I used to have numb hands and I did exactly 6:36
To be honest, nobody taught me, I didn’t read any literature on it, I just did it naturally because it felt good. Scary and somewhat amazing what our brain does to our body.

Been riding for 47 years now. Never experienced numb hands until this season. Nothing changed... position same, riding style the same but 20km in I get numb fingers. Will give these exercises a try.

@semipro cycling, at 7:10 this is actually putting more tension on the nerve rather than gliding/ flossing. This tends to aggravate the nerve more due to the increased stretch/tension on the nerve. Instead, move the hand in the same direction of the head at the same time provides the "flossing" motion. For the median nerve glide slightly more tension is added by slightly extend the shoulder/elbow while the hand is moving with the head and should feel gentle. Enough tension to get some sliding/flossing but not too much to increase symptoms. Hard to explain in just words, hope that was clear. I love the in-depth analysis of cycling and its related topics. Keep up the excellent work!

Hey @patbrowncyclist3087, I agree that moving the head in the opposite direction of the hand results in a greater 'stretch' for the nerve, while moving the head in the same direction, as you described, offers a middle ground. I chose to demonstrate only the basic and stretch versions to avoid confusion and to potentially target different areas that may be impacting the nerve.

When on the hoods, I keep my hands toward the side of the hood, not the top. This keeps my wrist in a straight line with my forearms and I don't get numb hands.

Set the bike up properly, I used the what I call mummy arms system, put your arms out straight, bend from hip not the waist if you hands fit into the hoods perfect, if they go over or behind the hoods you need to move to seat for or aft. Also if your seat is to high putting weight on the hands through the shoulders & neck.
