By the way, I'd love to see how these perform through your 9mm carbines. I have both a Ruger PCC and a Keltec Sub 2000 myself. This is very interesting to consider.
Your right, I should have tried a few rounds thru my Ruger PC Carbine, although they probably would have exited thru the back of the gel. Maybe I will do another test using my carbine.....just for the heck of it.

ShootingaTheBull410's Ammoquest series featured this same bullet. He ran the the +P version out of a SIG P938 3in barrel and averaged 1038fps while here it was 1078 from the 3.1 Sig P365. So Barnes upped the speed it looks like. This exact bullet was disqualified from the Ammoquest before moving on to the denim portion of the tests because in bare gel 1 of the bullets at 1036fps failed to completely expand and another, 1033fps, did not expand at all, overpenetrating by 1.25 in, the maximum being 18in.
I was carrying a s&w model 681 .357mag for 5years for my work-armed security officer- and liked the way the Sabers worked in real world situations - they were accurate at distances up to 50/60 yards with high impact on target- i won many a bet with that weapon lol- i could hit 10 ring at 100yards using hard ball ammo- the rifling in a 681 is a full turn in 8inches- my pistol had a 4 &1/8th inch barrel- and i used hand loaded ammo- 10.5 grains of nitro express powder
Thank you. This is the best video I have seen on JHP expansion. I have great concern with over penetration. We all know the danger of it. There are some bullets that will end up in the next zip code. I have seen the Leigh 9mm. The last thing anyone wants is to hurt anyone other than the threat. I have seen what ball ammo can do. It is scary. Going through car seats etc.
That puff of smoke was pretty cool and I have never seen that happen before. I'm guessing the bullet might have hit some denim that was in the gel from a previous test, causing it to burn up from the friction.
Always a pleasure MIXUP, nice test , good results , take care out there . I will have to catch up on your videos , I was unable to watch from Tuesday evening until today . Hello Mike. I use a Canon video recorder and it takes amazing video and it was well worth the investment. I appreciate the feedback and I also thank you for being a one year subscriber to my channel.
I carry these every day in my xd-s mod 2.. I've tested a handful of popular rounds like the hst, critical defense and duty, and gold dots . I've never had a Barnes xpb bullet fail to expand . Even with heavy clothing protocol... Vs every other hollowpoint I've test has failed one way or another. Heavy clothing and short barrels are a recipe for bullet failure.
Wow, these were very impressive rounds. I am going to check them out and if the price doesn't give me sticker shock I will buy a box or two. I almost melted the other day test firing a pistol in the desert. Stay in the shade my friend. Thanks for doing the testing and chrono work. 🤠👍
I paid $24 a box for this ammo, which I thought was very reasonable, especially when compared to the cost of some of the other premium ammo on the market. And yes, ammo prices are still way too high, and I hope the prices continue to drop.
@@mixup98 Yes, that is a decent price right now. I am going to pick up a box or two and carry them in the two pistols that I use the most for EDC. I hope the prices continue to drop as well, I would like to catch up with my range time this autumn and winter. Best wishes to you and your son.
With so many municipalities making lead bullets illegal, this is a great option for CONSISTENT results from a non-lead bullet. Thanks for the great videos! We always appreciate your work
I like them too. And just so everyone knows, this is the exact same load as the Barnes tac xpd 115 grain +p The only difference is the bullet is tinted black and the cases aren't nickel plated. These are some of the best self defense bullets on the market.. they laugh at heavy clothing and they expand perfectly every time . Several companies load these bullets hotter. Corbon dpx loads use this same bullet , and Barnes also offers it as a reloading component. They bullet itself is called " xpb"
Yeppers yeppers, same number on the box as what I have. #32005. Well, that's nice to know. Thank you. And cheers from Alaska. BTW, the high today (up here) was 62°F.
Well now this was a interesting video and a very interesting copper bullet. I carry a sig Sauer p365 XL and have always loaded it with Hornady critical duty, but I would not mind switching to the barnes solid copper projectiles. After seeing the way that the barnes copper hollow points performed I have to admit that I was impressed.
For my Taurus G3C I have yet to find a hollow point that will not jam, they get caught on the feed ramp. Taurus replaced the barrel and polished it and still jam's. I'll give it one more go with those, impressive!
Have you tried Hornady Critical Defense? Federal makes (or used to make, anyway) a series of ammo using an "E-FMJ" bullet; Expanding Full Metal Jacket. The bullet is jacketed entirely, but the forward 1/3rd or so of the interior is not lead like a typical FMJ is. Instead, it's a soft polymer or plastic material, and the jacket is pre-scored internally to create pre-determined split lines. The nose of the E-FMJ is a tiny bit blunted and flat, but no real pronounced hard edges like a JHP cavity. The E-FMJ is directed at people like the Subjects of New Jersey, all of whom aren't allowed to carry JHP "cop killer" ammo. 🙄 The E-FMJ did not do that great in Tnoutdoors9's testing, IIRC, but if it's the only ammo your gun will run, you have no choice.
Yes indeed, I was extremely impressed with the performance of this Barnes ammo. I don't know why every ammo manufacturer doesn't offer copper bullet ammo.
I just bought a 9mm PCC and was looking for some hot rounds for it. I found some Double Tap +P ammo that was using these exact bullets with a posted velocity of 1350fps. I can only imagine how that's going to perform out of a carbine length barrel.
If you want something for a PCC, then the Underwood XD rounds are the way to go. The extra speed of a PCC tends to put hollow points outside of their optimal velocity windows.
Pretty impressive every category. I’ll probably continue running my HST’s but the short barrel performance illustrated is tempting me to throw some in a Beretta Nano. I run Precision ammo in a .380 I have, maybe I’ll try these in .380 too. Good work Sir.
I like the Sig P365 pistols and the NRA edition looks sharp. I currently carry an XDS in 45 but I'm thinking about switching to the 365 for increased capacity. Nice ammo review ! I think these rounds would serve anyone very well for defense purposes.
I used to carry a S&W Shield but I switched over to the P365 because of the increased capacity. I am very well protected with a P365 loaded with Barnes copper bullets.
Hard to beat a springfield XDS 45 with a couple extra mags...just sayin🤷♂️ no replacement for displacement as they say...cant ever make a 4 cylinder a V8 HEMI no matter how much you "turbo" (+p) it🤣 i carry the same XDS..hard to beat the ambi mag release..grip safety...tactile loaded chamber indicator etc...LOVE MY XDS 45
Hey Mix, glad to see your new videos especially on Lake Mead. I would love to come on by sometime and hang out with you and your son some day. I don't know if I told you this before, but my dad had lined up 5 or 6 .22 LR casings, and shot a good 4 off in a row, one handed with my uncle's Ruger MK3 target model. It was about maybe 10 feet away, so not far but I couldn't replicate it haha. Would like to see a .22 (or any other caliber doesn't matter) "difficult shots" video. Maybe try toothpicks, shell casings, matches etc. It would be fun to see. May God bless you and your family 🤲🏼
That is some pretty impressive shooting by your dad and those .22 cases. I don't think my old eyeballs would allow me to shoot and hit those small targets but I'm sue my son would do very well at hitting most of them. Maybe we will put together a "difficult shots" video and see what happens. Thanks for the suggestion!
Very nice illustrations! I carry two calibers (actually 3). 45 acp from various 1911s and 10 shot pistols and the 5.7 x 28mm from a Ruger 57, and the 22 TCM from a RIA 5" 1911. The 9mm is by far the most common carry caliber. But I question it as being the best. But with the ammo you used, it looks to be a very capable weapon. Now with using that ammo for the 45 acp, it would be even more capable imho. I hope you can do a test with the 5.7 x 28mm and/or the 22 TMC. Those are both VERY capable rounds as well. Love all your videos that you and your son put out! Both of you are very capable shooters! Thanks!
Unfortunately I don't have access to either a 5.7x28mm or a .22 TMC firearm, therefore I can't do a review on them. Hopefully that will change sometime in the future. Thank you for the nice compliment regarding my son and I.
I forgot I bought 2 boxes of this during the madness of 2020/21. Thanks for the reminder. I do worry about packing this just in case I would have to use them. I prefer to pack something like a Winchester white box hollow point that's just a Plain Jane round instead of The Man Killer 3000 round if I end up in court.
Monolithic bullets (stupid name for solid, one metal) are the way of the future. Military Arms Channel tested Liberty Civil Defense a few years ago. His 9mm ammo defeated level 3A body armor. That being said, I carry Liberty with a heavy 147gr FMJ staggered every third round. I call it the “head thumper,” because for a head shot, I want a sledge hammer. Anyway, I’ve been carrying Liberty ammo but I think I will try to find some of this good Barnes stuff (made here in my home state).
The .7” final diameter of the bullet’s “petals” is a little misleading as they’re fully bent back from the resistance of the medium. The bullet goes from a cone-shape before entering the medium, to fully expanded when the petals are straight out to the sides all around. So when they’re fully expanded, before they start bending back, the diameter would probably be closer to 1” at some point in their travel.
Which is why those were some of the gnarliest wound cavities I've seen in gel fro 115gr. Usually 115s with that expansion stop before 12" and takes a 124gr to obtain spec. These were just impressive.
Good morning Frank. I see your point and I have to agree with you regarding the measurement of the fully expanded pedals, although I'm not sure if bending the pedals straight out to take a measurement would also be misleading. When fired into the gel the pedals would only be fully expanded for a millisecond before bending back. I believe that measuring the bullets with their bent pedals is the proper measuring technique, but I do thank you for the interesting analysis.
Looks like decent personal defense ammo. Our local Cabela's used to carry Barnes X-bullets (solid copper) for handloading, back before the pandemic. I've loaded and tested them in several calibers and have been quite favorably impressed with their expansion and weight retention. They're a good choice for short-range deer hunting in the larger calibers and at appropriate velocities. I don't think you'll find a better personal defense round. Cheers.
I am also a reloader and hopefully the X-bullets will show up again on dealer shelves. I got lucky and picked up a thousand small pistol primers this morning at Bass Pro Shops, although they cost ninety bucks, where just two years ago they would have cost me about $40.
@@mixup98 Our BPS (aka Cabela's) is hit and miss on reloading supplies. Sometimes they have powders, once in a while they have primers, but there's no way to be sure except to go there and ask. There's another place in town that always has primers, but they're CCI OEM primers and they charge $200/1,000, while singing "Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me."
Pretty impressive ammo test, I've never found that brand in my area but maybe I just overlooked it. You said your carry gun is the P365, I've looked at those but couldn't make up my mind between it and the Glock 26 or Taurus GX4. Anyway thanks for another informative video.

Glock 19 putting in stellar results once again...velocities and consistencies...that glock tenifer hexagonal rifling working its magic 🎩 again 🙌
WOW! This would be the same as the Federal HST. I didn't think another bullet would do that. Great video, Thanks!
Wow Mixup, I was always skeptical of these, but you've sold me on them. Now I just have to see what I can find locally here in southern Kansas.
@@mixup98 I've seen some others put two blocks end to end just to make sure they capture all rounds fired. Just a thought. Have a good Sunday. God bless, Rob
@@la_old_salt2241 Ballistics gel is rather expensive but I do hope to pick up another block in the future and set them end to end. Thanks for the suggestion.
Very consistent both expansion and penetration!
Great ammo , 9mm and 45 acp great videos 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Another good honest considered review 👍🇬🇧
Great video and what appears to be a very impressive round, the consistency and penetration are perfect!
👍😎
Well i use to swear by Remington Golden Sabres but now it seems i need to change to these Barnes bullets/ammo- thank u for opening mt eyes Sir
Good morning Idus. I am hoping to test some Golden Saber ammo in the future and I will see how it compares with the Barnes ammo.
Great review. I liked the puff of smoke coming out of the gel on the one shot.
That puff of smoke was pretty cool and I have never seen that happen before. I'm guessing the bullet might have hit some denim that was in the gel from a previous test, causing it to burn up from the friction.
That expands to the size of 45acp expansion. Awesome round!
I don't like monolithic Copper bullets , but now I am sold.
The deep penetration and live effect on the gel😳
Seems like the best defensive ammo so far
The Barnes is definitely the best expanding ammo that I have tested so far.
That's a great self-defense round thanks for the video 👍
Impressive! 9mm FINALLY HAS AN EDGE!
Always a pleasure MIXUP, nice test , good results , take care out there . I will have to catch up on your videos , I was unable to watch from Tuesday evening until today .
My appendix ruptured Tuesday night and had to have emergency surgery , just got home after lunch today ,
I got to say it was truly an excruciatingly painful experience .
Wow! Sorry to hear about your ruptured appendix Tom and I'm glad you are doing much better. My son had his appendix rupture when he was eleven years old. Fortunately he was already in the hospital when it happened. Trust me, I know what you went through, and I pray for a speedy recovery.
@@mixup98 Thanks big man , it really hurts bad , hopefully in a couple of weeks I will be able to be full steam ahead again , right now just trying to make it .
I appreciate the videos big man keep em' coming .
Thank you mixup98 for another great and educational video!! By the way your video clarity is spot on buddy, Good job keep them coming. Really love watching them.....
@@mixup98
Yes, that is a decent price right now.
We always appreciate your work
There is no lead in this bullet? And which is better copper or brass?
@@MusicLuv80 Yes there's no lead, the bullet itself is all copper, the casing is brass
@@aj897 Thanks for your answer.
Great stuff 👍🏻, thanks for another fine show and tell.
Looking forward to the next one.
Thanks again!
I like them too. And just so everyone knows, this is the exact same load as the Barnes tac xpd 115 grain +p
The only difference is the bullet is tinted black and the cases aren't nickel plated.
These are some of the best self defense bullets on the market.. they laugh at heavy clothing and they expand perfectly every time .
Several companies load these bullets hotter. Corbon dpx loads use this same bullet , and Barnes also offers it as a reloading component. They bullet itself is called " xpb"
I bought some Double Tap +P rounds using this bullet at a posted 1350fps.
Really good video. Thnak's for all your work to produce this content.
Yeppers yeppers, same number on the box as what I have. #32005. Well, that's nice to know. Thank you. And cheers from Alaska. BTW, the high today (up here) was 62°F.
Great video! They all performed perfectly! Beautiful expanded freedom pellets! I may be carrying those soon.
Polish your feed ramp .just take it down a little bit. and problem disappears .
@@nicholaspatti1526 Taurus did that, looks like a mirror
@@mitch5077 that's the way it's supposed to look
That's the best performing ammo I've seen wow. Sold. Great test.
Yes indeed, I was extremely impressed with the performance of this Barnes ammo. I don't know why every ammo manufacturer doesn't offer copper bullet ammo.
I saw these for the first time at the CO OP. They were very proud of those bullets going by price lol.
Another Great Video, very impressive testing results...Thanks for your time, effort and expense
You ae most welcome lanny and as always, I thank you for watching my videos.
I would not mind running these in my 9mm and I would like to see the results with 40S&W out of a 3" barrel. Thanks for the video.
You have good taste in carry Mix. I carry P365X with 147gr Federal HST's. These look interesting, but I tend to stick with HST's or Hydrshok.
Dont sleep on Federals Punch round. Good stuff 👍
@@theone031 I have 230gr Fed punch in my 1911, seems like good ammo.
That's good stuff. Gotta check my supply and see if I have some Barnes. Thanks for the test.
You are very welcome and thank you for watching my video.
That makes me happy simce I have some of that Barnes
I've carried Barnes Tac XP copper in my .380 for years. Hard to find them around here.
Perfect expansion and a great test.
Definitely would like to see how the Barnes .45s performs.
I will try and do a review within the next week or so. Stay tuned my friend.
I'm hoping to pick up a Taurus GX4 in the near future. I hate the thought of losing my Sig when I'm kayaking but losing a Taurus wouldn't hurt so much. Hopefully I will be doing a GX4 review in the near future.
