In this video, we discuss disassembly of the most commonly encountered military surplus rifle bolt mechanisms. Keeping your bold mechanism clean is important for continued reliable function of the firearm, especially if a primer is punctured and gases leak back into the body of the bolt. Disassembly of the bolt may also be necessary for the purposes of adding or changing custom parts or for refinishing work.

Iraqvet, you won't believe this but you just saved the day. Monday I told a buddy that I had forgotten to put the safety on when disassembling my Belgian Mauser. He had just seen this video, and e mailed it to me. Thanks for the very timely video! And thanks Pat for the heads up.
When I was 7 years old I took the bolt on my dads Arisaka apart . He freaked. I had to show him how I did it. your vid reminded me of that. I had forgotten (I'm 61 now) all about doing that. Thankyou for reminding me of that childhood memory !
I wanted to thank you for doing what you do. I just got a santa fe field mauser (30-06) & wanted to clean it up good before my wife takes it away from me till Christmas. I wanted to take apart the bolt and clean up all the cosmoline & gunk hampering the movement of the bolt loosen up the super tight safety. Well sadly I skipped the step of putting the safety flag in the center position, thankfully watching this video I was able to recock the bolt by using the rim of the cartridge like you showed. Eric you saved me lots of time & embarrassment, I so appreciate what you do with your channel for all of us in the 2A community.
love working on guns, no formal training but I own a lot of guns so I always detail strip them just for fun, the hardest bolt I had to remove was finding out how to get the bolt out of a model 52 Winchester but when you figure it out it seemed so easy, then but it took a lot of research for old guns to find out, man do I love the internet
This from a new Mauser owner, Thank you. I made the mistake of de-cocking the bolt and was able to cock it again thanks to your video. I love all of you videos, short and to the point. No mindless babble. Thanks again.
Sooo easy, yet they have been in use for so many years. Simple yet effective. Thanks for the video.
I'm not a big bolt gun type guy so I found that educational for sure. The arisaka bolt surprised me. Thanks!
Great video Eric! Here it is 6 1/2 years later and people are still watching and learning. More gunsmithing videos please, especially these old mil surp rifles!
I am a recent C&R collector and these vids are great. Thanks for the great knowledge you have with these Relics
Music is just right! Don't change a thing. You're really understandable so it's no problem at all.
Just installed the 26 lb Wolff spring and it works great thanks of the advice.
I like the music it stops it being so plain and adds a bit of professional quality
Hey Eric , great job on this video! Been shooting over 30+ years I'm still learning new stuff! Keep up the great work you and berry do for us all!!!!!
When I put my Mosin bolt back together, I use the largest notch on the little tool to adjust the bolt to the right length (It's the notch closest to the loop). Speaking of that tool, the loop is great for taking off the bayonet if you're having a hard time with it.
Nicely done. Thank you. Nice to see them side by side. That Arisaka bolt is really something- wish they were all that simple. It is a slightly later design though, so they had the advantage of seeing what had gone before.
Tanks Eric, I'm glad you showed the reassembly of the bolts and my Mosin I having that exact problem you described with the hard to close bolt, I'm looking forward to the next video!
Just got my fist Mosin-Nagant.
This helped me immensely.
thank you IV8888
I'm very glad that you made this video! Last Saturday, I was taking apart the bolt of my Turkish Mauser as part of a restoration project. I accidentally turned the safety to "fire" and I couldn't re-assemble the bolt without recocking the cocking piece. Needless to say, it was hard to do and I ended up with a huge blood blister on my thumb, which I still have! Hopefully nobody else makes the same mistake that I did, lol. ;)
I like these videos. I think you helped me disassemble my 35 yo Stevens 30-06. That i know has never been cleaned. Thanks Eric.
Wow, even I learned something watching this and I've been in the firearms industry for almost a decade now, plus a military armorer. I had no idea what that slot on my Mauser's cocking piece was for. Thanks and keep up the good work shipmate!
I look forward to these videos of yours, and the whole crew a lot.
Thanks for taking the time to make and post them.
Thank you for this video i plan on buying a Mosin this summer and I know this will help when i first get it to clean it.
I have a Mosin and a Mauser, so this is great. I saved it for later reference. Thanks, Eric!
As soon as I finished liking this video I ordered an extra power spring for my Mauser. Good stuff Eric. Not every video needs an explosion in it.
Great video ! They aren't dry at all, for me they are very informative.
Great video. Always good to a potential mil-surp buyer to know how to strip the bolt on these guns.
Just faved this one Eric , very useful and informative one stop shopping on common bolt to disassy. Going to come in handy as I plan on collecting various bolt action rifles. Would've liked to see a Carcano included. But, I figured it out myself in like 2 mins. They're all so sweet and simple.. good job.
Thanks for taking the time and educating us on these bolts! I enjoyed it.
Excellent demonstration. Thanks
I really like the gunsmithing how - to vids. These are very professional looking quality. Keep up the excellant work
Thanks for another great video. These videos are very informative for everyone. Especially for some one like me is planning on buying a mosin sometime in the near future. I would like to see a video from you guys on what to look for when you are buying a mosin. Thanks again for all of your great videos.
Thank you so much for your how to videos, they are the highlight of my week. Keep um coming!
One of my favorite channels. Thank you, Eric.
Excellent and easy to follow how-to video. Thanks!
As always one of the best and detailed videos out there...
Regarding the mosin difficulties you mentioned at the end, I'll be waiting for that, because I've had those troubles.
For the mosin bolt, i actually use the connector bar as a wrench to unscrew the firing pin from the bolt body, instead of putting pressure down on it
thanks for the information,i appreciate what you guys teach
Excellent. I needed this exact video to take apart my Mauser bolt.
Great vid Eric! Keep up the "how to"s, we love them.
Good refresher course, thanks
That advanced Mosin trigger job? This"How to" series is so good, keep 'em coming.
Great vid. It's especially helpful for the Mauser bolt, being more complex. My FFL guy said not to bother disassembling the bolt during cleaning, but you've shown that the small spring and pin can get pretty dirty. Also, setting that Mosin protrusion might be the most important thing you said in the video. Puncturing a primer could flat out ruin your day. Safety first. Thanks. Gotta love that Arisaka bolt. ...Actually I have all three rifles, and they're all great.
how to vids are the best keep them up you guys do good work
Last bolt was neat. Keep em coming...
Great video with very easy to follow instructions. I'd really like to see a bolt disassembly video for the M95 steyer, keep the how to videos coming.
I am Japanese and man that Arisaka bolt disassembly part made me laugh - god funniest thing I have seen for rifle related videos. Maybe its how it all dropped out.
2022 and this video helped me out with my Mosin and K98/Gewehr 98 thanks a lot!!!
Great ! Thank you very much!
Greetings and all the best from Germany!
Enjoyed the video. Looking forward to the Mosin bolt "slap" fix video.
Fantastic video Eric. I own all of these besides the Arisaka 6.5. I'd love to have one but it just hasn't been high enough on my buying scale yet. Either way, I love these videos and the knowledge you spread. I'm beyond happy to have gained the insight on my K31 bolt. It is by far one of my favorite classic milsurps to shoot and I wasn't completely positive on the field strip of the bolt. But now I'm totally sure of the operation. Thanks again for all that you and yours do for our sport. :-)
Great video, you are an excellent teacher, can't wait for the next one
love these how to vids cant wait for the mosin full glass bed vid
Superb !!! Keep up with your videos, they rock !!!
I wish I didn't already have so many of the "must have" firearms because I would like to have bought many of them from y'all. Thanks for all the videos and please keep coming! Gun gripe suggestion: people who claim "accidental" when its factually a negligent discharge.
Thanks for another great video!
Outstanding and very informative. Please do semi-auto milsurp bolt disassembly in a future video. Thanks Eric
Can't wait for the next Mosin vid. I'm having that same problem, to a point.
These aren't dry at all. I know the some of the videogame generation may need explosions to keep their interest, but These how too and your reloading videos are my favorite.
Well done lad. Keep em coming.
For the mauser bolt disassembly, you can use the takedown hole in the stock, being careful not to scratch it of course.
love the how to video's Eric! Thanks Bud!
Id like to see a video about s&w revolvers that covers all the common types of custom work people do on them such as installing a new barrel cutting a new forcing cone ect
The way I have always taken my Mosin bolt apart is by taking it out, put the bolt in the safe position, then reassemble, put back into firing position.
Excellent vid bro...really well done with closeup detail...thanx - I've got all three of the rifles in the case of the M/N & Mauser - many of 'em...Don't pay no nevermind to the folks complainin' about the music!!! Just fine by me!!! Love it!!! Again, Thanx
CB in FL
Great video guys
Music is good Eric! Keep up the good work.
The how to vids rock!
Great video, I actually learnt something, thanks!
Flexing that Finn mosin at the end.
music is fine with me, keep up the good work.
You know you a gun nut when you actually find this entertaining lol
Thanks for making these awesome videos!
Thanks for the info. You guys Rock!
Love the how to videos!!
Excellent~!!
Keep these instructional videos coming, friend~!!!
Thanks for the video, now I know how to do this properly when I get my Mosin Nagant (Tula 1936) and my K98k sniper. :)
I love how easy it is to clean the bolt of my arisaka. Now if I can just find some ammo to get it dirty with.
very informative
great video
Thanks. Your video helped me clean my 41 k 98. Clear and easy to understand. Much appreciated. Thank God it only holds 5 rounds or they might ban this too.
Thanks! Great vid!
As a testament to how common these three bolts are in the milsurp world, these happen to be the three milsurp rifles I have. The mosin and K31, and my mauser action is a vz24 hah.
I learned something. Thanks.
The mauser actually saved my life, I have one and this actually helps a lot. Could you make a tuning video about it?
Thank you, I did learn a lot, and I did enjoy the background music if it was a tad louder at parts
I look at all these military bolts and I find it funny how simple the Arisaka's is to dissemble, not trying to troll or anything but I look at that Mauser and just laugh, don't get me wrong great rifle.
Really enjoyed your video on these old mil surp rifles. I have several, K98 Mauser, 303 British Enfield, Mosin Nagant and a Italian Carcano. I like the old WW 2 battle rifles. Would of been nice if you would of had a 303 British Enfield bolt on the bench when you did the disassembly video. Great videos keep them up.
you always make a good video..
Great video, music sounds fine to me.
i was looking for a video about guns, but ended up here, with this one on Jewellery ;-)
Great video!!!!!, thanks.
I vote for music. It keeps things lively. Great video by the way.
thanks for sharing!!
thanks for the video i used a video like this when i first cleaned my M48 wish i had this video then haha i made a real mess almost lost an eye when getting the firing pin out it ended up half way in my wall. I wont talk about what happened when i decocked the bolt also man learning is hard
wow. thank you for this.
Fair enough, that makes sense for a general video.
they should do a full disasembly and reasembly for a 10/22 and how to attach differnt optics and stocks
u rock man! thanks!
this ia a great vid!! thanks....!
If only i had seen this a few weeks ago. Tore the top off of a craftsman flat-head screwdriver trying to disassemble a mosin bolt. HAH!!! Thanks for the vid Eric.
Haha u just saved me from reading as I forgot how to disassemble my Mauser bolt...it needs a winchester style safety on it
