Don’t do what I did on a 2.0 8v gti and install the tensioner the wrong way around which meant it was locked against the block unable to turn and shredded the back off the new timing belt. Luckily it didn’t break or skip timing and I got another belt on it

Oof! Sounds like you got away lightly! That's why it's so important to bar the engine over a few times before cranking it over.
