      @Dan Pierce yeah but dude he played for 24 years and in more than 35,000 games. He’s not just reminiscing about the glory days of high school baseball. • @johnc9711
    @johnc9711 5 лет назад +39

    If the catcher is blocking home plate, the correct play for the runner is to run over the catcher if they cannot reach the plate on a slide, and that's what Pete did on that play. The film clearly shows Pete was starting to make his famous head first slide but then stayed upright when he realized Fosse was blocking the plate. Fosse could have left a part of the plate open but didn't, so he paid the price. Frankly, I would not be inviting Charlie Hustle to run me over :).

    • @1950Grendel
      @1950Grendel 4 года назад +2

      The rulebook says the catcher can't block the plate without the ball. Fosse did and got hit. How was his career ruined if he played another nine years? Lots of guys make the All Star team only once, and he was a late addition.

    Pete was a hard ass, hot head and as blue collar as you can get as a human being and Professional Baseball Player, there was no middle ground for him to chose to negotiate or compromise away, He was also a very proud and arrogant man, He has mellowed out a bit and we are seeing more of his humanity with all his flaws that he is able to now confess to make amends, we have to now start honoring and respecting the man more than the baseball player before we don't have him around anymore to share his life and experiences, both on and off the field.

  • @alan30189
    @alan30189 5 лет назад +6

    When talking about that play, Rose usually says that he initially was settling up to dive into home plate, but felt he would break his collarbone, so instead, he bowled him over.
    Many criticize Rose for doing that in an exhibition game, but by the same token, since it was an exhibition game, Ray Fosse should not have been blocking the plate, risking injury to himself. He should’ve been away from the plate and tried to apply a sweep tag. That way, neither he or Rose would’ve gotten hurt. Fosse has only himself to blame for his injury. Back then, though, players played to win, and would do what it took to win, exhibition game or not.

      It was an all star game. I don't care how much Pete talks it up as a big deal, but it's a glorified exhibition game. Imagine McDavid gets chopped down in an all star game. Fosse may be a whining Wanda since he had a career following, but Rose is too arrogant to own up to any of the stupidity of trying to hurt an opponent in an exhibition game. This wouldn't even be a discussion if it was during a regular season game, let alone a playoff one.

    I've been critical of Pete Rose over the years, but this is one thing I agree with him on regarding Fosse. If you watch the clip, Pete walks over to Fosse and asks him if he's ok. Pete was doing his job and playing the game the way they played it back then. It sucks when guys get hurt and you hope nobody gets hurt, but that is or WAS part of the game until the Buster Posey Rule.

      Sorry bro, but I must disagree with you on that one. No one ever played an all star game like that before. It's an exhibition, not a real game that counts. He wouldn't do interviews or autograph's if Rose was there. Pete Rose is a dick and always has been. He was a great player, but a liar, a cheat, and a terrible human being to go along with that. I liked it when the leagues were distinct and had their own presidents. It really meant something to be a fan of one of the leagues, now it is all the same. Reminds me of Ronzoni and Prince spaghetti. I remember seeing the Ronzoni plant in Queens and think Prince was a Boston company. Both are now owned by some conglomerate in PA. Pretty sure it is the same pasta going into boxes marked Ronzoni or Prince. That is what MLB is now like. The passion of winning that game, as described by Pete, is long gone.

Pete Rose does make a good point that if the ball arrived at Fosse a split second earlier, that he (Rose) could have been seriously hurt, the extra time allowing Fosse to lower his body, and brace for impact (the collision Laws of Momentum and Inertia now favoring Fosse **). Unfortunate any time an athlete suffers an injury on the field. ** note: issuing an official/unofficial science disclaimer if I'm wrong about that science stuff

    I didn't have a problem with Pete taking out Fosse at the plate. In those days, that's how the game was played. But as much as he's trying to minimize the consequences of that play, the truth is he seperated Fosse's shoulder and he was never the same hitter after that, especially power wise. I'm not blaming Pete but if he's going to set the record straight, set it straight.

    I was a catcher in hs & college. If I did not have the ball in my glove as the runner was approaching I moved out of the base path. In hs if I did have the ball players would barrel into me knocking the wind out of me or I got cleats to my legs. And these were just regular season hs games & even the teenaged girls would knock into me as hard as they could. Its fosse's fault if he did not have the ball to get out of the way. It was just instinctual to get away from blocking the plate bc what's the point of blocking if u dont have the ball? Fosse is still not over it ? Did it ruin his career ? I know he played several more seasons but was he a worse player ? This whole thing reminds me of the movie rudy when Rudy takes the other player down hard. He starts going after Rudy & the coach asks him " what's ur problem " & the guy responds " it's a practice & this a hole thinks it's the superbowl. The coach goes nuts on him & says " if u had half the heart rudy has you would be an all american . " then the coach demotes his position. So I dont get it people that are pissed off about fosse are mad bc it was just an all star game? Didnt that also determine who would get home field advantage in the world series or is that another sport. How can u be mad at a guy for giving 100% effort. ? I remember the nba 93 all star game where the east lost a close one but riley was the east coach & had jordan taking shots & working all of the players hard to win the game. Jordan as usual was a mad man draining a huge 3 from the corner deep. If they didnt care they would not have tried that hard to win. Also u want to entertain the ticket holders & the home audience. It would not be fun to watch players not caring & playing awful.

    I don't know if the play actually physically hurt Fosse nearly as much as the fact it was Pete Rose and the amount of highlight attention it ultimately got through the years of baseball. I think had it been someone else catching then Rose would have approached it the same way. It just happened to be Fosse at that point. Could Rose have let up? Perhaps but that wasn't the way he played. Now they approach an All-Star Game like they are afraid a multi-million dollar pitcher might throw his arm away. If it doesn't happen then it could in his next start. Some guys just have bad mechanics even though they enjoy periods, sometimes brief, of success. Mark Fydrich for example. Ludicrous to give home field to the league that wins the All-Star Game simply because teams work all year for that best record. Why should it be decided in an exhibition game? Too much money and too little pride.

    • @08174958
      @08174958 2 года назад +1

      It wasn’t JUST an exhibition game if MLB was giving an award or incentive that would give a future benefit to the winner. So I see NO problem with Rose having played hard. Players who were worried about injury could have asked to sit out the game!
