When Comedians go Too Far

- Ten years ago on the Opie and Anthony radio show, Bobby Lee told a story about an encounter with a supposedly underage h**ker in Tijuana, which he was forced to address on his podcast this year.
In this video I compare Bobby Lee's comedy to Tom Segura's and Bill Burr's to see what happens when comedians go too far.

Nah you're thinking of Garth Brooks
Maybe he and garth team up
Garth is his partner, and I think toms been trying to double cross him for a hot minute now.
What about the big red machine? 🤣🤣
The reason Bobbys story was offensive and Toms wasnt is that Tom was actually telling a joke. Bobbys story may not be true, but it was not structured in any way like a joke.
If it looks like a confession, sounds like a confession and nothing is inherently comical about it, it must be a funny Bobby Lee joke and was purely fictitious.
That mf ment that shit, there was way too much detail and guilt to be funny at all.
@@gurdevsingh4356Yeah, I mean, I don’t understand where the joke comes in.
It’s more like he’s telling us about the horrific thing he did, and inserting jokes into the story. Definitely made me feel gross listening to it.
Exactly. It's the structure is 100%. Tom was poking fun at the awkwardness of being naked in front of your child because a child is fickle and because of how people reflexively react to the concept. Burr was making fun of the reductiveness of unproductive, shallow DV talks and intrusive thoughts. Bobby was poking fun at... some underaged girl who didn't want to be forced into prostitution, was crying from how traumatic it was, and him wanting to go back for seconds... Super hilarious /s

Agreed and as I have never an will never participate in child prostitution In have NO idea were the exaggeration is .
Hence why it sounds like the promotion of child prostitution.
Hence why bobby needs locking up in the hardest prison in America.
@@idolhand6468 hmm well generally if someone does shock comedy whatever is more shocking….
in this case the more extreme exaggeration (the girls age, the gang with a machete that couldn’t catch bobby, possibly the whole story) doesn’t make the joke funnier but more concerning, with no punch line other than possibly “oh look at me I was raped everyday for a summer” type humour. Because the joke isn’t at the expense of himself the relief isn’t there just prolonged anxiety.
Thanks for saying that anyone who understands this has used child prostitution.
To lock someone up for making a terrible joke is crazy compared to locking them away for actually committing a awful act. If there really is a family/gang/cartel out for Bobby’s throat because of child rape I doubt they would ever stop. With no woman raising their voice how are we supposed to arrest the man for a story he’s told no one else? I agree to call him out and investigate if need be.

I love Bobby Lee and I am a big fan of bad friends. Not so much of tiger belly so a lot of it probably comes from his relationship with Andrew. The problem here is there is no punch line. Ricky Gervais is a great example of shock jokes but it's the build up and punch line that makes Gervais a master of uncomfortable jokes. What Bobby is doing is effectively just telling an uncomfortable story to hear. That's the difference in understanding comedy and shock comedy in my opinion

The punch lines I've noticed and enjoyed are subversions of expectations, in brackets: "She looked like Natalie Portman (A beautiful woman)" -> "In Leon the Professional (A cute child)"; "She was crying so I did what any good man would do (stop having sex, comfort her instead)" -> "I powerfucked her".
I didn't like the set-up, it felt a bit fumbly and rushed, and the second part was less about the joke and more about showing that it WAS a joke, which I didn't like much either, and I think "So I hurried up" would've been plenty of subversion instead of "powerfucking", but there's definitely punch lines.
I like how the lady just made up the age of 12... it's like she wants it to be true smh.

The problem with Bobby Lee is that he has told these stories as a part of his origin. He also has said so many times he was molested by someone with down syndrome which he also has now said is a lie. The thing is tho he says this stuff mixed in with stories of his abusive unloving Dad during moments that were not even remotely funny. When Theo says is obviously made up stories about his past and the characters in it they are inherintly funny but Bobby seems to be looking for sympathy. Also it gets really confusing bc people started listeng to podcasts partially to know their favorite entertainers on a deeper level maybe so when you are telling fake stories that aren't funny and are very plausible it is really hard to discern the truth. I've never found Bobby Lee that funny. Tom segura's okay but overrated in my opinion and Bill Burr is one of the goats not even comparable to these two.
Agreed, I'm relieved somebody else has finally pointed this out lolol, Bobby's always playing the victim and that just gets old fast
Nothing a Comedian says is a lie, except when referring to how many came to his show......Everything is a setup for a laugh
calling bill burr "one of the goats" while saying bobby lee goes too far and plays the victim in the same breath is the perfect reasoning for no one taking your comment with any value at all. if you think a dude that has to resort to scream comedy is one of the goats but Bobby just "plays the victim" you don't know comedy at all 💀
Yeah that’s what’s a huge difference with Bobby Lee. He started his career as a trans comedian on MTV:Mad TV where one of his best characters was a lady, Ms. Swan, so he was already “edgy” playing both sex characters on a pretty good viewed show and took off with the LGBTQ+ community and continued to mess with gay jokes or being on tv playing a lady character. Continues to mess around with gay jokes and go deep into sex jokes and podcast not that funny listening to him talk about being raped while being a kid and Andrew making fun of him for saying he has sucked dicks before and continue to lean into that and feel like a victim and never say, even with his brother on the show, the truth and these are all jokes not serious but too late with this kind of comedy “cancel culture” being soft about jokes so his constantly telling these stories as jokes never comes out to say I’m just joking. And make a serious apology to move on.
Spot on. Totally agree. And for that reason, I’m not sure I believe believe Bobby is lying. I think it’s a plausible story. Saying it’s a joke is too easy a cop out. Not to mention, where is the punchline? What is the joke?
To those who say “you don’t get it”, yeah, I don’t. Absurd humor is all it can be, but again, what is so funny about this story?
Bobby Lee was not lying about his Tijuana story. He’s gone back and said it was a joke the minute he got criticized for it.

Great video, man. You really do a good job of analyzing the whole thing rationally. I feel you glossed over the last point too quickly, though. It's not *what* Bobby said; it's the context within which he said it that's the problem. He told the 'joke' as if it's a real story that happened to him. It's great that you figured out he was joking, but I didn't. And many others didn't, either. We genuinely thought he was sharing a story. And I think it's unfair to blame the audience for not getting it, when he told it as if it's real. Even the albino bit -- it seemed real. Now, I didn't get offended and angry -- so I'm not calling for Bobby Lee to be cancelled. But he did f*ck up. And he needs to own it. (Which he has, so it's all good as far as I'm concerned. Like I said: Great video. I just felt that this was a point worth making.)

The fact that he didn't immediately freak out on that woman, the way he quietly denied it, is EXTREMELY TELLING. Innocent people react way stronger to an accusation like that. A guilty person tries to stay calm as to not give away their anxiety. Innocent people don't have that worry so they freak out.
Watch some police interrogation analysis videos and you will see that your statement is just not True for everyone.
That's a fucking unhinged thing to say. Different people react differently to things. Plenty of people would be taken aback by such an awkward, unexpected moment and react as Bobby Lee did. Especially people like Lee who are nonconfrontational and meek by nature. You do not have enough information by a long shot to make the claim you just made.

You add very insightful commentary and the way you describe these situations using colloquial terms while staying professional is very admirable. I understand you want to show the full reference of footage to properly back up your point as to not take anything out of context, but I'd suggest cutting down on the footage a bit. It ends up making the video be about 80% the reference footage and only 20% of your actual commentary.

As far as comedy goes in my opinion, everything is on the table to be made fun of. Its the execution and intent behind the joke that matters. Its a fine line and a delicate dance.
That sounded less like a joke than a confession
I’ve never heard this story… but when he said “in the professional” I was just like “ohh nooooo😮”😅😂
"Comedy" isn't a get out of jail free card that leaves you immune from criticism, and people calling you out for poor joke-telling isn't cancel culture. The issue isn't the topic but how he told it.
We all know jokes aren't always jokes. People joke about their experiences, things they believe, or to indicate morals. That doesn't mean Bobby was serious but it does mean how he chose to tell the joke (and the setting) left room for doubt, hence the flack.
I wouldn’t admonish anyone who takes offense to a story about raping an underage girl. That’s a pretty normal & healthy reaction. You claim that people should automatically assume these stories are fake but how are people to distinguish when comedians often tell true stories? I’ve been able to verify stories that Segura has told so it’s not always fiction & the stories are always told as if they actually happened. It’s just as easy to call the comedians or people like you “snowflakes” for taking offense at people taking offense at something that was designed to be offensive.
The worst part of the Segura joke for me is you hear an unusual amount of applause from the audience but you can see like four people clapping
Tom stole the shower joke, originally it was from a lesser known comic talking about giving his nephew a bath but the punchline is the same
Why do they think we will laugh at "anything". There is a reason we use the phrase "a filter".

Awesome vid man.
The entire point of standup comedy (aside from entertaining) is to take people out of their stress and into a funny or shocking story you are telling. Not everyone will like every story/joke and they dont have to.
Comedians take you with them ws everyone embarks on a journey of a story. Sometimes dark. Sometimes shocking. Sometimes hilarious. The type/style of the story varies but the end goal is the same. To take the crowd on a momentary journey to escape the stress of life.
The joke may have been horrible but it's still an attempt to help escape reality's stress. Not every joke/story will be a homerun. Trial and error is part of being a comedian.
But the biggest problem with people taking issue that joke is something they do to many things in general.
Applying today's standards to something that happened many years ago. When he told that joke/story, it was a completely different period in time then it is now. Back then comedy & comedians pushed way beyond boundaries. Many joke from that time were dark, edgy, disturbing, etc. Obviously they would not be allowed to be told in today's world. But at the time, that's how comedy was. The closest in today's world would be a Comedy Central Roast. But standuo comedy today, these jokes are not allowed. They are a product of their times.
Its not fair to try to cancel a comedian for a bad joke he told years ago. Thats like a job not hiring you because you made in spelling mistake back in high school, and that decision being allowed and valid. Hell, by that standard, our president would be in prison for the racist comments he made years ago. But he's not. And neither should Bobby Lee. He'a a comedian. Telling jokes is what he does. Not everyone will like every joke he tells but thats no reason to cancel him. He may be famous but he still has rights like the rest of us. Freedom Of Spech/Expession.
That wasn't a joke it was a story
Plenty of jokes are told in the form of stories

The difference is that Bobby didn't say it in a joke form at all - no punchline or anything. He said it exactly like someone experiencing immense guilt over doing something terrible, which he should feel. He actually did it. Telling a confessional story like that, in that way, on a call in radio show is way different from a comedian telling jokes on stage. He's not joking. He is a very bad person.
edit: before you type a butthurt response about how i dont get it, save yourself the trouble, i don't read any of them.

I agree. Hes not that good of an actor . He was telling a true story .
First of, this channel is fucking great. I got recommended one of your videos a few days ago and pretty quickly I ran through everything you've put out. Great job overall.
I think Patrice O'Neal said it best, "funny jokes and unfunny jokes come from the same birth. A comedian doesn't know if something is gonna be funny to an audience until he tries it."
Comedians should have an immunity from the audience to say the wildest shit imaginable to attempt to make us laugh.
I think that podcasts have muddied the waters though. One thing is a guy on stage trying to be funny and then a guy on a podcast trying to be funny. On the stage everyone kind of assumes this is not all true, this guy is just trying to make people laugh.
The reason podcasts with comedians especially became so big in the past 10 years is because people enjoyed listening to them have genuine conversations, not just performing up on a stage, telling jokes or made up stories.
The problem with Bobby Lee and a lot of other comedians is that they try to "perform" on podcasts at the same time as having real conversations. At that point their jokes start to get viewed with the same critical lens as their real views and beliefs.
I'm not saying it's right but it's just how it is. The things a comedian says when he's on stage will never be viewed and judged the same way as the things he says off stage.
I think Bobby's story is true, I don't think he made it up. I've heard multiple versions of up over the years and if I had to guess I would bet that it's a real story. He told the story and he wasn't proud of it. But now society has changed and they came for his head so instead of owning it and saying he wasn't proud, he decided the only option he had was to try to use the shield of comedy. Whether it worked for him I don't know.
The other thing, i'm the farthest thing from an sjw but jokes like Segura's where you're talking about kids I just find disgusting and not funny at all. It definitely will make me not like a comedian. I think that talking about kids like that is perfectly fine to be the place where we draw the line.

Where did you find the video of the woman getting on stage at the beginning? I can't find it
Describe Bobby Lee - "I think of a man... And I take away reason and accountability."
Assaulting Bobby is like kicking a cat. He just seems so harmless and defenseless.
Assaulting Bobby vs Assaulting a little girl is a bit different….
@sherezadevergara9440 Yeah, one thing is a bad joke. The other one actually happened.
@@Daniel-ou4fb I'm confused, is Bobby Lee the bad joke?
The Natalie Portman stuff is way worse given that we know
1. She was a child actor, made to shoot scenes that her parents specially vetoed, by a director who waited until her parents weren't on set to shoot them.
2. The plotline in that movie was inspired by Besson's relationship with Maïwenn Le Besco, whom he started dating when she was 15, and who he'd impregnated when she was 16.
3. Besson was credibly accused of rape.
Also there is video footage out there of Lee very obviously sexually assaulting TV hosts on multiple occasions, which he seems to think is also a "joke".
I don't think the Tinjuana story is a factual true story, but i do this Bobby Lee told it because doesn't think it would be a serious matter if it were true.
I think a comedian can attempt to be or appear "brutally honest" as part of their schtick, but they can't put the genie back in the bottle if people form an opinion of them based on that.
He of course should be allowed to continue with his comedy, and people are free to form an opinion of him based on his actions and words.
sounds like the first clip comes from the now defunct podcast DVDASA with David Choe and Asa Akira, not Opie and Anthony?
Who’s the guy talking in the long clip where Bobby explains how hat he did?
I have never found Bobby funny. Not that i find him offensive or think he needs to be cancelled or anything like that i just genuinely don't think he has ever made me laugh. People making fun of him has made my stomach hurt from laughing. He seems like such a loser to me.
Because he is a loser
Exactly ill never get tired of santino abusing him
Correction: the audio clip u play of the story being told is from DVDASA- an early podcast with David choe, not OAA.
Stories and jokes are two different things, Bobby Lee was telling a story whilst everyone else was telling jokes, the fact that you didn't laugh at his story does not mean that he failed as a comedian but that you as the audience failed to notice the difference between the two
Bobby definitly did that, people would come on O&A all the time and talk about prostiution in south america, Patrice was on just before talking about it.
Si
If Segura's punchlines matched his setups i'd get it
He's a Louis CK wannabe, he can be funny but he's completely unoriginal and takes all of his comedic stylings directly from Louis. It's like why would I watch him when I can watch Louis?
Well said
Yeah that's not comedy that's a confession.
If someone's unfunny and inoffensive, then it's easy to dismiss them. If someone is unfunny and offensive, people want to go after them. People need to chill
You’re out here justifying Bobby being with a little girl LMAO!!!! 😂😂😂😂🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
There's no such thing as a comedian going too far, only a joke you don't think is funny.
Best channel since beige frequency
Agree with your assessment on Tom, haha. Man did he turn into a dbag. He used to be my top 5.
I feel like Tom being a douchebag is for comedy reasons and I think he's funnier since he took on this persona. Based on ymh it seems like he realized that that's what was working for him and he leaned in. Even if that's not the case he's really not that much of a dickhead so I'm not mad at it. In my book You're allowed to be an asshole if you're funny about it. Bill burr is also in my top 3 and Tom Segura is also in my top 10, great video!! Subscribing fs
Yeah, his story seems at least somewhat true, that’s the disturbing part (all those other ones are clearly jokes)….guys an idiot for telling it numerous times and now no, I don’t care if he gets “cancelled” (which he won’t so moot point I guess)
Who cares what his story seems like, is it true or not? Do you know?
@@unbroken1010
A man admitting to doing that is everyone’s business at this point you deeply disturbed individual. Seek help p e do.
This is a recording of a David Choe interview.
Not the original O&A clip
The Segura joke is really fuckin' weird to me. Felt kinda out of left field. That being said it's just a comedian telling a joke that didn't land for everyone. I dont understand the whole trying to cancel comedy thing. That's even more weird to me.
Whether the story is true or not, merely to tell a story about having sex with a weeping 12 year old for “entertainment value” is profane. Whether he did it or not that is in the WORST taste.
Is it me or have comedians gotten a little too grimey?
Agreed. Like how are people missing why that's an issue... What's funny about a little girl crying during something like that? Where's the joke supposed to be? It's kind of ridiculous these comedians always have an out too with "it's a joke" even when there's no joke. If he told a story about committing a hate crime decades ago, where it's all "I totally burned a ❌ in a black gay person's yard one time" no one would be so eager to defend that. Defense for these kinds of "jokes" always happen when it's against females. I swear. When it's a female, even a prepubescent one, it's ok because it's a comedian. It's horrid.
Tom segura’s joke was the most chilling imo
Tom Segura is just trying to stay cutting edge by aping Louis C.K.
I did get Bobby’s joke, but I could definitely see how someone would take it seriously. He said it as if it actually happened.
plus, considering his…‘aesthetic deficiency’ I bet he WOULD get himself in that situation
I blieve it because Bobby’s known for being slimy and duplicitous
Curious, was Dave Chappelle buying weed from a baby in the hood at 2 am going too far? Or is that just a funny joke...
Nah that just seems about right for the hood 🤷♂️
I only buy my weed from 8-12 year olds in the hood never met a baby dealer before so it’s gotta be just a joke. Or maybe the mom had the drugs under the baby she was holding and Dave Chappelle just embellish the story as if the baby was the one that gave him the drugs.
Good counter argument!
My favorite joke was when he was saying he didn't think Michael Jackson actually did the shit in the never land documentary and even if he did... *shrugs* ya know? It's Michael Jackson! 😂
@@ErinJeanette lol exactly was a good JOKE.
I think people forget they don't have to listen to someone. Now a days there are plenty of options of things to watch but people just want to virtue signal.
It's an ego thing. Growing up there was plenty of bands and shows I didnt like i just TURNED THE DIAL. Now social media has convinced every1 that their opinion matters. They think they are the Arbiter of Who is Allowed 2 do something. Its narcissism at its highest level.
didnt Tom steal that joke from Stanhope?
" I'm an American don't touch me "🤣
What do I think? What do _I_ think?? I think that you are using terms like "snowflake" and "free speech" appropriately, and furthermore, I think you aren't propagating lazy narratives to support a predecided conclusion, and I appreciate these things.
