  • Hey Knights! Welcome to our BLACK MIRROR Season 6: Beyond The Sea reaction. Two astronauts on a distant mission are able to live their domestic lives on Earth, including being with their loved ones, vicariously through robot doppelgangers who are controlled by them...yeah what could go wrong!?
    This episode was fantastic and the ending will stick with us for a very long time as all good Black Mirror episodes do. Starring Aaron Paul as Cliff Stanfield, Josh Hartnett as David Ross and Kate Mara as Lana Stanfield all of their performances in this are outstanding. The entire episode could've easily gone the cliché route but instead the writers take a turn when we least expect it.
    We hope that you enjoy our commentary as we react and post reaction discussion.

    I like how everyone thought (including myself) David would kill Cliff and take his body. But we all forgot one big plot point, its a TWO MAN SHIP!!! Which means if one dies the other wouldn't be able to run the ship alone pretty much killing yourself.

    17:59 Obviously ignoring the hindsight, I think I would let him borrow my link, despite the red flags.
    It's not even a question of if it's the right thing to do, or to show kindness to a person who's suffering. At this point, it's about survival.
    My real body is stuck in space with the one guy who can bring us back both alive. He has no human interaction except for the one day in the week I have to perform my physical, and the few times there is an issue I need to fix. Even if his family was not murdered in front of him, there is no way he'd last 4 more years at this rate. And my survival depends on his mental health.

    • @OfficialMediaKnights
      @OfficialMediaKnights  Год назад +5

      You make an excellent point! There certainly is a very interesting dynamic of morality vs survival - having a healthy sense of suspicion though, is a good thing, I believe. Especially considering that Cliff has a family he needs to worry about, and David is visibly unstable from the beginning. It's definitely a difficult question to answer that requires a lot of nuance!

    This was a great episode. But it's one of those things where you have to be able to control how you talk to people in certain situations especially when you don't know the person's mental state. It's like when someone beeps the horn at you at a traffic light. You could either decide to not react. Or you could get out or make some kind of gesture to that person that could lead to you being killed. Or if someone is robbing your house. Do you go downstairs and tell them how crazy they are? Do you call them a low life. No you call the cops.

    • @OfficialMediaKnights
      @OfficialMediaKnights  Год назад +2

      You’re absolutely right when it comes to behavior in a real life scenario! Safety is first! Never let ego get the best! But in the case of this episode! I’ve watched it a few times and I think although what Aaron Paul’s character said was wrong and probably played a part. Josh Hartnett’s character had already made up his mind. There’s very subtle acting that gives us a hint when the idea clicks in his mind. And it’s during the “you don’t even know what you have” line or something among those lines.
      His body language and demeanor changes and if you’ve watched the episode and know the twist it’s like you can see the idea slowly come together.
      What Aaron Paul’s character said just really sealed the deal. But I don’t think he really wanted to go down and apologize in the first place.

    Oh wow. I probably shouldn't have done two episodes today cause I definitely feel that Black Mirror effect on me now, but this was fantastic and I wanted to see the reaction for this too asap. Messed-up and extremely atmospheric, I really enjoy space stuff too and this was a very interesting concept from the start and that just got more and more intriguing and bleak and fascinating, which is what every space thing should have lol. Very intriguing mix of concepts here, and just. Wow. Getting to watch both Aaron Paul and Josh Hartnett doing some acting masterclasses in this (Aaron Paul was 2 in 1!), and the alternate universe take on the '60s that's still very....'60s. The juxtaposition of the color grading with the couples at the beginning is so well done. I think the soundtrack reminds me a lot of the 2017 Prey game, and so does the atmosphere when they're up there. A very complex one, with extremely layered characters. Like my gut reaction to Aaron Paul's character was very wary, and continued to be so due to his overall way, but then that fight they have and he does get show his emotion and we get more of a glimpse into who he is...and obviously Josh Hartnett's...well. Quite a switch from my initial read of him, which makes sense but I wonder if this is all the trauma or if there was something more to him under that golden sheen at the start. Very very very interesting. I've really enjoyed all three episodes I've seen so far, this one is one of the haunting ones that stick.

  • @monil2447

    Sorry for this loooooooooong comment. This episode is all about human interactions.
    First, the original French version of Beyond the Sea is the one Shannon sang to Sayid in Lost at the start of their romance. So it's a romantic thing but also, maybe, an illustration of strangers going towards each other.
    Then, the second song in French (the singer is a Belgian legend of the 1950s and 1960s) says: "If you only possess love, my friend, you hold the whole world in your hands".
    The ending also reminds me of a French thing. In the play by the philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre, Huis Clos (Behind Closed Doors), three individuals find themselves, once dead, locked together in the same room forever. They have nothing in common and hate each other. "Hell is other people" is the key phrase of the play.
    Love is everything and therefore you have to reach out to others, unlike Cliff, but David on his side is too sociable: he likes to be adored like a star, he exposes himself proudly, does not protect himself and does not not protect his family, but others can be a danger.
    Finally, we need those we don't like to survive. David and Cliff are interdependent and stuck with each other behind closed doors for 4 endless years. Cliff first lent his link because he needs David to stay mentally and physically healthy. Finishing the episode on Beyond the Sea may mean that they will have to live together and cooperate despite what happens, like strangers who depend on each other.
    OK, I'm going all over the place it seems... Finally, the way you see the metaphor of working all week until the weekend, Ari, is pretty pessimistic. Can't we do a job that we love and sometimes meet future true friends there? On the other hand, I have an idealistic view of work and I quit all my jobs after 2 or 3 years because my bosses suck LOL

    • @OfficialMediaKnights
      @OfficialMediaKnights  Год назад

      Loved the fun facts! It’s good to know a little bit more of context through what the songs were saying. And yes! There’s only two possibilities with the ending. They left it up to us to decide. We both have different views on the outcome! Ari believes that Cliff would’ve definitely k*led David shortly after we cut to black. Denise believes that Cliff would try to ride it out until they’re back home. And then maybe devise a plan to get back at him. Also yeah…I know it may be a little pessimistic. But reality sometimes can be a bit harsh. There’s a lot of people stuck doing a job out of responsibility for bills or family. It’s pure survival. And then of course there’s many lucky people that get to fall in love with what they do! But we’ve all been there at some point in life where we feel trapped by an endless cycle/routine. We definitely feel you when you say you quit frequently because of your bosses - very few things are as suffocating as working somewhere the leadership is weak or warped with egotistical wants. This is where your mentioned quote does come in - Hell is other people. And all we can do is face up to reality and make the changes we can because we owe it to ourselves to live the best life we can, appreciating the ones we love and who love us because if this episode shows us anything it’s that life is fleeting and fragile, and can be turned upside down, even by those you have helped.

      No no...We've been asking ourselves the exact same question. It comes down to this: if it was the other way around we wouldn't have an episode 😂 Maybe it could be justified by "they need a specific amount of energy to charge the replicas which would simply not be viable on the spaceship" But they never really gave us any limitations when it comes to how they work except "they charge in a chair looking thing"

      Think of it like this. If there is an error with their replicas for whatever reason on earth, then the only down side would them not being able to see their families for some number of years. We sort of get a reason in the very beginning when David tells that fan the mission is about "sustaining life," but if they just EQUIPPED THE ROBOTS WITH SENSORS they could tell if conditions were habitible for humans without risking lives!
      Also, why doesn't Cliff call someone from down on Earth when he discovers his family dead?

Throughout this reaction I noticed so many predictions being made and "I know they are going to" phrases being blurted out. The BEST reactions are those that come natural WITHOUT predictions because YOU DON'T KNOW. That's what we as an audience look forward to. Even if you don't know because it is a "first time" it taints the freshness of the feelings and words you say WHEN an action or scene occurs that's surprising. Thank you, guys for your BM reactions.

      @@OfficialMediaKnights😂- True, ill just say this- Black Mirror hit hard this release with the first 3 episodes. Sometimes they have one, maybe two good ones a season. They came to play this year, and I’m all about it. I hope you two are well 😊❤

      Can’t wait for Loch Henry! These 2 episode have been wild! They understood what the audience wanted from Black Mirror and they delivered. 3 out of 5 ep being good is a win in our eyes! We are doing great! Wishing you the best weekend ever ❤️

    18:37 also Cliff's fault. His relationship with his wife wasn't very good, he kept ignoring her.

    • @OfficialMediaKnights
      @OfficialMediaKnights  Год назад +1

      Can definitely see that. He never let himself be vulnerable around her - remember his reaction when she told him that David cried and he incredulously asked if he did it in front of her? That tells us a lot about Cliff...

      @sheilaburns8977 Год назад

      @@OfficialMediaKnights I don't think it was Cliff's "fault". During the episode you see that Cliff was more of an introverted, closeminded religious man, and maybe too stringent. Perhaps he felt he could not fully interact with his wife when his consciousness was in a "plastic" body and, therefore, he could not express emotional/physical feelings to/with her. Perhaps if he felt this way, he should never have taken on such a mission. At any rate, initially I was so sad for David, but at the end after he murdered Cliff's family, I felt that David had crossed over to being horrible judging by the evil smirk he had on his face when he kicked out the chair for Cliff. So very upsetting.

      I too was so upset by what happened in this episode, Josh's family at the beginning of the episode and then Aaron's family at the end. I have to say I did not like the evil smirk on Josh's face as he pushed that chair out towards Aaron.

    As great as this was, I wish he *didn’t* kill them. Like what if it was red paint and he was faking him out, just to give him a glimpse of what he feels like. Then maybe he’d understand- Of course I get that David was insane, but he was generally a pretty nice guy about the whole thing. Despite being like twice Cliff’s size, he didn’t try anything physical on him or forcefully use his replica or anything.
