  • For this album review, Sturgill Simpson takes on a new alias / "persona" in a drifting, soft rock malaise full of questions of identity and lost connections.
    Best Songs: 'Jupiter’s Faerie’, ‘One For The Road’, ‘Who I Am’, ‘Swamp of Sadness’
    Worst Song: ‘Mint Tea'

      you didn't ask but we miss you at dehh man, you practically raised me with the amount of times i'd watch you rant about records on there but i'm always tuned in at your channel cause that practically raised me too haha! where can i vote for you to talk about nah's record; mortal glitch? and have you listened to coin locker kid? i would love to vote for that too since its some crazy experimental shit you might love!

      @@gombocdimensional9050 Oh that's really sweet of you to say! Thank you, friend. Sometimes I miss being on there too but I think the guys have it held down without me. If I stuck around there I would have, eventually, burned out worse and ruined the dynamic of the show. But I'll pop on here and there. As far as voting on albums I took that away from my Patreon cuz I didn't wanna take folks' money and not fulfill the videos. But once I get my life back to normal I'll prob bring that back. And I don't know either of those albums but I'll look into them!

    Confirmed: Spectrum Pulse and Anthony Fantano are united in their hatred of Steely Dan! (I can only tolerate them one song at a time; I wish their fans stopped referring to them as a rock band. They don’t kick any amount of ass. They are just a smooth prog pop band.)
    I haven’t enjoyed any Simpson project since his two bluegrass albums in 2020. It’s frustrating to see him embark on these classic rock detours when all I want is another grandiose, orchestral country album like A Sailor’s Guide to Earth.
    On a side note, my favorite country album of 2024 is Charley Crockett’s retro-flavored $10 Cowboy. He’s got such a commanding voice and a talent for hooks. I’m surprised that it’s gotten so few reviews.

    Sturgill can’t be compared to anyone though not even himself he’s keeping true to himself and always stressing his comforts it’s an album meant to make you feel and that’s what matters

  • @KompyCalpestare

    I think harping on the vocals despite Simpson's recent injury betrays a broader uncharitability in your reading--- framing it as a matter of "either can't or won't" elides the many moments that point, imo pretty decisively, to "can't". Of course if you just don't like dad rock then it is what it is, but I wish you could be a little more specific about where and why the romantic vagabond narrative stops working for you

    • @SpectrumPulse
      @SpectrumPulse  Месяц назад +4

      @@KompyCalpestare I think saying that this particular vocal delivery doesn't really work for me but makes sense in context of the album isn't exactly "harping", but where the romantic vagabond narrative stops working for me is quite simple: he's got three kids at home in the States, and you don't just get the benefit of drawing on that distance for tragedy if you conveniently exclude the stuff that looks bad for a grown ass man in his mid-40s, which a lot of acts don't have the privilege to ignore.

    • @KompyCalpestare
      @KompyCalpestare Месяц назад

      @SpectrumPulse well, I reckon we probably differ most saliently in how sympathetic a figure Simpson needs to be for the narrative to work for us, then. If he's a deadbeat dad or a bad husband or whatever else, I struggle to see how "privilege" figures in the equation of how his art reflects or doesn't reflect that-- don't all artists have the privilege of telling their side of the story, of lying to their audience about who they really are?

    • @SpectrumPulse
      @SpectrumPulse  Месяц назад +3

      ...kind of funny that I'm literally just reiterating what I said in my review here: because the average woman artist who would do less would get ripped to shreds for it - the Emily Scott Robinson example where she handles the hypothetical strain has way more pathos. That's a privilege to ignore it that Sturgill has, to even just dodge the conversation by not putting it in his music.
      And to go a step further, Sturgill is also smart enough to not frame himself as a "good guy" on this album... but that's the tricky thing, he's still playing for empathy I any romantic framing, the tortured artist, which I'm even more willing to accept if it's just a relationship on the rocks. When you get to his age and put kids in it, I'm less charitable, even as I can acknowledge the escapist fantasy here

    I don’t fully understand why he would put out something so lackadaisical. And it’s shocking that so many on social media are saying “best album of ‘24” or “greatest country album of the year.” Country isn’t even what he was going for so how can someone tie it to that genre. And why is he away from his family? Cuz he’s lost? Sounds like it.
