  • On a very special Cannon Fodder...Troy and Joe discuss a very special episode of the GCP: Missing Moments! How did the ep come together from top to bottom? And was it just a bit too much drama for one episode? The guys break it all down before grappling with the reality of how close the team came to a TPK in Episode 35 and what would have happened to the Gatewalkers story if that reality came to pass.

    Troy is also an incredibly generous person. In 2021 he, along with members of the cast and members of the Naisch donated a substantial amount of money to pay for a lifesaving surgery for my wife. It was successful and I will never forget what this community did for my family. Thank you Troy!

    it took 5/6 months for Troy to go from "I wanna make this year about community & engagement with the community" to "I wanna make this year about being a CEO and growth for the company" ...
    Edit: also thank you Joe for being a real one. you are almost always the voice of reason in these FODs and I love that you make hard statements that often go 180 against what Troy says. love you for that.

      It took him 5-6months to say it in a cannon fodder but if you were a true fan you'd know that 1- Troy has always wanted to be successful in creating an artistic career for himself and being a successful CEO of GCN is how you do that. And 2- Troy being successful is the only way to continue and insure the unbelievably great things he's done for himself, all the staff at gc and most importantly us the fans of the show.
      People hate success when it's not their own and find it really easy to trash talk them.
      Good on him for being a monster and going after it and most importantly ignoring all the noise in the comments

    As a GM of Pathfinder and many other games for over 45 years, I'd just like to say that Troy is one of the three best GMs I've ever had the pleasure of seeing run a game, and two of those are people I've played with personally. I don't always agree with his rulings, but I absolutely respect his right to make his own decisions for his games, which is absolutely his right as the GM, and that's a hill I'll die on. Even having over four decades of personal experience as a GM, I've learned some great lessons from how Troy runs his games, and he puts so many Pro GMs to shame with his integrity in staying true to himself and not pandering to his audience. The GCN has some of the greatest GMs in online actual plays, and Troy is the top of that pyramid. From the early days of Giantslayer to TFC and Gatewalkers and beyond, I look forward to every minute of his games and my wife, who is very hard to please as a player and viewer, has become hooked to his games as well, and that's the greatest praise I can give to any streaming GM.

    Ambition is not the same thing as Ego; you can be ambitious with a sense of collaboration and cooperation without thinking “I’m hot shit, I’m almost always right.” You can affect change in the world without becoming an egotist.
    Can you affect change with a massive ego? Sure. Can you cure an infected limb with an amputation? Sure. Is that the best, most effective way to accomplish that goal? Not at all.

    You guys keep doing what you do. My own group has plenty of times we yell at each other and disagree. But in the end we end up having a great time. Troy. You are a very upfront person and don’t dance around what you want to say. Do I always agree? No. But listening to you is never not fun. And at the end of the day, if you and your players are having fun then keep doing it. The thing that brought me to you guys is the fact that you are showing how things really are around the game table. So many other actual plays are so unbelievably sanitized that they feel almost scripted. The Glass Cannon has always showed it all warts and all. But that is what makes the comedy land even harder. Not everyone is here to hate. Some of us are just enjoying the content and not making a loud noises about it online. Keep on keeping on.

    I think entire roleplay episodes are often considered the best even though it doesn't push the story forward, because the characters are the main characters. And givng them time to breath and interact is, in my opinion, more important that the story itself (especially if it is a show like Glass Cannon). It's also nice for the GM to be able to sit back and just give the floor to the players, and it's less work!

    • @austinemmer5339
      @austinemmer5339 Месяц назад +3

      Respectfully I feel the opposite. I think I play the game for action and like glimpses of character and development. Maybe 75-25 in favor of combat and fast-paced technical play. Characters need to breathe and grow but I'm here for the brawls.
      I play with several people who just want to RP. I think that people like that (maybe like you?) make me a better gamer by forcing me out of my comfort zone and into character. Otherwise I'd just be playing chess with extra steps.
      I still say it's not my place of comfort or style or where I am happiest. But I appreciate the RPers out there and variety is the spice of life.
      Glad this ep made folks like you happy. I can't wait till they go back and figure out how to cook the escargot!

    Y'all are one of the few major RPG companies to delve into the business side, process, rules mistakes, thoughts on topics, worts and all with open honesty. Troy both rocks and can on occasion be difficult, like the rest of us without public personas. He's doing it where everyone can comment and wisely moves that to the background. Best wishes to The GCN cast and crew!

    I wrote the following on a reddit post asking for your favorite Troy moment. I know that the internet in general is a shit hole full of shit stains, but I want you Troy, Joe, and the rest of the GCP to know that those voices ARE in the minority. I vote with my views, with my dollar, and my word of mouth. But as someone who was a content creator for a year myself, I understand how demoralizing it is, I understand how depressing it is, and so here's my attempt to vote with a comment as well....
    Troy is a huge inspiration as a GM, so it's hard to choose just the one moment. I love all of his A&A bits (Mama Fats, Glip-glorp, Tumsy), I love his Col Luther character in RotLC, and so so many amazing moments in the GCP Live game. I love how he sets the tone, how he can effortlessly go from silly to serious and terrifying. I love how he can plan ahead and sew the seeds for plot elements that don't come to fruition for sometimes YEARS. I love how he can constantly, seemingly effortlessly, pick a banter topic every episode that sparks interesting and funny conversations. I love how he can run a podcast, and still somehow keep his friends together at the same time. And I love how he can keep an audience and all his players engaged the whole way through, through nearly 10 years of many of these amazing moments.
    But if I had to pick just one moment, I'd probably pick perhaps the most innocuous moment, but it's a big one for me. It's the oft- forgotten pathfinder 2e playtest introduction, episode 1.
    I was just a newbie only starting to get into the hobby and had been playing for a year at that point. I was chosen from my group to GM next and they suggested I try out the new pf2e playtest as we were ending our pf1e campaign and transitioning into sf1e before moving on to pf2e on the full release. But we also knew we would have time to kill in between, so here I was, just a newbie GM not knowing how to run the game at all. I knew I wanted something that matched my energy and I often learn by example, so I went to RUclips, typed in "doomsday dawn playthrough" and the very first video seemed fun enough so I clicked it. Troy's very first words EXPLODED into my ears...
    "What is going on EVERY-BODY!" [Followed immediately by Joe laughing]
    I was literally hooked from the word go. We laughed, we learned, and I saw for the first time what kind of GM I wanted to be. I copied his style until it became my own. I eventually did run Doomsdawn Dawn for my buddies but, unsurprisingly, I wasn't very good, but I was better (so they say) than their first time GMing, so I attribute that to Troy.
    ~~~~
    Dear Troy,
    If you ever read this, or have someone on your social media team read this to you, just know you literally inspired me to be a better GM, to love these games more deeply, to have deeper relationships with my friends, to try (and fail) to start my own podcast, and to live more fiercely in life. I hope this message was positive and loud enough that even your loud-ass could hear.
    Sincerely, a fan. You have many.
    The main problem with "Hustle culture" people have as far as I've seen it is not that people can't do it or are afraid of doing it or whatever, but rather "why should I do that?", "why should I monetize every aspect of my life?", a lot of people need a clear line between work and their personal time. The saying can end up being "make your hobby into your job and you'll suck all the enjoyment out of your hobby" just as likely as "and you'll never work a day in your life".
    This is pretty inside baseball, but after JoCat (Crap Guide to D&D) left RUclips, I’ve felt much more obligated to engage on RUclips and tell the content creators I enjoy that I’m enjoying their content. I know my voice is just one amongst the static, but one more point of positive feedback cannot be a bad thing for your favorite creators.
    I’ve been listening to yall for 7-8 years now, and in many ways, I’m less invested in the specific shows and characters, and more invested in you guys as performers. You are also a coward if that's his choice. You are either all in and ambitious or a sideliner that would be happy with a million socked away. And get to have your family too.     It's not surprising to me that Troy loves John Cassavetes. His approach to the scenes that rely heavily on improv and how scenes come up in the moment is very much like the way Cassavetes's films were made. It can make the more drama filled scenes feel more real. His way of saying how to ignore the script and you can "find the moment" is a great way to create a story.
With that being said the thing I believe whole heartedly is that GCP would not have succeeded without the balance of the founders. This video is a perfect example. The fact that Joe and Troy care so much about each other and the business simultaneously yet disagree on plenty is what makes you guys. Troy's ambition and vision alone would not have done this, but Joe's business savvy and consideration also would not have.
    Just want to mention that at least some of the criticism about the Gatewalkers Adventure Path has nothing to do with what the Glass Cannon has done with it. It comes under fire even from people who don't watch/listen to GCP.
    I get what Troy was trying to say about it being on GCP to make it good, but sometimes you just don't have a lot to work with. BUT the most important thing I want Troy, Joe and everyone else at Glass Cannon to know is that i still LOVE this campaign. I think you're doing a great job with the AP.
    I actually find it interesting because I am relatively new to the Naish and just started listening to Giant Slayer last week. In one of the early episodes Gormley very nearly dies until everyone remembers cover which turned a crit into a miss. While discussing that Troy said something along the lines of "Whew. I was sitting here thinking this is going to kill her! How am i going to keep her alive? Thank goodness we remembered cover and you guys can see my roll, i didn't fudge it, etc."
    The implication was that Troy was strongly considering fudging the damage so as not to kill a PC. As a long time player of TTRPGs, I think it's bad to not let the dice tell the story. The struggles make the succeses so much sweeter!
    All of this is to say that while saying goodbye to Lucky and Talitha sucks, I think in the end it will make for a better story. Already we're seeing the effects on the other PCs and I think this is something that can pull the party together and make for some great moments going forward.
    If I come here to watch the Glass Cannon material, I come here for what they are and they are the only RPG podcast i follow because i like and love what i see, it's my kind of jam and not the fancy clean RPG actual plays i see around (not naming names). They are the middle ground between friends playing on camera and a studio podcast. Tell Troy to keep this in mind, that what you folks are doing is a niche that is working (for us as an audience at least!)
    In regards to the TPK Gatewalkers question, to me it doesn't have the same strong kind of story hook as Giantslayer, or even Strange Aeons, with both of those it felt like you were in something doing something and those things were important, in this one if feels like you are looking for something to do and things are just sort of happening to you because you walked through some gates in the past.
Troy does a great job with the Pathfinder and Call of Cthulu games. Also, shoult out to Joe for his consistently great job running Delta Green (I have seen several other groups run Impossible Landscapes and none of them generate the suspense that the cast on GCN does). They need to develop a vision (a Northstar) and build a team to accomplish the goals. I've been working in corporate America for 27 years and have seen both amazing and terrible leaders. There were some people I would run through walls for and there are others I wouldn't piss on if they were on fire. One trait in common of the great ones - they genuinely care about their team. If the system relies on heropoints for balance then it wasn't a good system to begin with. First edition was a great system (even with its faults) that bottlecaps felt like they were truly earned.     At this point the GCN is too large to ever make everyone happy no matter what stance you take on anything particular topic.     • @jelloburn
      @jelloburn Месяц назад +2
      I think it's more a matter of you can never be big enough to make everybody happy. The smaller you are, the smaller and more focused your audience will be. As the GCN has grown, it's only provided more variety and avenues for a wider audience (different GMs, players, game systems, etc.) which in my opinion is great.
      At the same time, it probably suffers a bit on being directly associated with the original Glass Cannon Podcast crew, so that when one of them (in this case Troy) says something that feels alienating or dismissive toward their fans, it hurts the entire brand. Like it or not, the GCN IS the original crew, and the things they say and do will affect the entire network.
      To be dismissive toward valid concerns is a recipe for disaster. Troy should just be more careful about how he communicates, because like it or not, he represents the entire GCN. It's what comes with leading a successful company. But he also isn't to the level of Musk or Bezos where they can afford to just piss off whoever they want and not worry about ramifications.
      I see what you're saying.
      I've been a huge fan since early Giant Slayer and have been to several live shows with the VIGCP, but their main show gets less than 20k views, and they've been doing this for almost 10 years. They're still super small, and they would do well to listen to the Naish. I have no criticism for the show, in fact I love most of what they produce. I have criticism for the sudden shift to Troy's message being about money. It's evident to me that it is about money from their GenCon booth not being about making content, but about people paying $200 to run through an hour of combat with a member of the show. The message that Troy is saying to us is that he's doing this to create generational wealth, which is the exact opposite thing you should tell people if you want their money. Referring to the Naish as customers and not an audience sends the message that we're dollar signs. And I hate that, because I'd like to think that isn't their intent. My phone background is Troy and I at the VIGCP Meetup in Columbus Ohio, and I really enjoy listening to this show and meeting the people in charge, it's just frustrating that recently the show has taken a dip in quality and Troy's attitude has really sucked the joy out of this. It's not like any of the people at GCP are going to read this, and I'm not arguing with anyone, I'm just sad and frustrated, and hopefully I'm not the only one.
I totally didn't give Troy enough credit for having open and honest discussions about the game the way cannon fodder has always been.
