line :)
retrofit those trims in carbon fiber or something else so it wont be that dusty.
RETROFIT!!!
geeeeeez
PS: im from europe :P
+DVVFane P.S. I dont care.
+DVVFane The 18" wheels and R sport seats are definitely things that should be left up to the buyer to change, but not having led tail lights on the North America version is kind of bullshit. Sure you can retrofit LED tail lights yourself... for $1000.
Michael L I got my tail lights for $400 here in Europe. Not new, but hey...that was cheap :)
You forgot that there is no sun roof in the US model.
You yanks really get short changed with no led tail lights and no folding mirrors.
Mark Denyer No LED glove box light, boot light, smaller infotainment screen, un-opening arm rest etc
Kevin Ryan That's just crazy. I can't justify the cost of a new R-series. Maybe I'll get one used or something if I ever go that route.
Mark Denyer Yeah, I love those on my GTI! When I see them on another car I think, damn this car looks good at night :)
Mark Denyer Not to mention only available in 5 door with a DSG. No 3 door, no manual 'box.

Hey zed4me! Just wanna thank you for all the Golf R videos!!! I watched all your videos (and all other videos on RUclips) about the R before I bought mine 7 weeks ago.
Halogen tail lights in a 2015 model car is ridiculous! LED ought to be an industry standard.
They want you to spend more for something that should be standard now...
The problem is US import laws
+Kelvin Waters ye MY 2015 GLI HAS LEDs tails
+Kelvin Waters The euro led tails look so much better in colour and design too. I put led bulbs into mine, a lot brighter, but still design is not as nice as the euro ones.
***** You can get them for $500 shipped from Germany
hey man i have noticed the black plastic get so dusty because of static try rubbing it down with a dryer sheet after you detail you car it has really helped me out
+Ramatorix I will do that next time! Thanks for the tip
no problem man. Clean car and I hope it helps
Rear tints are standard, I got mine today full option including the factory painted black wheels lapiz blue.
jason21jburg Option here in the UK.
+camelsac gutting, literally had mine a day, loving it but coming on boost in race mode the fear changes are pretty harsh
+Md Mohammad fear changes even
I'm glad at the end you qualified this by saying it was "nit picky" and you had to put in effort to come up with them. The whole time I was thinking these are petty lol!
funny you buy an R and complain about comfort bought the wrong car buddy
You just got a new sub. I like the style of this video hope the rest is just as good. Love your Golf 😄
That's good advice! I wonder if he ever tried it?
my biggest complaint about the R is that it doesn't have the overdrive the GTI has. The R runs 900 rpms more in 6th (DSG) than my GTI at 70mph.
I wish it had a lower ratio in top gear as well.. would help with gas mileage which isn't great.
that's my beef too - imagine my shock seeing my rpms on the highway after going from a TDI lol
Evan S what's the mpg like on the highway
hwy only is 27. city 21. combined is 24
hmm thats not that good of an average, is this car faster then an STI, how easy is it to mod it, maybe add a larger turbo
hows the understeer when your rally pushing it? after all it is a front wheel drive based system for the 4 motion .. I was just wonder because i was thinking of getting one
Try one of the California dusters for the dust issue, I got the large one and the smaller one, I keep the smaller one for the inside jobs and it picks up well, just brush it across the dash every once in awhile.
Carl O cool.. i just do a quick wipedown with microfiber towel every time i wash the car. small issue.
Why don't you buy the LED tail lights and replace them with the Halogen one, as well as the 5 spoke wheels for the 10 spoke wheels
+Car Lads The tail lights I can't afford for just an aesthetic mod lol but I did get new wheels, browse through my channel :)
Oh sweet! :D And thanks for the quick reply ;)
And the LED ones werent up to standards, its allowed in Europe but not in US
es3502012 One inch* Also we can get the LED from ECS for 850... ouch.
The folding mirrors can more than likely be turned on using Vagcom or similar if you enquire about it
Ian Fraser they're not the same mirrors
I also have a MK7 Golf R and, luckily, I've not had any problems with the seats on long drives. The only thing I dislike seat related is I feel the driving position is just a bit too high.
MCMarkyTee Most hatches have pretty high seating position. It helps with visibility and daily comfort.. But I so see what you're saying
How about the fact that when you close the door the bare paint still shows inside the car? I have the new s3 sedan btw
Regarding the suspension:
The roads where I live are mostly in very good shape - even with the suspension set to race, it's not too firm. If driving on poor pavement, the suspension will seem a little too firm even on the comfort setting.
So far, I've got only 2 complaints:
1) No sunroof is available on the 2015 R.
Thanks man! I will do that. Keep posting more videos, they are great!
Hi how do you like the sound system?
do you have the premium sound system or the basic one?
I test drove a Golf R a few weeks ago. I agree with you about the 19" wheels. The stiff ride on terrible Michigan roads was a major concern. You must not have the DCC option. Test car didn't have it either and I was wondering if you've heard how effect it is in smoothing out the bumps especially during highway driving.
I have DCC. It's great. I never complain about the ride in this car
Awesome blue color on your R. I know that the 6 speed is coming to the new Golf R, but is VW bringing back the 3 door Golf R??
Reckless40 nobody really knows lol I'd hope so though!
Great video,
Does the car have any annoying rattles so far?
I've been considering the R (or R Variant if it become official for US market)
The one thing that really bugs me about my TDi CUP (mkv) is the rattles.
drwong84 No rattles to speak of.. Though there is a slight ringing when the AC is on and you're in stop and go traffic. It only happens sometimes as well.
*****
Thanks for the heads up, i have first hand experience with missing wire clips on my VW.
Hmmm still don't know cause I'm thinking either the golf r or BMW 335is 2011 yes which ever one I get I'm tuning them to Max out 600+ hp I just don't know which of the two to get but also the slight chance of the corvette c7 2015 please help.
nino callava
Those are very different cars..
Eric Matthews Not sure if this is possible. I haven't noticed this myself though.
I'm loving neuspeed.. wish they had more variety in 17" but their 18" wheels are awesome and I have a set myself.
zed4me . awesome. i'm assuming neuspeed don't need fitting kits?
nope, they make wheels specific for vw's
zed4me nice dude. thanks so much for your response. one more thing. your stage one upgrade, is that an APR flash?

Very nice objective video, well done.
Does your car burn oil? My 2015 GTI goes through a quart every 4K miles which is pretty ridiculous compared to the 2006 G35 that I traded in for it which didn't even burn a 1/2 a quart between 7.5K oil changes.
Mine does not burn oil.. sometimes it's a hit or miss with these I feel like.
zed4me some burn more oil in fact audi was sued over it a few years back. Unfortunately for me they haven't fixed the issue doubly so because the value of my car tanked after diesel gate so I am stuck with it
+Tom D i got a b7 passat 3.6 vr6 in january and a month or two ago it was out of oil and a month before that i had to buy an engine fan and it was low on coolant too
+zed4me what do you think about the a45 amg in comparison to your golf r?
+hi9580 amg if you can afford it
zed4me it's only 30k more the golf r, though that was close enough for comparison
Robert Gaugler This! The no 2 door for NA has disqualified the MK7 R from my list. Too bad...sigh Btw, they will offer a manual next year.
Kamofy I'm in no rush to buy. I have a 2006 GTI with 128k miles, but is still going strong! :)
Im thinking the value of all VWs will drop due to the recent scandal?
Probably, but not for any good reason other than "muh consumerism". If anything the price of the "faulty" cars should go up because they don't have the performance robbing, engine killing, EPA BS attached to them anymore.
MrPixelous They just pollute the air and damage our lungs....Unlike v8 engines.
+buildmorefarms100 I wish, I'd love to buy a Golf R on the cheap. It doesn't look like the prices on those dropped at all sadly.
***** The USA is concerned about air quality...

I've seen the upgrade for the folding mirrors somewhere.
Nice vid. My thoughts on the mirrors though. I don't know about most other countries, but I did live in Germany for a few years. I noticed that their roads are very narrow in most parts. That may explain the mirror thing. Would be nice to have them still, I agree but not really needed in the US.
C Quinn where in the US do you live? i would find it very convenient in nyc where they get closed every time the car is parked lol
zed4me Right now Im in Georgia. I'm trying to get back to Germany though. Workwise I guess the US isn't for me.
C Quinn Georgia is very different from NYC lol I could see how folding mirrors aren't necessary there
Do the side view mirrors dip (or turn down) when you reverse?
Troy H No they don't, think there may be something in VCDS for that, but not positive.
Troy H Only in ROW cars...
where can you buy those led tail lights? or is it just strictly in Europe?
+Juan Perez-Gun Fanatic they are readily available online
Sorry if this has been asked, but how is the mileage? I've got a 2004 R32.
SlashyJ EPA hit it right on the head. I get 30mpg highway, and my lifetime MPG is 24mpg since I do a lot more city than highway driving.
We don't have that shit here in Canada either. US are not the only deprived ones.
You don't get the LED tail lights due to US DOT regulations. Pretty straight forward mod if you want them, I'm installing mine this weekend.
Hubscharber Good luck! I'm not afraid of the wiring or the VCDS, I'm afraid of the cost to convert lol!
zed4me shopdap.com has a pretty fool proof way of doing it. You're already in for a 36k car, just go the extra mile so it looks the part.
I think the numb bumb is prob something to do with your circulation dude
Can the mirrors be swapped out or modded to auto fold like the euro models?
+hugdeath929 Anything is possible with money! But yes, it's been done many times by those on the forum.
+zed4me hanks
+hugdeath929 *thanks
interesting. i thought the e-parking brake would stay in the euro model
nice comments : i have a tiguan with the same dash and for dust use wipes and they cut down on the dust big time but it is a pain
Shahul Usman Get the R. I don't even miss it and I come from driving cars with sunroofs and even convertibles.
Yea i may.. Had a 987.2 boxster spyder as a convert and an s4 audi cab.. But many without sunroof.. But usually my daily drivers.. I probably wouldn't use it anyways. Great videos btw. Like your channel
I bought a cheap duster at the dollar store that I keep in the trunk so dust can get wiped away often.
Question, I have a 2016 manual R on hold. Is it worth it?
+tilmonr I'd say so. If you couldn't tell from this video, the R is an amazing car and these dislikes are mere jokes. For the price, it can't be beat in terms of interior, luxury, and performance as an all around package.
+zed4me cool. One more question, I have an RS5, not comparing the two... but how does the sound system stack up to the B&O that Audi has?
tilmonr I take my answer back. The RS5 is one of my favorite cars lol but honestly, unless you need the utility of the R, I'd keep the RS5. I've never heard the sound system in the Audi, but the Fender system in the R, while not bad by any means, is nothing to write home about.
zed4me lol, I'm keeping the RS5, I'm getting rid of my Infiniti G35. I need a new main ride. The RS5 only comes out on the weekends.
What about rear leg room, I'm 6 foot and when I go to the rear seat ....no room
M Lee I’m 6’0” too. They’re not that bad actually. I own a mk7 golf and I can sit comfortably behind my own seating position
I love my golf r.
Does it suck that it dosent come with fog lights and a sunroof
Does it come with timing chain or timing belt?
Interesting video. I personally dont like the Golf R where power delivery is concerned because it doesnt rev very high, i preffer natural asiparation. Although i realise high revving engines are dying out thanks to emissions, which really is a sad fact as high revs are incredible fun!
All in all though a good video though! I personally cannot think of anything i hate about my car and it is almost 10 years old and ive owned it since new
Surely the leds and mirrors are down to VW usa, rather than VW themselves?
Do you have the navigation package with your golf r
Izaiah Budhoo Yes, all the pre-orders came with navigation
You dont drive your awd car in the rain? Whats so bad about rain anyway?
How about not been able to open closing the windows with the remote.
I have a golf r mk7 and if you can only come up with these then you definitely know its awesome.
Btw in Aus I got the blackened tailights :P
The reason we don't have the nice features the euro model has: among those- LED tail light, wheel & color options, pano roof, brushed aluminum mirrors, a bigger and better nav screen, and last but not least the thing I miss the most - the Variant version: the R costs 40K in America, and to add all these options the car will be close to 50-55K in Europe. And who would pay 50K for a fully loaded Golf, when you can get a BMW M2 for that... (from a GTI driver)
do you have dynaudio sound? if you have how does it sound? pm if u want.
i own dynaudio in my golf 7 gti and it sounds brilliant, however the subwoofer is not that strong at all...
is that a Club pedal lock you have?
Steering wheel lock for when I park in the city
19" cadiz are an optional extra lol they come with 18" from factory
Not for 2015
@@zed4me on my 2015 I had 18" cadiz from factory
@@naswarkhan1772 that's because it was not one of the launch editions like this one is
I hate the price tag.
Do hoy know if the golf R comes With sunroof ??
monche alcaraz Unfortunately not
I know how you feel about the mirrors....shits me off about my golf too....should come as standard if you're paying such a high price
swap the lights to led, northamarican law says the signal needs to be 1 inch high and the l.e.d version is not so it is not allowed here, I would have added no sun roof till next year :S
Why would VW give lower spec to the US? I imagine the volume of sales would warrant them getting the same spec as we do
+Sean c Yep. Previous generation Golf R sold very well in the US...
Totally agree about the Euro tail lights and wheels. Great video.
Yeah depends on the barrel design and weight placement. They are glued on so you can just move them if they touch.
joo baggs True.
Those have extra stiff sidewalls!
joo baggs Do you know if XL helps with pinch flats because of the stiffer sidewalls? I care about comfort, but also about reliability and handling
Yeah I checked them out online. It sucks that I'd have to rewire them for them to do what I want.
Biggest complaint...I have replaced clutch and flywheel twice. Carbon fiber garbage.
WTF is up with the rear wiper?
i agree on the wheels and rear led lights... that's a bummer
i hope they can fix these complaints on the R in a couple years and make a two door version!
Why does America always seem to never get a full kit hatchback. Even here in Australia we get EVERYTHING for the Golf R. I couldn't fathom buying a Golf R in America when you know that it doesn't come with everything its suppose to come with. It's like buying a trial version of the R lol.
Are u from Ny? I'm considering getting a mk7 Golf R for a daily and keep my M3 as my weekend. Hit me up
I agree with the dust. yuk. but dash looks great.I tried also for the 19" pretoria wheels
vw say not an option in australia. no option 2 door! but look at it in silver. the colour i
purchased.also you will have payed a lot less than the $62.000 au i had to fork out
thats why you dont have all the toys including led rear tail lights we have here.
sometimes you cant have your cake and eat it!
the mirrors turn down in reverse. and spot lights light your driveway when turning
from the side of the front lights.clever, the best bit the blue lights on the doors and
sills.
legitimate points and concerns, some people wouldn't really class these as noteworthy. if that is all someone has to say about their car, then this is the one i want :)
