Thank you for having your own perspective and not just regurgitating what Gurman has said. I also believe that the M4 desktops will be released shortly after WWDC, rather than mid 2025. Hoping this is the case!
Thanks for watching and the post. Yeah, we will see what happens and I'm not sure 100% myself now.
Hi Craig
Many thanks for the info.
Which is the wallpaper in the MacBook Air M3?
I got it for free on the Unsplash website. But you may need to search for it as I can't remember exactly the name.
Thanks for posting this video
You got it
Do you think there will be any improvements to the M4 (not that it isn’t great now) between now & November? Plan to get a pretty loaded mbp 16. I do wish they have faceid on the new Mac’s.
I wouldn't worry about it. The M3s are very fast too and if you need one just get it.
I want the M4 24 inch iMac in the same bold, bright colors THIS year...it would make a great Apple Halloween event...
I also want that but Apple is sticking to the pastel colors for some reason that is beyond me.
Very useful info sir - it genuinely helped with my buying decision. Makes sense about the M3 chips being such outcasts in the lineup
Thanks for watching the channel.
Good useful information.😎
Thanks for the feedback. The new M4 chips will be very fast when the Pro, Max, and Ultra come out soon.
What do you do predict m4 max will be macbook pro 16 multicore please give rough estimate
Maybe 20 percent faster than m3 max.
I want a new M4 desk top when they hit. I am going to be using it for Final Cut, photoshop and Logic Pro. but I'm wondering about monitors. the Mac monitors are so pricey. so I was wondering, Is there a reason why people don't use a really good OLED tv instead of a Mac monitor ? I was thinking of getting like a 50 inch LG or Samsung OLed tv to use as a monitor that I could wall mount above my desk. but I am not a tech person. maybe someone could let me know if that is good or bad idea.
Yes, the M4 Mac mini sounds like it could be a great machine and the studio. There are a bunch of video on using OLED tvs if you search for them. The issue is burn-in sometimes and also the size of the screens means you need to turn head to see everything. But some people love it so it's an option for sure. I may do a video on that someday.
I looking to buy a full specced MacBook pro. Should I buy the m3 max or wait for the m4 max?
If you need one now I would get the M3 Max and look for a sale. The M4 could be a little while and I don't think it's going to be more then a 20% upgrade. Of course if you can wait then I would do what you feel is best.
@@craigneidel How long will we see the m4 max. Will it be released in 2025?
I would guess in the next 6 months for sure.
The chart at 3:44 is labeled incorrectly. The "Difference" should be 43.6% and 45.2%. Or you could change the label to "Performance of the iPad16,6 compared to the iPad Pro".
Yeah, that isn't my chart and that is why I didn't mention that part. That is on Geekbench.
I reckon the first lot of M4 Macs will come out at WWDC. September seems a long time to wait for M4 Macs after the iPad Pro being given M4 chips.
I agree but we will need to wait and see.
I'm glad the M3 Pro MBP more than meets my needs since I've only had it for a month.
Yeah even the m1 is fine so no worries.
Was going to buy an m3 iMac but am now wondering if I should wait for the m4? Do you have a recommendation?
I would maybe wait for WWDC to see what happens but I really think it could be around next year for the M4 iMac so you might want to pull the trigger soon on the M3. Won't be a massive difference that you will notice in real-world work. I would just get 16 GB ram if you can swing it as that makes the most difference.
@@craigneidelI appreciate your reply!
Thanks.
Do you think Apple will release Mac mini m4 pro with 64 GB RAM?
I'm not sure. It's possible due to Ai stuff but at least 32 for sure.
I am looking forward to the Mac Studio M4 Max. 😃 Hopefully next month and significantly more GPU cores.
Let's hope we see something.
How about a new 32" iMac with the new M4 Pro/Max?
Maybe let's hope
These BMs are from a iPad... How do those scores relate to the same chip in a computer?
They will be very similar for sure on Geekbench scores.
They plan on making the m2 for a few years since the new iPad Air has them, studio wont be till next summer unfortunately
We will need to see when the studio launches. I can't imagine a M4 MacBook Pro in November while the Studio has an M2.
Bought M1 Air one and half year ago, with 16 GB of RAM. Perfect machine. Used, but as brand new for 800 Euros. Sold it year later for 700 Euros. Made 30k in that time on it (web developer).
Grabbed M3 Pro 14" as I wanted to connect 5k2k ultrawide which Air would not handle to full potential for scaled resolution (due to 6k framebuffer limit and only one framebuffer for external displays).
In terms of performance, I don't feel like I've got a drastic improvement, for my work M1 would still be plenty and more than I need. 20 % improvement in terms of single core is fine (for Node.js and such) but not that drastic. It doesn't matter if I compile project 2 seconds faster. Now, having 6 efficiency cores in M3 Pro is fantastic.
That's true for sure. Ram is the key in all this and just get at least 16 GB or more and the CPUs won't be that different.
@@craigneidel got 36 for M3 Pro. I could afford 500 euros more for Max but saw no reason for it given my workflow.
But yeah, 6 Efficiency is fantastic for Web development where you need to split multiple small non user priority tasks for better responsiviness
36 is great if you can swing it. Yes, the CPU will be fast enough so no need to upgrade to Max.
The pacing in this video has improved since your earlier videos. I agree with your analysis on the desktop macs but Apple's delivery dates don't always match what seems to "make sense". Often they are constrained by external factors ( shipping, supply chains, working environment in foreign countries etc. ) which they don't control directly. Thanks for the video. I really don't want to buy an M2 Mac Studio right now and waiting for the M4 works ( for me at least ). Cheers.
Thanks for the feedback on the videos. I still have limited time and that is the main reason for not improving quicker but I'm so swamped that I need to be efficient in some cases. But I still enjoy making them.
I think to upgrade in Spring 2025 and will buy an M4 Air 16 or 18 gb Ram 1 TB I love the Air line up especially when I am on the go but even lat home my base M2 Air is my main machine.
I have an M2 Air with 16 GB of ram now and it does almost everything I need which is nice.
I got a $499 M2 Mac mini base last year. I just used it to get my dream job (you can have multiple windows and tabs open and not worry). Experienced the spinning beach ball though infrequently. I should have gotten the 16GB RAM. Best computer Ive ever owned. My only gripe is You can't attach external disk drives or external SD cards without the dreaded "You failed to eject disk before shutoff" or whatever. In past unfortunately, Ive have compromised data on external drives simply by leaving them plugged in to my Mac, and getting this warning many times. Thats ridiculous. Should be able to have external drives connected indefinitely without risk of corrupting precious data. If you know a work around please drop quick note. AS for M4 computers, my priority is an upgraded drone. I love seeing Apple desktops getting better and browse their site for fun.
Did you use the eject command to unmount the drives before disconnecting them (or removing the card from your reader)?
And use a similar process under Windows, except use the USB taskbar icon in certain situations. It is not necessarily well known that this is recommended. You can "get away" with skipping this step, but it can bite you too. I have encountered many people who were unaware of this step; they'll just yank the drive.
@@dannyize Hi Danny, my external drives connected to my Macs have always forced-disconnected on a daily basis by the software on their own - despite remaining physically connected. This software disconnect occurs either when the computer goes to sleep, I put it in sleep mode, or I power it off. I am not physically disconnecting the drives at all. Nevertheless they are getting corrupted over time due to this disconnecting-without-ejection phenomenon. Thats the whole frustration. (When physically removing the drives, I usually remember to eject first and then data corruption is not a problem.
If you eject them that should not be happening. Anyhow thanks for watching the channel.
Andre stated his devices are automatically removed, i.e: "falling off line" is how I would put it. It sounds to me like they are bus-powered devices that have no external power source (my speculation). Devices like this can be finicky, although the mini should provide ample power. Maybe try an upgraded cable if possible. Another band-aid might be to make sure they are formatted with APFS, which should provide better data integrity if they do go offline. But mostly I am grasping at straws here.
M4 is looking pretty darn solid, especially with intel not really being competitive on performance per watt. Problem is the graphics performance is not the same as a dedicated card, and supporting software. It is good though for most use cases and of course video/photo content. And content creators.
Yes, if you are a gamer you still want to be on a Win PC.
The Mini and Studio getting M4 being announced at WWDC makes a lot of sense. They’re low volume which is perfect for a chip production line that isn’t fully ramped up yet, and the MacBooks already have M3 so they can wait a while to get M4.
I agree with that but now they are talking about more M3's so not sure what is going on.
@@craigneidel Unfortunate and aggravating if that’s the direction Apple takes.
Time will tell for sure.
Comparing an Intel Processor based
on 7nm Lithography to an SoC that
is based on Enhanced 3nm Process.
That’s a little misleading. 😅
Yeah, but that is what they had out that was their fastest so I can't control that part.
I reckon M4 Mac Studios are coming at or around WWDC, I don't think Apple will wait for mid 2025 they'll want to stay ahead of the Snapdragon X Elite releases. And right now the M2 Mac Studios are a definite no-go zone for people looking for a Mac desktop (like I am)
We will see but I was hearing it's possible more M3 could be coming. That would be not what I expected but right now I'm not sure anybody knows for sure.
I have been saying this. The M4 Studio and Pro will be announced at WWDC and will reflect a change in Apple’s strategy. Once the regular consumers see the rest of the M4 chips in the Pro products they will be chomping at the bit to upgrade. Trickle down technology is what makes it possible.
Yes, I think they will need to come sooner then later.
QUESTION: WHEN THEY RELEASE NEW M4 MACS, DOES ALL ACCESSORIES LIKE KEYBOARD, MOUSE GO OBSELETE CONSIDERING HOW RADICALLY (OR RANDOMLY) THEY DROPPED SUPPORT FOR IPAD PROS?
TIM COOK IS LIKE A MOSQUITO
Not sure. They do make mistakes for sure.
How about the monitors? They are pretty outdated
Might incorporate the new dual Oled tech
@@craigneidel Hopefully, they need to do those updates or I will jump to Samsung or LG
We will see but it could take a little bit of time.
The M4 is over 700mhz faster in clock speed than the M2. That makes a big difference.
It could but at the end of the day it just depends on what people need. I edit 4k videos all day long with the M2 without an issue but faster is better.
The M4 is what the M3 should have been. Right on the money Craig! And I thought of this too because..why did they rush that Halloween spooky Apple Event? Oh right...*Mr.Crabs Voice* Money! 🤑
Nice, and thanks again for watching.
I dont understand why only premium product get so high upgrade after there every new successor. Means if you look even the premium phones 3 yrs back and compare it to now you see 100%(assumption) improvement but when check same thing in budget phones you dont see that jump especially in processing power, they just focus on improving the gimmicks rather than actual power. And best example is gaming industry in the smartphone market, what was the last game you saw on mobile that made you think that it made a high level quality graphics game.
Maybe, but the budget phones have come a really long way. For what you can do with a $200 phone now is crazy if you think about it. Back in the day the budget phones were so laggy you couldn't use them.
I look forward to using this for watching RUclips and maybe 3 tabs of chrome. Hopefully the M4 can handle it! (sarcasm)
😂
In all seriousness, this thing is a beast. I am using M1 iPad pro and that thing is WAYYYY more stronger or more useful for my use case. I can barely even use it's full potential and yes, I video edit and I do some music/voice overs on it. The thing handles everything I throw at it like a champ. I've even gamed on the M1 Pro and it does even games like genshin impact really really well. The M1's are insane but if you can afford the M4, go for it, I know I would!
Yeah, I won't use all the power of the M4 either but it will be fun to see how fast the M4 Pro, Max, and Ultra are.
Craig, it doesn't matter how fast it is. If you don't buy enough memory you won't get anywhere. It will be as driving a sports car in a school zone. Buy as much as you can. 32 is just the lowest you can go for that to take off....
I think 16 gb is enough for most users.. most being key word.
Totally agree with you! For PROFESSIONAL use, the minimum is 64GB RAM.
64 GB... it depends on what you are doing. You should get all different amounts depending on how you define professional work.
M4 Mac mini for me.
I might pick one up too.
If Apple moved so fast from m3s, we should take the clue and avoid the m3s too...unless they are on a big sale
Yes if you can find them on sale m3s are fine.
Apple only avoid the M3 because the N3B technology inside it is more expensive like the N3E technology in M4 (it's use 25% more layers, and that increase the manufacturing cost with a significant amount). So from your viewpoint there is no problem with M3, it's only cost more for Apple to put that inside your device.
Yes, the M3s don't have an issue it's just that it wasn't what Apple wanted for the 3nm chips.
The M3 chip seems to be an orphan. Apple has skipped ahead, moved on. I would try to wait for an M4 Air if I liked that model, or look for deep discounts on M2 or M3 MacBook Air laptops. That the M4 chips are amazingly fast doesn't really matter for most laptop tasks. What may matter more is how efficient the M4 chip might be and how this may influence battery life or a redesign of MacBooks.
Maybe but I would agree with you on looking for sales on the M3 coming out soon. I think they will start discounting them more soon.
Still with wifi 6e not 7
Ok.
And most people won’t notice the difference.
@@MrSamPhoenixtrue
I agree
The M4 can blow everyone away and I love the architecture, but with Apple OS running a handful of apps and half of those on VM together with a price that would more than break the Guinness book of world records, it's not a hard decision to pass on this one.
Only get one when you need it. Thanks for watching the channel.
@@craigneidel You bet.
how much efficient m4 why windows stuck in old architecture totally worst
Thanks for watching.
don't waste your money right now
I agree unless you need one.
M5 will be based 2nm 😂😂 or no need to wait.
You never know
No need to wait, the M4 is very powerful, efficient, and cool.
Yeah, the M4 is as powerful of an iPad anybody will need for the next 5 years to be honest.
Apple can’t start 2025 selling iPad with M4 and Mac Studio with M2, a desktop for profesional, this is impossible. So, this year we have to see a new Mac Studio. And is make no sense to launch a new Mac Studio this summer or fall with a almost 1 year old processor (M3 Max/Ultra). Or will they skip Mac Studio all together this year? I don’t think so, is make no sense…
That is what I basically said so I'm not sure what you are saying here.
Don’t buy the m4
Ok but wht
