Building a table to hold my vise

  • Thank you for watching!
    The finished table is about 865lbs (390kg). With the vise it's about 1,025lb (465kg). The steel for the frame cost $235. The top was a scrap, cut from the center of a ring, and I don't remember the exact cost but I guess $400. The vise cost more than twice as much as the table, but both should last a few lifetimes.

    I've had the chance to use this table a couple of times now. It's fun to whip out in front of people:) I can see what people are talking about when they say the legs are delicate, but they're design to support a "mostly" vertical load, not be torqued from the side or pushed back into place. If you just let the table open or close on it's own and don't force anything, it works great ruclips.net/user/postUgkxyFZUPFEey-PuqsPMxqaykBhgA1LWxFHh Once it's set up, it's pretty solid. My only gripe would probably be related to the clamps provided. They're not the highest quality. They do the job, so no big deal, but they could be better. All in all, pretty cool gadget.

      I once purchased a set of Heavy duty sawhorses at a farm auction. Beam was a 10 x 10 H beam 3/8 web and legs were 4 x 4 x 1/4 angle they could have supported the front of the space shuttle if need be. Farmers never overbuild anything They just make it strong enough to hold anything they may be able to move with whatever they may own.

    You should make an attachment for that vise to attach it to your tractor. Probably be very simple for you.
    Largest vise we've had was a leg vise roughly 4 feet tall. Easily 400 pounds. My father donated it to a local museum a couple of decades ago. We had it attached to the wall of our garage. We we'd use it, you could see the wall flexing under the weight and our strength.

    Jeremy, I love your workmanship, attention to detail and practical application of these skills. Many comments have covered already most points concerning the massiveness of this bench. Well it may cause a slight perturbation in the earth’s gravity field distribution but it is admirably suited to purpose! I understand your feelings having come so far and still there is the “pain-ting” to do. Don’t worry! It’s not likely to oxidise to a pile of rust anytime this millennium, especially kept in the dry area you occupy. That gives you plenty of time to choose how to degrease it and select a colour scheme matching such an epic bench. Well done and thank you for the privilege of watching a top grade artisan at work!

      Awesome table Jeremy!
      If you locate the center of gravity of the table (weld a tab and lift with your hoist) you could drill and tap a hole for a 5/8”, or 3/4”, shoulder eye bolt. If you don’t want the bolt in all the time could make a flush plug to fill the hole and protect the threads. Install the bolt, then you could then move it with your hoist.

  • @laurinos8774
    @laurinos8774 5 лет назад +4

    I just absolutely love how beautifully over engineered it is. Moving the legs out a few inches, so it doesn't tip over as easily. I am pretty sure nothing will make that tip, ever. You should test with a longer tube how far out you need to put your weight for it to move at all. I just hope you will not need to move your workshop, because this will be a beast to move. Well done on the video very enjoyable.

    Got a vise exactly the same as that in 1972. It cost $490.00 then. I purchased replacement jaw inserts in 2016, and the cost of them was $180.00 for the pair. You gonna LOVE that vise.

    Jeremy, you are one gifted individual! I swear if someone backed you into a corner, you'd build steps out of air molecules! You have a way of presenting complex things in simple form for your audience to follow. You add just enough comedy to brighten up the 'seriousness'; without overdoing it and taking away from the seriousness. Your speech is eloquent; in that you know exactly what you want to say without hem-and-hawing and adding unnecessary words such as "you know", "I mean", etc. Your video-editing skill is like few people on RUclips. And THANK YOU for not adding unnecessary music throughout all of your videos!
    You are of a different "breed" from most, which is refreshing; and also something I can totally equate with!
    My sweetheart and I just adore your videos! Please don't ever stop doing this! May Jesus continue to bless you many-fold. He has truly gifted you beyond words.
