I'm just an occasional shooter. I don't like guns that much, but I still watched till the end and will always watch their videos, because I love mixup98.
Thank you for the video did not know about magazine break in. And thank you for being honest as well plus love the fact you love a gun yet tells us it has crappy trigger.
The trigger on the SCCY's are designed purposely to have a long pull and reset. They are intended to be concealed carry guns and do not have a manual safety. The trigger adds a degree of addition safety due to its operation. Plus, the triggers do smooth out during break in with proper maintenance. Yes, SCCY does have manual safety models available for those who want them.
Hello James. Rick is correct about why SCCY has a long trigger pull. My three SCCY pistols have all been extremely reliable and I like the fact that they come with either 2 or 3 magazines. I can certainly overlook a crappy trigger on a reliable self defense pistol. 👍👍
Great info for new shooters. With small caliber semi-autos, like .380 and below, I spend about 30 min or so racking the slide, without dry firing, about 300 to 500 times before I disassemble and clean it. It seems to smooth out any little rough spots in the slide and save me a lot of aggravation in the "break in" period. Similarly, with J-frame size revolvers I get snap caps in it any dry fire it as many times as I can in a few hours, alternating hands. IIt helps to smooth out the trigger a bit before I clean it and burn through a bunch of practice ammo. It also is a heck of a workout for your trigger fingers. LOL!
I followed the manual on my m&p sheild to the letter and Field stripped it just like you did when I first got it and broke it in just like you just did and that pistol runs perfect 👍🏻 FOLLOWING THE MANUAL!
Very nice "no nonsense" video on initial cleaning and breaking in. Thanks so much, always enjoy your productions and learn some things along the way. All The Best!!
Nice new pistol. I like your way of teaching, very calm and informative. The weather is nicer in Nevada then ND. I will live there some day, about 2 years from now. Thank you for the video sir.
66 years old, many years ago I purchased a couple of uplula magazine loaders. It was one of the best investments ever. My gen 1 sw m&p shield used to wear me out manually loading those mags. Thank you for your video. Whatever 9 mm or45 acp I take to the range, a uplula is in my range bag.
"Read the manual." That's the best practical advice and a great starting point. Even better was walking the viewer through some of the manuals. I just got done watching this video and your other one for the AR15 for new owners. Great stuff sir! Good explanations, and safety practices. Thankyou for sharing and walking newbies like me through this stuff.
Hello John. I'm glad my videos have been helpful and comments like yours are always highly appreciated. Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment on my videos and I look forward to hearing from you again.
I carry a Ruger EC9s and it runs great put about 600 rounds through so far I use WD40 dry lubricant on the mags inside and out and I clean my pistol with break free CLP works fine for me
GREAT video. Loads of helpful info and easy to understand. Just got a new Ruger LCP MAX .380 and followed the video step by step…just like I did with your video to clean my TX22 mags to address midfeeds. Really enjoy this channel.
I’m saving this video to watch again. Picked up my 1st pistol Tuesday. Reading the manual, but still lots of questions. Grateful for this timely video. Thank you! Hope to find an instructor like you- I’m only 21 hrs away, hint hint. 🤣 Hopefully my CCW instructor will let me hire him for 30 mins for my 1st time at the range. So much to learn, but I’m enjoying it. My goal is to be comfortable enough to carry. Awesome responsibility! 😎👍🏼
Congratulations on buying your first pistol. You are obviously a very mature and responsible person and gun owners like me love to see new owners like you that have a great attitude and are willing to learn and train with their new firearm. I have lots of "beginner" videos on youtube and I hope you get the chance to watch a few of them. Thank you for the great comment and I also thank you for watching our video. Here is one of my most popular beginner videos which I think you might enjoy: ruclips.net/video/1fG96eEtOqk/видео.html
GREAT channel for newbies! Had a Taurus TX22 with misfeed problems. So I cleaned the mags per another vid on this channel…and now clean all my mags regularly…. Almost no misdeeds!
Very good info as always. I have a para P-14 I S/S I bought new back in the mid 90's. I haven't shot it much(50 or so rounds) and the magazines are very hard to load all 14 rounds. I never realized I needed to break them in. Thanks so much for the useful info. Skip
Great video Ray and son, With all the new gun owners out there videos like this is a good find for them, To start a safe and fun hobby the right way on how to break in and clean your new weapon witch is a must!!!! Thanks again for all the information and entertainment. Cant wait till your next video!
Great video. This channel should be a go to for all levels of gun owners. I also typically dismantle new magazines and wipe off the follower and spring, and run a rag through the mag body. There's usually some packing oil and machine grime in there. I hate it when a new gun doesn't run!
I too learn something new with each video. Marking the magazine is an excellent idea i have had issues with mags before, once out of the pistol they are hard to distinguish from each other. Thanks for the tips.
Great vid. I never did all that but I always check for a clear barrel. After 1st shooting I take apart and lube. It`s always good to get a refresher course!
19:18 I think this handgun was designed with that trigger for a novice to be sure they are going to shoot someone before doing so. I can imagine a hair trigger on a new shooter in a situation it may or may not be needed may cause a premature discharge from adrenaline. Reminds of the trigger on the S&W SD9 VE (40 cal. as well) which has a trigger made for a novice and a self defense carry.
You are absolutely right John. The trigger on the SCCY isn't designed for shooting steel plates at 15 yards but it is an acceptable trigger when it comes to a small defensive pistol.
Great clip, thx for the advice here. I used a speed loader and loaded up each magazine 3-4 times to work the springs a bit. I have never taken apart a magazine and gave it a light lube, but may try that at some point ( when needed of course )
Great vid. I like how ya take the time to help new shooters and seasoned shooters as well. Always something new, better or different to learn watching you guys. Thanks for sharing.
All good advice and i hope people appreciate it. Also agree very much about separating ammo from the gun when working on it. Merry Christmas to you and family!
Thanks for this video! I definitely learned a few things that I will follow from now on. I appreciate it. *As mentioned before, I enjoy these types of instructional or informative videos. I would encourage you, to share or talk about anything that you like, it doesn't matter if you don't have time to shoot or the weather is bad. 👍 *Something I think is kind of funny/interesting to share: I have seen this "ballistol oil" come up recently while doing research. I haven't heard that name in a long time. I grew up on that stuff! In Germany 🇩🇪 it is known to be somewhat of a "wonder cure" for bruises and injuries. I'm not sure, but I think it was initially developed to lubricate machines in the meat and food industry (non toxic). Anyway, for sprained ankles, or knees or any type of injury that doesn't have a wound its a staple in many European medicine cabinets....as well as gun lubricant. 😀 😉
I have an LC9sPro and have about 400 rounds through it and can almost release the slide all the time with the thumb release without needing to pull it back a bit. After the first mag through at the range, then I can release it, but that first mag, it wont release without some help. It has a very good trigger, good feel on the reset, and two in the chest, one in the head at 7 yards within 2 seconds every time from the holster. Nice little CCW.
Your videos are great! Love how you use Star Trek's transporter sound in the intro of your videos! You should sell hats and shirts! Love how you teach beginners the basics of firearms! Thanks so much! From 🌞 and hot AZ! 🌵
Not a beginner by a long shot, but I'm glad to see you helping the horde of new shooters because you have expertise and experience far beyond average, and an excellent teaching style. Oh, one more thing: you might want to sell that hammer-fired SKYY and get their newest, striker-fired pistol. The trigger is reputed to be much better.
Great video and you can tell he is your son…exact same voice in “a little bit”…I thought it was dad speaking. I hope one day to have the same fun with my sons.
every new gun i get i put eezox on all the metal surfaces as an anti corrosive protective. go-juice oil for tight clock work enclosed parts. and go-grease for any friction surfaced like the slide where i want the grease to stay.
Great video. Only thing I would add is do not use an old washcloth for cleaning. All the sharp pieces on the gun tear fibers off the rag & hangup. Red shop towels or microfiber work well. For me anyways.
I also agree that an old washcloth shouldn't be used for cleaning guns. In this video I used a Birchwood Casey Gun & Reel Silicone Cloth and I highly recommend them.
@@mixup98 I use to have that cloth also but then grandkids came along that shoot. Things get borrowed but don't make it back. Lol. That's what grandparents are for. Teach & Share Program
@@mixup98 Guys from SCCY must have been listening. About 7:30 Eastern I got an email special. $50 rebate on red dot models & $25 rebate on regular thru Dec.
@@timrobinson6573 The good brand socks & t-shirts cut up work well on outside or to run thru barrels especially revolvers. Some of them do catch on parts inside magazine wells leaving pieces stuck in semi-autos. Not over thinking it just have had it happen. 😆 👍 Just wash socks first. Hoppes #9 & dirty socks are rough on sinuses.
If you don't want to chase springs or small spring-loaded parts all over, use a two and a half gallon Ziplock bag in which to disassemble and reassemble the small parts. There's plenty of room for most handguns/magazines. Wipe the excess lubricant off of the firearm/parts first, and the bag will last a long time. I haven't tried it with a rifle's action yet, but I've been told that you can put small slits in the edges of the bag to fit the rifle through until the action is inside the bag. A box of 12 bags costs around $5 at some grocery stores. If you have small hands or a small handgun, the 2-gallon bags are cheaper.
Nice video for new gun owners well thought out I looked at the SCCY and the Hellcat the Sig p365 the M&P shield and Glock 43x and the SCCY had the worst reviews for my pocket carry needs and overall feel and reviews I went with the P365 and I love it fits my needs perfectly I use a Desantis pocket holster I have been watching your videos for many years and I truly appreciate your knowledge and truthfulness I like the thumbs up or thumbs down plain and simple.
Great choice with the Sig P365, which is what I carry every time I leave the house. I will take a look at the DeSantis pocket holster, although I usually carry mine in an inside-the-pants kydex holster. Maybe this spring I will do an EDC video and show the firearms and holsters that I use. I want to thank you for the very nice comment and also for watching my videos for many years.
@@mixup98 I love the EDC video idea, thank you for sharing your knowledge, I love your videos, I’ve been watching ever since your video on the mossberg maverick 88
Great video! Lots of good information there! Galloway Precision makes a trigger kit for the Sccy. I have had real good results using their products. I'm a fan of that Sccy.
Thank you for an IMPORTANT video, useful even to "old-timer" shooters! A few years ago there was a RUclips cult of self-appointed young "experts" making videos, who invented the idea that any handgun should be good to go brand new right out of the box. They went directly to the range from the gun store, ignoring the manuals. They were OUTRAGED when any of those dry guns might falter in any way! They also felt that any handgun should shoot properly with ANY ammunition, no matter what weight or power or price (or even overall LENGTH), and no matter which discount megastore they chose their junk ammo from---and in SPITE OF whatever the manual said! Well, those ignorant fools are all gone now, because they did not make tons of money from RUclips when nobody subscribed to their channels But the old-timers who actually read the manuals are STILL making useful videos! By the way, my brand-new Sccy pistol had a VERY NICE trigger the first time that I fired it. I cheated and oiled the trigger and hammer linkage and sear parts first.............................elsullo
I saw the Lucas oil and had to watch! I use Hoppes #9 but i have some of that Lucas gun oil that my local Carquest sells. It's a little more viscous than Hoppes and I like it for slides and heavy friction areas.
Looks identical to my Keltec. There is an after market trigger for the Keltek that would probably work on the SCCY. I love mine, totally different gun. It's also adjustable.
Great information on prepping and breaking in any new firearm. Tetragun Grease is the first thing I ever bought. That and the blue Lucas oil are the only things I use on my pistols.
Great channel...thanks! Those Sccy mags are really rough metal on the feed lips. Sand and polish smooth for more reliable feeding. Check the spent casings you'll see...deep scratches... Also...if its not holding slide open after last round, your follower is not correct on the spring. Turn it around.
Ya, “she’s a GOODURN”! That’s what my “first wife told me” (yust kiddin’ of course!)! You’re the first guy I’ve ever seen “break in a magazine”! At 82, I’ve lubed my guns mostly for “LONG TERM STORAGE” over the years, mainly because I’ll probably not shoot them for a long time! A year or two! Looks like you’ve lubed this gun for mostly SHORT TERM! For LONG TERM, I’ll use Hoppe’s Gun Grease with WD-40 for moisture penetration, on a well saturated patch or mop, ESPECIALLY IN THE BORE!!! I do this especially on my black powder muzzleloaders! If I shot my guns FREQUENTLY, then a LIGHT coating of OIL would be enough. I guess I do have a tendency to “over lube” my guns to a fault! Like “flooding”???! No longer get to shoot since I lost my outdoor shooting range (need to find an affordable indoor range!). How I GREATLY admire your range (open range public?!). You used to use an old green Dodge pickup truck for a target. Did you ever give it a “WAX JOB”? A nice set of whitewalls would have been nice too! Thanks for the great enjoyment you give an “ol’ garfarfal” like me! “Ach du lieber, mein schatz”!!! Yes, “Gesundheit” & a very MERRY CHRISTMAS!
Timely video with so many new gun owners out there but I know many experienced shooters who do not clean or check firearms from the box and just assume they should be ready to go as-is. Invariably, they have problems with their guns in short order until they clean them, but more importantly, it can be a source of danger to send a bullet down a barrel that still has a glob of packing grease in it.
Great video again Mixup 😎👍 Excellent instructions for any newbies. Glad to see I've been doing it right instinctively 😁 All those years as a mechanic I guess.......
That is the most important thing with me is? The trigger pull! That puppy got to be sharp! Crispy and Smooth! If not? i'am taking it apart and make it that way! Not like a hair trigger! but with about 2 lb of trigger pull at the most >> 1 1/2 lb is best
Great video! One friendly suggestion: since this video is geared towards new gun owners, I think it would be beneficial to explain technical terms or firearms jargon, like “+ P” Thanks. Have a great Christmas season.
The SCCY is a very close copy of the Kel Tec P11 and the trigger pulls are similar except that my Kel Tec is almost 20 years old and has a butter smooth trigger pull.
Hey there: Just found your video on cleaning, lubricating, and breaking in both the SCCY CPX-2 pistol and, very importantly, the magazines. Many of the videos on SCCY CPX-2 having issues appear to actually be magazine related. I intend to move forward with purchasing a SCCY CPX-2, and I will follow your pistol and magazine break in advice. Many thanks for making this quality video.
Although not recommended quality magazines can be loaded for years and still operate properly. I tend to switch out my magazines every five or six months, sometimes longer.

I use old cotton socks. Don't over think it.
Great advice John. I also use a small magnetic tray (Harbor Freight) to hold small parts when I disassemble a firearm.
Wow. Great video. Never knew/ saw info on breaking in mags. Thank you!
Thanks for the info!
Great to see you doing videos like this along with all your other great stuff.
Thanks Bud....your feedback is greatly appreciated 👍
Great information on prepping and breaking in any new firearm. Tetragun Grease is the first thing I ever bought. That and the blue Lucas oil are the only things I use on my pistols.
Great minds think alike 👍👍
When I was new to shooting I ran everything right out the box. Now I disassemble and lube first. Thankfully I never had any issues.
Thank you for the video. I have heard they are nice firearms but not the best trigger.
Great tips
Lots of solid info. Thank you for posting.
You are very welcome and thank you for watching my video.
Thanks for the tips Brian!
My experience too.
@@mixup98 ☺👍
Great gun, reasonably priced.
I envy Mixup98 Jr. What a great mentor & teacher he has!
Great video, great mentor, thank you
Timely video with so many new gun owners out there but I know many experienced shooters who do not clean or check firearms from the box and just assume they should be ready to go as-is. Invariably, they have problems with their guns in short order until they clean them, but more importantly, it can be a source of danger to send a bullet down a barrel that still has a glob of packing grease in it.
Very informative. lover your video. Thanks!!
You are so welcome!
Great video again Mixup 😎👍
Excellent instructions for any newbies.
You mentioned the Sky trigger. How similar is the gun to take Kel TEC P11? Good info on the magazine.
I was gonna skip through but after that intro I will start from the beginning!
I just picked up a SCCY DVG 9mm. The inside of the magazines were dirty as I find on some newly purchased firearms.
How long do you leave your magazines loaded ???
Although not recommended quality magazines can be loaded for years and still operate properly. I tend to switch out my magazines every five or six months, sometimes longer.
Lucas gun oil and Tetra gun grease are exactly what I use, good stuff, that Tetra grease makes my Ruger sr1911 slide work smooth as butter.
Awsome educational video! I’m getting a P320 soon
In general. Dry firing is bad for anything that fires. Bows, air guns etc. Use snap caps to prevent metal on metal impact.
