  • The heat is on, can we crack 3 hours and book ourselves a spot on the London Marathon 2024?
I ran for the Alzheimer's Society.
Any donations would be greatly appreciated.

Hi did my first marathon at Richmond. I'm 60 years old finished at4 28. Told to walk last 1mile as the paramedics could not cope with the people suffering with the heat . It was a bit hot!

Getting some very very warm memories watching this. It was my first marathon and came in ~4.31, completely died after about 16 miles as did a lot of people. At least i managed my first half in 1.59. Ended up talking to the 4.15 pacer for a bit, he said it was the hardest marathon he haf ever done, and that the 4hr pacer had completely pulled out after going off way too fast.

What a day it was indeed - I'm actually a lot more proud of my effort after only bettering my time by 17mins at Brighton!
I was very close to wondering left at the half marathon turn sign, very glad I didn't!

Congrats on finishing! Tough day! I decided to pace goal+15min, 3h30. It was still very difficult but just missed it, and glad I didn't end up in one of those ambulances. The worst was the extra 2 mile walk back to the car 🥴

Thanks mate! I should have followed your plan and adjusted for the heat but was too stubborn. At least I can now be 100% sure that I can't run anywhere near my optimum speeds in hot conditions like a few crazy people can! Well done for getting close to your adjusted goal time!

Still get PTSD from this race everytime I hear "Richmond", "Thames Path" and "Kew Gardens".

Thanks for this video. I ran this race as well, was absolutely brutal. I was targeting 3.45, ended up coming in 4.25. I really enjoyed that challenge though.

Well done mate. You cannot predict the effects of the heat besides it will get you. And it is a rather nice but narrow course. Vs london marathon.... That is something else. Good effort. And yes... I hate when my battery drains bc im recording my hand or pocket lol

I don't know what it is with some pacers trying to bank time in the beginning, it never works.
Maybe their idea was to beat the heat but you gotta think about the people who run with you, for most runners the time you are pacing is a PB.
On my local course the first half is all uphill, it's totally pointless to follow the pacers. They either try to bank time in the beginning or run right on pace through the uphill. But all you really have to do is be patient in the beginning and then you fly once you start going downhill.
I prefer to use PacePro on my Garmin if I have the GPX of the course. At least I know exactly what will happen.

Yeah, I'm gonna try and use PacePro for Hastings Half this weekend - very hilly course!

Aside from the heat, would you recommend this? I'm about a 3:50 marathoner. The route looks pleasant but iIt didn't look like there were very many marshalls and you were on your own a bit. Is it possible to go the wrong way?

Hey! It was a lovely route, particularly the 10K in Kew Gardens. There was a 10K on the day before I may do instead
      next time.
There was only 1 point I remember where I was slightly unsure where to go at about 35KM, but that was probably more from dehydration and most places were well marshalled.
I did run by myself a lot but I think in more typical September conditions I would have been with a decent pack for a long while. There must have been 50 or so people at first with the sub-3 hour pacer. (Plenty of other pacers down to 5 hour 30) I think the heat affected everyone so differently, causing the field to spread out very quickly.

That was my first marathon - it was so hot - I came in at 4:39, which given the heat wasn't bad. There were a couple of points where I wasn't sure of the route - they could have done with more marshals, as you say.
