I'm a bit of a nerd, and I've always wondered how the transmissions on FWD cars like this works. I can understand the longitudinal RWD gearbox, but I can't quite wrap my head around how a FWD gearbox looks like inside.
A RWD car has a driveshaft that goes along the underside of the car that connects the transmission and the differential,which through halfshafts delivers the power to the axle. A FWD car has the transmission and the differential already in one package (also known as a transaxle) and this then goes through the halfshafts,which are sent through the front wheels,which is why FWD cars are compact. Rear engined RWD cars like the VW Beetle do the same thing,only this time the transmission sends the power to the rear wheels.
its kinda like a normal rwd transmission just more compactand where the output shaft would be on a rwd transmission there is a differential to send the power but its all one piece.

FWD Gearbox inside is probably same than RWD, but FWD Gearbox sides are different because driveshafts.
