  • After the first look it was time to strip it down, paint it and change those awful axles.. Here's how it went!
    Check out the video, please leave a like and a comment (these really help the channel) and don't forget to subscribe, to see what I get up to with this little Jimny.
    If you want to get hold of one of these, I'd recommend using the official store. The service is very good. If so, please use my affiliate link as you'll pay the same but I'll earn a tiny commission to help keep the channel going)

    4:06 When I tried to do all of that on mine, I kept wishing that WPL would sell the C74 as a KM kit. Throw in some upgrades, but let me choose my own electronics, and let me assemble it so I can paint it without having to take the whole body apart.

      I totally agree. The electrics are awful and may as well be in the bin. The sooner the kit is available, the better.

    Mine was out of phase as well. Did your exact same swap with the steel driveshafts and it’s helped it loads.

    • @rcpie
      @rcpie  8 месяцев назад

      Yeah, makes a huge difference.
      WPL told me that they'd asked their drive shaft supplier to investigate the problem. It's sure straightforward and a bit late, though!

    I got mine on original release from WPL and have been busy painting and detailing the body, not even run it yet !
    Looked at my driveshafts yesterday and was not only shocked but delighted to see they were actually in phase ! Not sure if anyone else’s is the same, could kind of understand if it was a later release but this was an original pre order 🤷‍♂️
    Any way once I finish the detailing I will see what it’s running like and will probably still upgrade to metal.
    Great video, cheers, Mike 🤗

      That's really interesting. WPL told me that they were sorting out the drive shaft issue with the factory to change the design. Odd, indeed.
      I'm intrigued to see how you've painted and detailed it.
      Thanks! 👍🏻

    The Jimmy is looking good! I'll be interested to see how much of an improvement the drive will be. Thank you for the wheelbase measurement. I have a Rock Van with a wheelbase of around 160mm and my son has a trx4m with a wheelbase of around 150mm. I'm thinking the Jimny body might fit with some modifications. I love WPL for what it is but I wouldn't mind having a more capable Jimny. Looking forward to the next video!

    • @rcpie
      @rcpie  8 месяцев назад

      The drive is much better but the suspension and the top-heavy nature are the things that let it down now.
      I'd be interested to see one on other running gear but it'd be a shame to get rid of leaf springs.

      I did brown on the roof and pillar lining. Dark, slate blue and dark grey on the upholstery.

    You did a wonderful job on the paint and fine details of it, thank you for pointing out that it is a true 1/10th, just curious on what that little hatch is on the roof of the vehicle, if it was on the real one or not.

    • @rcpie
      @rcpie  7 месяцев назад

      Thanks a lot. I was a bit disappointed that I couldn't gloss coat it but outs not turned out badly.
      I've absolutely no idea what that hatch is for. Very weird indeed! It doesn't seem to have been on the real one from what I can see. It's surely for some intended add-on from WPL.

    What are those driveshafts? I still haven’t seen an aftermarket for c74 specifically. I just uploaded a video as well.

    • @rcpie
      @rcpie  7 месяцев назад +1

      There's a couple of links for them in the video description.

    I've built a couple of WPL metal kits and put a HobbyWing 1080 with a DumboRC receiver on each one, with different levels of modding/trimming needed depending on the model (the Land Cruiser and the URAL truck). I'm planning on getting this Jimny, but it seems it doesnt have enough space for that ☹.

    • @rcpie
      @rcpie  7 месяцев назад

      Yeah, I think space is the main limiting factor for the electronics. There's really not much room. Perhaps adding a box in the back might work.. it'll just mean more wiring complications.
      I think the bigger issue is the suspension. The leaf springs are so stiff!

    • @sgecko7
      @sgecko7 7 месяцев назад +2

      Maybe a little more weight can help with the suspension... but that could affect the motor and ESC hehe... oh well... I think I'll wait a little longer to see what mods people come up with and to see if WPL releases it as a metal kit. On the surface, the only thing I kinda dont like is that, unlike most of their other trucks, nothing on the body opens.

    A pintura ficou boa, mais teria que pintar a interna porque o vidro é transparente vai dar para ver que ficou mau pintado por dentro, é uma opinião amigo.👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👏👏👏👏👏💪💪💪🤜🤛

      You're right. The inside of the shell was very quickly painted to cover the white but I might go back and spend a little more time and effort on it. 👍🏻

    Hi, interesting video, may I ask where the metal drive shafts are available from. And are they straight forward to fit.

    • @rcpie
      @rcpie  8 месяцев назад

      I've added some links to the video description for buying the drive shafts. They're very easy to fit, just use thread lock, as with any metal to metal connections.

    with the board you just mustve been unlucky, ive never had any issues with any of mine, not trying to say their cheap board style is the way to go, id swap it out in a heartbeat for a real esc, but its definitely enough to get around, but the driveshaft problem really sucks, mine is exactly the same, ive been thinking of maybe trying LDrcs driveshafts just to get around the issue on the cheap as i have 2 ldrc unimogs in parts, i just dont remember if the diameter of the holes for the connections are the same

    • @rcpie
      @rcpie  8 месяцев назад

      I agree. I've hammered boards like this in the past and am quite happy to use them when using other stock electrics. Sometimes there's just a fault in the material that could never be foreseen. It was a shame that WPL continued to say that it must be my fault but at least they're sorting it out for me.
      The driveshaft issue is a joke and shouldn't be allowed out of the factory. It can't or certainly shouldn't be a surprise.

    Hello! When you switched to another receiver and drive, do you think it worked more tactilely on the throttle at low speed? What did you use as a substitution? Thanks

    • @rcpie
      @rcpie  4 месяца назад

      I didn't really get chance to try the original radio/esc due to it catching fire. The one I put in was out of a Fayee FY003, I think.
      The upgraded WPL electronics are, in my opinion, quite poor, so I suspect the basic ones are pretty bad. I'd move straight to a 3rd party if I were you.

    I would flip the motor wiring and both axles probably, or is there any reason why they choose gearbox output on the right while the pumpkin is on the left when it comes to rear axle?

    • @rcpie
      @rcpie  8 месяцев назад

      I considered this. The only problem with it is that the front pumpkin would then be on the wrong side and the drive shaft at an even sharper angle.

    why axel swap is a must? What it helps with? Btw mine had driveshaft done right

    • @rcpie
      @rcpie  4 месяца назад

      The axles are just generally horrid. They're flimsy, the gears are poor, there's no proper mounting for dampers and the drive shafts have to cross over the centre line.

  • @AzPoorBoys
    @AzPoorBoys 7 месяцев назад +1

    So i switched the pumpkin like you explained. But my axles spin in opposite directions. Any clue why?

    • @rcpie
      @rcpie  7 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah, if you flip one, you've got to flip both. I tried it but decided that the horrible angle you get on the front drive shaft is even worse.
      In some axles you can flip the internals so that it counteracts the axle flip itself. Not this, though.
      Better off just getting new drive shafts.
