If ya think about it, the bubble wrap thing for wallpaper isn't too illogical. Air is used for Isolation in Nature, for example (Some bird species puffing up and creating little pockets of air in their feathers, allowing hot air to circulate there) and it's used in space 'travel' (dunno if it's travel when we just leave the planet and not the orbit) in the form of Aerogel, which basically is solid air. Using a foil with air pockets in it to maybe further Isolate houses that weren't as isolated back then does make sense.
Another way this could be played is having the mongoose also know what the answer is and for his role to not be public. Like that when someone is trying to sway you into voting for X answer you don’t know if it’s the snakes(s) or the mongoose.
