When this fight took place in 1972, I was but 21-years old. I had become a big Patterson fan after his tremendous comeback win to regain his Title against Johannson. So did a lot of my boxing friends become fans of Floyd Patterson, not only his comeback win, but the way he conducted himself inside and outside the ring. We mourned after his two losses to Liston, then Floyd comes back yet again with big wins over good fighters, a young George Chuvalo being one of those wins. Then his loss to Ali, really turned many of us against Ali, for his despicable treatment of Floyd before the fight and during the fight. His lack of respect for the former champion was offensive to many boxing fans! Patterson had injured his back during this fight, severely, but continued on, doing the best he could under the circumstances. Floyd was not done yet with boxing. His hand speed had not slackened any, he could still throne those 3-punch combos with lightening speed. Floyd Patterson was a positive influence for young men entering into the boxing world. He never belittled an opponent. before, during, or after the fight was over. He was a quiet and reserved man. He was the kind of man that a father would want his son to grow up and be like. In short, Floyd was a gentleman inside and outside the ring. Patterson was one of several heavyweights that were involved in a boxing tournament to determine the new Champ. Ali had been stripped of his Title for his "refusal" to answer his countries call for duty (Draft). Floyd fought Jerry Quarry two different times in this Boxing Tournament. I saw both fights, and many boxing fans felt Floyd got robbed in the first fight that led to the second fight with Quarry. For myself, and others, I've spoken with about these two fights with Quarry, we thought that Floyd won the first fight that was ruled a draw and the same felt the same way in fight two. Floyd was "robbed" in both fights! A short while later, Floyd would fight the winner of the Boxing Tournament, Jimmy Ellis. Once again "ring robbery" reared its ugly head. Floyd broke the Champ's nose in the first round, dropped him in round 14, only to have a"clear cut" knock down ruled a slip. A referee, Harold Valan, that must have been drunk, crazy, or watching another fight to come up with his 9/6 win for Jimmy Ellis. Floyd was, in reality, a 3-time Heavyweight Champion, another ring robbery against Patterson. Floyd would have several fights "stolen" from him by bad or blind judges! The Joey Maxim fight before Pattersons wins the Title, his two-fights with Quarry being highway robbery cases, and this fight with Jimmy Ellis where the attending fans would scream, shout, and stomp this terrible call by referee Harold Valan. Yeah, I was and still am, a Floyd Patterson fan even after he lost his title. We, his fans, would cheer his wins, and mourn his few losing efforts. His conduct as a man and Heavyweight Champ was second to none! That's why he was loved and cheered for!
After this fight, Floyd fought Pedro Augusto at the Singer bowl in Queens 7/14/72 with a win, ko in 6. then a loss in the Garden 9/20/72, 7 rd. tko to Ali. Floyd never officially, retired. he resumed training at his home in New Paltz N.Y. & began training young fighters amateur & professional, All the while he stayed in splendid condition.
Pedro Augusto fight was just a tune up fight for Floyd. He got hit when he bobbed the wrong way and it blinded him. He had to knock him out quick then and he did stop him soon after, but that punch broke a bone between Floyd's eye and nose. When he fought Ali, Floyd was ahead on points. He got hit on his eye by Ali very lightly and Floyd blew his nose between that round and the next round not thinking and his eye got get swollen and closed instantly. You can see it happening if you look very closely. The fight was stopped because of it.
Probably right, but even at cruiser he'd be giving up a lot of weight as they rehydrate after the weigh in and come in at over 210 lbs. Still, Patterson with his quickness would be a tough fight for any cruiserweight.
I think the cruiserweight would have been a great division in the 1960s, because, besides Patterson, there also would have been fighters like Jerry Quarry and Doug Jones, who were both excellent but small heavyweights.
Floyd IS an all-time great. Floyd was the youngest HW Champ in history until Mike Tyson. He was the first to regain the title, something Dempsey, Louis, Walcott, Liston and Frazier all couldn't do. He did so with one of the most devastating left hooks in boxing history, against a guy who had floored him 7 times and still outweighed him by 15-20 pounds
There were many great golden era contenders who are constantly forgotten, it's a shame they didn't have multiple belts like nowadays or I feel like we would've had a lot more world champs. But Ali, Frazier and Foreman gatekeeping the lineal belt swept everyone else under the rug.

He was never counted out off his feet. People with a glass jaw or an weak heart would stay down when they are hurt. Floyd was a natural middleweight fighting top heavyweights. He used to walk around under 175 even in his championship years. He was around 168 in 1980's. That was his natural weight. He fought as a heavyweight because the heavyweight is the top of boxing world and he wanted nothing less. He could have fought in middleweight and Lt heavyweight,but he wasn't interested.
Best way to define Floyd Patterson was a 'dignified man.' Just a fine individual. Olympic champion......twice heavyweight champ. Solid fighter. The one guy he just couldn't match up with was Liston. Very competitive with everyone else. Not a GREAT heavyweight in the class of Ali or Louis, but so what. Floyd never boasted he was that great. Very professional. Nice intro by John Condon. Fight machine just so happen to be fighting in the Golden Heavyweight era very underrated.. in his heyday he fight everybody dude literally fought 7 fights in 1970 alone went 20 rounds strait with The Great Joe Frazier and 15 rounds with Ali both in their prime.. I would have liked to see Floyd get a shot at Frazier after this win in '72. Frazier fought Stander and Daniels in '72, both who were barely top 20. Frazier was severely diminished after his win over Ali and although he probably would have KO'd Floyd, it would have been more interesting than either Daniels or Stander.

I assume Floyd wanted another shot at the championship but does anyone think he would have handled Frazier? A year later it would have been Foreman. He fought Liston twice so he was not afraid to tackle the best.

We forget about some of the great fighters outside the USA during that era. Bonavena, Chuvalo, Bugner, etc.

Patterson must’ve been in superb condition here. He danced on his toes the entire fight.

Fight machine just so happen to be fighting in the Golden Heavyweight era very underrated.. in his heyday he fight everybody dude literally fought 7 fights in 1970 alone went 20 rounds strait with The Great Joe Frazier and 15 rounds with Ali both in their prime.. He fought 68 fights in just 12 years that’s 5 1/2 fights per year all by the age of just 33 sheesh that jus show his durability drive and will took on any challenge and gave his all every time… Rip Ringo
I would have liked to see Floyd get a shot at Frazier after this win in '72. Frazier fought Stander and Daniels in '72, both who were barely top 20. Frazier was severely diminished after his win over Ali and although he probably would have KO'd Floyd, it would have been more interesting than either Daniels or Stander.
Frazier didn't want Floyd neither did Marciano. They BOTH ducked Floyd for some reason. Marciano retired rather than fight Floyd.
Joe ducked MANY fighters including Floyd in the 60's, then Ron Lyle and Earnie Shavers in the 70's.

Floyd beat Oscar. That was a golden victory for a comeback fighter. The native New Yorker lasted a long time. Floyd did just fine in spite of losses. He is missed.

Bonavena was not the shadow of that fight with Fraizer, Ali, Chuvalo was very much aware of his lack of training for this fight and Patterson won very well
Hard to see how Patterson won unanimously. Floyd did not do enough offensively. Ringo knocked down Patterson early. My scoring card was 4-4-2. Draw.
This film (Colorized) is too dark to tell but Most of Oscar's punches are missing or landing on Floyds gloves. You might want to look for the original B&W WPIX Broadcast. I saw the original here on the tube and had a ringside seat for the live fight.
Kind of tough competing for a title shot when the top contenders in your division are George Foreman and Muhammad Ali.
I assume Floyd wanted another shot at the championship but does anyone think he would have handled Frazier? A year later it would have been Foreman. He fought Liston twice so he was not afraid to tackle the best.

Condon announced some fights after Johnny Addee died, but not too many.

+Kevin Cordoba-Llanos Condon did a good job. The fellow that took over permanently for Johnnie Addie was Joe Bostic, who was no great shakes. But Bostic had to follow Addie who was obviously a legend.
Dana Preis Yea I loved John Condon as the Knicks announcer, better than all the shitty NBA announcers of today. He did a good job commenting the Norton vs Quarry fight and the Carlos Monzon vs Tony Licata fight.

And boxing at the Garden was amazing in those days. I used to love the pre-fight introductions of all the former greats. So amazing.

Incluso con Alí bancó los 15 rounds y si el árbitro hubiera mantenido a Alí en su rincón mientras contaba, no hubiera ocurrido la tercer caída antes de la campana. Aguerrido y con huevos bien grandes tiró dos veces a Joe Frazier. Un verdadero guapo del ring.

Dejando de lado el fanatismo y las "tonterías", Bonavena después de Alí ya no fue el mismo, Patterson al momento de esta pelea tenía 37 años y Ringo sólo 29, pero no lo pudo vencer, puso "huevos" y todo lo q se te ocurra, pero para ser campeón del mundo hace falta mas q eso.
