They would have to change out a lot of materials for expensive light weight equivalents such as metallic fiberglass (there are actually tungsten based forms of glass with high thermal tolerance), zylon, aerogel, and various alloys. It's honestly as simple as it looks. Two jets, on a gimbal you can move around to direct the thrust. Right hand controls throttle, left hand controls a control vain that directs the thrust and causes you to yaw!

I keep imagining a system for E.V.A. where multiple vectoring thrusters with perhaps 20 lb max thrust on a 4 axis system, tied to a gps system from the craft that it's launching from. There would be a programmable invisible fence that would override the control of the E.V.A. system and prevent velocities above a certain range in relation to the craft and remaining fuel, and automatically return the astronaut to the craft with minimal velocity based on fuel available. This video reminds me of this system. If they don't already have it, I'd be shocked considering the math is far simpler than landing a rocket.
