Yes it starts to become a little more opaque the more you lay it on. No it never really gets close to black. It can look very dark brown in muted light, but if you hit it with stage lighting for instance, it is brown and still translucent.
yeah i thought that was the case. Well, fantastic job! I am going to be starting a project this summer but I'm trying to collect as much information/do as much reserach as possible before beginning.
Yes..all correct. Regarding #3, The burst paint is lacquer. It's the same clear lacquer used throught the entire process, it just has 10% brown dye added to it.
Thanks. It's true that UV will fade many dyes, especially aniline dyes. Some people like to use aniline dyes that fade easily under UV exposure though... for example, somebody wanting to spray a vintage looking burst will actually spray a bright red aniline burst, then expose it to the sun so that it fades to an "ice tea" shade. I mostly use metal complex dyes for bursts and trans finishes, they are very UV resistant (lightfast).
could ya please tell us what spray gun your using and what size needle is in it it looks like a fuji what setting on the turbin are ya at thanks so much for sharing
if you have a air compressor, spray guns are not too expensive. if you dont have the air compressor, use rattle cans from the auto parts. they are usually higher quality in the spray heads and actual paint inside, than what you find at the typical hardware store.
@TomboLP I thinned the lacquer 2 parts lacquer 1 part thinner. But that all depends on what type of lacquer, what type of gun, air pressure, cap and needle size....so this really doesn't mean anything to anyone else. If I had used my DeVilbiss EGA gun I would have had to thin the lacquer more. The dye was added to the lacquer and then thinned because the dye itself thins the lacquer somewhat.
beautiful work Freddy .. love watching and learning.. how can I get a Fender decal for a strat build that is copy free.. one they don't use anymore? I herd you can get them but I cant find any info on it
so im painting a body and want to do a tobacco burst, please correct me if i mess up 1.spray body w/ lacquer 2. 10 to 1 ration of laxquer w/ translucent yellow paint 3. spray burst. do you mix the burst paint w/ lacquer???? 4. spray w/ lacquer
What would you suggest to use as a sprayer for someone who just wants to do some finishing on a couple of Warmoth Guitar bodies? I've got a Les Paul body that I want to silverburst, and an explorer body that I want to satin finish.
Very impressive. With your camera (not a lot guitar builders have HD quality videos on RUclips) a tutorial for how to build a guitar from scratch would be great!! :) (preferably a strat or tele)
Hey I'm buying a guitar (either red fiesta strat or 2 tone burst strat) and i want to paint the body black... doing a gilmour tribute, how would you suggest i paint the guitar? what are the steps involved? broad question i know but idk anything about this stuff
I've seen many of your videos but just came across this one. Looks like you may be spraying at your home in the garage? If so, just curious about your setup there. These finishes look awesome. Know your'e most likely swamped with work but a video about this would be much appreciated! Cheers!
Thanks Jeff, yeah I sprayed that one at home in the garage. Honestly I don't remember why...maybe my other rig was down for repair or something. The gun is a Fuji HVLP with a turbine system.
well, its a bit different process, since you cant "thin" stuff thats already mixed in a can, but if your careful you can get a similar result. a silver burst should be very easy to get with cans.
This is intimidatingly perfect spraying - if I tried that, there'd be a huge mess! Time to practice... Can I ask what ratio of lacquer to thinner you use - and does the dye get added to the pure lacquer, or to the mix?
Can you tell me what spray gun and size compressor you use. I've never sprayed anything beyond cans before and am looking to buy an LVLP gun but not sure what size compressor I would need to do this type of work without issues. Beautiful work !! Thanks in advance. Please advise if you have any info that can help me.
+Jim Munhall In this video I'm using a Fuji HVLP gun and a turbine, no compressor. But I have other guns (Iwata HVLP and also regular DeVilbiss) that use a compressor. If you get a compressor get at least a 5 gallon tank.
+FreddysFrets I just ordered a Neiko LVLP gun and also oil/water seperator and locking pressure gauge/regulator. Thanks for your help. Of course I will use a few practice pieces before trying a guitar :-) I have a cheap Yamaha Pacifica I am going to do something with and then maybe donate it to a charity.
Sorry to be a burden but can you link me to the type of lacquer, I was looking and there is about 10 different types. I am new to guitar building so these things are different for me.
Hey Freddy, just about to burst my Strat. What's the secret to a smooth blend with no obvious overspray? My touch up gun doesn't seem to atomise as finely as yours. Cheers, Tom
Hi Tom, the secret is to make sure the dye/lacquer ratio is not too strong. Much better gradient when you have to do multiple passes to achieve the depth of colour you want.
FreddysFrets legend thank you so much. I used a 10:1 ratio but with my dye I think it's too much because the lacquer is totally opaque! The woods on your guitar are unreal btw
more or less, i would suggest practicing the technique on a scrap of wood before you hit up the actual guitar, so you can see how quickly the burst color builds and how far away you need to hold the can to get the fade effect you want on the edges.
The label on my jug of brown is gone but I've got the red dye gallon jug in front of me...this is what's on the label: MLC#: 36-1200 9800511101 M/SPRAY TINTER RED 4L LOT 9305047
I bought a Gibson Tobacco burst and wanted to see how they do it ...Very cool thanks for the inside look 😎
Nice work on the spray there, steady hands. Good track too, nice memory of your Brother.
Freddy, my friend, you are an inspiring individual and a great artist.
Love your work.
that hunk of maple is gorgeous. nice job dude, and great song as well
you spray like a machine! love the ash!
The song is awesome, really cool guitar as well :D
Any idea what the song is?
Yes it starts to become a little more opaque the more you lay it on. No it never really gets close to black. It can look very dark brown in muted light, but if you hit it with stage lighting for instance, it is brown and still translucent.

Beautiful Tele Freddy.

I did the brown burst later in the day after the yellow.

I really enjoyed the song - reminded me a bit of wide mouth mason

Took me a while to realise that was a painting behind you
How long do you let each coat cure? Looks great by the way
beautiful work Freddy .. love watching and learning.. how can I get a Fender decal for a strat build that is copy free.. one they don't use anymore? I herd you can get them but I cant find any info on it
Thanks,
It's a Pratt and Lambert medium brown alcohol dye.
I have never used the stew mac drops but I can say that this dye is stays transparent even when I use lots of it.
Ok. Thanks for the help.
You make it look so easy! I'm struggling with aerosols at the moment.
Yes, several clear coats of lacquer on top to seal it all in.
Gorgeous
Sorry Joe, No experience with that kind of decal. It's not just a vinyl decal is it? does it need water to separate?
i'd like to see a vid of your paint booth area if you have the time? How do you keep the paint from running when spraying so close to the body? thanks
does the tobacco brown application get very close to black and more opaque with multiple passes?
Are you able to do something like this with spray paint or only use an airbrush?
Thanks!
Nitro-cellulose lacquer from Mohawk. For the burst I add alcohol-based dyes to the nitro.
so im painting a body and want to do a tobacco burst,
please correct me if i mess up
1.spray body w/ lacquer
2. 10 to 1 ration of laxquer w/ translucent yellow paint

I too lost my younger brother. Nice vid.

@@FreddysFrets Thanks Freddy. Please keep the videos coming. Love the channel!
which lacqher do you recommend more. Or what should you use when. Stringed instrument lacquer or vinyl sealer lacquer
how long do you wait between coats?

Could you give me any tips of doing a tobacco burst as in colors and spraying method?
Art and Passion....:)))
+malik haylou Cheers!
when your done doing the burst, do you spray a coat of laquer on top?
@macduffeecam
Thanks Cam!

+FreddysFrets I do have a 6 gallon pancake compressor was just wondering if it would be enough to run an LVLP for this type of work.
+Jim Munhall that should be just fine for a LVLP gun.
+FreddysFrets I just ordered a Neiko LVLP gun and also oil/water seperator and locking pressure gauge/regulator. Thanks for your help. +FreddysFrets hvlp gun that is
Awesome! I like the song too, sorry about your brother
Awesome, you are a painting wizard =) what is the dry time between the yellow and then adding the brown?
Her Freddy, what paint gun are you using? Thanks!
Well for actual spraying, it's the same prcoess?
deepest sympathy for your tragic loss
@irawangani1
hey Irawan...sure thing! I've shipped a custom made guitar to Hong Kong before. Prepare yourself for shipping costs though ;)
What kind of paints do you use?
Sorry to be a burden but can you link me to the type of lacquer, I was looking and there is about 10 different types. I am new to guitar building so these things are different for me.

@skub1234
Thanks skubs! I'm sure someone will be twangin' it soon :)
hmmmm....thinking of ordering one if you could ship one to Hongkong freddy.... :-)
Or you can order nitro lacquer from stewmac or reranch in rattle cans
@manthony6594
Thank You
So who was the music?
Ok, so just do the same process? I might be going and getting one tomorrow.
No gloves on ? Isn't it toxic ?
I don't spray my hands.
Yeah I don't wanna ruin a $300 piece of mahogany.
belle guitare, bien que je trouve que la couche de vernis st trop épaisse...
would be interesting to see the result! ???
i KNOW!!! damn postal/courier services... maybe i shouldnt take the missus for a xmas holiday then...
one should think you have done that before =)

Here's the finished guitar: ruclips.net/video/zmji_EnW5jQ/видео.html
Search my channel for "the blaggard"
It’s fun to drill a hole in ash.
Give a guitar an ash hole.

You need a nerve pill !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
