      The military has experimented with this kind of stuff for decades. The problem is that soldiers need to be able to move around freely while in transit and combat, and you can't really do that with all that crap stuck to you. Plus helicopters are far more reliable and cost-effective, which is the exact reason why they don't give much thought to any alternatives.

    The power source is fans? (To actually get off the ground: you would need them to smaller, lighter, and more powerful. [You would also need a lot more of them.] You also need a much lighter, much more powerful energy source. [You've already created an Arclight reactor. This is something you could test it's power on.].)

    Maybe scrap EDFs all together. Maybe you need to come up with something better than an edf that is also cost effective. Perhaps a multi bladed system.

    • @hacksmith
      @hacksmith  7 лет назад +17

      That's the easy way out! ... also the props would be huge. Kinda defeats the purpose of flying like iron man =)

    • @RealCheesyBread
      @RealCheesyBread 7 лет назад +5

      the Hacksmith No no. Let's just look at the backpack. Instead of EDFs use a different design. Perhaps use a centrifugal fan that is long (the length of your back) and sucks air on from the sides and out the bottom. It gives you more blade area without having the width of a whole prop. It also gives you lower RPMs with more torque which is safer and easier to make.

    • @hacksmith
      @hacksmith  7 лет назад +5

      Centrifugal fans can't produce that much thrust though...

    • @RealCheesyBread

    • @christopherlee7334
      @christopherlee7334 7 лет назад

      Omega Zultron The iron man suit components are all simply extrapolations of what we already have today. And of course one single person wouldn't design the entire suit. Just like how a fighter jet isn't designed by a single person, or a functional exoskeleton, or an augmented reality device. But Elon has more than enough funding and engineers at his disposal for creating something similar, though of course not an exact replica.
      And in fact we already DO have power exoskeletons being used for both civilian life and the military. Just look at Cyberdyne's HAL suit in Japan, or the US Military's TALOS suit. It doesn't fly, but we DO have jetpacks and rocket belts, and we've had jetpacks and rocket belts for over 50 years already, just like we have bulletproof armor and augmented reality for fighter pilots.
      The main reason we're not using it all in combination is because it's ridiculously impractical and expensive, all for a single person, unlike an Osprey or a new destroyer. And billionaires don't really care about the new toys right now, so funding won't be coming from them.

    • @hacksmith
      @hacksmith  7 лет назад +12

      Yes... you can. We've run the calculations, designing a system using EDFs and lithium polymer batteries will allow for about 1-2 minute flight time. Still not economically feasible for a commercial system, but enough for a prototype.

      Idk if you know but there is actually a guy with a jet engine on his back and can fly for a short duration of 10 minutes. But is a jet. If that is what you are thinking then is fine but I am talking about something as small as Tony Stark's hand. Something near the size of those thrusts you made and not a big jet pack on your back.

    • @hacksmith
      @hacksmith  7 лет назад +7

      Our design is going to use EDFs and will last for a minute or two. We're aware there isn't a magic arc reactor to power the system -- that's besides the point.

      I understand (I'm an engineering student) but it looks like that what you are trying to achieve can be designed by anyone with enough passion and an internet connection. Speaking of passion, can you make videos on the more technical parts of the project? Like all the considerations and calculations that led to your choices. Most of us just want to see the thing fly, but others (like me) are interested in the reasons behind your technical choices, like an analysis on the single components and why did you decide to put them together the way you choose :) (I'm sorry if I sound rude, but english isn't my first language and I have an hard time with the feeling-transmission thing)

    • @hacksmith
      @hacksmith  7 лет назад

      Technically yeah, and we usually mention that in our videos -- you don't *need* to be an engineer, but it certainly helps. There's lots of things we've learned through our education and especially work experience with regards to manufacturing, something that you can't learn as much about online =)

  • @Paaanzaaa

    At first: Great project and video!
    What came into my mind while watching:
    How about using some EDF's in a backpack which are "pumping" the airstream through a prefit channel?
    Like some Rocketbooster-like nozzle as an outlet, whilst 2-4 EDF's are giving enough volume to get an increased airspeed at the exit.
    Maybe that'll help bringing up efficiency

    • @hacksmith
      @hacksmith  7 лет назад +3

      Unfortunately any kind of redirection of thrust through piping or tubing... reduces potential thrust by a significant factor =(

    • @Paaanzaaa
      @Paaanzaaa 7 лет назад +1

      Which would make me ask, why Vector-Thrust then is so efficient? Whilst pumping more air into that channeling as being pushed through a reduced diameter, airspeed and pressure of the outcoming air should rise, if I'm not mistaking completely

    • @hacksmith
      @hacksmith  7 лет назад +1

      Do you have any examples of vector thrusting with such a system? All that I've seen so far angle the motor to vector the thrust, which is fine. If you have piping redirecting the thrust a significant distance you're gonna lose a lot of thrust. This might be okay for little RC quad copters that already have a lot more thrust than they need, but for a system like mine you're just never gonna be able to get enough power to do it =(

    • @hacksmith
      @hacksmith  7 лет назад +2

      Basically, the most efficient thrust comes directly out of the fan -- redirecting it in anyway causes turbulence in the airflow, which reduces optimal thrust.

    • @Paaanzaaa
      @Paaanzaaa 7 лет назад +2

      Oh, okay, haven't thought of the turbulences in airstream.
      I was thinking of pumping air into a central channel with the fans angled in kind of a 30° angle and letting it out straight down or even angled a little to the sides, to give some sideways stabilization.
      A little inspired by the scheme of a turbofan but with multiple EFD's producing a combined airflow out to produce thrust.

    Extending the wires can cause ripple current issues in the wiring, and make the ESC's perform poorly, overheat, tan also burn up motors. To compensate, you need CC cap packs to suppress the current ripples. They are installed next to the eSC,a nd can be piggy backed to each other. all of your equipment will work better, and more efficient once that is taken care of.
    Cheers!

    I would love to be able to do projects like these with my son, we do smaller projects and inventions now but nothing anywhere close to this magnitude. I wish so badly I had the funds to do so, he would love that so much.

    If you put the fans on a free floating bearing ring in which you have around your hands it should automatically stabilize you similar to a gyroscope
