- In this video I will show you How to Build a Simple yet heavy duty Welding Table on a Budget.
I use 3/4 all thread to make the legs adjustable. I uses some awesome casters I found on Amazon that are rated at 500 lbs. each! I do a guessing game to see if you can guess how much the 4x8x1/2 top weighs.
I give you costs related to this build as well as give you the answer to how much the table top weighs.

Lol seriously, get an engine hoist and or a portable gantry, weld some lift points on that beast and... don't be so sketchy. A gantry with a little chain hoist with a balancer would have made this ridiculously easy. Seriously, I love the table build, but please don't move heavy stuff like this in the future. For me. Please.

I am shocked that the foot of the jack didnt kick out on the initial lift. Hi-lift jacks on concrete floors not a good combo. For others watching, you can rent engine hoists do this type of work. Also never ever ever leave a hi-lift handle in the down position with weight on the jack, and never straddle the handle.

I laughed out loud when you got to the part where you said "now I gonna have to do something sketchy after taking the worlds most unstable jack on two slick surfaces and lifting a table to almost a 45 degree angle...you are a man after my own heart but I farm for a living so we do stuff that makes people cringe everyday. I would have probably put the all thread on first and flipped the table, bent the all thread and had to start that point over lol. Best of luck with the channel!
@@thepitpatrol probably could have made a jig with a come along, that way he was not close to the potential hazard, I've been on construction sites and seen the type of injuries that occur from these metal plates falling on people. People are dumb and monkey see monkey do, that's why it should have some sort of warning. I know natural selection should pick off those who listen to the Internet but it's also the fault of poor/half information being spewed on the Internet.
DUDE! This is how people die! I was on the edge of my seat watching this! You are fortunate to be okay, glad you are. I say the following out of concern, I have seen too many serious and fatal accidents that could have been prevented.
That jack not kicking out from under him surprised me... a few tapcons and a block wood in the concrete would have been so much safer! Invest in a come-a-long, you could use to anchor the other side and have a friend - a few friends when dealing with this weight - and have negative pressure applied opposite the positive pressure you were applying. With th way you were leaning, one slip and that could have crushed you. Please be careful in the future!

My first thought was that table is complete overkill. But then I remembered that often you can do a small job with a big tool, but not often can you do a big job with a small tool, so fair play to you.
I guessed 540lb, I knew it would be heavy but over 600, that's a beast of a top!

One of the most dangerous things I’ve seen in a long time. No guards on the grinders, shorts and soft shoes. Let alone leaving the ground clamp from the welding machine attached while attempting to flip the table over. I’ve fired many people over unsafe work practices.

Great build! My 10 yr old son walked away saying NOPE when you were trying to flip that beast of a table. Hahaha! I said around 650-700 lbs, so I was good on the weight calculations. I am definitely going to build a nice heavy duty table like this when I move and get a larger shop! Keep up the great work and stay safe out there!

640 pounds is 10 pound plate is quarter inch thick and that’s 12 x 12” wide range that is 10 pounds

@@TheImprovementChannel I've got twenty years experience as a welder including two positions that were structural steel. I built my own table some years ago that is similar to what you have here, but 5x10 by 1/2 inch plate. That plate on what I built weighed over a half ton alone. Some of the moves I've seen you do in this video, I'll put in the phrase of "you are one lucky dude." Be glad you are still around for the people who love you because your guardian angle was sure on the job and I'm sure she had backup waiting in the wings.
With hi-lift jacks the test is given right before the lesson. Lesson 1. Never ever let go of the handle. The handles are removable for a reason. A beter idea might have been to weld the chain to the plate allowing things to pivot, and the jack to remain vertical. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Good luck in your ventures.

I feel like this reinforces how I'm overestimating what size of table I will need, that looked cumbersome to say the least. Glad you still have all your limbs and life.
I was using it to cut ups some wood the last few weekends and I am so glad it is as big as it it. Depends on your shop size though.

I was off on the table top a B as i guessed 500 Lbs but with all the other stuff I had guessed about 750 to 800 lbs total weight. I'm glad you didn't get hurt any more than you did flipping that beast.

I don't like to put people down when they're having a go, but so much of that stuff was straight up stupid. When you don't have experience (and clearly you don't) doing something that may kill you, get some information rather than just having a go. There are lots of forums out there full of helpful people who are generous with their knowledge. Any one of them would have given you a dozen good safe ways to accomplish that task without risk of personal injury using nothing but tools you already have. Learn some basic principles of timeless tools like wedges, levers, and wheels.
Having your wife reverse the car into you? holy shit mate... You can lift plate much thicker than that using wedges. To the point you can get a lever under it. Almost anything you have can be a lever if it's strong enough. At that point, a block under the lever is a fulcrum. Chock the plate with some wood. Put two steel pipes under the plate and now you can easily roll it - not with your fingers under it, but using a lever. And FFS put some steel can shoes on.
When it comes to lifting/flipping, much the same story. That hi lift jack has its place, and can be used many different ways. Using the above technique you can roll the constructed table to where you have an exposed beam in the roof of suitable strength, weld an eye/chain to the table and lift it using the jack as a hoist. Don't weld cast - presumably the jack and possibly the clevis are both cast and not forged. alternatively, as mentioned, at least triangulate the braces, and then jack from under the brace only in a vertical dimension. With a long enough lever, one man safely lever/flip a plate of that size.
Same story lifting the table when it was on 2 castors. So many near misses and close calls, you won't live through too many days like that. Put your safety first, live to spend time with your family. Hopefully that knock in the head knocked some sense into you and lets you see just how many times you came close to either killing or disabling yourself for life that day. I'm no safety nazi, worked in some rough places. Seen enough guys crushed to death, lost limbs and killed. The rest of your life is a long time to be reflecting on your own stupidity if you get a permanent disabling injury. Don't be that guy - get advice and information before you act.
I am no expert in metal working but I do know that table can easily be a killer and weighs a hell of a lot! I was waiting for that jack to slide out from under the table across the concrete and then see the table crashing down the entire time. That was damn scary.
The fact you held it up then braced it with that thin angle iron too whilst releasing the jack...one small piece of angle iron versus 600 pounds of force pushing down and OUT at the bottom too! It could have easily slipped out and the table come crashing back to its original position, The I beam would do nothing to protect you.
I like what you are making etc but dude please learn some basic safety...your heavy lifting technique has been *very* lucky in this instance.

I weld stuff on my channel and this project is on my to do list. Nice but scary flip. I have done similar flips and had near misses.
I liked the work you did. Here is my thoughts: You have planned to make a heavy duty table to hold up all future heavy duties. Handling heavy machinery requires bigger lifts. You shouldn’t try to skip any step to arrive your goal set on your mind always remember.
If the weight of your table is 200 kg then you would need to have a 200 kg capable lifts to erect, move , flip and to mount casters.
Pretty darn scary. But glad you are safe and sound. Great looking table!

I was spot on at 650lb but, when your 200lb did not tilt it a bit, changed my mind to 850.
I looked like it should have moved as much as I had it tilted!
First I was waiting on the jack to slip or Break. Second when the table flipped I was wondering if the tacked angle iron and the jack was going to become flying objects into orbit let alone the ground lead still hooked to the table from the welder. That could have jerked the welder and bottle over breaking off the regulator and possible valve to bottle.Then once you had it upright you mounted the table to the casters on all thread pencils. Crazy man just crazy. Please don't do anymore heavy metal work and lower the legs all the way down to the casters.

With what you've spent, I would have spent a little more on renting or buying an engine hoist to turn it over.
A hoist and a coupe of strategically welded rings would have been much safer.

Very nice table to begin with. But would have definitely picked a safer way to do that and I have done some seriously sketchy things but not to this extent. I would have wedge one side and put my engine hoist under and welded a lift bracket on the opposite side and lifted it at least that way the table stays connected to the hoist the whole time
I have gotten a lot of similar comments and you are right. I ended up going with what I had instead of seeking out a safer way to do things.

Nice build. I found your video while looking for ideas since I am planning to build a table of my own. I think 1/2” will be a nice sturdy work surface and the 3x3 seems nice and stout. What wall thickness did you use for tubing? I was cringing pretty hard watching you flip that thing. I think you are pretty dang lucky to come out of it with only a smack in the forehead. lol

Bro you stressed me out! I would have started out with something more manageable. If I can't pick it up & haul it in my truck then it stays behind. A little much overkill and don't want to know what you paid but I would have bought proper tools to lift stuff. Sorry but it was wrong in so many ways.
I wanted to use 1/2 steel, it was just over $300 for 4x8 sheet. They would deliver it for $35 but they would not cut it.

james salter what I did is shown in other videos. I had something under the table to prevent me for being injured if the table came off the jack and I was carful to stay clear of the danger areas.
@@TheImprovementChannel What you had under the table would not have prevented injury. It would've slipped right off of that stuff too. I saw you putting stuff under the table, and it was clear that those items would do nothing to save you from injury other than possibly delaying the point of contact by fractions of a second.

I thought your "safety support" was actually an extra aid to help the jack remove both your legs rather than just the boring 1. Would have been like a double whammy invention for turning bone and muscle into jelly and pain.
Honestly I enjoyed the video, because of the suspense. I was thinking 'ratchet strap around the jack base to the table' and '2x4s to the wall' or 'chain to the car bumper' .... 'clamp those chains to the table top'. Even something seemingly innocent like standing on the base to tip it over half could put your head through that dry way ceiling.

Good job, too big for my space. You could get hold of a Mag Drill and retro drill some clamping holes.
Nowrab I might be able to rent one somewhere, it would be nice to have the clamp holes. Do you have any advice for me?
You can rent a mag drill and broach bits. Figure out what size you’re going to use for your clamping posts and drill your holes 1/16” over that. The one I built at work I drilled my holes on 4” centres at 13/16” because I made my clamps out of 3/4” round bar stock.

1 square ft of 1/2" mild steel weighs 20.2 lbs. I always use 20 for easy number 4x8 = 640 lbs.

20.4 x 32 = 652.8
You can also use a calculator and the density of steel which is .283 lb/cu in . You'll be exact all the time. 48 x 96 x 0.5 x .283 = 652.04
Haven't read the other comments yet, but my guess is 653.4 pounds. In addition to your reckless method of flipping the table, put the guard back on your grinder!! Are you mad!?!

Mister, you had me on the edge of my seat pulling off this stunt! You broke all the laws of physics in every measurable angle concerning safety as you cranked the hazard level to the maximum. In this project you did everything possible to punch yourself a ONE-WAY ticket to the emergency room... except, there was an angel holding that table to that concrete floor - I swear my jaw hit the floor with every jiggle you did to make it look like the very-exact thing of what not to do in an extremely and hazardous operation.

You are probably right.
It is common for manufactures to have a safety margin of x2 or x3 the load that the device is intended/rated to take.
Don't let the "haters" get you down. Not all of us have access to a fully supplied machine shop and end up making stuff work with less than stellar safety applications. At the end of the day, a bump on the head, some sore arms and legs is a decent price for the top notch table you built. Nice.

As countless others have said, this is probably one of the most dangerous videos I’ve ever watched and should be deleted. If you were a cat, you spent 8 of your lives building that table.
I fell confident that had the jack failed that the piece of H beam under the table would have given me time to get out of the way before it landed flat on the concrete. Thank you for watching.

That table would hit, bounce, and launch that out so it'll break your shin, and then hit the ground. It would gave you maybe an extra second to react next time, buy a harbor freight engine hoist

So many folks overreacting. Did a great job. DIY is a lot of ingenuity, figuring out how to do a lot with a little, and a little luck. You got it done brother! Good looking table. And I guessed 600lbs but i had just watched the one titled 1100 lbs build so i had a good hunch.

please .... PLEASE!!! When using an angle grinder, throw the sparks towards yourself or in your own general direction. Blades catch frequently and un-expectedly and will always jump in the direction opposite the sparks. The way your using that angle grinder, ONE DAY IT'S GOING TO JUMP INTO YOUR STOMACH AND DIS-EMBOWL YOU!!! This is the most common most un-safe habit I see self taught people develop. By throwing the sparks towards that nice new leather smock your wearing, the grinder will jump AWAY from you when it catches. Please correct the habit? Please, for your own well-being?

What ninnies were you concerned about the ones commenting about safety and how this man could have seriously injured himself, and was showcasing a dangerous way to flip this table. A good job is not only making a project but doing it safely too, otherwise it's only half a job or at worse an incomplete job because your injured or dead.

You know, I don't know why some of you got upset about his having his wife back up the car while he aligned the metal push rod against his tow receiver, if you noticed once aligned properly he backed off a good piece before he had her backup, so he had plenty of room to get out of the way, should something go amiss and from the video, I'd say this isn't the first time he's had her do something like this, so if he trusts her, why are you so angry about it, it's not you back there! Now my comment on the video is wow, what a hell of a big table. I built a welding table a few years ago, mine is only 2ft x 2ft and My top is made out of 1/32" sheet metal with some diamond wire steel underneath to lend it some more strength and I used 1 x 1" square tubing. I think I might have around $50.00 into mine and I'd guess my whole table might way 10 to 15lbs, but looking at your welds you've got a lot more experience than I do when it comes to welding. I never even tried to weld until I retired from the PA dept of corrections and I did 13.5 total years of military active duty before that and worked as computer operator/technician for 15 years or so, between them. So, my hats off to you, if you feel you need a table that large just to weld, you must be looking to do some big jobs. Of course my garage isn't even half as big as yours and my basement doesn't have the kind of room to have a table that large either, but if I did, I might want a table bigger than what I have, but it works fine for the small jobs I do. I'm going to keep watching your channel, if only to see you smack yourself in the head again, that was a hoot! I've done stuff like that before, but I don't think I'd have the balls to record it and put it out there for all to see, but it did make me feel better knowing I'm not the only one that has dumb shit attacks every once in a while. KUDOS!

😂🤣😂 First thing I noticed. I watched my dad set numerous shirts and pants on fire working on his race car when I was a kid. In hindsight, he was nuts. This guy a little nuts or giant balls☝🏼😄 Table is massive for a residential garage. Beast
If you're going to do this, spend less time talking and more time behaving like a professional. I can assure you no one really cares that you lost your job and no one cares about your grading scale. What people care about when they take the time to watch a video is learning something. A few tips: Wear appropriate clothing. Don't weld in shorts & tennis shoes. Don't try and handle material that weighs 500+ lbs without using a forklift and correct rigging. I'm thankful you didn't lose a foot or break a leg during that exercise. I could go on but that's enough punishment for your novice skills except for one last observation: A true welding table doesn't reside on castors and isn't made from thin-wall tube. It's a precision instrument that sits solid on a true floor. You could get by with 1/2" plate for the surface but ours have always been 1" with heavy wall square tube for legs. The surface is trued, (in some cases within .010") from end to end, side to side. And last, a true welding table weighs in at well over 3000 lbs. They're built not to move, flex, bow or change shape at all regardless of the amount of heat. You have constructed a 'hobby table', not a 'heavy duty welding table'. And learn how to remove mill scale. You will find welding much easier. Be safe if you're going to try this for a living.
I am hobby level and yes it is heavy duty only on a hobby level. I am not trying to do this for a living. Thank you for the advice.

We've all been a little hard on you because this video basically scares everybody to death because it appears it's only a matter of time before you get pinned or crushed. That point having been made, it's clear you have good hand/eye coordination, you are very talented, and you can do anything you set your mind to do--welding, framing houses, fixing anything broken. Keep up the good work, and kudos to you for accepting helpful criticism and your ability to learn from it. I'm sure you have a wonderful family who is lucky to have you as Dad. Cheers my friend.
