Musician here - Most of my colleagues, myself included, own a 12.9 iPad pro for reading music, instead of paper sheet music. We exclusively use iPads instead of other tablets because the software we use, called ForeScore, is apple exclusive, and the 12.9" because it has to be big enough to read off of a music stand. I would love more than anything to have a large non-pro iPad, it's completely insane that the majority of the music industry owns these incredibly powerful machines just to read PDFs on a big screen. Also, Marques, we went to high school together, go cougars.
Another muso here. My current 12.9 iPad almost died on me the other day and left me contemplating a new iPad. I was absolutely gutted to find out that Apple would try to box me into getting their most expensive tablet option just because of screen size. Ridiculous. I don’t need an M2 chip to read pdf’s of sheet music.

I think the small improvements are just for those that just happen to buy a new tablet this year and are not meant to encourage you to upgrade from the previous ipad. Even for iphones I think only a small percentage upgrate every year when the new Gen comes out but for tablet users this number is probably still a alot smaller.
Why wouldn’t that person just buy a $300 less ipad
@@KingTalha funny how the M2 is on the same price in my country
@@KingTalha Because it doesn't have 120hz

The real question is why not buy an M1 iPad Pro for a huge discount and then sell that when the M3 iPad Pro gets released.
Imagine the Marques wearing Boston Dynamics T-shirt is not an edited clone but is actually a robot that he got made from Boston Dynamics themselves.
It's cheaper for them to just pay him to wear the t-shirt.
Do we know for sure that it isn't a robot from Boston Dynamics? Huh? Do we? 🤔🤔
That explains the stutter
Does that mean in all the other scenes the Marques is actually the robot, and the real one only shows up when filming the "talk to self" part?

As a healthcare consultant that (before covid) traveled every week for work, I migrated to the iPad Pro and used it as a laptop replacement for years. I didn't create documents or artifacts from scratch. My role at this point was managing teams and reviewing, editing, and improving documents and artifacts my teams created. I could do everything I needed with an instant on, always connected tablet that was 1/4 the weight and size of my laptop. Plus it was far less intimidating to sit with a client or customer and take notes with a pen on my screen than to sit there and click clack away on a laptop keyboard. All that said. I still use the a 2nd generation iPad Pro. It does everything I need.

As someone who just bought their first ever iPad, I wanted the most features and the best device I could get. I won't get another chance to get a device like this for a long time, so yeah the M2 makes the most sense for me. Obviously it's not a meaningful upgrade for someone that bought an iPad in the last couple years, but it's a great starting point for new owners.
The refurbished M1 iPad Pro at the moment just make so much more sense. Even in the UK where we often get shafted, we are talking a £440 saving on the 256GB model, M1 refurbished vs M2. It's a crazy amount of price increase for such little gains in spec and features.
true, but the hover feature will be amazing for artists, the later release date means that these iPads will get software support for a longer period and time and they will also last you longer due to the stronger chip. if you want to keep this iPad for 6+ years, its def worth it. if you plan to upgrade in 2-4 years the m1 iPad Pro might be a better purchase.
I find it so crazy that iPad never had hovering and nobody until now mentioned it comparing it with the competition... that's a critical feature to have for digital drawing
It's not a critical to have feature for digital drawing. It's a nicety.
Lol critical. Obviously, nothing was produced on the iPad Pro with the pencil prior to this feature.
I got by for years without it, but now that it’s actually on iPad, I’m glad they joined the party cuz I really enjoy using Procreate. Especially now I don’t have room for my big wacom tablet in my current room. Plus more power means more layers I can add the tiniest things on and then lose in the unnamed layers
It's only critical for tablets that don't have a screen.
I have it on my Wacom and when I started drawing on my M1 iPad I didn’t even realise it was missing. It may be critical for some, but definitely not all.

Truly The Top Thing To Think about.
Jesus Christ is the propitiation for the whole world's sins. They that believeth and are baptized (with the Holy Spirit) shall be saved; but they that believeth not shall be damned. Those led by the Holy Spirit do not abide in wickedness. 👍🏾
*God is ONE manifesting himself as THREE;* the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit! Bless him! *For these three are one.*
As I am led by the Holy Spirit, nothing I state is a lie, but the truth of God. Anyone who tells you differently is misinformed or a liar. They do not know God, nor led by him.
Anyone who *claims* to be a Christian and is against what I am doing, and where I am doing it; the Holy Spirit does not dwell within them, they lack understanding. They know not God, read his word, and their religion is in vain. Do not hear them, they will mislead you, the lost cannot guide the lost.
When you trust in God and cast your cares (worries, anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts) upon him, they will be NO MORE!
Know that there is power in the name Jesus Christ! His name casts out demons and heals!
The world is wicked, evil, and of the devil.
I too, was a wicked sinner of the world before I opened my heart to God. I am living proof of God's work and fruitfulness! He is an active God who hears the prayers of his! God's children are set apart (holy) and righteous. The devil is a liar that comes to steal, to kill, and to destroy; that includes your relationship with God.
Open your heart to God, repent of your sins (he will forgive you), and let him direct your path. Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands and purify your heart, lest you walk with the devil and follow him to hell.
I use my M1 iPad Pro for DJ gigs and it’s THE BEST. Simple easy to take a move around, small footprint, large BRIGHT screen, and I can use my hands to interact with the software. Plus my turntable connect DIRECTLY to the usb c port. Super convenient, and powerful. That’s what the pro means too me.

To be fair they're on different level. I mean by number, not class.
When I learned that the brush cursor (that dot that shows the size of the brush when you hold the pencil over the screen) is literally the newest feature on the latest iPad pro I couldn't believe it, because I had it since forever on my very old Samsung tablet that I mostly been using for drawing and was looking to replace it. It literally sounded like wow look at this awesome beast of a device with the newest M2 chip - it shows where your brush is going to land and how the colors are blending. Still makes me giggle, despite the fact I actually bought the thing in the end. Whaaat? It's future proof and all..

I had the normal ipad 2020 and as an artist I work with a lot of layers, up to 200 sometimes. But at like 70 layers I had to stop and switch to the PC because it wasn't powerful enough. This is why I wanted to upgrade to an ipad pro. And didn't want to risk it with the M1 one, because My drawings keep getting more complicated the better I get, so I waited for the M2 one and till now I haven't had any problems. I was able to finish my drawings on my new ipad and the big screen was also a great improvement compared to before:)
Like Picasso said: "if you can't paint with one layer what are you doing step bruh"
That's silly. There's nothing the M2 can do the M1 can't. It's just slightly faster
one of the rare few instances where the ipad pro is being used to its potential lmao.
Lot of layers have become useless by 200 of em.
Thank you for sharing. This guy is who the iPad Pro is made for. It’s not that complicated it for graphic artist like what the confusion?
The update from the A-processor to the M1 was a *massive* upgrade on the iPad Pro, an upgrade worth doing. My M1 iPad Pro benchmarks higher and has noticeably better 3D graphics than my 11th Gen Intel i7 laptop (without a discrete gpu) that was bought around the same time (and cost more). Most people could legitimately replace their laptop with an iPad Pro, especially if they would narrow the gap between MacOS and iPadOS. I use my iPad more than my laptop for basic tasks. The only thing it is missing is the app support, which keeps it feeling more like a tablet and less like a computer, even though the performance and specs of the iPad are way more like a computer than a tablet.
The M2 update feels like a typical Apple update. Most the stuff is the same, but new processor and a couple gimmicky features. Not really enough to justify an update for a reasonable person, but there are so many Apple fanatics out there who simply must have the newest thing, so they’ll sell a ton.
The Ipad pros can most certainly replace a laptop for many people. From both a, hardware and software point of view. It's just a matter of knowing what your workflow is like and what you want to be done. Platforms are chosen often times based on the apps that someone wants to run.

I am still using the 1st 12.9" ipad pro and that was not long ago dec 2015. This new pen feature is really good idea, preview the shape or location before touching is great idea!
The trouble is that if you're an artist, you know that having a pen preview is a really basic feature, so it's just frustrating that it's only on the M2 iPads. The Galaxy Notes have been doing this for ever, its a feature that really shouldn't be excluded because you can have this feature on any device that supports an active stylus.
@@alexwr i think they had that feature working internally for long time but was not to Apple standard. Not ready for prime time. Something Hardware or software made it possible. Could of been at bottom of priority too. I notice the effect preview with the hover of the pen. That is an example of a great use of that feature which are details like this that apple likes.
The last iPad I bought was the original iPad Pro 9.7 and it still blazes through anything I use it for (mostly Netflix and reading and the occasional game). So given the long cycle of usage I am able to get out of it, I bought the new iPad Pro 11 2022 edition with the M2. I wanted the M1, but the price difference was $50. So I hope to get another 7 years of usage from that. After a long line of cheap Android tablets, this is the one apple product I don't mind spending cash on.

@@calvintrinh4869 🤣
if you are not an artist using Ipad to make money, then you fall in only one category: ultra rich
It's all about performance for me. If I'm not getting 30% performance increase or better, it's ain't worth the upgrade. Extra features are a bonus, but performance comes first 1st 🥇
The only use case I've found for the M1 Pro (and the M2 by extension) is having extra memory available when running debug builds of our iOS games - the 4-6gb you get on the iPhones often isn't quite enough, especially when you consider that the OS is going to start sending you angrily-worded messages and then kill you when you use about half of that.
I don't even know if Apple will ever read my opinion, but I'll say it anyway... I hope they add the top-bottom version of the multi-app screen. I mean, sure in landscape mode the side by side multiscreen will work well, but they should also realize the the top-bottom option for portrait will also bring more possibilities as to how the iPad can be utilized. Especially for the 12.9 inch. I personally would want to experience the top-bottom multiscreen when I can only lay the iPad on a smaller desk.
It's really stupid they don't do this.
Samsung does
I was trying to figure out if that's actually an option last night while using the iPad, but was disappointed they only have screen multitasking side by side
Apple's multitasking on ios is very poor because they dont want the ipad to compete with the macbook, they want to force you to buy both.
If this is something you care about, as always there are some nice options outside of the apple ecosystem. High end samsung tablet can actually replace your laptop, comes with a free pen, and I'd argue has a nicer screen
YES
The two things I wished it had are the Surface-style keyboard and the horizontal-oriented camera they just gave to the base-model iPad.
The hover feature is something I'm a little surprised it didn't already have, it's good they added it.
That would kind of get in the way of the Apple pencil charging spot.

Having that extra power, better displays, and storage absolutely are worth it for me.
May I know which size of iPad pro did you use?
I’m a student at Uni and I just bought it! Best purchase I’ve ever made, I really love it! I think it all comes down to how you’re gonna use it… I personnally replaced my 15’ MacBook Pro I was using. So far, so good!
What is your workflow? Wouldn't a regular chromebook be able to replace your macbook as well?
Dudeee. You totally brighten my day. I love listening to you talk tech, even if I’m not even into the tech you’re talking about 😂 you are my RUclips guru. I’m 50 years old ! ❤ respect 💯
I have the original iPad Pro and it got me through highschool and is still very convenient for note taking and some design stuff in college
Wow these Marques’ dialogs are getting so smooth I even forget it’s a montage. Excellent video! BTW I’m an artist and this Apple Pencil hover is A WHOLE DEAL in our world. It almost made me switch from my M1 iPad Pro. I’m just not gonna get one because I’m protesting it not having changed the camera to the middle side and basically not changing anything else
4:00 Hang on a second. Is that what Samsung Galaxy S4 users were enjoying back in 2013? It was called Air View -- when you hovered your finger over the email or notification to see the preview. I'm missing it so much now. But, hey! Since Apple has just reinvented it again, there is a chance to get it back on Galaxy too!
For me,, buying current M2 Pro came from upgrading out of my older first gen 2016 Pro. While it still works and runs Procreate fine enough, it had started to chug just a bit while running Clip Studio; not to mention running either of those apps had by now started to tank the battery so I couldn't get a longer drawing session than about 2 hours before it needed to get plugged in. Thus as a very rare splurge, I finally decided to just pull the trigger and upgrade while figuring that if I am going to do it now, i'll go all in. Whatever big jumps will happen right after, well, they'll happen - so be it.
The hover is not there? Samsung Note 3 from like ... 2013 does that What the hell!
5:22 I was fooled thinking the video was gonna end with that music
Always with the perfect intros!
Thank You ! I have been shopping iPad Pro's for art applications. You answered the exact question I was curious about along with your wit about why. Highest Regards
Nice to see Marques collaborating with small creators like MKBHD.
I love the MKBHD vs MKBHD, the duo I never thought I would need!
Personally I use my M1 for administration and Some media consumption. So much power for something an a12 would do flawlessly.. its the appeal of having too much power and not needing it right now but hoping and secretly expecting for more pro usage
A guy I used to know had a Lamborghini that he loved, but it wouldn't clear the bumps to the closest grocery store. He did have a Jaguar as well, but his wife kept taking it so he got a BMW M5 for the times he wanted to go get some milk or bread.
Can't have too much power. :P
I use my iPad for business on Shapr3D, Nomad Sculpt, Luma Fusion and Affinity suite as well as a secondary display for my MacBook. I wouldn’t be where I am today without my iPad m1 for one reason or another. I’d say it has a ton of utility for pro users who need mobility and can leverage the iPad apps to their fullest.
I guess it depends on ones profession. Artist, Architect, 3D Artist, Product Designer, Editorial Photographer, Authors etc would have great use for this. Anyone outside of that would have be fine with the basics.
Yeah If I can avoid going to desktop and design in the iPad I prefer the iPad.
No other device has the vast array of input and connectivity than the iPad Pro.
Touch, Pencil, Keyboard, Voice Control, Camera, 5G, Bluetooth.
If life is a speedrun, my iPad makes it a tool assisted speedrun.
An additional mini is very helpful. Insane mobility.
I go for 2h walks watching lectures one-handed without discomfort.
The data is synced via Cloud, so I can work on the mini during the train commute and resume at a table on the pro.
I use Shapr3D and LumaFusion on my M1 for my business as well. I particularly love Shapr3D. You’re the second person I’ve seen mention Nomad, I wonder if I should check it out. But yeah the touch and Pencil input is great, I love designing on the iPad and being able to do it anywhere from a couch to a park. Amazing tool.
@@antman7673 , my 2017 iPad Pro (A10X) was a serious workhorse but when the loop of death happned and Apple didnt take responsibility for it considering its was a design flaw, I started looking for alternatives because that was $1200 down the drain with only 5 months use. Recently, I gave the iPad Pro M1, Surface Pro and Samsung S8 a reasonable amount of time testing with various apps. At first the first drawback from me not getting a Windows or Android tablet was the lack of Procreate and its new 3D painting feature but then I heard about Nomad Sculpt and the S8 got my pick. The S8 is just simply more comfortable and the pen feels more like an actual ink pen than the clunky iPad Pencil. Plus, the pen COMES WITH the S8 so its a complete package, unlike the iPad "Pro". My friend who is a tattoos artist also stated the S-Pen was a clear winner for her when she tried my older Samsung S6 that i got a quick fix while shopping for a more pro-level alternative. She mentioned that when she purchased her 2018 iPad Pro for drawing that she was blown away that the iPad Pro wasn't really "Pro" until she purchased the Apple Pencil, at least in her scenario and likely many others who are artist.
Here is one noticeable difference, Marques. I use LumaFusion a lot for content creation. On my iPad Pro (4th gen) I couldn’t go higher than 50mbps bit rate. So, I had to convert videos from my Fuji XT-4 in order to scrub them on the timeline. Now, I can use 200mbps 4K 60fps and they play smoothly evem with some effects on. I would love to hear if M1 could do that because 4th gen 2020 couldn’t.
Paradoxically you like most of RUclips tech reviewers only see the iPad as any other device from the perspective of video/image editing because that’s mostly what you do. People use 12,9 iPad in other industries mostly because it’s got the biggest screen and is the most reliable tablet. Since I work with classical music a lot of professional pianists use it, because it’s the only thing big enough for scores. My crew for example runs opera shows from iPads. A big iPad is the most useful device a person dealing with sheet music can buy. You seem to think that pro = best for video editing when it’s probably just a niche use for most iPad Pro users.
I’m still loving the current forms of the phones and iPads, hope they don’t change them.
This video was top-notch, the expressions, choice of words, acting, everything phenomenal
I’m actually about to start taking advantage of that “pro” power on the iPad. I have a section of my business where I take care of the logistics for other pop up shops and pop up vending businesses. Essentially what I’m working on is where I 3d scan all of the physical products like sunglasses, hats, back packs, soaps, oils, etc. that give me the perfect dimensions then I preplan everything in 3d, how much inventory, the different skus etc. Working with blender and fusion 360 currently but some of these files I want to use can be upwards of 750MB-1.5gb and that’s huge for loading up. Still have some work to do but I want all these 3d renders to be accessible mobile and the iPad is the best way. Still have a lot of work on this project but I can’t stop geeking out over the power that’s coming out that can run all these 3d assetts I’m developing so smoothly.
Love the videos where your twin brother comes to debate you man. You should get him on the channel more often
Very helpful video, Straight to the point. THANK YOU!
I think this is in line with the dynamic island approach. Slowly making things better without feeling the need to make it all at once in a bundle.
So entertaining to watch two marques go at it! Super useful insight too, exactly what I considered when watching the new event.
I think the ipad pro is the perfect back up product for true professionals but also a great product for starting independent creators. I do most of my professional work on it. I personally don’t like laptops anymore and im from the 90ties 😅 with the pencil and a pair of good wired headphones there is no excuse to not be creative/productive if you have a couple of minutes to spare. The machine has zero limitations great videos photos and audio productions grafic design, architecture etc all in the palm of your hand! Thats magic
Agree, what kind of work do u primarily use it for?
To me the ipad pro is hardcore pro. I use it for work all the time, i actually love it for working.
Whats your work?
1:02 I actually really like that it says “iPad Pro” on this model and “iPad Air” on the Air and etc. It’s a very small change but I think it’s a nice cosmetic touch
I’m rocking a 2018 iPad Pro 11” with the A12X CPU and it still feels blazing fast even though it’s quickly approaching the half-decade mark. Minus battery degradation (it’s like 6 hours now), it still renders 4K video editing in LumaFusion from both GoPro and my iPhone via AirDrop really well. I truly believe Apple’s tablets are about as future-proof as you can get in this industry!
So I currently have a 2018 11” iPad Pro and one of the only reasons I want to upgrade is to get the 12.9” iPad with a mini led display. Though I know it’s not really, I personally feel like the 11” is too small for note taking so I want that extra real-estate for if/when I go back to college to finish my degree. I also want that better display because I use my iPad for a lot of media consumption (particularly at night time) and while I know there’s some blooming issues with the mini led that’s better than having a fully backlit screen. I was very excited about the m2 iPad Pro but I think I’d rather wait or just get a m1 12.9” iPad Pro.
you're the only youtuber I've watched who uploads videos with honest opinions and straight up 100% true facts.
Impressive alliteration at the end there. It was ingenious in its implementation. Instantly incredible and important information. 👍
The intro was 🔥
I use my iPad Pro form illustrating (I license my work) and it’s also handy as a second monitor to my MacBook Pro for when I travel for work.
Thanks for being you. Been watching since you started ❤
7:44 Ipad with the Damascus skin from COD?
I have been an iPad Pro user since 2018. It started with a simple use case of being the entertainment device for home. Then I learned I can design on it, so all my UI designs were done on it. Then sidecar came and it also became the second screen to separate work tasks from workplace collaboration. Then I started taking all my meetings from it. And it also became the go to notepad. Then I got myself gitpod and now I could also code on it. If you are a software professional, the iPad Pro can replace a lot of other things for you if you really give it a fair shot.
What are you using for ui designs? I do everything in Figma right now and would love a more mobile alternative
@@Samuelhgflax Depending on your preference and task at hand, you can choose between Figma, Sketch, Concepts, Miro.
Well done! Entertaining and educational, love your videos, keep em coming! I just bought the ipad Pro 12.9, kind of wish I'd waited for the new one that's coming out soon but I was too impatient. Enjoyed the video, take care!
I just bought mine on Friday (Upgrading from the second gen iPad Pro from 2020) !
Love the last couple of word plays at the end
This device could be a computer replacement for UX Designers since Figma is available on iPad and this improvement can be valuable to be able to open multiple projects/work on heavier files
Figjam is the only figma product officially supported for iPad (alongside viewing prototypes). For actual design files you need to use a third party iPad app which doesn’t handle large files as well. Also for designing at a normal productivity level you need to use keyboard shortcuts heavily.
the feature same as the desktop one?
Surface Pro is my computer replacement. Oh wait, it IS a fully fledged computer with all the pro apps under the sun, in a slick tablet form factor. Apple really needs to step up their game, it's a fun toy but sad as a pro device.
I have to say Marques - this intro right here was one of the best, if not THE BEST intro I’ve seen so far from you - amazingly represents what you say and mean at the same time with it, love it! And well done to you and your team!
I am a field technician for a communications company. I use the M2 iPad Pro (11”) on a daily basis while on the job. I use apps like Notability to mark up layout drawings and product drawings, as well as getting all daily notes and excel sheets upgraded. That Pencil is amazing. I don’t doubt that the M1 would serve me just as well, but this is the one my company decided to get and I am very thankful for it.
Watching this after the New M4 iPad was released he got mostly all of the expectations correct like the camera moving to landscape and the speakers getting better and the new tandem OLED screen so that's some really good intuition by Marques!
