@Dan Pierce yeah but dude he played for 24 years and in more than 35,000 games. He’s not just reminiscing about the glory days of high school baseball. He literally played in more games and got more hits than anyone ever. They’re right. What Pete is able to remember on the spot in such detail is nuts.
If the catcher is blocking home plate, the correct play for the runner is to run over the catcher if they cannot reach the plate on a slide, and that's what Pete did on that play. The film clearly shows Pete was starting to make his famous head first slide but then stayed upright when he realized Fosse was blocking the plate. Fosse could have left a part of the plate open but didn't, so he paid the price. Frankly, I would not be inviting Charlie Hustle to run me over :).
The rulebook says the catcher can't block the plate without the ball. Fosse did and got hit. How was his career ruined if he played another nine years? Lots of guys make the All Star team only once, and he was a late addition.

When talking about that play, Rose usually says that he initially was settling up to dive into home plate, but felt he would break his collarbone, so instead, he bowled him over. Many criticize Rose for doing that in an exhibition game, but by the same token, since it was an exhibition game, Ray Fosse should not have been blocking the plate, risking injury to himself. He should’ve been away from the plate and tried to apply a sweep tag. That way, neither he or Rose would’ve gotten hurt. Fosse has only himself to blame for his injury. People seem to forget a few things. All Star Game was BIG back then. Rose was planning a head first slide but Fosse is blocking the plate. There is nowhere to slide. Pete pulls up at the last second with no other option but to run into him. Unwritten rule back then is if you block the plate you accept the consequences. You are giving yourself up in order to stop the runner from touching the plate. You are fair game. The baseline belongs to the runner. If you block it, accept the consequences. There was nothing wrong with what Pete did.
If that Ray dude is still salty after all these years from that, particularly when he was blocking the plate, dude has some serious perception problems!
Ray Fosse was a great catcher of course, but he has been an outstanding broadcaster, just had to step away from booth after battling cancer for 16 years, kept it secret from public, he’s one tough dude too. This is coming from someone named after Pete Rose, love them both.
Perhaps the rules were at fault (which have since been changed), both Fosse (catcher) and Rose (base runner) appear to act instinctively (Fosse blocking the plate and Rose knocking him off the plate). Pete Rose does make a good point that if the ball arrived at Fosse a split second earlier, that he (Rose) could have been seriously hurt, the extra time allowing Fosse to lower his body, and brace for impact (the collision Laws of Momentum and Inertia now favoring Fosse **). Unfortunate any time an athlete suffers an injury on the field. ** note: issuing an official/unofficial science disclaimer if I'm wrong about that science stuff
Those games meant more to the players back then. It was a great time in baseball with full integrity and pride of being in an Allstar game. Way before big money changed it. I would agree with you in most other situations though.
I didn't have a problem with Pete taking out Fosse at the plate. In those days, that's how the game was played. But as much as he's trying to minimize the consequences of that play, the truth is he seperated Fosse's shoulder and he was never the same hitter after that, especially power wise. I'm not blaming Pete but if he's going to set the record straight, set it straight.

Jesus Christ Rose, just own it! Back then you said you were "going for the slide, and he left me no recourse"....it's a fucking exhibition game, you separated and broke his shoulder. The All Star game , even back then, was an exhibition game and it was an unwritten rule to take it easy. I don't think he intended to hurt him, but was uncalled for.
I was a catcher in hs & college. If I did not have the ball in my glove as the runner was approaching I moved out of the base path. In hs if I did have the ball players would barrel into me knocking the wind out of me or I got cleats to my legs. And these were just regular season hs games & even the teenaged girls would knock into me as hard as they could. Its fosse's fault if he did not have the ball to get out of the way. It was just instinctual to get away from blocking the plate bc what's the point of blocking if u dont have the ball? Fosse is still not over it ? Did it ruin his career ? I know he played several more seasons but was he a worse player ? This whole thing reminds me of the movie rudy when Rudy takes the other player down hard. He starts going after Rudy & the coach asks him " what's ur problem " & the guy responds " it's a practice & this a hole thinks it's the superbowl. The coach goes nuts on him & says " if u had half the heart rudy has you would be an all american . " then the coach demotes his position. So I dont get it people that are pissed off about fosse are mad bc it was just an all star game? Didnt that also determine who would get home field advantage in the world series or is that another sport. How can u be mad at a guy for giving 100% effort. ? I remember the nba 93 all star game where the east lost a close one but riley was the east coach & had jordan taking shots & working all of the players hard to win the game. Jordan as usual was a mad man draining a huge 3 from the corner deep. If they didnt care they would not have tried that hard to win. Also u want to entertain the ticket holders & the home audience. It would not be fun to watch players not caring & playing awful.

I don't know if the play actually physically hurt Fosse nearly as much as the fact it was Pete Rose and the amount of highlight attention it ultimately got through the years of baseball. I think had it been someone else catching then Rose would have approached it the same way. It just happened to be Fosse at that point. Could Rose have let up? Perhaps but that wasn't the way he played. Now they approach an All-Star Game like they are afraid a multi-million dollar pitcher might throw his arm away. If it doesn't happen then it could in his next start. Some guys just have bad mechanics even though they enjoy periods, sometimes brief, of success. Mark Fydrich for example. Ludicrous to give home field to the league that wins the All-Star Game simply because teams work all year for that best record. Why should it be decided in an exhibition game? Too much money and too little pride.
It wasn’t JUST an exhibition game if MLB was giving an award or incentive that would give a future benefit to the winner. So I see NO problem with Rose having played hard. Players who were worried about injury could have asked to sit out the game!
As a college softball catcher if I was standing right in front of the plate waiting for the throw these monster girls would slam into me so hard & I never complained about it. If the ball wasn't even close I left room. I guess the issue is it was an all star Game so it's supposed to be loosey goosey. I'm gathering.
I really like the swipe tag that Carlton Fisk made famous if not created after his knees had been injured. Wish Fosse would have attempted a swipe tag and had his left foot at the front of the plate. With the amount of money the current guys make I would not let a nut like Rose truck me in a game that doesnt count in the standings.
Nobody seems to mention a key fact about this incident. Rose was safe! How was he at fault when he scored the winning run? Blocking the plate without the ball is wrong. That’s what’s happened here.
Ray fosse knew how Pete played if he didn’t wAnt to get hurt should have let the ball go through. I used to have friends in baseball I trucked. Had friends in basketball that received elbows from me. Some of em knew how I played and accepted it or gave it back in return. No hard feelings on my part. Some couldn’t take it and we weren’t friends anymore. So be it.
I remember that play I was 11 years old and rooting for the American league Pete is correct there was nothing wrong with that play also the All Star game back then meant something it was not the beauty contest that it is today. In fact if you want to see what a All Star game used to be like you would be better off watching a All Star game from the minor leagues because you know the players want to perform well there.
The "Me, Me, Me" Pete Rose attitude is wearing thin. What about the 1980 NLCS Gm4 highlight on RUclips, where Rose barrels over the Houston Astro's catcher, jumps up and runs to the Phillies dugout, WITHOUT giving the Astro's catcher any acknowledgement or concern. One word will follow Rose into eternity...BUSH!
Pete is good! He knows his baseball just like dog does. To bad for Fosse, his career was never the same, but life is about choices and his was to block the plate without having the ball. He made his choice and Pete his. Unfortunately, Fosse made the wrong choice.
was a terrible play...pete was a shameless self promotor...everyone playing that day agrees...The ball was never thrown to Fosse...it was a joke...just like him running to 1b...even Johnny Bench called it out

You mean the ASG was bigger back then vs today ?
@@paleo704 yes, today its a meaningless game. then it had meaning.
If you don't wanna get hit by a train don't stand on the tracks.
Yep, the baseline belongs to the runner. Stand in the way and you get what you deserve. Pete did nothing wrong here. It’s just baseball.
Pete never changed his story of Warren Giles and the "vein in the neck popping." The league president says win, you better win.

Amos Otis, 5 time all star, 3 gold gloves, 4 top 10 MVP finishes. Great player.
I thought Fosse suffered a separated shoulder. How did he not miss any games? I didn't know that Rose missed the next three games.
I looked it up and Rose was right. Fosse played in the all-star game on the 14th and then in Cleveland's next game on the 16th.
It takes a lot for Pete Rose to miss a baseball game at all. Three of them? Hmm.
The people that should have ran for President. Never did. Never say never. Pete Rose !
He said once"I will baseball even in hell wearing a jacket full of fire".
Imagine ruining someone’s career in a exhibition game
Imagine blocking the plate in an "exhibition game." without the ball. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
Imagine being a soft ass bitch
Those games meant more to the players back then. It was a great time in baseball with full integrity and pride of being in an Allstar game. Way before big money changed it. I would agree with you in most other situations though.
he played for how many more years? wow oh no it must have been ruined
He did not ruin hos career.
The real reason Pete changed his mind about sliding was when he realized his betting slips may have fallen out of his pocket.........
“We played the game right.”
Put Pete Rose in the Hall of Fame where he belongs!!
Fosse was completely blocking the plate. Pete had no where to go. On the contrary, Buster Posey wasn't blocking the plate
All Star games are a waste of time and the only thing that can happen is a great player can get hurt in a meaningless game.
Go home snowflake
@@Mark-sj3xb Look at the dumbshit Mark that thinks All Star games are important can you see Pete Rose in an old timers game that means nothing breaking hips of other HOFers when I play I play hard (hey Pete this is for fun)...I met Pete Rose in person at a private signing and talk at the Isle of Capri in Bettendorf he is a dick and a liar, he told us he never bet on baseball lying to everyone while sitting at a poker table I knew he was lying to us.
If you see film the impact knocked fosse back about 4 steps than he bowled over cmmn Pete rose you knew what you were doing and it was very very very intentional
Baseball when it was real!!!
I will bet he never apologizes for hitting Fosse....LOL
Exactly right, Natalie
@@StarCityAudits thanks. Do u think rose should be in the hof? I know gambling on ur team is equivalent to capital punishment in the criminal courts. I think he gets in when he passes away which would suck b/c he would not enjoy it. If he did not gamble as a player he should have gotten in b/c he would be going in as a player not a manager when je did the betting. I have heard he did it as a player at the end & if he did it af a player than no go. But I'm not sure about that as a player.
Pete Rose is a hall of fame wrestler

@@killerbee6569 This man is a warrior. Kane tombstones this dude more times than anyone. Pete Rose never gave up no matter how many times Kane kicked his azz. Pete Rose is a hall of fame legend. Plus wrestling hall of famer President Trump is gonna make an executive order to put Pete Rose in the baseball hall of fame.
The American League showed their superiority in the World Series.
If it weren't for Pete Rose if someone said who is Ray Fosse you would probably answer isn't that the dance guy?
Perhaps another catcher wouldn't have blocked the plate. He may have even moved the bat. Hell, the ump could've moved it too.
What is Pete supposed to due, say excuse me your in my way.
This was a thug move even for those days.
A grown man being afraid of his daddy....LOL
I have my 13U kid watch as many bites on Pete that I can find. George Brett as well. Good to see A-Rod with his passion as well.
You should make your kid wear a 1970's Pete Rose style haircut.
When Alex slapped that ball away it was the modern day Fosse play
Lol. I don't think Pete's 70s haircut was in style then.
@@SouthernSkeptic Jimmy Connors had the Pete Rose haircut.
So be it.
Pete would have been out if it had been Carlton Fisk at the plate.
Did y Ray Fosse Oakland A's Cynthia beat the hell out of Cincinnati red. Peter Rose my God. It's me in the Hall of Fame
Pete is good! He knows his baseball just like dog does.
To bad for Fosse, his career was never the same, but life is about choices and his was to block the plate without having the ball. He made his choice and Pete his. Unfortunately, Fosse made the wrong choice.
I’m always gonna take PR place

was a terrible play...pete was a shameless self promotor...everyone playing that day agrees...The ball was never thrown to Fosse...it was a joke...just like him running to 1b...even Johnny Bench called it out
Cause it was a all-star game an u don't go laying sumone out. That's probably other reason ur not in hof
So a catcher can Block the Entire plate with his body and the runner is supposed to do what exactly?...Jump OVER him?...Stop it...You wanna block the plate you should expect to get knocked on your azz...People also act like Pete Rose is the only player in History to knock over a catcher...Was an All Star game so WHY is the catcher BLOCKING the plate?
He makes ugly look good
