Alternatively you could also play the next installment in the series, NFS High Stakes (PC version) it has all the tracks and additional ones and some of the cars from NFS III Hot Pursuit. It also has a great career mode, car damage and the hot pursuit mode.
Try dgVoodoo 2 as well. It can force per-pixel lighting (it's an option) with some games. It might make vertex headlights look smooth. (Haven't tried NFS3 yet, but it works for me in CMR 2, and makes headlights look smoother.)
Can you change the HUD icon's locations in High Stakes? I am really used to NFS3's default HUD, so the few things different in High Stakes confuse me a lot.
I'm not a programmer, hacker, or even high-level computer-power-user but it seems to me that it should be possible for one (who is a good coder) to mod in a config file that would save the users' button-mapping and HUD positional coordinates so that they don't reset every time one restarts the game or changes resolution. (I could just be talking out of my butt though.) Am I mistaken? Would such a mod be super-difficult to program?

Just one thing though. the cops on the pc version are really disappointing, (they're quite slow) and i thought that maybe, there could exist some sort of option in nfs wizard, that would add rubberbanding to the cops, trouble is that i don't know if there is such a feature in nfs wizard, (or if such mods that add said rubberbanding exist), (i'm on linux(cachyos) btw.) Do you know how can i add such a thing in the game?
The latest version of the modern patch actually increases the difficulty of the opponents. I personally find it to be very challenging especially if you increase the laps because the longer the race goes on, the more relentless the cops become. Now, maybe you're a god at this game compared to me and you might still find it too easy. 🤷♂️
First thanks for these tips! I am looking for tips for performance, like which car is recommended and especially which tuning is. I just picked the Diablo SV for tournament without tuning it and it just never reached max speed in any race, nor the 5th speed altogether. Could anyone suggest any guide addressing these topics? Thanks
I like setting all my cars on high engine tune. Rear break balance, and soft suspension. In the case of the Diablo, it's a heavy car (at least in the game) so I would reduce the aerodynamic downforce and increase the gear ratio to high.
I'm trying to set this up, but every time I try to map the controls to my keyboard, the game freezes. It's not crashed, but it's not recognizing any inputs from my keyboard and I can't back out of it. Any ideas?
You could try a different version of the Modern Patch. After copying FEDATA and GAMEDATA to your local drive, go to the modern patch website and look on the side for a section called "Achives" and there pick 2016 and scroll down til you find a slightly older nfs3 modern patch like 1.5.3. Download, unzip, and copy everything into the folder that has FEDATA and GAMEDATA in it. I hope this helps.
That explains a lot. The vista patch did get the game to run nicely on a 60Hz display but only in Direct3D mode, not in Glide which looks better. I wish the Modern Patch did the same.
@@GTXDashYeah, I spotted this with the screen's G-Sync fps counter. What's funny (and maybe disappointing) is that there's no limit in pause menus, so you at least get a nice and smooth rotation around the car in the background.
Does anybody have a solution for Win 10 ? I can go to the main menu but when I start the race, black screen and game freezes. :( I already installed the widescreen patch
I'm not familiar with the widescreen patch. The modern patch already includes support for widescreen. Maybe do a fresh install by copying the folders from the CD that the modern patch's website mentions before applying the patch itself.
The best car you can get in the game is a Skyline. My dad had a Skyline when I was a kid. These are very ordinary cars. Now I did not say the game is bad, the controls are great, the gameplay is solid. It's just that if they simply called this game Underground and left out the "need for speed" branding, then I wouldn't mind. But it seems like every time EA makes a racing game, they just slap on the NFS brand no matter how unrelated these games are from each other. NFS used to mean something. Now it just means "EA Racing Game".

Haven't played NFS 3 Hot Pursuit, but it looks really fun,
Virgin NFS Underground 2 and Most Wanted 2005 vs. Chad NFS 3 Hot Pursuit.

Try HP2010, MW2012 and Rivals, those 3 are the closest to Classic NFS.

Unfortunately, no. I wish it did. It would make things a lot easier. I had to download it all from nfsplanet I think.
