I just fired one of these in full-auto yesterday (with an EOTech) and I couldn't believe the accuracy! Get these to the Marines whenever it's affordable!
I don't have any personal experience with this weapon, but I'm liking what I'm hearing about this weapon so far. Combining the functionality of the good old AR-15 design with advanced German engineering. Getting the best of both American and German designs. I love German guns and I love American guns, so this to me is practically perfect.
This is an excellent development. I used an A2 for 6 years and just to not have to clean the baked-on carbon off of the bolt and chamber alone, should be worth the money of upgrading to a system like this. Its beyond the pale not to make this fix. You'll still have grit coming in through the ejection port cover (i.e. sand and dirt) that can jam up the rearward movement of the bolt carrier group, but not having to deal with carbon is a VAST improvement! DO it for the troops!
i have this model in paintball gun, from the BT company they call it the tm-15 it fell really amazing and the feel with the hands, shoulder and arms position is really comfortable
This seems to be the best option. A very familiar weapon to the current weapons, so training it in won't be difficult. As well as being very reliable. Just takes the M4 design and makes vast improvements. A very good all around weapon. I would like to see this being fielded now.
This is probably the best replacement for the M16,M4 systems in the military today. It takes a system that our troops are already familiar with, and adds a reliable gas system, that makes the weapon as reliable, if not more, then the AK-47 series . The hk 416 incorporates the best of many systems. The short stroke gas system, and bolt system from the G36, and the best features of the AR-15 series. you can forget the XM8, and FN SCAR seres.
if you retrofit a copetitor AR with a gas piston you can achieve about the same consistancy. the 416 has been designed to drain water and sand away from its key components though giving it the edge over a retrofited AR.
Hmm, An HK416, with an extended magazine, grip handle, acog scope, suppressor, and a flashlight, would be the greatest gift anyone could ever give to me
HK announced that they are building a factory in the US to make the civilian models of the 416. They'll be called the HK MR556 and MR762. Firing respective size rounds as their model number suggests. I can't wait to buy the 7.62 this fall.
3000+ rounds threw this rifle without cleaning. NOT A SINGLE JAM OR MALFUNCTION!!! This rifle is by far the best of the group. Hardly any recoil, very comfortable to fire.
Nice rifle. It looks like it would be better with a less bulky rail and a quicker access to the piston. I'm not a super cool operator, or some crap like that, but those seem like they'd be good improvements for a second generation of those rifles. An extended charging handle would be nice too =).
416 in esoteric terms is funny, when you know. I mean for it to be the best GUN and for that guy to say "They want it to be used in war right NOW" is pretty hillarious. Yeah, this gun is very good at settling the problems of naughty people.
Production capacity might be a factor if the military was looking into purchasing them. I get your point, though if they can't produce enough of the weapon, it doesn't matter how good it is. Plus who knows where they would wind up making the weapon or what kind of deal they'd get from either company.
If the HK416 results in less jams and clearings than the M16/M4 family then I'm all for it. Personally, I like to buy American just to help our economy. But I also love guns like the SIG 556 and SCAR 16. Nowadays though, the AR 15 platform has some many mods and customizations to it, the quality of the rifle really varies depending on the build.
It would take some very extreme temps to have that affect on the internals of a weapon. There are several lubricants that act as a type of anti-freeze, that reduce friction and also provide protection from internal freezing. One other thing to consider is that having heat transfer, with sudden cooling, would probably crack internal parts, rendering the rifle useless. Keep in mind, I'm talking about very extreme environments.
God damn! Every time Germany comes with a weapon they have the best looks and performances. Now it won my heart on my top 5 perferred assault rifles. All it needs is some hardcore shit like the M203, and it'll be all set. I wish the M4 was like that though, cause I don't like the short barrel looks. Then again, it's all about performance. 1)HK 416 2)Colt M4A1(So what if it's rusty) 3)HK G36 4)FAMAS 5)Tavor Tar12
7.62 has more penetrating ability. The funky stuff comes from the 5.56. When the 5.56 hits a soft target, the round is designed to tumble and thus break up within the target. But it can still penetrate body armor. I don't know exactly how it works, but the 5.56 penetrates hard targets and fractures on soft targets such as people.
The HK416 is basically an ar18 with a new coat of paint. Gas piston technology has been around since the late 1800s. Look up Hiram Stevens Maxim and John Moses Browning.
@MasterChief2 no man the MAIN diference betwne both is the gas sistem that they use, while the m16 series uses a Direct Imprigment sistem (also know as DI, wich has some drawbacks) the hk 416 uses a short stroke piston sistem, wich is quoted to be more realiable , but you can put an 416 upper reciever on a standar m16 lower and it will work just fine
@stefannico Unless I'm mistaken it was designed in conjunction between the US Army's Delta H&K's American division. That being said it says a lot that when the World's most elite special ops specifically seeks out H&K to make their new gun.
No question is a nooby question. The Heckler and koch 416 is an amazing weapon if you notice its recoil is much less then the FN easier for the shooter to put round after round on target and its amazing at keeping it self clean. This thing is the mary poppins of rifle's.
the US has been quietly distributing m14s around deployed troops and have even gone to domestic police and said that they need their surplus m14s back. the m16 is really only used by the marines anymore, the army mostly carries m4s, in my experience.
@curseofa5r5a I suppose the M4 can deliver a bit more muzzle velocity, but, it isn't that horribly affected. The M4 Carbine is 33 inches long, while the G36C is 28 inches long, both with stocks extended. This is only a 5 inch difference, a few of those inches in unnecessary hand-guard length. The G36C fires the exact same round, but has a better, more advanced gas system, allowing it to pump out rounds more effectively. Also, when the stock is folded, the G36C is 10 inches shorter than the M4.
@Asugiru Yet it also carries some of the integral problems of the m4, such as charging handle location, non-ambidextous, and just bad switch locations. It actually is just as expensive as the ACR for the upper-reciever only, and fared just as well as the ACR in torture tests.
HK 416 is a huge improvement from inside compared to Colt/Armalite M4/M16 rifles but I prefer Colts outlook. (Imo HK 416 pistol grip, barrel, rear sight (mp5 sights disgust me) and stock looks more uglier than in Colts M4.) The most neatest solution to the US Army would be that they would replace the old inner parts of m4 and m16 with hk416 (which are very similar to g36 parts) parts. And so the loved AR-generation would move on. :)
@Omega201396 the problem with carabines is the short barrel (223 for the g36c) wich traduces in less muzzle velocity and therefore the round will deliver less energy to the target specially at long range, while the m4 (with a 370mm barrel) can do a little bit better at long range and will pack a bigger punch at close range, the g36c doesnt offer the performance that the US military is looking for, they want a not so compact, accurated, long range, powerfull rifle, not a commando carabine
The SEALs carried the 416 into Bin Laden's compound... Excellent performance! It's like a really well balanced M4 with much welcome German refinements.
I'm not sure how I feel about the HK416, I love the m16, when I was trained on it, it felt very smooth to shoot. I haven't fired the HK but I have developed a strong affinity to the m16 and don't know how I feel about replacing it with a different design.
The actual M14 (not M1A) had full wood furniture... I believe it was the civilian M1A that first started using synthetic stocks... Back when M16 was new people never used synthetic stocks... they were too expensive for most and plus many people didn't like it at first... Also the SOCOM 2 M1A is shortened by about 5 inches of heavy bbl... add in heavier full-auto rated bolts, bbl, and innards and you have yourself a 11 lb gun... The M16 averaged around 8 lbs...
@HUEJOHNSON I didn't hear about the Marine Corps' order of the 416. Thank you, just another thing to put on my list of Reasons I'm joining the Marine Corps. And the M16 and M4 are not necessarily faulty, but more along the lines of not completely reliable. The m16a4 doesn't seem to have a problem with jamming and stuff, but with the shortened system of the m4, sometimes after a long ammo intensive battle, the m4 have been known to jam a little.
is the hk 416 a drop in upper receiver for ar 15 or is that a toatally new weapons system? do they sell these babies to the general public. man id love to get one of those.
i agree with you on the copy of the good parts, but there is still one big problem with the M-16 AR-15.the bolt and the little rings that are so problematic ,when it comes for dirty and heavy use.they should get rid of the bolt and put the piston gas operated system. i only would use the AR-15 type weapons for small game and target shooting.but for war or self defence, there is not one rifle that can out proform the AK-47 and for the price your getting allot of bang for your buck.
They deny it because it's patently untrue. The externals have a passing resemblance but the internals are very different. Internally the AK series is pretty much an M1 Garand.
I will have to decide after getting my hands on it. I'm in Asia now, so I don't get to shoot any guns. :( But the M16/M4 platform is quite old, and definitely could use an update. If the HK416 is an improvement, then great! One of the big reasons that private citizens buy the AR15 in America is because parts are readily available. Another reason is that they are used to the way it operates. But of course there are many better rifles out there.
yes i have seen a SCAR and in the few vids. i could find they worked just fine every weapons has problems i know simple shit was ignored but i know thet'll fix that thats why i like the SCAR.
Yup, it's cancelled, as is SCAR, I think. And to the guy below, there is a variant of the AK-74, that's a bullpup rifle. True, it is not 6.8, nor is it modular, but it is short. Actually, I think Magpul's Masada has a high degree of modularity with a pretty big round, and still has low recoil- check it out.
@DukeRNT The only thing that makes it different is that piston system that it has, which american companies have replicated, so H&K isn't the only company with a M4 piston system rifle. We may switch to this, but why go with a foriegn company when you can go with an american one that makes the same product?
Well I was under the impression the DOD were thinkin about implimentin the HKG-36 as the next gen assault rifel. Im 21 and plannin to go into the British Army next year and mmy fav guns are the MP5 altough it looses its punch at longer range or the M4, but we have to use the SA80 which is acurate but prefer the M4 its easier to use.
I will say I absolutely LOVE M1As... I haven't been able to justify buying one yet but hopefully soon... I personally would much rather own a M1A over an AR 15 any day... I'd get the M14 copy, full wood and full length but a stainless bbl and a nice scope... Your buddy's a lucky one to have a socom 2 but I don't really like those... It doesn't look like an M1A anymore when it's that short... idk... might be just me...
This should be a good weapon considering Delta Force was the launch customer. And the M4A1 is a wonderful gun except the 14.5 inch barrel doesn't give the velocity needed to cause terminal spin inside the target like the 20 inch M16A2...
I don't know about this weapon. I've heard that there were some problems with the 416s that the Norwegians were using. Apparently the piston system that it uses while in short term was more reliable than the m4, after long term use the piston becomes unreliable and it requires maintance to fix. I have heard however that the problems are being fixed but still, it is not without it flaws.
So, this means it would be perfect for HMMVW travel and would allow more free firing in a tight situation. The G36C is also much lighter due to its mainly polymer make-up, so it would lessen the load on soldiers. Finally, the G36C is fully ambidextrous, as I stated earlier, meaning soldiers wouldn't be smacked in the face by rounds if they were left handed(the G36 series has a special shell-deflector/stock lock combo to prevent this). :D
@Omega201396 they overal length doesnt affect the muzzle velocity, but the barrel length, the g36c barrel is 5.5 inches shorter than the m4 "short barrel" its like compare an 20" m16 with an 14,5" m4, that diference really decresses the long range capavilities of the g36c, but remeber this weapon was not created to equip entire armies but commando units wich needed a compact, ligth weigth carabine for close range combat, consider one of the main complaints of the US soliders in afganistan (next)
Hmmm... a replacement for "famous" M4? Good idea, however with one serious drawback, M4 was intended as "cheaper M16" while H&K 416 is not and nobody seems willing to finance such rearming in full scale. P.S. My country (Latvia) has chosen G36 as replacement for old AK, G3 and few M16 we got now.
is the lack of punch of the 5.56 specially when firing at ranges above the 300 mts, even when fired form 20" inchers m16a4, then imagine what would be the effiency on target if you replace it with a 9 inches carabine... and aobut the gas sistem, yes the piston gas sistena has showed to be more operative than the direct gas imprigment, but the main question would be, how it does allows you to put more rounds on target? specially when fired form a an small carabine?
The main reason we deviated away from gas piston is that's how Stoner designed the m16... directly ported... I doubt the military went too deep into the design as long as it worked well and was reliable enough (not to mention looked futuristic and scary to the enemy)... m14 and m1 were too heavy to carry twenty some odd miles a day... so Stoner shows them a lightweight rifle with the ability to carry a couple thousand rounds per GI... But hopefully they do go back to piston driven...
one of the greatest assault rifles I have ever seen
I just fired one of these in full-auto yesterday (with an EOTech) and I couldn't believe the accuracy! Get these to the Marines whenever it's affordable!

Reliable, durable, accurate, compact(for the short versions), what more could you ask for? Beast gun right here!
I've never shot a gun, but this gun is... Beautiful.
My pal is in the army serving his duty right now and he gets to use one of these, that lucky bastard.
i have this model in paintball gun, from the BT company they call it the tm-15 it fell really amazing and the feel with the hands, shoulder and arms position is really comfortable

if you retrofit a copetitor AR with a gas piston you can achieve about the same consistancy. the 416 has been designed to drain water and sand away from its key components though giving it the edge over a retrofited AR.
Hmm, An HK416, with an extended magazine, grip handle, acog scope, suppressor, and a flashlight, would be the greatest gift anyone could ever give to me
A great gun, indeed.
If it's meant to be a mix between the M4 and M16, it's obviously going to be possibly the best rifle for decades.
possibly the best carabine in the world
the xm8 is pretty damn good as well
This gun looks great! I would love to add it to my gun collection but have had little luck finding one. :(
When Germans and Americans come together, they make good stuff.
Man......once the P-MAG M3 comes out in Spring. You'll be able to have this gun utilize the potential of the MAGPUL P-MAG M3. It's pretty sweet.
Dont forget the SIG 550 Series these are too amazing guns!!!
it would be cool to see this system incorperated into a bullpup design too. I still prefer standard design but extra choices are good.
HK announced that they are building a factory in the US to make the civilian models of the 416. They'll be called the HK MR556 and MR762. Firing respective size rounds as their model number suggests. I can't wait to buy the 7.62 this fall.

Yeah, this gun is very good at settling the problems of naughty people.
Good stuff. the American compadres slurred nicely. I'm currently plucking my hair out trying to save this video.
Production capacity might be a factor if the military was looking into purchasing them. I get your point, though if they can't produce enough of the weapon, it doesn't matter how good it is. Plus who knows where they would wind up making the weapon or what kind of deal they'd get from either company.
this is a really nice gun oh and it's big brother, the 417 is pretty nice too.
looks like a badass weapon
My favorite assualt rifle....
There's not a single gun that's COMPLETELY reliable . The military looks for the gun that is most reliable .
Yes, we can get both semi-auto military style sporting weapons, and fully automatic ones registered prior to 1986.
Ak-74 and modern 100 series - very accurate
after 100 rounds even the gas piston of an ak is very dirty, this gun stays clean ,great success
*drools* ahhh i love this gun, it looks so pretty :] the Norwegian Army is replacing the HK-G36 rifle with the HK-416 :)
1)HK 416
2)Colt M4A1(So what if it's rusty)
3)HK G36
4)FAMAS
5)Tavor Tar12
Colt had a piston gas system back in the 60's. It was the model 703. It was tested along with the gas impingement system. Which one came on top?
that is an awesome weapon system
7.62 has more penetrating ability. The funky stuff comes from the 5.56. When the 5.56 hits a soft target, the round is designed to tumble and thus break up within the target. But it can still penetrate body armor. I don't know exactly how it works, but the 5.56 penetrates hard targets and fractures on soft targets such as people.
hey the hk33 is my fav gun too, i mainly like its look; its a perty gun.
This rifle is is the new standard assault rifle for the Norwegian army, replacing the god old ag3.. Nice upgrade
cool weapon, looks cool and sounds cool
@HUEJOHNSON The C7 have never been a standard issue in the norwegian armed forces. They did however use some of them in a few spec ops divisions.
My new favorite weapon.
HK416 is the greatest gun I've ever heard.
p.x)This gun is used by korean special force and i always love it
thats a sweet gun, is this being sold in the US?
if this was made in a bulpup configuration it would be THEE best assault rifle out thier

@stefannico

@laughs2hard456 Same thing. The M416 is the name for the HK416 if it were adopted as a military weapon.
i heard it had a small problem when the bolt closed it would cause misfires, but that was a while back, they have probably buffed that out by now.
You know, when they keep saying it stays clean, it sorta reminds me of when the M-16 came out. And we all know how that turned out.
damn im looking forward to going to the army now!
Norwegian army just bought 8000 of these babies!
less malfunctions and all around better design from what i hear
No question is a nooby question. The Heckler and koch 416 is an amazing weapon if you notice its recoil is much less then the FN easier for the shooter to put round after round on target and its amazing at keeping it self clean. This thing is the mary poppins of rifle's.

I have to admit germany makes the bset guns on the face of this planet!
Can civilians buy this gun or is it only for law enforcement?
When I go into the USMC, Is it possible for me to use this gun as my own gun, in place of the standard issue. If I purchased it myself of course
I want to buy one of these for 3-gun shoots. but i can only if there's a Semi-auto version. is there a Semi-auto version?
This gun is meant to replace the M4 because the M$ is a 5.56 round and the 416 is a 7.62 round so it packs more stopping power
is the lack of punch of the 5.56 specially when firing at ranges above the 300 mts, even when fired form 20" inchers m16a4, then imagine what would be the effiency on target if you replace it with a 9 inches carabine... and aobut the gas sistem, yes the piston gas sistena has showed to be more operative than the direct gas imprigment, but the main question would be, how it does allows you to put more rounds on target? specially when fired form a an small carabine?
The main reason we deviated away from gas piston is that's how Stoner designed the m16... directly ported... I doubt the military went too deep into the design as long as it worked well and was reliable enough (not to mention looked futuristic and scary to the enemy)... m14 and m1 were too heavy to carry twenty some odd miles a day... so Stoner shows them a lightweight rifle with the ability to carry a couple thousand rounds per GI... But hopefully they do go back to piston driven...
how much would HK416 be in usd if it's released for the commercial market?
