When the show first aired it was explained. that if the Korean couple were speaking to each other we would get subtitles. If they were speaking in front of others we would not. The reason being that we are supposed to be as clueless as the rest of the survivors.

For a show that came out 3 years after 9/11, to make one of the main characters an Iraqi soldier was a brave move for the writers/network.
Sayid is one of my favourite characters.

Not just Iraqi, but Saddam Hussein's Republican Guard, who they recently captured on 13 December 2003; the pilot started filming in March and aired in Sept of 2004 - so the public awareness was VERY recent.

One thing that I find LOST did incredibly well was to write each character in a way that makes each and every one feel very unique.
Other shows have characters that use the same vocabulary, the same mannerisms, and have similar attitudes and behaviors as everyone else. This is probably due to poor directing.
But in LOST every character has their very distinct vocabulary and manner of speech, and very distinct personalities. No two characters speak alike, or act alike. I find this more noticeable in LOST than any other series I have watched.

“Republican Guard” was the name of the top division of Iraq and Saddam Hussain’s army.
(The “enemy” of US/coalition forces in the Gulf War)
The war was very extensively televised, with news reports 24/7, and the Republican Guard was mentioned very frequently in the news.

Hasn't this changed in recent years? I remember that back then a lot of shows just have what is more or less a bog standard episode as a pilot, but a lot of modern shows try (and often succeed) to hook you immediately with the first episode. I sure know a lot that immediately impressed me and where the first episode was among the top episodes of the first season.

Carmen, I'd like to add something that hopefully will de-stress you a bit about LOST. Yes, there are things that are shown during the show that may or may not mean something further down the road (but lots of things that mean nothing as well). I think that many of the "Losties" are scaring you into writing EVERYTHING down, to the point that you may sacrifice your enjoyment of watching a good mystery and where it will unfold. Losties also have a history of spoiling things for reactors but dropping not-so-subtle hints and spoilers because they can't help themselves. My advice? Learn everyone's name and just enjoy the show. Losties watched it that way their first time, don't let them ruin it for you.

    • @letsrock1729

Completely agree. I don't get this obsession that many people have about reactors writing things down while they're watching the show. It's not a school assignment. Personally, taking notes would have totally ruined the whole experience for me.

I was more pointing out how outside influence can colour how you watch something
Terry was on Earth 2 as a mysterious hologram contact with a surprise reveal.
His Starfleet Admiral wasn't a good guy.
His Navy Captain/Admiral Boone on JAG had been court-martialed and then acquitted but was a good guy.
      He became antagonistic in Millennium
He was in Harsh Realm, a General in the simulation, and he wanted to destroy the real world
The only good role I saw him in was in Alias
The scar just added to my preconceived notion. Since I associated him with his scar, he got linked to Lion King's Scar because I had a 4-year-old who adored Disney, and the song would keep playing in my head.
Because of my biases, I was always suspicious and looking for deceit, even though he only mentioned a secret.
IF I didn't know his older roles and didn't have a kid who was constantly watching Disney and the song playing in my mind, I could have linked him to Bald and Picard. That would have made my watching completely different.

It's sad that GOT fans have bullied/traumatized so many reactors into taking notes. You don't need to write anything down. We all watched and understood this show way back when without writing anything down. It's a TV show, not homework. It's just sucks to see reactors furiously writing instead of leaning back and enjoying the show.
GOT is a uniquely dense adaptation of a uniquely dense series of books, so perhaps it made sense at some point to jot down some notes. But GOT is unique.
Just watch and enjoy the show and trust your brain to remember and connect dots. Also, again, this is a TV show. They will expressly remind you of anything that needs to be remembered.

The full distress signal can be heard as an Easter Egg on the Season 1 dvd (without actors talking over it etc). This is not a spoiler, it is the message which played in this episode, and the only other place it can be heard properly besides this episode is the Easter Egg on the dvd.
And we're not going to get a better translation than Shannon's on the show. She is the survivor who speaks French.

    More suggestions:
    - I don't recommend binging too many episodes in a single day. You need to let some developments sink and let your mind register them for long term to enjoy the show more because you both need to remember details later and you need to know and identify/emphatize more with the characters. Neither will come easily if you binge many episodes in one sitting. 2 episodes is ok in a single day or maybe 3 at most but I definitely don't recommend more. Especially because you're watching it alone. Also, if you're doing your own editing it will help a lot to remember stuff but if your editing is too behind of your watching sessions, then it won't be as helpful.
    - Taking notes is cool and definitely useful but keep your eyes on the screen as much as possible. You don't need to write down everything right away.
    - Try to include all key moments of an episode in your edit, even if you don't say anything in that moment, a silent confused face is also a reaction. We're watching these mainly for those moments. (Not that you've edited out key scenes so far, just general suggestion)
    - Researching "republican guard" online was a slightly risky choice. You need to think twice when you choose to google something again.

I'm on your side but relax. It's just character names in this case. It's not that big a deal.

@@youdyed Disagree. Everyone should be allowed to enjoy the show without any prior knowledge of anything whatsoever. And that includes character's names.

Wtf is wrong with you? Why do you keep giving her people's names!? Let her find out for herself!

Please understand that she wants to experience the show for herself. The answers are coming and she'll get them if she's paying attention. We don't have to provide info that the show already provides. Especially if it's information that has yet to happen. That's called spoilers. Thanks for your consideration on future comments.

Et pourquoi tu ne dis pas que l'île fourmille de robots mécaniques laissés par des extraterrestres tant que tu y es. Stp, réfraine-toi. Merci.

Guys, I get where you're coming from, I hate spoilers. But it's just a character's name. And there's nothing significant about their name, like it is with some specific characters. Relax with this whole policing thing a little. It's not the end of the world.

    • @bafmd
      @bafmd 2 месяца назад +1

@@youdyed I agree, not a big spoiler. Definitely not "the end of the world". But it is a spoiler, and spoilers are spoilers no matter how big or small. People should get to watch the show the same way you did, which means at this point certain character names weren't yet revealed. It happens far too often that people who are willing to leave spoiler comments will leave spoiler comments. Here it's just an early series character name, later it's casual mention of something huge. Nobody is "policing", but just trying to keep the experience pure for new viewers. Can you remember what this show was like the very first you watched it? I can, and at this point I didn't know certain character's names.
Calling out a spoiler comment is intended to just help the commenter think before hitting the send button. It's not meant to hurt feeling or create silly internet debates. A simple rule about spoilers is: if you're about to comment on something that hasn't been revealed yet (anything that takes place in the future) it is a spoiler and shouldn't be mentioned.

Do you think you can try and articulate your points and thoughts, without using the word “like” every 5 seconds?
