Being somewhat of a guitar player myself, I must say but one thing: everybody comparing Andy to other players, needs to wake up and realize how clean his playing actually is. No sloppiness, hands perfectly syncronized, long alternate pick runs, excellent note choice and modern approach to the guitar. He's one of the iconic players of this decade for sure. (I know, maybe Petrucci is even cleaner, Gilbert more creative and Batio faster, but you get my point).
SomethinWild bro, i love the three guys you mentioned and i listened to all of them many many years before i fell upon andy, but this guy is strait up a monster. His lick and pattern choices are stupid awesome haha.
I would put it this way, you can learn to be more creativy simple by listening to lots of different music and studying it, but to some people that "out of the box" thinking comes more natural, and they have a way of writing that reflects their personality, which can't be replicated by others
Note to the producers of this video: The time I spent seeing how your fancy cameras can move all around the room, the less time I spent seeing this guys hands. I'm sure some people would be more interested in the cameras moving about, but not me. Just sayin'.
bloodbrothers12345 ??? Last time I checked, this was RUclips. That is, a video site. That is, a website where you can post video of something people might find interesting. So now I'm sucking on his fingers? What the fuck's wrong with you?
responsibleparty wtf is wrong with you. this guy spend his whole life to play guitar and make some new songs and stuff like that. He is not your bitch!!! He make great vids here on RUclips if you want to learn a song PAY HIM!!! ..... like the character in the game Payday the heist says "everyone needs a payday"
This video. This, to me, is one of those performances that resonate so deeply in you that, no matter how many times you revisit it, it makes you smile because it exudes excellence and really inspires you to take the time to get your playing to a higher level.
bad ass run,but i can pick runs that are amazing from this guy from every solo he has ever done,he is top 3(maybe 2 or #1) in the world for complete and total domination of metal guitar.he kills at every riff, solo, rhythm, note he is fucking amazing, period check out the wicked run at 3:33
Saw this gifted guitar god in a Dublin dive with about 80 others, 3 years ago. Words escaped me to describe the experience, musicianship on another level!!!
Andy is amazing, not only he's a shredder but he has melody, something that we as guitar players are missing, Andy you inspire me to become not only in a better guitarist but in a better musician !!
instrumentals with perfect structures and a perfect balance of aggression and melody! bought this album last year and its still amazing every time i listen to it! cheers to one of the best teachers and performers out there!
Alex Wright I get that the bridge helps you sound cleaner (for some reason) but I just almost always saw him using the neck pu. I did see him do Black Star and that was some bridge pu in there. He's a good guitarist.
Is this is peak of guitar playing ability? It seems like this is the max level one can really get at, without inventing a whole new style of playing where no man or woman can fit in
I'm quite sure guitar has no Bounds. If it takes inventing a style that only you can play then do it. If not for that you wouldnt even see a solo like that cause no one in their right minds 100 years ago would say " Hey lets try this " And start shredding like a bitch . Feel me?
One thing about him that always really amazed me was how completely unique his phrasing is and plus the harmonies you get something completely and unheard of before and its incredible. And not only is it crazy that he was able to write and record this in the studio... he plays completely in time live with his backing tracks. Can you imagine playing harmonies that accurately at that speed that weave in and out of a sing like this?!
It's absolutely mesmerizing to watch his hands and fingers at war, slaughtering and mass murdering, while the rest of his body is absolutely at peace and totaly calm.
Lol, I guess it goes by what type of music you listen to and how often you practice. I can play this song and I've only been playing guitar for like 2 years. I practice literally everyday for 8 hours.
That's a stretch man lil Wayne's the greatest guitarist this world had ever saw. You saw how he was playing that guitar without an amp on top of the limo. Hes got skillz. Lil Wayne and his guitar for president 2016.
EMG's needs to have the 9V changed about every 2000 hours. Some change it more often. 2 best ways to tell in my experience are to either A) Use a battery tester about every 6 months or so (depending if you gig or just practice), or B) Listen to your sound. They will start to lose tone and gain with a dying battery. I usually replace all mine once a year when I do my setup in the spring after the weather gets warm again.
I've seen this song playthrough at least four times. I did buy your album. Another thing when listening to this song The rhythm section you wrote is good and chunky in the right places.
Dime will always be my favorite player, but this is STILL my favorite single performance by anyone. Breathtaking and mindblowing are a gross understatement.
I understand that there are 7,962 lovers of this. But really haters? really? If you don't like it hen don't come here just to fucking show it. Keep your negativity to your selves!
people happen to stumble upon videos too its not like everyone that doesn't like an artist is a troll dude, not saying that i don't like this guy though
Alex Shcherbakov It's not there type but there's no reason to dislike on this page, just change the video but he's a God playing guitar, doesn't matter if you like or not, it's simply amazing how he plays
Carlos Moreno Why isn't there a reason to dislike? You have both a like and dislike button, there's just as much reason to like as to dislike a video. Having said that, ofcourse I liked the video.
Technically Andy James is a monster. There is just no comparison.Kirk is just a good guitarist that had the luck to be in one of the greatest bands of all time.
Totally. I'm not 'in love' with everything Andy's done but this performance in particular just spoke to me in a way that very few have. Granted, the players you mentioned are BRILLIANT in their own right, but this one just floors me. Every time I watch it, I get something new. Thankfully, it's not essential to be as good as these guys to make music or I'd have to quit. Personally, I dig everyone from Dime to Holdsworth, Roy Clark, Page, Morello, Cazares, Govan, Loomis, Friedman, Abasi, Vai...
I have 22 now :'( hahaha, I play songs like fermented offal discharge (necrophagist), I knew the solo but it was stressful because I practiced and practiced it but I could never can play it fluidly :/ so, there is my guitar, lying on the music stand xd when I was child, I always dreamed to be a great guitarrist, but no... I can't, I cant proceed...
+Andres Contreras i started when i was 15, too... i am only 17 now tho :D the hardest solo i can play is from "follow the reaper", but i always have to be totally warmed up to play fast :/ i guess we just have to keep practicing ;) keep it up man, you don't play bad, i saw your video
Thanks man, your words give me so hope hahaha, well, you're right, practice makes a master, and we must be so patient in this path :/ good luck for you, you are younger than me hahaha you have more time!
Andres Contreras Play all day long, as long as it takes.. and try to learn as much as you can. In order to become great in something, you have to be totally obsessed with it ;)
Kameron WilliamsI do not to like to sound like an asshole, this guy has an ability that is beyond incredible. I was just putting my point of view that It is impossible for me to listen more than 2 songs of the guy. He has an incredible technic, despite his little finger being short and kind of crooked.
Tyler J Well, I am a classical musician so I do know what I'm talking about. This guy is horible as far as music is concerned. And my oppinion is my oppinion and it is not opoen to dicussion. There are many other guitar freaks that are better than him, becuase they have the technic and the ability to do music.
Well you're a classic musicians so keep to classic music then. This style is way different. That's like Jimmy Hendrix talking about Andy it's two whole different things.
Alot of people know how to play angels of darkness and they can crack the surface. This is a professional at work. And sounds perfect. Very good. It calls people to play.
I've probably watched this upwards of 50 times in the past week haha. Andy, you are a god!
Love your work mr.Rolland
Tu também é mestre!
SomethinWild somebody who gets it. I salute you sir.
whats the comparison anyways😑, he's so damn good.
SomethinWild bro, i love the three guys you mentioned and i listened to all of them many many years before i fell upon andy, but this guy is strait up a monster. His lick and pattern choices are stupid awesome haha.
A jack of all trades 💪
A jack of all trades 💪
Doesn't matter how unimpressed one may be. To do what he does takes years of dedication
jcruz04 beside years. You need to born with the rarest gift creativity to make amazing melodies and sounds
creativity is also something that can be learned
Giiggle Agree but im talking about native creativity not the one you learn or stealth
I would put it this way, you can learn to be more creativy simple by listening to lots of different music and studying it, but to some people that "out of the box" thinking comes more natural, and they have a way of writing that reflects their personality, which can't be replicated by others
Giiggle That's my point with a more literary vocabulary
Watching this on December 29 2023! The Best around Andy is!
Note to the producers of this video: The time I spent seeing how your fancy cameras can move all around the room, the less time I spent seeing this guys hands. I'm sure some people would be more interested in the cameras moving about, but not me. Just sayin'.
go to his website and buy the song I think the tabs are there too. Then you don't have to look on his hands.
bloodbrothers12345 He's a good player. I want to look at his hands.
responsibleparty
Yes he's a good player. And thats why he want your money. Not your eyes sucking on his fingers^^
bloodbrothers12345 ??? Last time I checked, this was RUclips. That is, a video site. That is, a website where you can post video of something people might find interesting. So now I'm sucking on his fingers? What the fuck's wrong with you?
responsibleparty
wtf is wrong with you. this guy spend his whole life to play guitar and make some new songs and stuff like that. He is not your bitch!!! He make great vids here on RUclips if you want to learn a song PAY HIM!!! ..... like the character in the game Payday the heist says "everyone needs a payday"
i still rewatch this all the time
10/10
Just thank you Andy for being there
So great musician and melodic
His tone is nice. I usually don't hear a tone that's quite that clean on a lot of shred players.
I agree:]]
I know SMT is disbanded, but hope to see Andy perform Hourglass live on emgtv or his channel. That would be awesome.
This video. This, to me, is one of those performances that resonate so deeply in you that, no matter how many times you revisit it, it makes you smile because it exudes excellence and really inspires you to take the time to get your playing to a higher level.
Am I the only one that is most impressed by the run at 1:25?
No.
bad ass run,but i can pick runs that are amazing from this guy from every solo he has ever done,he is top 3(maybe 2 or #1) in the world for complete and total domination of metal guitar.he kills at every riff, solo, rhythm, note he is fucking amazing, period check out the wicked run at 3:33
wayne smith he and who else?
Obviously Petrucci has to be there... right?
carlos sammet
yes,he is a god among progressive metal guitarists
Nice, who else would you say belongs to that privilege position along with Petrucci and Andy James?
Saw this gifted guitar god in a Dublin dive with about 80 others, 3 years ago. Words escaped me to describe the experience, musicianship on another level!!!
Andy is amazing, not only he's a shredder but he has melody, something that we as guitar players are missing, Andy you inspire me to become not only in a better guitarist but in a better musician !!
For me, it's the best Andy James song ever!!! So much soul in this song!!
My ears found a soul mate!
This song saved my life.
Thank you.
******* Awesome song , congrat ! Who dislike this video is a mad person or don't have any idee for what is the guitar instrument ....
instrumentals with perfect structures and a perfect balance of aggression and melody!
bought this album last year and its still amazing every time i listen to it!
cheers to one of the best teachers and performers out there!
Ragnar has some skills. Cool!
jjajajajjajajaja maybe ivar too......
there aren´t any because his playing has more balls than a gay porn
no matter how many times i hear this ,,, im still in love with this piece
Nunca me canso desse vídeo! Maravilhosa composição. ..
Andy James, The Future of Metal!
This video should have at least ten times more views.
THis guy quickly made it to my list of favorite guitar players, holy fuck.
How old is he. I am asking because his skills of guitar playing are amazing. One of my favorite guitarist and probably the best of them.
he is 34 years old
You're not asking. A question ends with a question mark, not a period.
As far as I can tell, this is perfect in every sense of the word.
US-Jeff Loomis.
UK-Andy James
Been such a long time but still slaps af
Does he ever play with the bridge pickup?
+TruthSurge Yes, just not often.
Alex Wright I get that the bridge helps you sound cleaner (for some reason) but I just almost always saw him using the neck pu. I did see him do Black Star and that was some bridge pu in there. He's a good guitarist.
+TruthSurge at 2:26 you can see him switch to the bridge. Not sure if he does this any other times
ezekeil33 just seemed he used the neck pu 95% of the time. Maybe not for the rhythms as much but for solos, melodies.
+TruthSurge Yea, I suppose he just likes the rounder sound of the neck for that kinda stuff. Who knows, ill ask him next time i see him xD
its guys like you andy who inspire me to practice everyday
Hands down my favorite shredder next to govan and loomis. His style is more distinct my vibrato and alt. Picking is much better thanks to this guy.
Not sure Id say Andy's style is more distinct than Loomis's, but both are in my top 3 modern players list.
andy james is influenced by John petrucci , I can see a younger petrucci playing guitar on this video
time 2:55 run are nice sounding nice picking and very nice scale
Andy James's pinky is his second appendix!
Andy James is fast becoming one of my favorite guitarists
Is this is peak of guitar playing ability? It seems like this is the max level one can really get at, without inventing a whole new style of playing where no man or woman can fit in
for the realm of shredding that is. there's still jazz, classical and other forms.
i find dark matter by rusty cooley to be much more challenging to play than this song.
I'm quite sure guitar has no Bounds. If it takes inventing a style that only you can play then do it. If not for that you wouldnt even see a solo like that cause no one in their right minds 100 years ago would say " Hey lets try this " And start shredding like a bitch . Feel me?
Cole Ohanian Yup, the ultimate guitarist would be able to play everything thats possible.
caponi14 2 words: John Petrucci
One thing about him that always really amazed me was how completely unique his phrasing is and plus the harmonies you get something completely and unheard of before and its incredible. And not only is it crazy that he was able to write and record this in the studio... he plays completely in time live with his backing tracks. Can you imagine playing harmonies that accurately at that speed that weave in and out of a sing like this?!
1:03 perfect shit ever
That fast lick at about 3:32 sends shivers up my spine, I would pay good money to see andy play live!!!
correction 3:33
ruclips.net/video/WGPqH9Jednk/видео.html
@EMGPickups : Can we get This kind of sound using the 81-85 pair?
Cleanest guitar shredder, Discovered this guy by the end of 2015 and learnt a lot from him
"Anyways, here's wonderwall"
one of my all time favourite pieces by andy, been a fan of his work since a kid
that bend at 2:23 O_O
It's just another bend
Connor Deal You're just another bend!
I do bend a lot seeing ad I play everyday but it's nothing special
You mean that normal 1 step bend? :)
Even though I will most likely never reach his ability, he inspires me everytime I watch him.
It's absolutely mesmerizing to watch his hands and fingers at war, slaughtering and mass murdering, while the rest of his body is absolutely at peace and totaly calm.
Superb!salutes!from KK Sabah,Malaysia🇲🇾🤘🏼👊🇲🇾🤘🏼

Lol, I guess it goes by what type of music you listen to and how often you practice. I can play this song and I've only been playing guitar for like 2 years. I practice literally everyday for 8 hours.

Haha when people ask me that question after showing them my guitar hahah (face palm)
the anthem for guitarist.
Fyre Hawk nope lol
Gold star for being the 5000th commenter to submit that 'funny' zinger.
Andy James's music always makes me feel and think without even putting words to it. He is truly magnificent.
But can he play like Lil Wayne?
Loled so hard.
Thank god he can't! Lol!
That's a stretch man lil Wayne's the greatest guitarist this world had ever saw. You saw how he was playing that guitar without an amp on top of the limo. Hes got skillz. Lil Wayne and his guitar for president 2016.
IrokoSalei I guess he can't, too much for him. Lil Wayne is the greatest guitarist in the world :D
kira san LIl Wayne? seriously? do you use a ferrari to go to the supermarket or take your grandma to the doctor?? I would be a waste!!!
same here!
so much feelings in this song ... great job Andy
This guy is the FUCKING BOSS!!
I think Andy just melted my face off with that preformance
so can somebody tell me how often does he needs to change his bateries ?
EMG's needs to have the 9V changed about every 2000 hours. Some change it more often. 2 best ways to tell in my experience are to either A) Use a battery tester about every 6 months or so (depending if you gig or just practice), or B) Listen to your sound. They will start to lose tone and gain with a dying battery. I usually replace all mine once a year when I do my setup in the spring after the weather gets warm again.
i can't understand how you master all those technicks , truly great & awesome m8.
fan here .
Pretty good! Keep practicing!!!
I've seen this song playthrough at least four times. I did buy your album. Another thing when listening to this song The rhythm section you wrote is good and chunky in the right places.
Entire Universe - Andy James
Dime will always be my favorite player, but this is STILL my favorite single performance by anyone. Breathtaking and mindblowing are a gross understatement.
Well I'll start picking up the remnants of my face now....
the main melody from this song is so good. the chorus part is extraordinary

Carlos Moreno Exactly.
these haters are the ones who are skinhead and started to play guitar :)
Carlos Moreno Why isn't there a reason to dislike? You have both a like and dislike button, there's just as much reason to like as to dislike a video. Having said that, ofcourse I liked the video.
One of my Favorite Guitarist here for sure!
Technically Andy James is a monster. There is just no comparison.Kirk is just a good guitarist that had the luck to be in one of the greatest bands of all time.
Metallica is my favorite band of all time, and you sir are absolutely correct
Hahahahahahahahaha
What amazing technique you can hear every single note perfectly. I don't even know what to say expect that it was awesome.
Damm king Ragnar can shred !
Totally. I'm not 'in love' with everything Andy's done but this performance in particular just spoke to me in a way that very few have. did he electrocute his fingers before playing? cause they never stopped moving!
Thank you for EMGTV That you share this video
How can I be great like you :( fuck I play guitar since I was 15 years old and I still being a fucking scumbag on guitar :(
how old are you now?
I have 22 now :'( hahaha, I play songs like fermented offal discharge (necrophagist), I knew the solo but it was stressful because I practiced and practiced it but I could never can play it fluidly :/ so, there is my guitar, lying on the music stand xd when I was child, I always dreamed to be a great guitarrist, but no... I wanted to post a comment about awesomeness and then I forgot it. In any case it brings back memories when I used to listen to Andy's music.
Andy sounds quite similar to Petrucci, great player
I saw him on Fringe. There is this device on the back of his head, what makes him a machine.
Awesome song. Lots of speed but not too much to where it gets annoying.
Andy knows how to teach, learning from him is very easy from me. Everything!
Thats Incredible! awell as the fact he is only using 4 fingers lol
+Evolutionz lmao damn
after all these years still here. fucking epic.
Yeah, he's okay I guess. But I can play sunshine of your love, so someone get this scrubmuffin out of my recommendations
The metal band Origin has songs, in which the riffs are mainly arpeggios, mainly on their album Echoes of Decimation.
Now I know God is bald!!!
that's it? this was enough for you? smh
Very good James.
Every song of this guy sounds exactly the same. He has no musical dinamic. Is like a computer trying to sound human.
You not enjoying his music, and his talent are two completely different things. I enjoyed your uploads though.
Kameron WilliamsI do not to like to sound like an asshole, this guy has an ability that is beyond incredible. I was just putting my point of view that It is impossible for me to listen more than 2 songs of the guy. He has an incredible technic, despite his little finger being short and kind of crooked.
No he doesn't. You know nothing. Seperation sounds completely different and so do a ton of other of his songs
Simply outta this world!
This melodie 01:02 - 01:15 ....sounds so sad...its so awesome and beautiful
The best Thing about Andy's music that, no one else play it except for Andy. Cuz they can't :D
Comment of the video: " Now, Andy James has undeniably earned himself a place among the very best in the world."
...AGREEEEEEEEED MA FRIEND!
eargasm. what a wonderful playing
tabs would be a great service friend. truly one of the best performances i've ever seen
Love you been a fan for long time
Alot of people know how to play angels of darkness and they can crack the surface. This is a professional at work. And sounds perfect. Very good. It calls people to play.
That's what works for him. It's actualy preety amazing how he gets his touch to any song he covers, I mean look at the man play x)
I really like his thumb technique while playing alternate or sweep picking. Makes it really smooth.
Andy James one killer guitar player 👍🎸🤘
Shred Beast! Can't wait to hear his part of Bloodshot Dawn's new album!
talented, smooth arpeggios, and great guitar player and shredder, I like it man sounds good.
