    Awesome Eric!
    I haven’t ordered mine yet, as I am pretty sure the Wifey & daughter are going to have one sitting under the tree for me in a couple of weeks.
    I think it is SO cool that you were out there on ‘day one’ getting it installed in the dark. For whatever reason that made me smile...
    As I am yet to dive into the HKSV world, I’m really anxious to see firsthand how notifications & interactions work with AppleTV.
    Have a great day, and keep the content coming!

      Even though I had a Ring Pro it was setup through HomeBridge and when I had birthday party for my son everyone was so surprised when a video popped up on my Apple TV showing whose at the door.
      Now with HSV and facial recognition it will announce whose at the door (barring they are in my photo library). I will miss my Echo Show features with Ring integration but maybe one day Apple will come out with a Echo Show version for the HomePod.

    @ 8:09 what o have done for other mechanical door chimes that don’t fit is removed the plastic case and used the double strip tape to fasten it inside the chime box. You just have to make sure it’s not on any metal as it will short the exposed board after you remove the case.

    What about the actual thing you care about with doorbells - and that's answering people over the intercom? How fast do notifications arrive? How fast does iPhone connects to the video stream? How much lag is there when watching the stream and talking to people? Any realtime demonstration maybe? I'm having some 1-2+ seconds lag with my Eufy doorbell, and it would definitely be nice to have a doorbell with less lag… Thanks!

    It looks wonderful (at least for a Gen 1 product.) If I didn't live in an apartment building, I'd buy it. Although it should include a temperature sensor. The fact that it can't see the bottom of the door due to it's slightly narrow field of view (to let me see a delivered package) isn't too serious since HomeKit secure video provides video clips for motion at the door. I wish they would come out with a version that fits in the peephole slot in my apartment building door. That would double their potential customer base. One minor problem: it's missing a "doorbell" label under the button. But I can fix that.

  • @patmartimucci7770

    Most important question how long does it take to get a notification and how long does it take to connect. How about audio quality??

    • @EricWelander
      @EricWelander  3 года назад

      Connection and notifications is right on par with the Logitech Circle View camera in my experience, which seems pretty fast, but hangs every once in a while. The notifications might come faster than my Nest but there are a LOT of variables in the chain to send any push notification to any Apple device (I know this as an app developer).
      Audio quality is good. You can understand people, but like most microphones, it picks up a decent amount of wind noise when it's blowing. I don't think there's a filter on it for that.

    • @TheNameOfJesus
      @TheNameOfJesus 3 года назад

      HomeKit doesn't use *any* bandwidth. All video processing is done locally. HomeKit *Secure* *Video* uses bandwidth. I'm fairly sure you meant the video connection to Apple with HSV uses too much bandwidth. Are you saying that the data compression used by Apple isn't good enough or are you saying that all online storage is a bad idea regardless of camera size? If you tell us a product that you are happy with I might be able to understand what point you are making.

    • @myHomeKithome
      @myHomeKithome 3 года назад

      @@TheNameOfJesus Admittedly my comment was a bit unclear. Wi-Fi-based devices in HomeKit require a hard-wired power source since Wi-Fi uses a relatively large amount of energy to send and receive information. Until we see a video doorbell that connects over Bluetooth or one that works with a base station, we won't see a wireless video doorbell anytime soon. Hope that clears up my comment.

    • @TheNameOfJesus
      @TheNameOfJesus 3 года назад

      @@myHomeKithome Your manner of speaking is polite, non-argumentative and humble. I'm impressed. But I'm also confused. You don't have to clear up my confusion if you don't want to. Are you looking for a battery-based doorbell? I think that's what you want. Why do you want that? Every doorbell in the world has voltage available, so why wouldn't you want to use that power source? And as long as you've got a power source, why not use Wifi? Isn't Wifi better than Bluetooth for transmission range?

    • @myHomeKithome
      @myHomeKithome 3 года назад

      @@TheNameOfJesus I do agree that wired connections are better. There are definite use cases for wireless. For example, if there isn't existing wiring and/or running wiring isn't aesthetically pleasing or even feasible.

    • @TheNameOfJesus
      @TheNameOfJesus 3 года назад

      @@myHomeKithome I guess we agree. Let me add that for reasons Apple has never stated, it does not support battery-based cameras with HomeKit. (If this has changed recently, I'm not aware of it.) Some manufacturers have got around this by creating a wired hub that Apple thinks is a camera but is a hub talking to a wireless camera. I don't think anyone knows why Apple won't support battery-based cameras.

    My NEST has horrible delays with notifications, and since I’m all in on HomeKit it’s time to change. If you don’t mind, I have 3 questions.
    1. What happens with HomePods(or mini), when someone approaches the door...and then when they actually press the doorbell? Can the HomePods act as door chimes?
    2. What kind of delays with notifications are you experiencing (if any)? My NEST can be anywhere from 10secs to 2 minutes. It’s never below a 10sec delay and it drives us crazy. Someone rings the doorbell and by the time we get the notification....they’re leaving!
    3. I have 2 door bells...are there instructions on how to wire multiple Logitech doorbells?
    Thanks for the awesome video. Would be great to see a video of the doorbell in action and all the ways it can be used in a HomeKit enabled home.

    Two questions,
    I’ve seen issues with direct sunlight and it overheating in weather at 74 degrees until the sun is off it. This is a normal temp and if it doesn’t work at that temp then what?
    Also, if I don’t have my front porch light on all night, this is going to get super annoying having an led shining outside at all times. That needs to be able and be toggled. Or at the very least scheduled.

    • @EricWelander
      @EricWelander  3 года назад

      Where I live during the winter this isn't an issue. In the summer it might but my front door has a little porch on it with a roof. I will probably have to defer to people in warmer climates with sunny front doors to test this. We probably won't see a 74 degree day for months lol!
      I wouldn't be too worried about this light source bleeding into the house. It's pretty small and doesn't project a long way. Still I agree it would be nice to have the option to turn it off.

    • @EricWelander
      @EricWelander  3 года назад +2

      Actually you can toggle it off with the Night Vision Light setting in the Home App. Much of the initial coverage said you couldn't toggle it off and I overlooked this option in settings. Sorry!! It's why this is a "first impressions" and not a "review".

    My original doorbell button is to the right of the door, which is also 90 degrees to the door. It’s about two feet to the right and about one foot “in front of” the door handle. It’s mounted on 5” redwood lap siding, so it’s angled up about 7 degrees. I’m trying to determine if this new Logitech doorbell would work for me with the 20 degree mount. The doorbell location would be very difficult to move to the door frame. What do you think?

    • @TheNameOfJesus
      @TheNameOfJesus 3 года назад

      My suggestion is to use the existing location and then construct some visible sign that says "DOORBELL --->" to help people find it. Even if the doorbell was in the right place, I know some old people who are such luddites that they would be too afraid to press a fancy computer button, not realizing it was a doorbell. So even if the doorbell is in the right place, I would still put a label on it that says "DOORBELL".

    With the recent Matter announcement, do you think Apply and Google will play nice and possibly have Nest integrated with Home Kit? I currently have Nest Hello installed but I would definitely love to move onto a HSV enabled doorbell camera like the Logitech Circle doorbell. I'm still holding out because I'm pretty deep with Nest ecosystem, have Starling hub, bunch of Nestcams. What do you think? If Nest Hello became Home Kit compatible, would you switch back?

      I do miss a number of features of Nest video like continuous recording. On the other hand I really like how fast the notifications are for the Logitech since it's all happening locally. I don't think we can count on what "play nice" between smart home ecosystems will look like yet with Matter. This will probably become more clear in 2022. It sounds like you have a nice setup with Nest and it might be best to stick with that for now.

    I'd be happy to see a video on Homekit Secure Video. Based on Logitech's site, it looks like we can get away with Apple's 200-gig iCloud plan ($3/month) if we have only one of these "Secure Video" devices. We'd need the 2-TB plan ($10/month) if we have 2 to 5 "Secure Video" devices.
    As others have asked, can we use these Circle View products without hooking them up to iCloud? I could see installing a few of these, but hooking up only one of them to iCloud.

    • @TheNameOfJesus
      @TheNameOfJesus 3 года назад +1

      I'm 90% sure that all HomeKit compatible cameras will work with the basic HomeKit features even without purchasing an online plan. You just won't be able to record video. You should still get things like motion detection, notifications and the ability to view the live camera feed, but there will be no record of the video. By the way, if you do have an online data plan with Apple, it can sometimes take up to 30 minutes before the Home App is first able to fetch the first recorded video. I was staring at my Home App for quite a while before the first recorded video showed up. Maybe Apple has solved that problem now.

    • @TheNameOfJesus
      @TheNameOfJesus 3 года назад +1

      If you could, it would have to be through the Home App. I haven't seen an option for this in the Home App. The general idea is that HomeKit Secure Video records MOTION, and seeing something like snow accumulation or leaves turning red isn't really motion in the normal sense of the word. It's a fair request, but I don't think Apple supports it now or will in the next year. You can already do this with your iPhone. Just position your iPhone in the window and use time lapse mode. Time lapse mode automatically detects how many frames per minute to save based on how long the camera is running in that mode.
