Greg said in his autobiography that he most appreciated his voice. I agree, with that and everything else he brought to the table. What a once in a lifetime talent. RIP Greg. We love you 💖
It's a rare bird who can claim 3, count 'em, "3" of the most powerful vocal influences in Rock history. The voice of The Crimson King, the front of ELP and after John Wetton left, he took the front of Asia.
When I was a HS senior ELP came to Jadwyn Gym at Princeton University. A couple Of hours before the show I went to the ticket office on a whim to see if my girlfriend and I could get some cheap seats. The guy said the show was sold out but some lady just returned 2 tickets a minute before if I was interested. He said they were front row center. I smiled but thought it was a cruel joke. But they really were. We raced home to change and just made it into the packed place before the start. Ushers had to use flashlights to get us to our seats which were folding chairs on the floor 5' from the stage. The only 2 seats that were empty. A middle aged lady (and her teen son) who returned the tickets sat next to us. I thanked her wildly and suddenly the stage lit up, a very loud synthesizer began to play a sequence with no one in view and the band members took their places to thunderous applause. It was a magical experience and no one sang " Oh what a lucky man he was" louder than me!
Comments say this was recorded in 1974. This was great music. I'd go back to the 70s and stay. Even repeat my 4 yrs in the Marine Corps 1973-1977. I was a lucky man
I was in 1973 I saw ELP on concert long beach ca arena I was so lucky man to see them a live Rip I still listineng My first concert when I came from Mexico I never forget❤
I saw them when Tarkus Came out and they premiered Pictures at an Exhibitoon! Mahavishinu Orchestra opened! It was outta sight night at the Long Beach Terrace Theatre!!! I was 17
Greg's sonorous voice and musical creativity are unequaled. I could listen to him for hours. Too bad I have to write my own stuff. But he has certainly been an inspiration to all of us who write music on the acoustic guitar.
ELP was an eye opening band for me. I was in awe of the atypical music and lyrics. From that point on I was hooked on progessive/experimental rock. Getting old isn't so bad. What hurts more than personally getting older is seeing ones idols of youth slip away. I am sad that Keith and Greg are no longer among us, but thankful for all they contributed.
The Moody Blues impacted me the same way; they were the fathers of prog rock and once I heard them I gravitated toward all of them -- ELP, Yes, Pink Floyd, et al. I feel the same way as I watch more and more of my rock idols pass away; I'm only glad I have their albums and these videos to take me back to that time -- not to re-live it but to have the music.
I grew up with these guys,...... when none of my friends even knew who they were,.... I havn't felt like this since my mother died,..... Good night sweet prince
From Crimson King to ELP, all their music makes you want to go on some grand adventure. Lucky Man makes me imagine going on a road trip in the 70s, not a care in the world, no burden on your shoulders, just like a lucky man.
Lady Supermarket with an apple in her basket Knocks on the manager's door Grooning to the muzak from a speaker in a shoe rack Lays out her goods on the floor Everything she's chosen is conveniently frozen "Eat it and come back for more!"
I saw Emerson Lake and Palmer a couple decades ago. Greg Lake's voice is forever burned in my memory. One of the best songwriters and vocalists in R&R history. XOXOX
I can envision everyone sitting around that campfire at night, hearing the cracking kindling~logs, feeling the heat in the dark chill of the night with Greg’s ethereal voice landing straight into our hearts,,,rapturous💫⭐️💫
This is a gem from ELP's transitory period from folk-rock to prog-rock. And it's taken on a new significance, now that, like the Lucky Man, a bullet found Keith Emerson, and no money could save him. It has particular significance for me: this was the song a band was playing at my junior-high "prom" when I asked a girl I had a crush on if she wanted to slow-dance with me, and she replied, "No thank you." What a lucky man I wasn't! Thanks for posting, and rest in peace, Keith Emerson.
wait what ...ELP had a folk period? ELP hit the ground running full speed prog rock. This sucker made it onto the album because they needed some filler. Keith hated the idea of using it until he heard it dolled up in the studio. And the Moog solo was an improvised first take of the first time he ever played the instrument!
As if it doesn’t mean anything now? All art evolves, one just needs to evolve with it. If you fail at recognizing new art, you never understood it to begin with.
I saw Emerson Lake and Palmer on their tour following the release of Works Vol. 1, in 1978. It was on a 1st date with the last great love of my life. Well into the concert, Greg Lake came out and stood on a small rug under a single spotlight. His rendition of Lucky Man captured the audience perhaps moreso than all the other music that evening. Rumor had it that Lake would stand on a small, $18K Persian carpet. Great song by a Lucky Man indeed. It was one of better evenings of my life.
What a magnificent time to be alive and have such wonderful music! No other generation can claim this time of life! We boomers had it it all!
We were lucky
1971 was a year
15 with my twin brother waiting for our elder brothers number to come up we debated tarkus steared us together. Oh what a lucky man I am.
Yes we did
Yes❤❤❤

And what a voice it was!
Didn't know he wrote an autobiography.
@@courtneysands6646 He did! I would recommend it. He was a very kind man.
Rip Greg Lake great song
Hard to believe he wrote that when he was only 12. Amazing talent. Plus, chewing gum and singing at the same time... that's the true gift!
Greg Lake had such an incredible voice---most underrated singer in pop/rock history IMHO!!
nyterpfan Oh no! One of the greatest Bands in the 70th! No great festival without them! Superstars!
still sang that well even while chewing gum
nyterpfan never such truth has been said
He wasn't underrated
ELP aint pop rock
Greg was a lucky man to be able to write and perform like this. Wish he had lived longer.
Man, Lake has a voice like a bell. What a trio of giants.
This song still brings goosebumps and transports me back to being a teenager.
sandycurrie108 I read that he wrote this song when he was only 12 years old.
Just a perfect singing voice (I know nothing of music, just what I like).
With a voice and musicianship like Greg’s you don’t need trills and runs and pyrotechnics.
So true!
LUV.U..THX!

The Voice R.I.P Greg Lake! There was nobody like you!
I just read that Greg Lake wrote this when he was 12! 😯❤
I really LOVE THIS BAND !!! Emerson, Lake & Palmer are simply fabulous 🌟
One of the original supergroups -- at least on the prog-rock side.
His voice was so distinct and great. One of my favorite songs. R.I.P.
Beautiful song from a beautiful man. Miss you and love you Greg.

The Show will never end!!!! Thank´s to Keith, Greg and Carl; still the best of all.

R.I.P Greg, and thanks for the Music.
Back when musicianship and talent meant something.
That's right no autotunes needed! Raw talent
I love him so much. (Comin' from a Beatlemaniac.)
Still does. Everyone is scared to even try this now is the truth.
Absolutely spot on my friend!

The most underrated musician EVER
What a gifted musician. Miss him.
Me too
En verdad fuiste un hombre con suerte al haber podido entrar en los corazones de tanta gente! Toda una vida dedicada a la música! RIP !
So young. And what a voice!
This is so beautiful I cry of pure joy. Contrast that with heartless/soulless auto-tuned vocals of today and I feel numbness of heart.
The music of my youth lives on forever.
Awesome Version! Amazing voice and talent. Rest In Peace Greg Lake
This alternate melody is quite simply put, superb.
The velvet voice of Greg Lake, compliments it like a fine wine and grade A choice cut of Kobe..
Saw ELP in 1971 at Thiel College in Greenville, PA. What a superb show. R.I.P. Mr. Emerson. You are now in Rock and Roll Heaven.
