Odyssey really is an incredible game, and the more time passes the more I love it. It feels like peak Nintendo, every element is working together to create something truly special. And yeah that Jump Up Superstar festival was so amazing for the first time. Great video!

Linearity in Mario games is something that I don’t mind, but the sandbox style of odyssey really helped to reinvigorate my love for 3D Mario. Before that point my enjoyment for the franchise was just kinda existing, and not much else. Even so, I do hope they make a brand new Mario game and not an odyssey 2 because the change of gameplay is what made odyssey so good in the first place.
yeah, i like sunshine or galaxy as much as anyone else (especially with galaxy being a childhood favorite of mine), but to me they weren’t as exciting from an exploratory angle. odyssey not only allows you to go off the beaten path more often than both of those games (which is more in line with how 64 handled its challenges), but rewards you handsomely for it.
and while i wouldn’t mind an odyssey 2 as much, it would also be cool if the next mainline mario game was unique in a way that is refreshing for the player (much as odyssey was for 3d world players).
It's weird to think that there are only two Mario games that are really about freedom and exploration. Mario 64 does give you specific missions, but it does let you do them out-of-order and often exploration can get you to a star you weren't expecting to find, and Mario Odyssey's levels are just designed for running around and trying new things (although it's still a comparatively linear experience, given that you still do the kingdoms in a particular order, with only two forks in the road).
This is extremely well-made, you should be proud. I love the statement that this game makes during the festival in Metro Kingdom. At what you could argue is the climax of the game they throw a festival in your - excuse me, ahem, Mario's, honor. And what's the absolute apex of the climax? The first level Mario ever appeared in. It's saying "look how far we've come, and yet, look how entertaining the basic core of the game is." Run, jump, dodge, save the princess. Still hasn't gotten old.
I quite like this one. When I originally played it, Odyssey was instantly my favorite Mario game. After 5 years? Yeah, it’s pretty good, no doubt, and what it has done for the series simply cannot be understated. However, it has slid down the rankings a bit, as I have started to see some of the cracks I did not before, most of which are rooted in its obsession with originality instead of refinement. For reference, my current favorites are Galaxy and 3D World (which I actually didn’t think that I was super huge on until I realized that I had replayed the Switch version about 7 times already).
I’m literally like, two minutes in and I’ve already subbed. Your humor and Scott-The-Woz-type randomness is just perfect. Keep it up bro, you got some real potential
Mario Odyssey was really something else man. I’ve actually been playing a bit every day recently. I’ve always felt Galaxy just kinda lacked the tight platforming due to the antigravity. Odyssey really is the best Mario Game, and I don’t think anyone can convince me otherwise

You really hit the nail on the head with all of this one. Odyssey felt downright freeing in all of its design philosophy and I didn't even realize why until you juxtaposed it with the earlier entries (and even against other series like Kirby) here. Wonderful work as always, good sir!
I had a complete opposite feeling with the moons. Moons are given as rewards for literally every single little and major thing. It makes them feel mundane and unremarkable. The other games gave you coins, lives, and other "disposables" as rewards for smaller tasks to make getting the Star feel truly special. If you just start putting moons in the places of these "disposables" then the Moons themselves feel just as forgetable. You aren't supposed to remember those small moments as the major ones and vice versa.
The older games also still do encourage exploration like through Red and Blue Coins, smaller different focused obhectives that reward exploration without taking away from the major tasks.
To me moons felt so disposable I stopped caring about halfway into the game, because I was constantly swimming in them and it felt like noting was special since EVERYTHING was special. Break a box? Moon. Pound a spot? Moon. Talk to someone? Moon. Got a moon, Toadette gives you MORE MOONS FOR THAT. It just hits comic absurdity.
Its like if Breath of the Wild's whole goal was collecting Korok Seeds.
One of the coolest things about Odyssey for me is how they provide a bunch of backstory and lore for the different gameplay elements on the map screen. I really hope they continue to try to build up the Mario world and lore in future games, and perhaps start doing more to tie all the spinoffs together.
I like games that let you be free, it’s like, you need an objective but sometimes you just wanna go at your own pace, we don’t want to gain abilities over time, we want them all at the start.
Mario Odyssey is in the conversation for one of the greatest Mario games. That alone shows you that people hold this game in high praise. However it seems that Odyssey has gotten a bit of hate for minor issues as of late but in my opinion Mario Odyssey is peak Nintendo.

Although I’m not a personal fan of odyssey, I love lots of stuff about it
I love Nintendo's design philosophy of giving you all the tools at the beginning, instead of hiding them behind upgrades. Makes replays all the more fun, when I can just destroy the game's beginning challenges and find alternate paths due to my mastery of the game's deep controls, instead of the 'artificial mastery' of upgrade trees. Same reason I enjoyed BotW so much. 2017 was such a return to form for Nintendo.

If only Nintendo would take another look at Kirby to revive the 2D Mario series in a more inspired way... Seriously, the 3DS games, ESPECIALLY Planet Robobot, are a huge slap in the face of the NSMB games. They showed how can you have the same formula and engine but still innovate and do something that feels fresh and interesting.
But yeah, Odyssey is absolutely fantastic, I even cried in the end when I first beat it. I'll never get this wave of people that started hating it in recent times.

Odyssey isn't a personal favorite for me but I loved the video and the music choice was so fuckign good and im really glad to know entering rito village for the first time left a mark on you the same way it did for me. Oyssey may not be an amazing game but it is an amazing introduction to the Mario series and prob led people to try other more advanced stuff like Hat In time. So In short Thank you Odyssey.
I've never fought the flower robot, and I did that on purpose. first time was an accident but every playthrough after I just grabbed 3 different moons

Odyssee was so boring in my opinion... just a discovery game with Mario. I miss the levels and task you had to do like bring a penguin to the mother or try to ride Yoshi through a parkour to get a star not collect some stupid moons

That's literally the whole point of Odyssey. It's main focus is exploration and it's nonlinear progression.

The "World 3D" is their own subfranchise. You can't include it with 64, Sunshine, Galaxy 1 and 2 and Odyssey.
Sorry Voyan but I hate Odyssey. People say it’s groundbreaking but I feel exactly the opposite. It receded to repetitive things (every “type” of mission gets repeated at least once even the crappy seed herding ones, and they aren’t any more interesting), it receded to gimmicks (powerups it doesn’t really develop), so many of the moons just have *bad* design. If it were any other 3D platformer people would blast it. If you ask me it’s also an ugly game, the worlds are all in voids and have disjointed challenge rooms with no context and the assets feel lazily used, they don’t truly feel alive and handmade. Yes it’s bigger and more of a sandbox than 3D World/Land, but those impress me more because they did a lot more under their format. All the stuff they tossed in Odyssey just blegh. No matter how much they put in it’s all badly designed. It’s too bad the movement is always the same jump into cap jump crap too! God. I don’t even want to go on about this game because it feels like no matter what I say people don’t get it or laugh at it if you don’t like the game, and I HATE it.
I hate mentioning this video but Joseph Anderson was right about the game, the problem with his video is his greater-than-thou attitude. That video made waves, but because of his attitude it made an even more toxic atmosphere.

As someone who dosent odyssey ill admit the movement is the best but the biggest problem with the game by far is 90% of the moons are copy pasted and slightly reskinned making the game really boring the moons since theres so many also dont feel satisfying at all unlike getting a star or a shine for me its the worst 3d mario by far and feels unpolished
