OBI-WAN KENOBI EPISODE 3 BREAKDOWN VADER

  • kenobi is once again reaching out to qui gon jinn, his old master. I guess in these 10 years he hasn’t been able to reach him. Yoda’s training hasn’t gone too well I guess.
as he hears voices of the past, like yoda telling him only pain will you find, qui gon’s plea to train anakin, reverberations of anakin on mustafaor, we see Vader being put together, really connecting the fact that anakin and vader are now the same person physically. obi wan can feel vader, and tells quigon that he is coming.
As Vader walks out of his chamber, which looks lke the same one from Rogue One, we get a beautiful shot of mustafar and his castle. For those new to star wars, this is the same place where he fought obi-wan and lost, burning alive. This is also where in the comics, he opened a portal beneath his castle to bring back his dead wife padme, which of course didn’t work as planned. check out the marvel darth vader comics and darth momin for more about that.
Vader sits atop his obsidian throne, as he orders Reva around. Where is he, he says, and we hear this is james earl jones iconic voice. I feel it could be perfected with some audio engineering like how luke skywalker’s voice was made in the mandalorian, being completely computer generated.
He tells her that kenobi is all that matters, not the grand inquisitor. She clearly has lied and told Vader that Kenobi killed the GI, to which of course Vader will realize that this is impossible once he fights Kenobi and sees he’s pathetic.
He explains he knows what she wants, to be the grand inquisitor. If she brings him Kenobi, he will award her the promotion. If she fails, he’ll terminate her. So Vader has definitely given the go ahead to the Empire to track Kenobi down, and notify him once they have him in near sight. Vader ends communication and gets up like a robot, his lightsaber hanging from his belt, emitter side up, just like the original trilogy.
As They land on Mapuzo, a mining system, we see a lifter droid and an R5 unit. R5 was the droid in a new hope that had the bad motivator, which was replaced by R2D2 to Luke Skywalker and Uncle Owen. This isn’t the same R5 unit, just a R5 unit.
As Obi-Wan looks out in to the distance, he sees dark side Anakin in his jedi robes. this is the first time we see Anakin played by hayden christensen in anything since revenge of the sith. I had to do a double take, I couldn’t believe it was him.
They enter a room that many Jedi have been in, this is a safe house, called the path. It all leads to Jabim, where they give the force sensitives captured by the empire, new identities and free them. As Leia asks what happens to them, it’s revealed no one ever sees them again. So I can say what happens to the is that the empire takes them in, and tries to convert them to the dark side. As Kenobi reveals carving on the walls from Quinlan Voss. This is amazing. We haven’t heard of Quinlan in forever, no one knew if he lived or died from Order 66. Quinlan was a powerful Jedi during the clone wars, he helped obi-wan on many missions and had a unique ability shared with Cal Kestis called psychometry.
I think this is Hayden in the suit.
Kenobi runs away, and he’s stopped to see Vader infront of him. Igniting his crimson red lightsaber. Obi-Wan wants no part of this and runs away. Finally igniting his saber as Vader tells him he can’t hide forever.
We get the best line where Kenobi says what have you become?
Vader puases and says I am what you made me.
They fight and it doesn’t look good for Kenobi at all, Vader overpowers him and he’s literally toying with him. 10 years have led to this moment, where Vader wants KEnobi to suffer. He’s also extremely cautious, as in this 10 years he’s had time to reflect on everything, and realizes his loss could have been avoided had he not been so arrogant and quick to make decisions. Rageful Vader is learning about Kenobi, he’s more tactful, more experienced, and more patient, waiting for the right time to unleash.
    Reva finds the safe house.
Vader lifts Kenobi with the dark side of the force, choking him, spilling flammable material, as Obi-Wan drops his lightsaber.
Igniting the substance, Vader throws Obi-Wan into the fire, dragging him with the force, paying him back to how Obi-Wan left him on mustafar, burning alive. Telling him this is only the beginning for the pain he’s about to feel.
Vader clearly wants Obi-Wan to die very slowly, only after suffering to Vader’s enjoyment. That’s why he didn’t go all out, he’s savouring the moment. Playing with his food before he eats. As Storm troopers come, Vader orders them to bring him, when one is shot by the lady helping obi-wan, and she explodes a cannister into massive flames. Vader watches Kenobi being picked up by the loader droid who i think is wrecker or Rex, and we see the flames in his lenses. Symbolizing his rage and his past with obi-wan, the fires that turned him into who he is today.

She was obviously in disguise. It doesn't make sense that she just left the empire minutes ago and decided to help a jedi. She obviously talked about the past when she said that she used to work for the empire but then left because she was not fighting for the right side. Her having worked for the empire gave her the opportunity to pose as an officer.
You really don't believe that she just decided out of the blue to help them and lead them to a SECRET hideout from the rebels that she shouldn't even know, right?

      1. Why no Imperial March theme in the entire episode?? That woulda helped make Vader feel so much more authentic.

Because that Obi-Wan is a wiser Obi-Wan, at that point he has let go of the trauma of the Clone Wars and he is no longer as confused, depressed and hopeless as he is in this show, only time teaches us to let go of some things, plus he completed his mission to bring Luke down the path of the Jedi, he could finally find his peace and so he did.

Well anyone would be scared if they haven't been with the force for 10+ years. Vadar was actually training, hunting down thousands of Jedi during the 10 years, so Vadar's skills and power would make Jedi, even Yoda if he was there be scared shitless if they haven't been with the force in 10 years.
This is why in my Theory Obi Won will get his powers back and actually beat Vadar, and if he does in fact beat Vadar, it will also make him at more ease knowing that if he can still beat him until Luke is ready to go on the Jedi path.

At first, I thought it was weird that Vader just didn't douse the flames at first either, but looking back, he didn't seem surprised when the lady shot the stormtrooper, usually when Vader is surprised he does that little head snap. I think Vader let Obi-Wan go on purpose, to prolong the chase, and to prolong Obi-Wan's suffering. The chase is apart of Obi-Wan's suffering, because if he just caught Obi-Wan, yeah he can torture him, but the chase is done. The chase is a huge part of torture, the stress, the phycological dread of being caught. Vader knows exactly what he's doing, and wants to make Obi-Wan suffer in every way, physically and mentally. He may even plan on following Kenobi to track down Kenobi's friends, as you speculated, he may want to kill them in front of him. I believe Vader let Obi-Wan go on purpose, all for the sake of prolonging his suffering.

We all know a couple things:
    1. Overall this series has an opportunity to set-up the New Hope encounter between the two in a very awesome way. This could be done well, or leave a lot of plot holes. We're all hoping for the former.
    2. Obi-wan will do something in combat or otherwise to make Vader feel as though he is still "just a learner". Or otherwise that line when they "meet again at last" about being just a learner "now I am the master" will also make no sense.
    3. This series needs to end with Vader thinking Obi-wan is dead. Otherwise he'll keep hunting for him and that wouldn't align with A New Hope. I fully expect a final fight in which Obi-wan fakes out Vader/Anakin and tricks him into thinking he's dead. Hopefully it's something that makes Vader feel almost fearful of Obi-wan, as was later articulated in additional material after Vader killed Obi-wan and he disappeared (which apparently freaked out Vader). The fact that Vader steps on his cloak in a New Hope could be connected back to what they decide to do here at the end of this series. Especially if Obi-wan performs a "disappearing act" in this series at the end, that would make the moment in A New Hope even more thoughtful - in that Vader is wondering now for a second time.... IS HE REALLY DEAD THIS TIME??? I say book it. This will be connected somehow.

      1. Why no Imperial March theme in the entire episode?? That woulda helped make Vader feel so much more authentic.
      2. IMO Vader would’ve either captured or killed obi wan after seeing him for the first time in 10 years. It’s just not a Vader thing to do, to let a robot and a random girl to take obi wan to safety. I know they can’t kill obi wan or maybe even capture bc that would hurt the canon timeline but they coulda definitely thought of something better.
      3. Whole fight scene felt kinda off, don’t get me wrong the fire scene was badass but the fight scene felt fan made
      4. They kept cutting the Vader vs Obi Wan fight scene like every 20seconds to Reva and other plots which I didn’t like. Should have had one long fight scene to build more fear and realism.
      5. It’s like Disney is purposely trying to just barely hit the decent/okay bar on this show. Almost as if there tryna make the show as “okay” as possible. The scene where obi wan is shooting 3 bounty hunters and then just ends up on the floor with leia?? Vader and stormtroopers can’t walk around a 20 feet fire?? LAZY WRITING

Whether that’s to track him and kill the others with him, to continue to toy with him and keep him in fear, he was unsatisfied with the duel and how easy it was to beat Obi-Wan, or some combination of those. We all know he could have easily killed them all there. He was clearly easily overpowering Kenobi, they had just shown him using the force to put out a fire, and the way they framed it so you could see him watching them help him.

I thought it was heavily implied that Vader allowed him to go, whether that be for the thrill of the hunt, waiting for Obi wan to recoup for a proper and more satisfying fight or simply to see if he gets lead to others. For whatever reason it seemed obvious and Vader realized quickly he was far superior as evidenced by his dialogue. He had several chances to strike and kill him but seemed to be playing with him. Exactly how I felt but I liked the episode far more than most people who were disappointed and I love the series so far I'm content overall. EPISODE 3 WAS DOPE 👊. Crazy thing is Vader's much stronger now than he was as Anakin Skywalker before he ever reached his potential in The Force. His pain and suffering from his burnt skin, missing limbs and lungs makes him stronger in The Dark Side. James Earl Jones voicing Darth Vader with Hayden Christensen's acting ONSCREEN was EPIC ASFLIP 👊❤️. EWAN MCGREGOR KILLED IT. His Obi Wan being rusty because of a decade of a sedentary and out of practice lifestyle as a Jedi not utilizing his Force abilities made it a completely unfair fight against Vader who's now much stronger in The Dark Side. I like Friend as The Grand Inquisitor but Moses Ingram as Reva is still pretty good despite her character being annoying because she's supposed to be written that way. It's pretty sweet so far the first two episodes are pretty good and I love how Obi Wan Kenobi is shown being depressed since Order 66 wiped out the majority of Jedi in The Jedi Temple. I just hate how Star Wars fans ruin enjoying anything related to Star wars. NOBODY HATES STAR WARS MORE THAN STAR WARS FANS. I don't understand why so called Star Wars fans who are really purists go about saying racist and bigoted things to Star Wars actors and actresses like Moses Ingram the same way they have done towards Hayden Christensen's acting as Anakin Skywalker and Kelly Marie Tran as Rose Tico.

So many people are misunderstanding the fire scene. You clearly see Vader staring at Kenobi getting dragged away for a good 4 or 5 seconds before he purposefully turns away and leaves. He ponders on the moment and then lets him escape. This could be because he is conflicted, which the showrunner and Hayden have both said we'll get during the show, or maybe he intends to follow Kenobi to more Jedi/rebels and kill them as a way to further punish Kenobi, as he now realises that Kenobi is being helped. He isn't scared of the fire and it isn't stopping him. They literally establish a few seconds earlier that he can blow a path through the flame with the force if he so chooses. *The point is that he chooses not to.*
I'm actually blown away that so many people are calling it plot holes or bad writing. Then again, Star Wars fans seem to nitpick even the tiniest of details, making mountains out of mole hills. Couple that with the separate outrage farming crowd who hate absolutely anything with disney, diversity or "wahmen" and then you have two pretty vocal groups hating on it.

There’s no taking of responsibility there, he’s just pushing all of the blame off onto the Jedi and Obi Wan and Yoda, etc. That’s ok (as far as the story is concerned), there are absolutely individuals like that in real life, and there’s a lot to like about Anakin/Vader’s story arc, but I don’t feel like the Jedi “failed” him. They were far from perfect and made plenty of mistakes, as human (or humanoid, in this galaxy) beings tend to do, but he failed himself at least as much as they failed him, and if we’re honest, he failed himself far more than they ever did.

This confirmed my description of the Empire on your video about the unfortunate Moses situation. That it’s just a ladder for social climbers who are always gunning for the top spot. The Inquisitors fighting for the top spot feels like the infighting and bickering that I know eventually brought down the Empire, both in Canon and Legends.
Also pretty cool to see the stuff with Obi-wan and Leia. It also gives us one of the best and most relatable descriptions of the Force, ever. We never will know what the Force will actually feel like, but the description of the Force by Obi-wan is so understandable.
And then there’s everything in this episode with Vader. Never have I ever felt so scared of Vader, even in Rogue One, Jedi: Fallen Order, and even Empire Strikes Back. It’s probably going to be the best depiction, and the one to beat, of Vader for a long time.

Personally I believe when it comes to obi-wan's escape, Vader let him escape. I propose this because just as discussed in this video Vader could have walked through the fire, put it out, or he could of snatched Kenobi from the loader bot. Vader was literally dragging Kenobi through it not even a few moments earlier so it wouldn't be hard to just do it again. Now why do I think Vader let him leave? Mainly because Kenobi was so submissive and unwilling to fight. I would imagine from Vader's standpoint he's been building this up and reflecting on their last duel for so long that this too anticlimactic for his taste. Especially seeing he's fought many other Jedi whom have shown him so much more fight than Kenobi did. So in conclusion Vader let Kenobi get away due to their anti climactic encounter in hopes that they would have a proper duel upon their next meeting. Especially since the ending of the episode suggests Reva got her hands on Leia, which would give much more motivation for Kenobi to both show up and duel him.

Also he didn’t start killing the civilians because he had a psychotic episode, but because he sensed Obi-wan and wanted to bait him out. Killing instantly isn't as satisfying a revenge as torturing and then releasing them so that you plant the seed of fear that festers and continues to torture them even after you've stopped, and then slowly chasing them down to continue to stoke the flame of terror. Vader even more-or-less directly says this to Obi-wan.
If Obi-wan was in his prime Vader wouldn't be able to do this, he'd have to fight him the with intention of killing him, otherwise he might be the one who dies. But at this moment Vader has an overwhelming advantage due to Obi-wan's PTSD and going ten years without fighting or practicing, so Vader has the luxury to slowly torture him.

I think people are missing what is happening when they say he is letting him go or he was afraid of the fire. Anakin was alone to suffer and burn in torture. Meanwhile Obi Wan has others to help him still. Even Padme, Anakin's lover and reason for his turn to the dark side, had supposedly turned against him (or so he thought); also because of Obi Wan. Maybe he is in shock, jealous, or depressed in that he was abandoned to only some Sith lord that sought to enslave him while Obi Wan is saved by strangers at their own risk.

We’re not used to Vader “taking a moment.” This is not the Obi-Wan he thought he was going to find. Some might find it out of character. Vader doesn’t usually have a connection with his victims like he does Obi-Wan. We’re used to seeing him obliterate his enemies without a second thought. And yes, he’s toying with Obi-Wan and prolonging his suffering, but it’s also giving a clear view of the shell of a man his former master/brother is now.

There wouldn't be any stakes involved if he was still the quipping badass Jedi Master he'd been during the Clone Wars.
I know a lot of people are comparing this portayal of Obi-wan to Luke in the Last Jedi but I don't think that's a fair comparison. I think having a moment of weakness and almost killing someone you love would be traumatic but it didn't feel right that Luke would give up on everything because of that alone. Obi-wan though has been through some stuff. It does feel right that after Order 66, supposedly killing his best friend and losing his entire way of life that he would all but give up on everything.
I think a fairer comparison would be Luke at the end of the Empire Strikes Back. Our hero has had his ass kicked and the rug pulled out from under him. The only real difference is that Obi-wan has been left in that state for a decade. Luke didn't have the time between Empire and Jedi to wallow.

This episode was amazing. Peak Vader. I don’t mind how he let Ben escape at the end. He basically was toying with him and I believe Vader expected Kenobi to be much stronger.

I still think there’s turmoil inside him that always holds him back against Obi wan just because of the past history. Anyone else and it would have ended differently

7.8/10… My problems with this episode

      I think he just thought:
“No, not like this, this is pathetic, i want to break Kenobi, but i can’t do that if he’s already a broken man, i will wait until he’s at his highest to bring him to his lowest”

I think that Vader knows that Riva "killed" the grand Inquisitor. There is no way that the Version of Obi-wan, Vader encountered, was able to kill the grand Inquisitor. And Vader should be able to put that together.

I think he already knew before the fight, in the scene where he talks with Reva. He interrupts her just as she was trying to tell a lie about how Kenobi killed the Inquisitor, saying, in a way, something like “oh shut up, i don’t care who or what killed the G. inquisitor, Kenobi is all that matters”

I'm sure he knows the GI is still alive and is holding the GI position over Revas head so she will lead him to Obi Wan. He knows she killed the GI but still has a use for her and once she becomes useless to him he will kill her.

After rewatching, I think what’s being missed in this whole fire scene is that Vader had just asked the troopers to bring obi wan to him. Even until the last moment of that scene the troopers were firing at the droid and could have captured him. It’s not exactly like he gave up. But considering people were crawling out to help him, perhaps Vader was unsure if others would follow and didn’t want to fall into any traps especially as the last time obi was on the other side of fire it didn’t go well. This time he “didn’t jump” literally or metaphorically

I really didn’t like the whole chase scene and I’m very forgiving it could of been done a lot better obi wan should of just confronted vader in the streets and just lost because of his fear and was saved in a more convincing way and leia should of got away so she can be taken out of the show because I think we’ve seen enough of her but the whole chase just was so immersion breaking

I like the idea that he is incredibly disappointed by Obi-wan.
That he yearned for a showdown with his former master where he proved beyond a shadow of a doubt he was superior.
Then he finds this broken down shell of what Obi-wan once was, and his hopes are squashed.
Maybe he's hoping Obi-wan has time to regroup and rally his strength once more. Vader might be looking for a more satisfying fight with Kenobi.
