Their strategy confuses me because it's so short sighted. There's no reason to use Epic at all when Steam is an option, and yeah these exclusivity deals are getting some people to actually buy stuff there, but I can't see that being sustainable.
They really need to prioritize making their launcher better than it is. I don't see them fully catching up with Steam ever, especially with how advanced Steam Input or Remote Play is, but even adding smaller things that Steam doesn't have would do something to make people prefer Epic in some aspects. More game organization options is something I really wish Steam had, so that's one small thing Epic could do. I think even making a simpler version of Steam Input that just translates Switch and PS controllers into XInput would go a long way, so you wouldn't have to use third party programs to use non Xbox controllers on Epic anymore. Those are just a couple ideas, I'm sure they could think of way more.
I just don't see their current strategy working, and I don't understand why they think it will. They need to change it, otherwise I don't see The Epic Games Store being around for that much longer.

Sweeney still don't know why Steam dominates. It isn't because of the Steam store itself, but for the huge list of community features, library management, internal drivers etc.
Steam is the most complete gaming app on PC.

I can respect someone that can say "Listen, I was a troll and I was wrong", that takes bigger balls than trolling with a receipt on twitter..
I have nothing against competition for Valve, REAL competition only benefits us gamers. But what Epic is doing is not real competition, it is trying to undercut the competition with an inferior product.
As for "I am getting older so I play less... aww.. you sweet summer child... listen... I have been a gamer since frigging PONG was released in my country. (late 1973) I am 55 myself, my group of gamer friends range from mid 30's up to well in their 70's. The fact I am getting older has never stopped me. Sure I have my times I play less, heck I have times I don't play at all for several weeks but in general?... the older I get, the more I play and the wider the range of games I play.

Anyone coming into the market is going to have tough competition. I was also advocating for EGS when it was released. But after 5 years, EGS storefront has shown little to no progress. Very clear that Epic isn't interested in pushing the platform forward. In the meantime, Valve has put so much into Vulkan, Steam VR, Linux gaming and the steamdeck. In my opinion they are trying their damnst to push PC gaming forward.

It’s just a matter of time; people just look at the quality of game launcher and customers base, but they don’t look at other aspects, such as durations of both stores in the game market, the benefits for game creators, and the resources.
With Epic’s resources, its launcher’s quality will definitely be at least equal to Steam’s given the same duration of existence.
About player base, they go to where hit games are, and with the Unreal Engine and the Epic Game Store’s great benefits for Creators, more hit games will appear in its store over time.
And the most important aspect is Epic Game Store is setup in a way that is friendly with young generations, and they are the future while Steam’s environment is more toxic over time.
Ask yourself this: If you have children, would you want them to use Epic Game Store or Steam?
Even as a creator, I felt sick every time I think about Steam’s cut(throat) of the game’s share.

@@tagodain "With Epic’s resources, its launcher’s quality will definitely be at least equal to Steam’s given the same duration of existence." no, not with how little money they make from sales with EGS. it literally took 4 years for them to bother about a shopping cart, a feature so old it was baffling EGS didn't have it from the get go. Plus tencent have a 40% stake in epic, do you really think they're not gonna pressure epic into pumping more money? The reality is EGS has been unprofitable for too long already and tencent will stop investing when they're tired of losing so much money. So unless they turn around and somehow convince poeple to buy on EGS, it's not looking good for EGS.
"About player base, they go to where hit games are, and with the Unreal Engine and the Epic Game Store’s great benefits for Creators, more hit games will appear in its store over time." we are seeing the opposite though, many games will now no longer bother with a potential deal with epic because it's too many potential sales lost over steam.
"And the most important aspect is Epic Game Store is setup in a way that is friendly with young generations, and they are the future while Steam’s environment is more toxic over time." not true at all lmao, younger generation less toxic? have you not seen how fortnite players are online?
"Ask yourself this: If you have children, would you want them to use Epic Game Store or Steam?" steam and GOG. i don't care about the lesser cut and it's not the consumer's responsibility. valve is actively pushing linux gaming in the right direction with cool projects backed up by red hat engineers at a time where windows is at its worst ever. Quite frankly valve has done more positivity for the whole pc ecosystem than epic ever will. Epic is anti linux, epic is anti-competitive, they are also anti-consumer. Epic isn't even competition, at least in any sense that could ever benefit the customer. They burn through cash paying developers for exclusives so that they don't have to compete against Steam in selling their games. They're bleeding cash to give people free games so that they don't have to compete against Steam to get people to their store.
Anyone can be a charity when you have tons of disposable money. But to actually be a competitor, they need to be a business, not a charity. A customer base you create through exclusivity deals and charity is not gonna stay when the reckless spending ends, unless you actually have something to offer them. Epic Games Store has nothing. In fact, they haven't really even tried to come up with anything. All of their efforts have been directed towards the developer side anyway. So much so that it appears they have forgotten that, at the end of the day, 70% of $59.99 is still more than 85% of $0.00.

Your question just translates to "When will Fortnite and that game making engine die?" To me. Because Epic Games is mostly dependent on VBucks and that game engine is a tool.

Not really. I'm talking specifically about their digital storefront. Not Epic Games as a whole. One singular game can't keep an entire storefront alive.

@@RealCynicalGamer Ah, guess I should've said "storefront" instead. But they have other battle royales and multiplayer games that I see them mismanaging, so, those games don't make as much as Fortnite. Despite that they're doing their part.

Epic Game Store will outlast Steam due to the following:
    1. Unreal Engine (this is the huge key!)
    2. Game Creator 88% and 12% Epic.
    3. Even 5% Royalty Fee of Unreal Engine is waived if using their payment processor.
    4. Gaming environment is setup for kids friendly and attract young generations over time and this is another big key!
    5. With the drama of Unity Engine in the last few months, no game engines will catch up to Unreal Engine anymore.
    6. Epic Game Store has been out for only 5 years; look back to the first 5 years of Steam for comparison.
    6. What happened to Valve’s Half-Life game engine?
    7. What happened to Steam when the old generation of gamers dies out?
    8. Games porting to Steam are not friendly/compatible for other platforms.
In short term, indie game devs may benefit more from Steam due to its current customer base, especially for non-live-service games, but in the long term, indie game devs are better investing in Epic due to many good benefits, especially for live-service games and made with Unreal Engine.
On Steam Game Store in general, 30% Steam, 5% Epic passing 1 million revenue, Creator is left with 65%.
On Epic Game Store in general, 12% Epic and 88% Creator.
Most games don’t make 1 million mark, true, but it’s a dream most indie game dev have, and a big motivation for these creators to opt for Epic Game Store, especially those using Unreal Engine; and hit games generate tons of profits, and most live-service games would eventually pass the 1 million mark.

you are deluded if you think epic is gonna outlast valve. My dude, epic will not last, and will close in the long term because their business model isn't sustainable nor profitable. Publishers started coming back to steam and ignoring offers made by epic because in the end, games sell far better outside of EGS.
EGS will die and epic will have to rely on unreal fees to survive, and fortnite money. just like before. Tim only sees short term profit, he doesn't see long term and it's gonna ruin the company.
You forgot to take into account tha valve doesn't just have steam, they have the steam deck (their game platform on linux) and they actively push for linux gaming to compete with windows. If anything valve has backup plans already, epic doesn't. We'll see who will last the longest.
