This is a great series Michael! Even if I am not interested in covering the specific song you have posted I still get to learn a lot from your lesson which can be applied to any song I am covering, so that’s really cool!

Great lesson! Appreciate the way you broke the song down and gave some ideas on how to approach this for band play.

Old video but figured I'd add: Bob Dylan didn't fully write the song. Bob Dylan wrote the chorus/melody but left it as a sketch. Ketch Secor completed the song and wrote all of the verses.

Just a suggestion for the future, if its at all possible for you. If you could get a buddy to play the rhythm guitar while you improvise, it would make it much easier to “hear" how the chord tones are being targeted. I know you can play a backing track or use a looper pedal but its just so much more effective if there is another live person playing the other part. Also if you teach songs by say The Allman Brothers or The Eagles where there are twin guitars playing different lead parts.

I KNOW. That's hard to do at scale - I'm trying to make a bunch of these and everyone is working, kids, etc. I will try to use a looper more frequently for these, but you're so right - having a friend play the other part is so much better. Thanks!

Loved the lesson. Michael, when “picking” chords as you demonstrated, is there a name for simply picking the chords in a song progression? In other words, not strumming the chords, but picking the chord changes? Is that what is meant by “arpeggio?” I’m a beginner and when I want learn a new song I simply just slowly pick through the chords. Thank you.

I do t know that there is a name for what you’re describing. It’s not arpeggios. They are about picking the exact notes in a chord.
