They both had great voices, but I'm not so sure how similar they were. Greg was silky smooth whereas John had some rough edges. But they both worked beautifully. I can picture the two of them having a beer in rock & roll heaven.
I can't say I like Lake's version of this song better than Wetton's... but Greg will always be one of my favorite vocalists. He was amazing with his own songs. Asia was very lucky to get such a high caliber stand-in for this concert tour.
This is a absolute fan-tastic song I am a Yes and ELP fan what a combination💗 Asia certainly is the best band I wish I could of seen them RIP Greg❤ your memory will always be in all our hearts
Peter Banks, first guitar player on Yes before Howe (RIP 2009), then Chris Squire (RIP 2015), both Keith Emerson and Greg Lake (The Maestros RIP 2016), John Wetton (RIP 2017). We are losing our heroes too fast. :'(
Sucks, and the one guy I thought would have been first ( Ozzy) is still alive and kicking...:)...Gallows humor...I have to laugh or I'd burst into tears...Squire, Wetton, Lake, Keith Emerson, George Harrison, to name a few...We're lucky to have shared our lives with them...They filled, and continue to fill, our lives with the sounds and words we lean on in times of strife...When you think about it; it's profound to ponder it as we are eased into our own autumn years...Thanks Artist, wherever you are!
Prog mash up of all time! So much music history passed through this moment in time. Bravo to Greg for pinch hitting with very little notice. Definition of a Pro
Bought this on an album years ago, it still has the power to thrill.Absolutely fantastic rock anthem and performed by such great names, RIP Greg, this will live for ever and great to see this video, thank you for sharing it with us....
Amazing performance, and more amazing back story of how Greg Lake got up to speed on Asia's numbers in just a couple of weeks to meet the tour's schedule. How he could stand playing that amputee looking stumpy bass is still beyond me. But he did have to stand up holding it, night after night. He's one of my real rock and roll heroes.
I think Greg Lake sang this song WAY BETTER than the original!! Such a talented and lovely man. Greg Lake, you are surely missed. Rest in Peace, Lucky Man! 😢❤
I always thought it was amusing that Wetton replaced Lake in King Crimson & Lake replaced Wetton in Asia. They are so similar in many ways. Both great.
I just watch this live version for Steve Howe's guitar solo. The studio version seems to cut out right at the beginning of what could've been this great solo.
Wow Great tune, Great performance, thanks for posting this. Loved Asia so much in the 80s... this band introduced me to Steve Howe. THE KEY-TAR ROCKS!!!
Japanese fans are the fkn' BEST! I would love to play in Japan one day. These people REALLY love the music they listen to. They live in the moment when they're at a concert. Unlike most Americans who have to record everything on their cell phones to try and impress their friends on social media🙄
Released in 2001: "ENSŏ' KAI" (LIVE IN TOKYO 1983) - Geoffrey Downes / keyboards - Steve Howe / guitars - Carl Palmer / drums - Greg Lake / bass, lead vocals
4 words = "BRING BACK THE KEYTAR"!! And, didn’t realize it before but that was a converted Minimoog!! Wow. Well - Keith Emerson was there (in Moog spirit! 😄)!!
complicated times back then, egos flying and Greg Lake takes over for JW and then they bust up until Astra, a tough period early to mid 80s with the changes in music were rampant, nevertheless both Greg and John are musical legends, may they both rest in peace....
He joined Asia with only 2 weeks' notice to learn the songs, and was using a teleprompter for the lyrics. It was just a temporary thing because Wetton was ill (possibly his recurring alcoholism at the time).
fantastic my friends used to sing it to and say . when my looks have gone how many nights I sit beside the phone .....25 years gone my looks ain't gone n don't sit beside the phone
I remember watching this on late night TV back in 1984 when I was in high school. Oh well, at least the camera angles kept us from seeing the TelePrompTer Greg Lake was using to read the lyrics.
I heard Greg Lake sing during the Works tour in Detroit in 1977 and his voice was incredible. I heard Wetton in Detroit in '82 on the first tour and his voice wasn't great and he could NOT hit all the notes on some of the songs from the album they had just recorded. I've heard him sing live on other videos and Wetton's voice was much better. In any case, two great and similar baritones.
Greg Lake and John Wetton were both amazing vocalists. Miss those guys.
Rest in peace, Greg Lake and John Wetton. I know that these two great bassist
are jamming together somewhere in heaven!!
@superbulldog81 With Keith Emerson
Se detestaban Greg y Wetton , mucho celo profesional
For one brief moment it was refreshing to see Greg Lake and Carl Palmer together again.........
Yes and then you realize that Asia's music didn't have the quality of ELP's
For one brief moment, Steve Howe remembered he was in a *rock* band...
Probably one of the best rhythm sections ever
This was great. Not easy for anyone to fill dsomeone else's shoes. Great job by Greg Lake here! Miss both Greg & John!!!
Asia…amazing super group, and with Greg Lake, WOW!!!! No better choice than him to fill in for the great John Wetton!! Both RIP🙏🏻🙌🏻
What was great about having Greg Lake join Asia was that John Wetton and him had a similar vocal timbre so the formula worked perfectly.
Robert Fripp hired John Watton for that exact reason after Greg left King Crimson
@@martijnstuart95 No, Gordon Haskell and Boz Burrell replaced Greg in King Crimson.
They both had great voices, but I'm not so sure how similar they were. Greg was silky smooth whereas John had some rough edges. But they both worked beautifully. I can picture the two of them having a beer in rock & roll heaven.
Agree the first time I heard Asia i thought Greg was the vocalist
@@cheaplaffsarefree They were good friends.
The moment when Palmer points the sticks, and that iconic opening riff gits you. One of the best songs ever!!
TWO/THIRDS OF ELP IS HERE AND THATS ALWAYS GREAT!
Great performance!
My 4 year daughter loves this song, (dragon on album cover) she calls it the dragon song. :) Music will always live on.
I can't say I like Lake's version of this song better than Wetton's... but Greg will always be one of my favorite vocalists. He was amazing with his own songs.
Asia was very lucky to get such a high caliber stand-in for this concert tour.
"So now your looks are gone and you're alone." Perfect melancholy.
This is a absolute fan-tastic song I am a Yes and ELP fan what a combination💗 Asia certainly is the best band I wish I could of seen them RIP Greg❤ your memory will always be in all our hearts
Goddamn it, I'm in tears again. Hits me right in the 80s.
RIP, Greg Lake.
amen
Yeah, 2016 shocking year for losses in the music industry
And the guy he replaced, John Wetton, be with God chaps!
Peter Banks, first guitar player on Yes before Howe (RIP 2009), then Chris Squire (RIP 2015), both Keith Emerson and Greg Lake (The Maestros RIP 2016), John Wetton (RIP 2017). We are losing our heroes too fast. :'(
@@MikeNorth0101 John subsequently came back to the band. This concert was broadcast live on MTV back in the day.
Greg’s beautiful voice and sensibility are a big plus here.
And now John Wetton has passed. We're of an age where those who helped create the soundtrack of our prime are leaving us.

Great track, Greg in fine voice here.

yep
We Love you Greg Lake !
Prog mash up of all time! So much music history passed through this moment in time. Bravo to Greg for pinch hitting with very little notice. Definition of a Pro
Greg Lake demostró acá por qué siempre fue uno de los grandes. Sin duda alguna, uno de los más grandes bajistas-vocalistas de todos los tiempos.
Bought this on an album years ago, it still has the power to thrill.Absolutely fantastic rock anthem and performed by such great names, RIP Greg, this will live for ever and great to see this video, thank you for sharing it with us....
Damn, Greg Lake and John Wetton gone forever.
Even the gods have to leave us eventually.

I love the keyboard playing in this video, thanks for the post.
They were both lead singers of a band called King Crimson before Asia
BEST VIDEO EVER! Seriously, I've seen many versions of this song live, but this one kicks ass! Nice video man!
I think Greg Lake sang this song WAY BETTER than the original!! Such a talented and lovely man. Greg Lake, you are surely missed. Rest in Peace, Lucky Man! 😢❤
Oh my Clapton they're all so ADORABLE here.
I always thought it was amusing that Wetton replaced Lake in King Crimson & Lake replaced Wetton in Asia.
They are so similar in many ways. Both great.
Not like it hasn't said before as well, but Steve is a guitar God!
Since first hearing this song was hooked on Asia still like my Asia album both CD and record get lot of play time
I just watch this live version for Steve Howe's guitar solo. The studio version seems to cut out right at the beginning of what could've been this great solo.
Wow! How wonderful to discover there is someone else who loves Howes solo as much as I do, All the best

Still Blows Me Away, awsome guitar workings, a great song from an amazing group.
Thanks for posting these! This show was at the Tokyo Budokan on December 6, 1983 and MTV and Westwood One Radio simulcast it.

Really great SH solo!

I’m enjoying this so much more now than I did in the 80’s!!

oooooooh what a lucky man, he WAS!!!!! (See what I did there….lol)

Greg Lake y John Weeton están en el cielo, porque sabían cómo transportarnos a el. Gracias 🦅🦅

My big question is "How the fuck did they ever come up with this type of rock sound"? BLOWS MY MIND!!

Greg Lake in Asia ? Who would have thought ??
this was his only performance with the band
Actually, I think he said in an interview he did three shows in Japan.
I am only here because of Gregory :3
He joined Asia with only 2 weeks' notice to learn the songs, and was using a teleprompter for the lyrics. It was just a temporary thing because Wetton was ill (possibly his recurring alcoholism at the time).
They seem to be a
similar cog in several rock bands. RIP to both. Sigh!
It was great¡ I love this band.
ive watched this about a thousands times over and when geoff downes comes in with the dang keytar man, gets me everytime.
