I hope the entities have as much realism as the environment. Nothing kills the immersion in these games more than when enemy entities just have that rubber, overly shiny, cartoonish look to them when the engine is rendering the environment almost like real life.

They're shown in the trailer.
i hope they don't focus too much on the entities if at all, but rather focus first and foremost on the environment and atmosphere. that's what makes a game about liminal spaces about liminal spaces :)

Almost.
Sure...if you're three feet tall. All the door handles were at eye level.
I know this might sound really silly, but I hope there might be a "peaceful" game mode so I can just wander around these stunning areas and move at my own pace in VR. I would love to enjoy the surreal aspect of the backrooms, without my psychosis getting triggered by something chasing me! 😢

@@theeredshadow6031 if it did it would be pushed back by like a year
If it was done well, varied enough and not trying to show you everything as quickly as possible, I could get lost in that forever. It would be sick if someone could make something like that IRL, I think it would be a hit. Maybe take an abandoned office building to make it large enough for repeat visits and rearrange/add new things every so often.

A lot more than that changes whenever they turn away from the room ;)
This looks really cool! The only thing is, I would love if there were a jumpscare free setting - I love these liminal space type games, but it's rare to find ones that focus entirely on the atmosphere without having jumpscares. I would love a liminal spaces game where you wander environments like this with a sense of unease and otherworldly-ness combined with nostalgia, but without something popping out at you or worrying about dying from a monster.
I think u right but not too many skrimers, moderately - here is ideal in my opinion
The problem with a game like that, though, is where is the threat or sense of urgency? Is there level progression instead? Do you need to solve a mystery or solve puzzles? Where is the "game" part of the game? Otherwise, it's just a walking simulator.
The Complex is a really good backrooms game with no monsters. It's free on steam there's a second called 'The Complex Expedition' that cost money but has more content, I think it's worth it.
I would like that too but to me, it would turn it to the feeling of walking in an empty FPS multiplayer map. First chills, then boredom

monsters destroy liminality. there, I said it. The real horror of liminality is not knowing if you're really alone. knowing there's another entity is a completely different side of horror, destroying the idea of liminality
They had to show not one but two monsters. I feel like mainstream audiences just can't grasp the horror without some "creepy" monster running around all the time.
if the game has no monsters, you'd know just like you now know it does, no threat at all = no fear
@@Medieval_Productions nah you dont understand bruh the fear of not knowing if your alone could have fit in this game
@@joshuamf5985 But you do know. If the game has no monsters, you will know that the game has no monsters, and it will not be scary. Also, regarding OP directly, liminality has nothing to do with monsters because to begin with it has nothing to do with Horror. It's just that it has been used in Horror frequently in the past few years.
I agree, it's the same effect as when I was a kid and hunting for Bigfoot in San Andreas, I always psyched myself out thinking he could pop out at any moment, in reality they were just mods and I would never actually find him. Same idea with Herobrine.
Please don’t rush this game out, make it the best, most thrilling and mind bending experience possible and the good reviews will get you the sales you deserve, if it’s VR too then a bonus! But if it has this fidelity and immersion and back rooms feel to it, it’ll do very well!
I have game dev experience and vr is incredibly difficult to implement well so dont get your hopes up lol

Agreed, I'm loving the rise in games like this. Hopefully it doesn't become the norm but I definitely would love to see more of this.
Theyre most common made using LiDAR 3d scanning so most of the textures and environments actually are real places that are being project in CG software.
@@JustapErson I personally wouldn’t mind if this became the norm for a while, i feel like now a days most horror games are trying way to hard to be like FNAF, or Outlast, to much occult stuff or stuffing kids or people into something. I just want some genuine scares that look a little too real, kinda like that P.T game a few years back (this also is giving me very backrooms vibes and alot of them never really meet up to the level i want which is so this game)
Well put together trailer, impressive with the vfx and execution 👌
So excited to try this!
The analog horror elements mixed with the super realistic graphics and liminal space feel is a really cool combination, I hope there is more instruction tape/found footage material in the game itself, I'm really excited for this it looks great
Probably more digital horror
This looks a little more surreal in the style of horror than found tapes. If you rewatch the opening in game stuff, the objects move around the room when the character looks away but it’s subtle enough that it’s hard to even notice.

True horror of the backrooms themselves without a need to rely on cheap jump scares. The developers of this game are master artists in their own right. They truly capture what the subliminal space is all about.
This is what Phasmophobia needs imo

"oh no an empty room I'm so terrified"
where did civilization go wrong, I wonder
There might be something wrong with your brain then. The fear of places that feel "off" is shared by the vast majority of people. If you want to analyse deeper, that "off" feeling likely comes from the fact that we are social beings and being lost on your own often means death for you. The primary aspect of liminal spaces is that they are transitional, they aren't places you would typically linger. Being stuck in such a reality bending place without any other life around you is the part that's scary. It's like being condemned in limbo. If you were trapped in a maze of endless rooms and strange architecture, the fear and panic would drive you to madness. By all logic, it should frighten you, so if it doesn't, then maybe you lack imagination. @@isodoublet

The PSA at the beginning is my type of horror. I love fake vintage PSAs, because they feel so real, the quality of the video makes like it could have actually existed in the real world, and I just, didn't know about it, and the way the video distorts more and more as it gets closer to the end is just... perfect. 👌

Heh. The PSA reminded me of the local ad voice-over in this recent short by Michael Spicer: ruclips.net/video/cN99iiKl8Lo/видео.htmlsi=MR_v45pCxfxUKqzu. More comedy than horror, watching it on RUclips, but just imagine staying at a local motel in a remote village and catching that on the TV at 2 a.m.

first person is now called realistic approach? huh
@@petrkdn8224 he meant the graphics not the first person view
@hellamachines textures and model quality has always been good, the only "new" thing is actual attempt at colour correction.
I play with nvidia filters on most games where I fix all games oversaturation, and they always look super realistic like Unrecord.
All games nowadays have way too much contrast and just look bad. Unrecord and this game isn't anything new really, it's just putting more than 1 braincell into colour correction
@@petrkdn8224 laughed a lot, thanks
@@petrkdn8224 Most games aren't trying to be super-realistic, and it would be to the detriment of most games's art styles to attempt such. A bit of stylization is integral to making a game stand out and age better. Games have the benefit of not being real life, so they can take creative liberties with things such as lighting and color balance to better suit the tone of the scene (and more importantly, the gameplay).
I personally don't see the appeal in hyper-realism in games; it's a novelty at best. I want graphics to look interesting and memorable, not realistic. Why have graphics comparable to real life when you can have graphics more interesting than real life? The limits to graphics in real life are defined by the laws of physics, but the limit of graphics of games are only restrained by how creatively you can manipulate the output of the GPU. There's a reason Borderlands and Wind Waker settled on the art styles they did; a interesting art style is memorable, but a realistic art style is forgettable (anyone remember Black?).
1:07 shook me… I thought for sure it had to be a cutscene filmed in real life, or something. This looks absolutely spectacular.
The fucking shoe is what gets me. That 1 detail convinced me it was real.
The anti-aliasing issue across the edges of the table made me realize that it was gameplay, but the rest of the shots inside that room had no issues at all. If you were to screenshot that moment before and after the light switch, I'd have no idea if it was real life or videogame at first glance.

I feel like you kinda have to assume you're not alone. I mean, imagine a horror game comes out, it is all creepy and atmospheric build up, then just kinda ends when you finish exploring. Were literally just alone the whole time.
yes, super realistic graphics and then it seems the classic game where you escape from an enemy, it had me at first but lose me halfway
i dont know what some of these other replies are smoking, but having/showing a monster is such low-hanging fruit these days. this beauty of a game better have a 'turn off silly-looking, long-legged, toothy monster intended to scare 9 year olds' feature.
oh my god this looks incredible
Should be releasing soon! so excited!!!!!
i wanna see if these graphics are actually good
They are
I played the alpha. I can confirm they look this good
I've played similar backrooms games that look like this, although they have all been short. I do not doubt the graphics, I'm just worried about potential bugs
@@zathius1021 we have been bug testing for months. Haven’t ran into much at all
@@kyleward1588could normal gaming pcs run it? or do you have to have a godly gaming pc
omg this looks phenomenal! the amount of work that must have been put into this!! i love analog horror and the backrooms, i feel like they are such a unique horror genre, and some of the few things that genuinely creep me out. I cant wait!!
this is gonna be sick
that was a masterpiece
This looks so good, I’m hoping the full game will be the same
I wonder if there could be a "No Monsters" mode. I get that some people want a "playable SCP Foundation"-type thrill wide, but some of use just want to drink in the vibes of uncanny spaces. We don't need to be chased by a bogeyman to make a game like this meaningful.
"I want a walking simulator"
@@supertigerroadtrip5193Hey! It's not just walking! It's like walking in an M.C. Escher painting! There's a difference!
@@supertigerroadtrip5193 I prefer that then just a scary monster
@@supertigerroadtrip5193 Yes. I used to just fly around Second Life and see what people had built. It was fun.
this. is. beautiful. 😢
