I always wondered how to keep the wife and kids out of the room while I sorted cards. Never thought of putting the table in front of the door. Genius!!😂
Or the ultimate: have a video on in the background of someone sorting or ripping cards WHILE you sort cards. Preferably a video of the same product you are sorting.
I love sorting cards. I find it very therapeutic. I especially like going through older cards because of the nostalgia of being a kid, and it brings back great memories.
I recently got back into the hobby because I started going through boxes of cards I've had for years and remembered how much I enjoy the process of sorting. I know you have really minimized the amount of cards you keep in your PC but I would love to hear how you would sort as a collector vs a dealer. Thanks for a great video.
I'd love to see a collector version on this. Unfortunately, having a full time job and other responsibilities prevents me from going through my thousands of cards to organize them all. I did make some boxes of just Bowman Chrome 1st cards but outside of that I'd need a team of volunteers to finish up the rest 😂
Good timing to find this video! I'm sitting at my desk going through pick-ups from today's card show. Always good to see and learn other people's methods. Thank you
this might be helpful as I'm thinking the last 5 years of big box store splurges in the form of mediocre blasters needs to go. There's about 5 cards I'd keep out of them all. It's now just dumb. LOL. I'm gonna take pennies on the dollar at some point here soon and just put that into something that won't take up space and I'll like.
Loved the video! The sorting process is my favorite part of cards! Your set up is very similar to mine! Thanks for all the tips. I have taken and used many of them.
Back when i collected heavily, i loved building the parallel sets so those types of lots i would of been all over. Same for the auto/jsy lots. I do something similar but you go even further and it all makes sense. Great video as usual
Chris, you have a lot of low price cards there. How do you track these from a tax accounting perspective? It seems like it would be difficult in terms of accuracy, records keeping, and time involved. Perhaps a video on this subject would be interesting.
Sorry I'm late on commenting but thank you for this video. As a part time dealer I appreciate all of your looks into parts of dealing like this one. Lots or player lot are definitely something I have thought about doing but I am curious who the various 10 players you pull for their own lots? Retired Hockey I assume the second one would me Lemieux.
I love your videos..and I feel the same way it's therapeutic..lol ..I have probably 750 color mosaic optic and prizm...how do you list your lots?? And you only take a picture of the cards together?
There's one tricky section. The non Hall of Famers that go for more than a common Hall of Famer. Don Mattingly and Bo Jackson come to mind. Not good enough necessarily to be single player, but too good for the All Star non Hall of Famer lot. What do you do with them?
Chris, what years of card would you consider Vintage? I have thousands of cards from the mid 80s that are forty years old but I don’t call them vintage.
I'd be really interested in seeing your list of players that you set aside for bulk lots! I'm new to the resale game, might help me out a bit. Sorting cards is one of my absolute favorite things to do. Putting things in order, getting them in their proper places. The best.
Gr8 way of sorting bulk cards to lot up and sell Chris..😍😮 That's a good way to make these type of cards that might be hard to sell individually..🎉😊 Thanks for the informative content/video.. Happy Holidays...🤗👍💕🔥👊
A couple of years ago you made a video about Comc and back then I believe to remember that you sent in cards worth 2$-25$ value. What kinda cards are you sending to Comc nowadays? Watching this video it seems like you use a different strategy for Comc. Thank you for your amazing content!
My strategy is pretty similar today. Mainly cards valued $2 to $25 or so. I'll occassionally send more valuable cards and there are some in that range that are not worth sending to them
This is a good idea, but in Canada the postage price for the big lots and boxes is ridiculous. They charged me $20 to send a 100 count box across the country. So the postage fees are prohibitive for big ebay lots.
I use one-row boxes as much as possible, and put everything in team bags (about 50 cards per bag). If there is space left in the box, I use bubble wrap to make it tight.
Mike Modano? good luck with that.... Fantastic player tho, he just premiered at the worst time for sports cards, lol.. As a hockey collector it really sucks because none of these late 80's or early to mid 90's Hall of Famer hockey players have any desirable rookies (or cards in general from the 90's) at all with the exception of 90 OPC Premier PSA 10's - so it's really difficult to make player lots out of them... Of course Wayne Gretzky lots ALWAYS sell, because he's on that Jordan level, so most Gretzky's are as good as cash... But yea, late 80's and early 90's hockey is really difficult to sell unless you have rare parallels, certified pack pulled autos, serial numbered cards or GU relics (which were more mid to later 90's) or something ....
This scene is why I typically don’t touch a card unless it’s $50 or more. I ideally just look for $250 or more cards. I have to get a great deal to touch anything under that mark. Time sorting and listing steals most of your time. Make sure it’s worth a few hundred dollars if you’re going to forfeit a half day of your life away. 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️ Less is more. The faster you learn that, the more money you’ll make.
This is very insightful- thanks Chris! Question about your buying: do you ever buy collections/lots with the primary intention of re-selling as player lots on eBay? Or is this more of the result of you processing the "bulk" of a collection after the top cards?
Its more the result of processing the bulk of various collections I buy. If someone has a large player lot already, I'll certainly buy it but that doesn't happen much.
I was wondering if before you moved did you have a garage? I think I heard you mention a garage in this video. Not sure if garages are common from where you were previously living in Europe.
I’m super interested in how you use your space. Also interested if your wife has any rules about how you store/keep your cards. I know you’ve mentioned deposit boxes for your high end cards, but does your collection space needs ever get on your wife’s nerves lol. My wife doesn’t give me to much grief, but I have a very small collection as I’ve only been collecting again for about a year.
I had a 2-card garage when I lived in California and it was essentially my office/mini warehouse. My wife has no issue at all with cards, but I still make a point to keep them in the "card room" and not have them spill out into other parts of the house.
How would you go about taking modern base prizm, select, optic and donruss rated rookie, mosaic, rookie cards to sale. Sample size of 200 of each, 2 of each player and 75-25 offense defense. Same for When it comes to the silver and variation of non rookies? Also I would be interested in hearing your thoughts on where the single/ lot threshold lies for modern / ultra modern rookies is there a market for base in bulk of current rookies?
Modern base cards are next to impossible to sell, unless you can break it up by star player. I generally donate all modern base cards that isnt a notable star. Same with RCs more than a couple years old.
@@collectorinvestordealerI thought so based on your comments in the video. What about the current players RC, 2020-2022 prizms, select, optic? Would you put those in lots or group by player as well?
How would you sort and sell a bulk amount of 87 donruss baseball ? Cards were already sorted into player, there are 500 or so of each card. Any suggestion on how to lot this up for sale on ebay? Thank you.
If you have 500 of each player, I would sell 500-count lots of each player. The commons might never sell so maybe not worth listing those, but the stars should
Thanks for sharing! Question. I was checking out your eBay store and noticed you have quite a few rare Cal Ripken cards listed. How did you decide to part with those?
How do you decide on what cards to keep for your PC? Besides Cal, are there any others you keep besides high grade rookies? Would you not keep the Marcus Allen because you have one in a high grade or you just don't collect/keep these types of cards?
I have done that quite a bit. You get pennies on the dollar (which I understand is fair from the dealer's perspective) but I am more likely to buy that way than to sell that way.
The flat rate USPS priority box options are usually your best bet. Try to pack in 200-600ct boxes tightly with lots of cushioning to minimize movement.
Hey Chris, I'm an elementary school teacher in California always looking for commons to give out to my students. I heard you say you donate yours....how can I find someone in my area that would be willing to donate cards for my cause, thx
I always wondered how to keep the wife and kids out of the room while I sorted cards. Never thought of putting the table in front of the door. Genius!!😂

Thanks for the inside look, Chris. What is the card condition range or standard you apply for these lots? I'm particularly curious about the junk wax.
Generally NM or better. Surely a couple exceptions slightly lower slip in to each.
So why do you not do shows much? I would think you'd do well!
Have had any success with TEAM lots- “Reds stars from 70’s and 80’s” etc. ? Trying to figure out how to get guys like Danny Tartabull sold : )
