He also lost a fight to Jerry Quarry one of the best contenders of that era. He took on all comers and only lost to the very best.

Ali was the best I ever saw, and the most iconic athlete of the 20th century. Completely transcended sports.Never got enough credit for his toughness. Had his best years stolen from him, and never whined about it. Btw, he was great with the fans, and when he was at his home in Cherry Hill NJ, would answer the door himself and chat, particularly with college kids, of which I was one when I saw this fight at the Garden, as well as Ali-Frazier I on 3/8/71, boxing's best night, ever. Floyd=total class, and a great fighter in his prime, hugely popular guy. RIP. Thanks to both for the memories

Patterson is an overlooked fighter. I personally think he was a great talent.
Steve Mitchell - Patterson was ofcourse, a world heavyweight champion, (twice infact) with several defences, late 50s early 60s.He had some good KO wins.

Patterson was a natural light-heavy competing with much bigger guys ,kudos to him. His hands were easily as quick as Jean Pascal's or Adonis Stevenson's and yet the remarkable thing is his hands are only marginally faster than Ali's, who was much physically bigger as is clearly evident to any one who has watched the fight, I think he had about 30 pounds of weight and about 4 inches of height, truly astonishing.

I have been a boxing historian, pretty much since my Aunty bought me A Pictorial History of Boxing by Nat Fleischer, 1965. Aged 12 years.
Not too long ago, I was intouch with a fellow Brit. who was a big fan of your Dad .
He travelled to USA more than once to visit him.

He asked if he could spar with your dad, but Floyd always sensibly declined.
I saw your dad defeat Henry Cooper in London 1966 (on TV though) Did you come over for that one ?
I was really impressed by your dad, his skills and punching power. He knocked Cooper down twice I think and Cooper finished un-concious.
Henry Cooper said he thought Patterson more skillful than Ali. He should know, having fought them both !
I was very pleased to buy an autograph of your dad. Signed at the Canadian Olympics 1986 I think it was.

Isn't it just astonishing that this is Floyd Patterson's last ever fight? What a remarkably youthful and valiant 37-year-old Patterson we see here. Hardly an embarrassing loss by any means to one of the greatest fighters of his day, a man who outweighed him by 25 pounds and was 7 years younger. Actually a pretty even fight until round 6. What a man who knew how to retire with class, unlike Ali, of course, who, sadly and as we all know, hung on way too long. You've just gotta admire Floyd Patterson.
I like Patterson way more than ali. Ali acted like a jackass outside the ring. No class. Just vanity that cost him his brain. Patterson was a gentleman and the better man.
+clip11 Thanks for the great post. Patterson v. Holyfield is a great hypothetical match-up I've never thought of before. I'd have to give Patterson somewhat of an edge in punching power and Holyfield somewhat of an edge in endurance and all-around athleticism--and possibly a BIG edge in ability to recover from punches. And you certainly can't fault either guy's fighting heart.
I agree that Floyd's loss to Ellis is hugely disputable. But I do think Quarry beat Floyd in that second fight. Both Quarry fights are great.
Daveed Anderson you probably don't like yourself. Anyone that knew anything about Ali knows a lot of his antics were to sell tickets and marketing himself. Lot of fighters got fights and made money just from his mere name.
Ali carried him. Could have knocked him out much sooner if he wanted to.

I think he meant that it was becoming a one-sided fight once Floyd's eye was cut and swelling. Not that it was one-sided the whole fight.

Patterson definitely landed some good shots. I didn't think it was that one-sided, either. But you can tell Ali didn't take Patterson very seriously.
JN Hutchi Ali said Floyd was the most skilled fighter he ever faced. He was taking Floyd serious but he couldn’t land the punches he normally would cause of Floyd’s head movement.
Agree ,Ali didn't leave first gear until round 6 .Ali toyed around and it still seems difficult for Floyd to land flush but he did get a couple good shots in.
Denny Hala no it was to be his last fight, but he wanted to avenge the heavyweight showdown of seven years earlier. Plus he wanted to win the fight badly so he could challenge for the title in 73

Floyd Patterson was ahead on points through the sixth round. When he returned to his corner, you can see by the camera angle, he blew his nose into the towel & this inflated his left eye shut. Detrimentally affecting his vision, the TKO decision was made. “Never Blow Your Nose” was the mistake that cost Floyd the fight…
Loved Floyd. Met him once and he was a real gentleman.

Patterson was a great fighter and it should be remembered that he gave away at least 30/40 lbs against Ali, and Liston was really a lightheavy/cruiserweight. Awesome style and speed.

Floyd, May your Dad Rest In Peace Eternally with the Lord!! What a True Gentleman!!! I met your Dad at Resorts International Casino when your Dad had a Boxing Team that he coached out of Yonkers. The Yonkers Team were Amateurs, and they fought Steve Traitz Boxing Team out of Norristown, PA......just outside of Philly! I got to talk with your Dad for awhile before the Fights, and then after the Fights too in a Private Dining Room in REsorts International in Atlantic City! He was Great to talk too, and I was training at Willie Reddish Gym, the trainer of Sonny Liston, early training of Joe FRazier....and Gil Turner among many others. Do you remember your Dad training the Yonkers Boxing Team out of New York?? It was around 1979 or 1980 in that area. Great Man your Father was!! He is in my prayers!! Sincerely, Ray!!

Floyd was only really knocked out by one boxer, namely Liston. Ingo knocked him down 7 times, but he wasn't counted out, but was on his feet when the referee stopped the fight in the 3rd round.
Good stoppage with the cuts Patterson had, but he was giving Ali all he could handle up until then.

Patterson was hurting or at least disturbing Ali with body punches. Though lighter than Chris Byrd or James Toney Patterson was a much heavier puncher. One can tell by this video that Patterson knew how to use his legs to drive home punches.
I brought up Byrd and Toney because they were once considered, not too long ago, to be the best pure boxers in the heavyweight division.

The Greatest said in 1965 and 1972, that he was not going to knock out Patterson, whom he called "The Rabbit." Ali said that he was going to punish him.

He did not say that in 1972, only 1965. In 1965 Patterson made it like a war and he was defenseless. By 1972 both of them had settled and they used to attend at each other's matches. Neither Ali nor Patterson promoted the 1972 fight by trashtalk. It was a casual press conference.

No way no how was this a one-sided fight! What fight were these Ali-fans seeing? That cut eye injury prevented a rough tough fight from developing, one that could easily went to Patterson. NOT a one-sided fight, damn it!

Ali was taking it seriously, he just wasn't quite as good as in the 60's.
And in 65 Floyd had an injured back, so this version of Floyd, although older, was in some ways better prepared for the fight, while Ali wasn't quite as good as he used to be.
Shame it had to be stopped, really good fight for Patterson
Ali enters this fight 30 years of age, this is Patterson's last fight at 37 years of age and is in great shape. Ali at this time was 38 wins 1 loss, (to Fraizer), Patterson is going to retire after this fight with a record of 64 Fights, 55 Wins, 40 KO's, (more KO's than Muhammad Ali had his entire career), 8 losses 1 draw. This was Ali's 11th fight after his time in jail.
Floyd Patterson was a great fighter, especially, considering as people have pointed out, how light he was. His peek-a-boo style is fun to watch, and he certainly is on his toes here. I like him.
I do not believe that Muhammad Ali is out of shape here, a comment people are making about him have more weight that usual in this fight. Muhammad Ali is heavier this fight to have more power to his punches. In their first fight, before the prison time, Floyd Patterson when 12 rounds with Muhammad Ali. The weight is a smart calculation by Dundee and Ali.
Patterson had just won 9 fights after his loss to Jimmy Ellis.
Truth Lives Looks to me like Ali's in good enough shape only to win. Let's face it- how could he take this fight very seriously. He knows Floyd had virtually no chance. It's pretty obvious that he's kind of bored. All that's got nothing to do with Floyd, though, and my hat's off to him for coming out here in fantastic shape and giving it all before he hangs 'em up for good. Great figure for a small guy that probably never had much business in the heavyweight division to begin with.

In 1952, Cus 'D Amato helped Floyd Patterson gain the Middleweight Division Olympic Gold Medal at the Helsinki games. Patterson used the style that Cus 'D Amato helped him with, the peek-a-boo. He then became the youngest Heavyweight Champion at that time in history, beating a super boxer, Archie Moore, at 21 years old.
Then right before Cus 'D Amato's death he literally adopts a person who breaks Pattersons record for the youngest Heavyweight Champion in 1985, Mike Tyson. Mike Tyson also used that same peek-a-boo style.
Patterson was too light, Tyson was too short.

The starting weight for the devision then was 175 pounds, and the average weight for a heavyweight in Ali's entire era was only 199 pounds. Anyway how can you say Floyd shouldn't be in this fight; he dominated the first three rounds, and won four out of the seven rounds in this fight. Floyd was faster and had better reflexes than Ali, it was just Ali's size that outdone him. Ali weighed 30 pounds more than Ali.

Muhammad Ali called Floyd Patterson the best boxer that he ever faced, and Patterson was a great boxer. What is making the statement of Ric's not real stupid is that Floyd Patterson's average weight was only around 188 lbs, and that was probably after beefing himself up a little to qualify. Floyd Patterson's body is a lighter frame. When he faced heavier opponents, like Liston weighing 215 lbs, same height, he would lose by the boxing power of his opponent. He is a more a cruiserweight classification which is anyone under 190 lbs. It is correctly thought that a person of 190 lbs. will have a problem fighting a heavier guy.
Weight classifications are there for a reason. It is amazing how well Floyd Patterson did considering this problem, and shows that he was a super boxer, and why he chose the peek-a-boo style, that in my opinion, (which really is nothing), helps a person who is too light or too short win.
I like the way Floyd Patterson moved in the fights I have seen.

He was by no means out of shape. In many respects, old Foreman was better than young Foreman. He was far better conditioned, he knew how to conserve his energy, he was far more durable and harder to KO. And he only won that belt out of pure luck. Moorer had beaten him up all night. IF he wouldn't have been stupid to stand a trade, Moorer would have won by a landslide.

Patterson was doing better than his last fight with Ali until round 6. Patterson is a tough man but really did not have enough speed or strength to handle Ali.

Comikajr Kadu hey, Floyd was a champion and a fine fighter. He threw the kitchen sink at Ali in this fight and won some rounds. I don’t think Ali was in shape as evidenced by missing so many shots early on.
In the end, he wore Floyd down and ultimately would have knocked him out cleanly had the ref not stopped the fight.

Alot of people don't know this but ali gifted floyd this fight to help him financially you know put a little love in his pocket😉 & the great part about this is muhammad allowed floyd to use his training camp in deer lake to get ready for this fight. imagine letting your apponent use your gym helping him get ready to kick your behind ali had a great heart.

Ali's fights against the Cus D'Amato trained Patterson are probably the closest indication to how Mike Tyson would have done against Ali.
Patterson was 189 pounds, tyson was 217 with crazy power.

Ali was catching him with the uppercut when Floyd bobbed , he wasn’t seeing it , the eye would have been closed before the 8th was over no need to take any more damage trying to get that one big punch , it would have been a blind shot at best, close your left eye and duck under your hands in Pattersons style and see how much you don’t see. He couldn’t block those shots with his left arm . It was a good stoppage.This was a transition time in boxing, to what Ali called the dinosaurs 15, stone and up stone=14 lbs, 29lbs is a lot to give. Floyd was a true warrior Author Macanty was a good referee, one of the best in my opinion.
Many of the Tysonites were not even born during the era of Muhammad Ali. As a matter of fact, Tyson was only six years old when the second Ali-Patterson bout occurred on September 20th, 1972. Patterson lost both bouts by way of TKO in the twelfth (1965) and seventh (1972) rounds. And, furthermore, Tyson was not even born when Ali and Patterson fought for the first time on November 22nd, 1965.
188 lbs is not a big heavyweight. Tyson and Frazier never weighed anywhere close to that. Frazier was at his best weight around 205 but fought at higher weights. Tyson around 215. Patterson was, indeed, small.
MAN, this is like LOW speed compared to the first match. Floyd catching him WAAAAY more than the 1st one.
Because Floyd doesn't have a broken back in this match that is why its more competitive.
ali was great outside the ring but him constantly backing off during early rounds is not my cup of tea.

One of Ali's bad habit , which he didn't have in his prime, is that he never trained and performed like he COULD have if he was fighting someone who posed a legitimate threat. He knew he could beat Floyd Patterson, which is why he didn't train too hard.

Anzor Saayev Ken Norton won by a split decision, and it was a non-title bout. Ali's jaw was reportedly broken in the second round, and he went the distance! There are still a lot of Ali haters, today, and he's been gone for over a year, now.

Tyson's management picked the fights, not Tyson. Let's put prime Patterson in the ring instead of Mike Spinks, result would have been the same, Patterson knocked out cold. No doubt on that.

Patterson fought far too long. This was a pointless rematch. Of course, it's hindsight but the Jimmy Ellis fight would have been the perfect time for Patterson to retire. When you have made something virtually your whole life it is so hard to leave it behind. As would also be the case with Ali as everyone knows. As an aside, when Patterson won the Heavyweight title for the first time, in 1956, he weighed all of 182 lbs. Patterson was a tremendous fighter, he just wasn't a real heavyweight. He likely would have been one of the greatest light-heavy champions of all time. But you can't fault him for going after the biggest prize, and winning it twice. Hard to argue with the thinking.

Patterson and Ali fought much too long!! If I think about it too long it makes me sad..That Parkinson's disease ravaged Ali..He was 74 years old when he died, but he looked 104..It devastated his body so terribly bad 😭 😭😭😭😭😭

Just finished reading a bio on Patterson. Floyd's back was killing him throughout this fight (slipped disc). As for Ali toying with him, I don't believe it. He said that he threw everything he could at Floyd and he just wouldn't stay down.

This is the sequel. He honestly looks a lot better here. He was aging fast at 37 and fought his hardest. The man was amazing. This here was his last fight.

It was a good way for Patterson to end his career. One last shot at the Heavyweight crown. He fought hard. I don’t think the ref should’ve stopped it like he did.

Just looking at what frazier and patterson were able to do with similar inside fighting styles, I just feel like tyson would have been Ali's kryptonite. Unlike joe, either hand could knock you out, he also hit way harder than patterson and combinations like that from tyson would have been devastating. Let's be honest, muhammad ali had his hands down and got hit way too much throughout his career. Styles make fights, imo stylistically tyson is a bad match up for ali. Just like a prime george foreman would have been a nightmare for tyson.
