I filmed this session, we met Sturgill at Pickathon in 2011 and he blew our minds, particularly when he played "Never go to Town Again," if you haven't seen it check it out, I think that was the most impressive in terms of guitar playing. Then he came to Knoxville a few months later and stayed with us for a few days and thats when this was filmed. At the time he was thinking about quitting music and I'm pretty sure he was working at a grocery store. Really glad things worked out for him, he's a super humble dude and as real as they come. I've recorded at least 300 bands and there were a handful that right away felt special, Sturgill was the first, then Shakey Graves, Lake Street Dive, St. Paul and the Broken Bones, and a few others.
The things I would do to have a been a fly on the wall during “Never Go to Town Again”. He built that guitar from scratch as well. What was he like working with?
@@stephen7991 Super chill dude, really down to Earth and wouldn't bend on his ideas or principles for anyone, I knew right away there was 0 chance he'd ever sell out. Never Go To Town Again he had just played a late set on the main stage and came straight to the Pumphouse to record so they had momentum and were hyped up. We smoked an olympic torch sized joint and then he blew the roof off the place. I was behind the Pumphouse editing during his first few songs and our audio guy looked over at me and said "are you familiar with Stevie Ray Vaughan" lol. We were mesmerized right away. I only wish I had caught him a few years later, we met him during my first outing shooting live music in a tight space and my skills weren't what they are now.
I hope Sturgill will want to put out more music as Sunday Valley again someday. As The Blues Brothers Donald "Duck" Dunn was fond of saying, that band was powerful enough to turn goat piss to gasoline.
I can't give this enough thumbs-ups! Michael also needs to track down "I Wonder". Wouldn't surprise me to see ol Sturg break his 5 album promise and come out with a blues album.
Sturgill Simpson Jackson Pollock'd Americana all over this song. He's picking, blends into rockabilly, meanwhile his voice is from somewhere in rural Appalachia. From there he runs head long into rock and roll and then somehow he rides the rail moving back and forth between these in this mesmerizing confusion of energy. This song is absolutely fantastic.
You definitely need to check out Never Go To Town again from this same set, which he uses "appalachia blues tuning" where the guitar is tuned like a banjo and it is an absolute barn burner!
You just shake your head and smile 😃, that's about I can do with this one. My goodness... The speed and accuracy is in bluegrass territory and he's playing on a tele. Go on with your bad self Mr Simpson 👏
First time hearing Mr. Simpson play. Reminds me alot of Commander Cody +LPA (hotrod Lincoln) Mr.Sturgill and band play very well in this style however, and I can see it's unpopular to say here but to me, right from the beginning something sounds out of place even with the vocals and choruses almost like it was a cover of a song by a band that is playing it a little wrong or not completely worked out. It was difficult for me to listen to. Perhaps similar to another video you covered of ZZTop where you thought it maybe wasn't their best performance. Perhaps I'll check out other of his songs as well. Thank you for all the enthusiasm and knowledge you bring to us all . Keep playing ... All of us!
I saw Sturgill when he had Laur Joamets playing guitar with him.,that show was the most face melting country show I ever saw. Who says country pickers can't thrash with the best of them!
Hello from Havre De Grace. Wish I could be there with ya tonight brotha! Went to it 3 or 4 years ago and had VIP tickets that were given to me in the parking lot (I originally had lawn seats, and the random person that had the VIPs couldn’t stay due to a family emergency). On his way out of the lot he handed them to me and said pay it forward. It paid it forward twice…. Gave my tickets to someone looking to buy some. Then half way through Willie’s set, he tossed his hat into the crowd, and I caught it. Behind me a few seats back was an 11ish year old girl wearing a willie shirt. I put his hat on myself for just a moment just so I could wear it once, then handed it back to her. Willie gave me a nod. Her face and the overall experience made it one of true best shows I’ve ever been to. Enjoy!
Love this tune, love Sturgill. Great pick for a react video Mike! Also, love the message at the end of the video. "See you at Maryweather, Come play high." Lol! Can do sir!
I was so happy to hear you feature Sturgill Simpson as the artist he is. I played in country bands since I was in the 6th grade hit the road at 12 years old and when I heard Sturgill play it blew my mind. Anybody that has ever played for themselves or in front of a crowd knows what it is to be in the groove. And when Sturgill is rocking his head back and forth he is in the groove and that's what makes his music so unique I think the industry trying to modernize him and refine his style has detracted from the essence of his music. "You Take the Crown" "Long White Line" "Sometimes Whiskey Sometimes Wine" some of His best.
My buddy sent this 10 months ago. It just played & all I knew it was "D" So I'm doubted utube taught it. I put it in anyway. And I seen you!! I don't guess I could found anybody, any better "In the "World👈 To had taught this song!!! I really don't know how you do what you do!! Thank you sir.
Sunday Valley- Never Go To Town Again from the same Dacha Sessions FWIW the best Sunday Valley show on RUclips is live from the Pulaski County Courthouse steps.
I was there with my son last night. Sorry we missed him and hope he gets better. Gotta grab him before he's done touring as SS. Great to see this the next morning though. Thank you.
Love me some sturgil. Going to farm aid this weekend in CT and so upset to hear he will not be able to perform due to some vocal issues. However, my dude Tyler Childers will be there. Getting married next weekend and needed an escape from the craziness of it all so my lady got me tickets to see Tyler, Willie, and the rest of them. Love the content man. Always have. Love even more that you do Tyler, Sturgil, and the rest of those true country folk!!
Awesome video. Had tickets to see his final show at the Ryman in Nashville, was going to drive up from Florida. Just found out the rest of his shows this year are cancelled due to his vocal issues. Obviously I hope he's doing alright and that's way more important than the concert but god dammit i'm bummed. Been trying to see him for a long time now, especially tough being all the way down in FL. One day.. Sturgill's the man
HUGE thanks for this. I only discovered this song about two weeks before your video came out.....I was wondering how to learn this. Often times I get caught up in the excitement of the song and have difficulty because I over complicate things......Now since watching you outline what he is doing, I have a head start. Thanks Again!
I was there, too! First time at that venue. What a great time. Tyler filled in nicely for Stu but I would've loved to see The Bluegrass Avengers in action.
This is so good, I mean just playing the riffs? so hard, but then singing over that seems INSANE lol Sturgill is unmatched and undefeated in my eyes, King, Goat, all that...
Sturgill is super good I give you all the credit in the world for even attempting to pull that one off. There's a lot of hours under the belt for that. Good job best luck
1. Love Sturgill 2. That guitar you’re playing has a great meaty throaty sound with the perfect unique twang I love! 3. Thank you for these videos. Well I was able to count to three, and that makes for a pretty good day for me as a picker!
Saw Sturg for the first time in Virginia Beach a few weeks back. Hands down the best act that played. This includes wIllie Nelson and Tyler Childers. They couldn’t touch this man. Can’t wait to see where his career goes next.
Dude, Ive watched dozens of your videos. never commented on a single one. I must say, you were obviously having a shit monday, garfield style. I love your enthusiasm for music man. Way to shed the shit day. Ill keep watching 100%
It's criminal that Sturgill hasn't re-released the Sunday Valley catalog, and also how he's treated the rest of that band. As much as I'm a huge fan of his, that disturbs me greatly. He's never played with a drummer that equals what he had in Sunday Valley.
Went to the Outlaw Music Festival in Atlanta a couple nights ago. It’s great. Childers filled in for Sturgill due to some vocal issues which I was completely fine with. Tyler and his band are great. Willie is getting old! He sounded a little rough on his opening tune but pulled some pretty great stuff out later in the set. Have fun!
Bruh so glad you’re watching this I’ve loved this song for years and sturgill rocks hard with sunday valley. Me n my buddy played it at a fundraiser for his skin surgery after he dropped 300+ lbs.

That’s got to be one of the best performances of a song ever. Regardless of genre. He put that tele to work.
YES YES YES!!! This is my favorite recording of a song by The Sturg. I just wish there were more Sunday Valley sets on the inter-webs.

Saw him in Raleigh, so glad he brought the bluegrass boys with him after the 2020 tour.

Don't get me wrong. I absolutely love bluegrass, but I pray to god every night before bed that he'd release this version on Spotify.
i die inside every time i have to go to youtube just to play this version and Never Go To Town Again
Whoever owns the rights to the "To the Wind and on to Heaven" Album by Sunday Valley's gotta release it sometime. I would love that.
Enjoy the show! Sturgill is hands down one of the best things in music today.
