    What I love about Live Aid is that all the tickets had been sold before most of the line up had been announced. A lot of this audience were not a Queen audience and Freddie has them clapping along to Radio GaGa so naturally. This was the most perfect performance and luckily it lead to the fantastic 86 tour. Nothing can top this. I love your analysis on this page, thank you.

    Great review! I wish you would have kept the vid going to react to Freddie’s Ay Oh with the audience. One of his best.
    Your comment about the lack of lighting, backdrops etc made me think of the pre show interview they did. They were asked, “it’s such a stark stage, no lights, no smoke, no backdrops. How will you handle it.” Brian responded, “well it comes down to whether or not you can play.”
    Freddie literally seemed to smirk, and I imagine he was thinking “hold my beer”

    You didn’t mention Brian in your video, but I’d like to point out his ability to drive the band with his guitar without ever interfering with Freddie’s singing. It’s clear to me that Brian recognized Freddie’s genius and how important it was to allow Freddie to be the star. To me, Brian’s lack of ego is a big reason Queen is so good live. (Not to mention he can really play too).

    Thanks for pointing out things I never consciously thought to notice before. Probably some trained singer could not do this so well, but Freddie never took singing lessons, so it is more amazing what he can do with his voice and all the subtle nuances, shadings, variations and timing he does so instinctively and naturally and effortlessly! THESE are among the things that made Freddie so great!

    Nice reaction! Something I really like about Freddie's voice is that he has a very rich sound, in his middle register, such as on this song, for example. A lot of tenors who perform this song don't sound very dynamic, because their voices needs to sing higher notes in order to sound dynamic. Freddie sounded equally dynamic singing low, middle or high notes. At the same time because his voice had that rich sound, it does not sound as if he is singing very high, even when he is hitting those Bb4 notes in this song. It would be nice if you could discuss Freddie's voice type. Since there is always a debate about the subject.

    A couple of other things I find fascinating about Freddie - is his elocution - you can actually understand the words he’s singing - and Queen often use some (at least compared to newer music) more unusual or complex words in their songwriting Another point, and this is not directed at Queen but all bands of the era, is they sang without earwigs - they had to sing with stage monitors and I imagine in these large stadiums you really would not be able to hear much more than the crowd. They are sweating so much because they’re under a lighting rig comprising old school light globes that are like a small heater

    • @sannaolsson9106
      @sannaolsson9106 4 года назад +2

      They didn't have ear monitors yet at this point. I think they came later in the 90s. Or maybe they existed but it was very rare. I never see them when looking at older stuff.

    • @ZENOBlAmusic
      @ZENOBlAmusic 4 года назад +1

      It is true that they didn't have in ear monitors, but it quite remarkable how Freddie could hear himself when he was constantly running around on stage. It often happened that the monitor only helped if you stood at certain points on the stage, you can see he goes beyond the monitors in this performance.

If I may add 3 more lines to your exceptional understanding of performing as well as the spirit of both Freddie & Queen - 1) the total ease with which he does everything that he did 2) it was totally natural for him to engage with the audience (oh of just 72,000 in front of him and a Billion watching on TV) even those little playful gestures between words 3) he was having a party in front of the whole world.

What most people don't know is that Queen had a #1 song written by every person in the band. It was not just one guy carrying 3 others. The front man and lead guitar will ALWAYS be the face of the group. However, with Queen, everyone contributed a lot. It gave them depth, and a wider scope of music.

    Yes I am a die hard Queen fan. . .to the point that if Brian May and roger Taylor hadn't been so involved in making Bohemian Rhapsody movie I wouldn't have watched it.
    Question: why does everyone cut this performance off so quickly before the vocal improv with the audience the note heard around the world?

    Did someone mention that he was told not to sing (something re throat). Only one Freddie - such a singer, such a stage presence, so impossible to duplicate. He always appears to be having a great time. You can hear a couple of off notes, probably due his throat concerns. But l don't really think anyone cared. Everyone could feel his energy and were drawn in, impossible not to be. RIP FREDDIE

    Thanks for such a great reaction! Big respect to you.
    I had a dream... Could you react on "Mother Love" by Queen? I guess it's one of the best vocal performances ever. Want to know your reaction on it)

    Hi John, could you have a look at Mother Love, the last song that Freddie recorded, he was unable to finish recording the song so Brian May ended up recording the last part. It’s so hauntingly beautiful.
