    The final verse of 'Once in royal David's city', with descant by Sir Stephen Cleobury, from King's College Choir's new album 'In the bleak midwinter'. The Choir of King's College, Cambridge, is directed by Daniel Hyde.
    The album reflects a Christmas that was unlike any other in recent history. Much of the music on this album was heard around the world as part of the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, a service that has been broadcast live from King’s on Christmas Eve every year since 1930.
    But for Christmas Eve 2020 in the face of a global pandemic, the continuation of this uniquely long-running tradition was not possible - not sung live or with a congregation in the Chapel as well as the global audience who have long listened from around the world. Instead, a full service, with lessons, carols, organ voluntaries and prayers, was recorded in an empty Chapel. For its millions of listeners, the broadcast meant the continuation of a Christmas tradition in a year when so many were without their friends and family, and without so much of what makes Christmas special.
    This album contains music from the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols together with a selection of specially recorded tracks. It marks the beginning of a new era for the Choir of King’s College under the direction of Daniel Hyde, with this his first full album at King’s since his appointment in 2019.

    Not in that poor lowly stable,
    With the oxen standing by,
    We shall see Him; but in heaven,
    Set at God’s right hand on high;
    Where like stars His children crowned
    All in white shall wait around.

    I don't know about others thought but to me they make best choirs to my ears . And the most important element is their pipe organ effect. It goes same as vocal but a little bit polished. Feels like angles plays trumpet with choirs . I've never seen such pipe organ in my life. But everytime I hear it's sound I feel like I have moved to another place. And I love this songs when I can't sleep in night this songs clam me down and make me sleepy. Thanks for your previous effort. God bless .

    "Once In Royal David's City" is one of the greatest Christmas hymns ever written, and it sounds especially great when it's sung by a British church choir.

    It was hard to source this CD in the US (even on Amazon! we had to wait for stocks to arrive) -- but God, is it worth the wait! This version seems to have been recorded in an empty church and that made the acoustics and the sound very full, and with a timeless echo. I totally enjoyed this CD.

      The "empty church" is King's College Chapel!!

      King’s College Chapel the home of the choir and surely the most cathedral like chapel anywhere. You walk in there while they rehearse if you are lucky enough. You can’t see them in the choir. Voices of angels come from that stupendous vault.

      @A-Plus Computer Services the choral tradition at King's is unlikely to change as the original statutes laid down by King Henry VI state sixteen male voices. The choir was running by 1449 and has been the same since.
