I learned a new quote recently "Don't let your schooling get in the way of your education." Mark Twain. I love that quote bc people place way too much focus on what happens in the classroom and some of the most happiest people I know do very well in spite of their education level. My favorite I saw on TV recently was a student that had a scholarship for an education but went into debt for a NYU education unable to secure employment? Too often they loose sight of the real prize to LEARN !
@MotherLodeBeth I think they did downsize their lives quite considerably. They got rid of a house with a pool, a 2nd car, boxes & boxes of stuff... Granted they're not living in a shack, but they definitely don't have excessive amounts of stuff and they don't want a lot of stuff to enter their lives (which is why they consider carefully anything new that enter their home). He's brewing organic beer... perhaps not essential to life, but not exactly "stuff".
I love this couple. And even though I'm of African Descent and they are not, i feel more related to them than my own people, as far as their philosophies go. Keep up the good and wise work. Bless.
@dr1345 I don't think they really went to an extreme. They simply got rid of a house with too much maintenance (e.g. with swimming pool they rarely used) in a city where they had to drive too much (which made them unhappy) & moved to a town where they can walk most places & into a home that is still fairly large (it's not a tiny home like some I've featured). They also left jobs they didn't like to start up jobs related to things they enjoy. I don't see this as extreme, but living deliberately.
I love how they said there was no community. Then he was working 60-80 hours a week is that where the community thing went. I'm glad they found what they wanted. I live near the road you were on Bell Rd. Lived in our last house 22 yrs. It is true most of the time it good to have two cars. It is a big city like the 5 largest in the US. Like I said glad they found what they wanted.
People just don't seem to understand downsizing. I used to live in a house on a acre with a nice heated shop full of stuff and also big payments and utilities bills. Now I live in a 5th wheel with solar panels mostly off the grid. I paid less for the camper than one of my house payments not including utilities. I am much happier, healthier and less stress now. I totally get these two. The weird part is, I think I know exactly where they live. I'll have to look next time I am in FOCO, lol :)
I agree about having less stuff. I've lived in Phx for 50 years, Bell Rd. is my exact neighborhood, and have never wanted bigger house, better vehicle... no Jones to keep up with. That is an internal belief issue not external influences. There are other reasons to not like Phx., heat in the summer, crowded in the winter, but bigger better status - nope. From October to May there isn't a place much better than Phx., no snow, perfect weather for outside activities.
@herculesAML Good question. Actually that's part of the story that I didn't cover and would like to. Brad started an organic brewery in Fort Collins (CO) called Funkwerks. And Anda is using her law background to write legal guides for people who want to open breweries or wineries.
It's like......"a sect of people are rediscovering our nomadic natural instincts." That thought just came to me after watching 200 videos like this one.
The people that retained those nomadic instincts haven't necessarily stopped using them - they kept moving to new areas, colonizing and exploring different cultures. I think the wanderlust is something that many people suffer from, especially out West, but aren't aware of what it is.
@homesteadingqueen Interesting point. Though Anda and Brad didn't move into a tiny house. Their house is smaller than the American average, but not that small. They are more focused on getting rid of their stuff and not adding more stuff to their lives.
5:24 holly crap...there are pictures from Sibiu, Romania :D and some saxon style houses from Romania :D anyways, I'm a huge fan of your channel, Kirsten! greetings from Romania :)
I loved this video because I agree with what they have done and are doing and I really like that he brews beer. I am a home brewer and have been for a few years now and have thought about doing commercial level brewing. It is encouraging to see that someone has done this also.
@ElnAlter They're not claiming to living in extreme simplicity. So while they may have given up a house with a pool they are still using things like Skype. As for youtube, I posted the video. I also wouldn't say they're actively trying to promote their lifestyle. I was the one who asked if they would do a video interview with me after reading a comment they left on one of my videos.
I've been in Phoenix. There are malls and conglomo-businesses everywhere. It's doesn't have a friendly, "homelike" feel at all to me. Plus, the temperatures in summer are unbearable! It takes a fortune just to cool a house in the summer in Phoenix.
@Suwai0303 "simplicity is freedom." The sooner people learn that in life the better off they will be..... I made it a point for most of my adult life to not have PETS... I met my wife and she started collecting Animals... Its been nothing but one massive never ending burden / headache...Under no circumstances should someone who wants freedom have animals... they are a burden to mobility and finding places to live/rent on the fly..
@speedbmp I recorded the interview via Skype (they were in Colorado; I in Barcelona) so the sound is not great. But there story is so good I hoped it wouldn't matter too much.
Something got lost in the translation for me..... Fort Collins to escape the strip malls and congestion of Phoenix? The only difference is no saguaro, javelina or desert temperatures. In the Rockies? Go east of Fort Collins and you will be in the mountains oh.... in maybe another 1500 miles when you get to the Appalachians. Fort Collins is a city of 120,000 people. How do you find community and simplicity in a city that size? You bring your dreams and your beemers from California, Chicago, NYC, or Phoenix to live along with all the other dreamers in a suburban sprawl that stretches from Fort Collins around hundred miles south to Colorado Springs.
Rick Nygren As a resident of Fort Collins, I have to say it doesn't feel that large. First, about 30,000 of the population are college students, who are condensed to a very small area on and around campus. Second, it's a SUPER bike friendly town. This allows for selling your vehicle without sacrificing much, which is simplifying in my book. Third, there is a strong community in FoCo. Dances, art, local food, beer, and local theater all happen on a weekly basis downtown. Buses run from the top end of town to the bottom in about 30 minutes. If you want to move 10 miles out of town, you can live in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains and still be close enough to buy groceries. It's quite a wonderful place to live :)
I just did the same type of move - instead of being 5 miles from the mall now we are about 20 miles away, but this small town we live in and the three that are adjacent to it tend to keep themselves disconnected from the suburbs that are just minutes away and you can feel it - more walking friendly, less concrete, more historic buildings, more focus on small, local festivals with a mom and pop feel instead of a corporate sponsored "market" at the mall, etc...
@clydelaz . That's the way to live. Cities are actually better than suburbs because you don't need a car, especially in the NYC/NJ area. You are very lucky to live in that area.
This same trend is happening in the Urban East Coast. It used to be if you lived in a city it meant that you could not afford the suburbs. Not any more. I live in a 450 sq ft studio in Newark NJ. I don't need any more space. I don't need a car I can walk or take the subway most anywhere I want to go. I can walk to pro Hockey or Pro Basketball, Minor League Baseball, 2 symphony Halls for concerts, Museums Libraries plus I am a 20 minute subway ride to New York city.
@dr1345 I agree, the secret to frugality is to cut your expenses, not move into a box in the woods. Just smart food shopping, and cutting expenses can increase your cash by 30 percent
Great video! Really good story, and well edited as well. If I could, would it be OK if I just gave you one pointer for the sound? If you put a short fade in and out transition on your audio clips, it gets rid of some of that 'popping' effect you get when a sound bite starts. I only bring it up because it looks like you put in a lot of effort here and it has worked for me in the past. Again, great job! I liked it a lot.
Cheers to you too Paul! I am having a crisis right now...I have too much space...but hubby feels that we are just right! But if I were single, I could do 350 square feet NOOOO Problem! LOL!
Saying that people in a certain area all HAVE TO buy bigger cars and bigger houses because "it's the thing to do" leads directly to the fact that people who claim to be minimalist are the ones who think about these things more than anyone.
We were kicking around the idea of trading the 06xB 30K miles for a used prius 11 29K miles we would have to rcoup $16K eventually and that is no easy task I realize all the things that would have to occur for us to get that money back. If I drove 100K miles a year I might recoup the cost but I don't so getting a newer car would be sheer vanity and vanity just does not pay. We shall keep the so called old ride and make do. Besides it does what I need it to just uses little more fuel.
LOL. Finally people are getting it slowly but surely as they fall into debt, anxiety, and depression.... We live in Wickenburg AZ in a 1000 sq foot house with no morgage. It is a nice feeling to be able to have freedom to do what we want to do with it and not own a bunch of crap you don't really need or enjoy. Cheers!
I hate the suburbs because there is no art and no one talks to one another. It's so depressing and weird and impersonal and anonymous. Literally no one talks to their neighbors. Sometimes you don't know who they are.
I LIVE IN SUN CITY,AZ = I OWN IT CLEAR BUT THERE STILL ARE = PROPERTY TAXES,ELECT, REC.FEES,ASSOCIATION FEES = THESE KEEP GOING UP = I AM WORRIED = WHAT DO I DO IF THEY GET TOO HIGH AS I AGE = I WOULD BE SO HAPPY TO BE FREE FROM ALL OF THIS = BUT, WHERE WOULD THAT BE IN AMERICA = I NEED TO BE NEAR DOCTORS & HOSPITALS = SEEMS HOPELESS !!
@LithiumLogica That is true but I still would want the 5 or 10 acres and most of it would be woodlands for my heating needs. I would not have a lawn...just pasture for some animals. Maybe some wildflowers that come back every year.
so, I am really curious about the finances. How do they earn money? How do they sustain themselves without jobs? And how does their retirement work? Or did they give up on it also?
I love Fort Collins CO, that's so much nicer the Phoenix, no offense to anyone living there. Also the New Belgium brewing is in FC and makes some of the best beer in the world. I love the look of your house.
The one I don't understand is the tradition of buying gifts all the time for every little reason. Want to see what is useless go to a thrift shop. I think anyone that buys another person a coffee cup should have just taken that money and burned it there are more coffee cups at thrift shops and yard sales than anything. Their new house didn't look that small to me. By British standards, it was really big. They seemed to have plenty of stuff too. And they now only have one car between the two of them? Hmmm.
I HAVEN'T BEEN TO F.COLLINS IN OVER 20 YEARS = IT WASNT CHEAP THEN & I DON'T SEE HOW IT CAN BE CHEAPER NOW = I WANTED TO LIVE THERE = LOVED IT BUT EVEN BACK THEN,I COULDN'T WALK TO ANYTHING = PERHAPS THESE PEOPLE LIVE NEAR THE COLLEGE ~
The only thing I would want bigger is "raw" land. Right now I live in a trailer park and dream of having some land someday. I want at least 5 acres, 10 would be better. at least haveing an acre of land would be nice. Some day I will make that dream come true.
The simple life is awesome! Though I really hate what these people say at the beginning, "I felt it was a battle in Phoenix, you have to have two cars, keeping up with the Joneses" what horse-shit. It's your decision if you decide to integrate into a capitalist society and have things just because others do.
Just let go...FREE YOURSELF really you only need one chair per person and a bed. a lapdesk or clipboard is enough for a desk. plastic or cardboard boxes should be enough to store your other odds and ends. When people own a house, it's not long before every room is filled. Stop buying things that don't expand your mind.
im gathering material to build my house it might take me 3 years to have all the material and have enoff money to buy land and build my house. bigger cost to much to heat and cool and is not better. just build smarter double duty rooms and good storage im building a 20' by 20' home with a loft i have a 5 year plan to be free of all my bills and to be able to work from home and to do all the things i love
Also, they are both so eager to speak, and keep speaking on top of each other...this was a hard one to listen to...quite annoying. But I do appreciate this channel very much.
AwesomeMiles8 what do you call non materialistic woman?of course that sound to me a macho woman ,lazy,a woman should be gracious..with family and house, today you can find a lot of those you call materialistic woman ,one of those who don't go out with children's ,but with dogs ,to leave dirty cliches everywere...etc etc a hippie who don't even care ...that is why we are so down to the drain ,no family no nothing ..and I don't said that because of me ,but because those mentality ...there is no mothers ,no woman at home..anymore...sorry if you don't like my comment ,,but really that woman in the video ,I sure is lazy ....
Right! and while we are at it, WHY do we need to have babies? Why do "you" need/want a "mini-me"? To do things the right way, that you got wrong? I challenge you ALL to stop having BABIEs!!
i remember watching this way back, this is a classic vid for the minimalist movement. However, i have accumulated alot of shit, and i need to downsize, lol.
Also they have the same amount of shit that every house has. Q: What's important to have A: um a bed, a sofa, table, computers, kitchen stuff. Hello! that's everything!?!?!
I think you went to extremes..or may be you right people don't take care of themselves, how they going to really care for a house,,that way of living seems to be orwelian....
@homesteadingqueen Close. A Skype video call. Best I could do given our distance, though perhaps the sound would have been a bet better if they'd had carpeting.
Doesnt seem a simple lifetsyle as much as a change in environment. Simple anything to me means less. Traveling isnt a simple lifestyle to me. Neither is creating beer or anything someone doesnt need to actually live simple.
The western states have the lowest population. If that's what your looking for, you could research places in the United States that have what your looking for before moving out of the country. Places in the eastern states would be okay to if you moved to a rural area far away from major cities.
There is no "worry free living" in US anywhere. As soon as you "own" property municipality is after your money in form of property tax and they use it as an escape code every time they need money. Just jack up the tax. You want worry free living? Move to another country that doesn't have property tax and you really OWN the land that you bought.
Sterotype much? We get it, you two didn't care for Phoenix - fine. Move on. But you don't have to put Phoenicians down on your way out. It's tacky and it's shallow.

Can we get an update on this couple! I'd love to hear from them again to see what's going on now.

Saying that people in a certain area all HAVE TO buy bigger cars and bigger houses because "it's the thing to do" leads directly to the fact that people who claim to be minimalist are the ones who think about these things more than anyone.
terrible audio. what's with that high pitch sound? why wasn't it fixed in post?
minimalism

Okay, although that doesn't really answer the question. I'd prefer their new accommodations any day of the week.
It’s funny how they mention everything else but not hot scotching the heat that they really want to get away from....
so, I am really curious about the finances. How do they earn money? How do they sustain themselves without jobs? And how does their retirement work? Or did they give up on it also?

Welcome to Calcutta.
Their new house didn't look that small to me. By British standards, it was really big. They seemed to have plenty of stuff too. And they now only have one car between the two of them? Hmmm.
I get your point. I started to watch their video several times but found them annoying. lol...I think your post sums it up well.
LESS stuff =MORE space, MORE time, MORE money
PHX is totally smoggy. Oh and the water supply is full of heavy metals. And too hot.

I love my crock pot...lol. When I need a coffee cup I go to the thift store!
awesome video.... what's going on at 2:53?
Does no one else hear the moan?
+Caleb Elizondo We hear it, but you're the only one paying that much attention to it, or reading that much into it.
What's wrong with the sound? I thought it was my speakers, but it's not. :(
The simple life is awesome! Though I really hate what these people say at the beginning, "I felt it was a battle in Phoenix, you have to have two cars, keeping up with the Joneses" what horse-shit. It's your decision if you decide to integrate into a capitalist society and have things just because others do.
@kirstendirksen It was very good, and despite the sound I did watch the whole thing and hit "Like" on it. :)

"Valued" by comparison, you got that right. So, you're a materialist? Bigger (and more) is not always better, my friend.
im gathering material to build my house it might take me 3 years to have all the material and have enoff money to buy land and build my house. bigger cost to much to heat and cool and is not better. just build smarter double duty rooms and good storage im building a 20' by 20' home with a loft i have a 5 year plan to be free of all my bills and to be able to work from home and to do all the things i love

once they get older their view will change; especially if a kid comes into the picture.
@Gunnarsguns people who live in mcmansions are not in debt.
Le Corbusier chairs? Is that living "simply?"
Quality, eh? BMW M6 V12 would have been a good replacement for their M3.
When i buy stuff, i buy tools for a transition workshop :D
@kirstendirksen I was just being silly, really (empty room, because they're minimalists). The sound is fine, to be honest. :)
Right! and while we are at it, WHY do we need to have babies? Why do "you" need/want a "mini-me"? To do things the right way, that you got wrong? I challenge you ALL to stop having BABIEs!!
So where are they Today & do they hv a Family now ?
i remember watching this way back, this is a classic vid for the minimalist movement. However, i have accumulated alot of shit, and i need to downsize, lol.
Very creepy. My left ear is going WTF?
who are you to say they didnt have stress?
Buy a cheap piece of land drop 2 shipping containers for all the stuff.
Who are the Jones' and who wants to be like them???
@zekehooper dream it! do it! best of luck with it.
Also they have the same amount of shit that every house has. Q: What's important to have A: um a bed, a sofa, table, computers, kitchen stuff.
Hello! that's everything!?!?!
D: the beeping sound
I think you went to extremes..or may be you right people don't take care of themselves, how they going to really care for a house,,that way of living seems to be orwelian....
super like!!
Yep. I'm curious to know what's so "shitty" about it, though...
@homesteadingqueen Close. A Skype video call. Best I could do given our distance, though perhaps the sound would have been a bet better if they'd had carpeting.
How is there new condition in any way shitty?
Is the sound "funny" because they are filming in a large, totally empty room? LOL
@iwantosavemoney . Good plan. You'll make it!
Doesnt seem a simple lifetsyle as much as a change in environment. Simple anything to me means less. Traveling isnt a simple lifestyle to me. Neither is creating beer or anything someone doesnt need to actually live simple.
bigger heart is better !!! more inteligence/reflecting is better!!
The western states have the lowest population. If that's what your looking for, you could research places in the United States that have what your looking for before moving out of the country. Places in the eastern states would be okay to if you moved to a rural area far away from major cities.
Oh no!! I thought they where going to go into a tinny house maybee a 320sqt
There is no "worry free living" in US anywhere. As soon as you "own" property municipality is after your money in form of property tax and they use it as an escape code every time they need money. Just jack up the tax. You want worry free living? Move to another country that doesn't have property tax and you really OWN the land that you bought.
thought the interview was interesting though
Rofl, simple life? They're using skype and youtube to promote their hipster lifestyle.
Huh?
Sterotype much? We get it, you two didn't care for Phoenix - fine. Move on. But you don't have to put Phoenicians down on your way out. It's tacky and it's shallow.
Terrible audio. Couldn't get thru the video.
Why does Jesus require all this worship? Is he insecure or something?
