I'm going to assume y'all know that Lucilla and Maximus were lovers long ago, BEFORE he met his wife. It's made obvious, in all the dialogue leading up to 33:11. She just told him "I've been alone all my life. Except with you." Meaning he is the love of her life! Two people in a desperate situation, in a prison cell, not knowing if they'll ever see each other again.... It's a sad but real kiss, reaffirming their love. With all the butchery and evil in this film.... Some people still want to judge these two, for sharing one moment of tenderness....For me it's the most beautiful moment in the whole film
… Although, actually, the times don’t line up. It assumes that Maximus had time to impregnate Lucilla, marry someone else, move to Spain, impregnate his wife, so that his son by his Spanish wife was the same age as Lucius?
Glad you could appreciate how great this movie was Tony. It is one of my all time favorites. Ironically, the first time I watched this was at home on dvd, unfortunately. But as I sat to watch, my wife had said she didn’t want to watch. She sat in the room, but occupied herself with other tasks. About 20 minutes into the movie, she asked if I would restart it, because she wanted to watch. 🤣🤣🤣 Such an epic movie. Phoenix was robbed of the Oscar for this role!
DAMMIT! You guys are making me cry!!!! My son and I saw it in the theatre, was one of the greatest films we had seen together. I still get emotional watching this... you guys are making me tear up worse!
Actually everyone in the Roman Coliseum can hear what's said from the center, even in a whisper. It was built perfectly acoustic. Also, the term "bread and circus" originated from the Gladiator battles.
You both are so tenderhearted. Please don’t lose that sort of innocence because of these movies of what history has provided for us to watch but in between time I really enjoy your reactions, you two are a really sweet couple. thanks for sharing Please take care and be safe.🫶🏻❤️🤠
Beautiful reaction. Such a great movie with so many timeless truths. That honor, truth, bravery, love and something to believe in and fight for can always triumph (There have been so many Commodus’ in history and there’s always another coming along.) You guys are absolutely fantastic- keep up the great work.
At 12:50 Maximus grabbed two horses. To ride them both to exhaustion so he could get home as fast as possible. When one horse is done jump on the other to continue. Epic movie and great reaction by the wife.
As sad as it was, I take a kind of comfort in that it made sense for Maximus to die in triumph. He still got to give the wishes of Marcus Aurelius to the people, and from the very beginning of the film, all he really wanted was to go home and be with his family. It wasn't the way we might have first thought or wanted, but he got to be reunited with his family. He got to go home.
There are two movie villains that I love to h ate, Commodus and Tavington from the Patriot. Joaquin Phoenix played the villainy of Commodus perfectly. Commodus had zero redeeming qualities, there was no reason to take out Maximus's family like he ordered. Then he had the nerve to taunt Max about how their last moments were. This movie deserved all the awards it won.
Joaquin Phoenix is a method actor so to help him with his performance he asked the other cast members to treat him like shit while on set to help him stay in character. True story!
For Toni - Robin And Marion (Connery, Hepburn) Dangerous Liaisons (Close, Malkovich, Pfeiffer) For a really, really good story, in a cold war spy movie, "The Spy Who Came In From The Cold"
Great reaction like always. Love this movie! "What we do in life echoes in eternity" This quote gets truer and truer the older I get! At the very start of the movie Maximus overrides an order from Quintus to move their artillery back. He says the danger to their cavalry is "acceptable." This might give you the idea that Maximus is a callous commander who uses his men as pawns. He immediately turns this on its head by going off to his secret side army to lead the cavalry charge himself. He wouldn't order his men to take a risk he wouldn't take himself. That is a beautifully subtle bit of character writing to clue the audience in to what kind of man and leader the main character is. "Sometimes the frost makes the blade stick." This is my favorite historical line in cinema. Praetorian guards (The soldiers guarding the emperor, like the secret servic, were elite soldiers, but with limited field and combat experience). That word of advice he gives the soldier before killing him is advice even the lowest soldier in the ranks in that campaign wouldn't need. They would know... the frost on the blade would make it stick to the sheath, so best to at least prep it for utilization beforehand (like drawing it before intended use). He is challenging the soldier with a direct call to his lack of skill and expertise in true combat. And there are some others fun-facts, the scene in which Commodus yells "Am I not merciful?" right in his sister's face was improv at that point. Joaquin Phoenix was just scripted to say it the one time. He ad-libbed the repeat of the line as a menacing yell right in her face and that is real shock on Connie Nielsen's face. The actor playing Proximo (Oliver Reed) died during production, if you rewatch the movie with that in mind you can tell that some scenes were altered to use the remaining footage they had of him, that probably explains this scene. Also, look when they actually stab Proximo, they filmed it so you just see his outline, concealing their use of a stand-in. I´m was curious if you'd pick up on one of the melodies and structure of that battle music in Gladiator was also used in a piece for Pirates since I guess Zimmer just really liked that melody and figured it fit both epic battle and epic daredevil stuns and escapes pretty well. Good memory on the ears! Keep up the good work.
It might be some consolation to know that the Costa Rican actress who portrayed Maximus' ill-fated wife fared much better in real life. She married director Ridley Scott in 2015.
I love that Russell Crowe did all his own stunts and was an expert horseman. The wounds on his face in the beginning battle were real. The horse he was riding spooked and backed into branches of a tree. The director decided to leave them as battle wounds.
15:39 The big guy there is a German actor named Ralf Möller. He played Conan The Barbarian in a tv spin-off called Conan The Adventurer, replacing Arnold Schwarzenegger, who played Conan in the movies.
Fighting in the arena was a form of entertainment. A gladiator was like a Movie/Rock star the more a gladiator won a fight the more rich and fame they got. Most of the time it was real blood and death, other arenas did fake deaths. And Yes they did just come out with a 2nd Gladiator movie this week. If Possible I would like to recommend the show "Arcane: League Of Legends" to add to your list of show to watch. Season one is out season 2 is about to wrap up this week.
What a Treat this will be tonight💝I'd Missed Your First-Premiere but I did go back and watch this Reaction before; will be FUN to relive the Best Parts with Y'all here tonight! 🤩🤭😭🫂👍
LEGENDS OF THE FALL if you haven’t seen it!! Another phenomenal movie!! Brad Pitt, Anthony Hopkins. Every emotion you could feel. 😊 Great reaction to this guys! ❤
A modern epic....great story, fantastic script, excellent cast & the set design was perfect. (How about watching some classic epic films?....like "Lawrence of Arabia", "Ben Hur", "Cleopatra", "Dr Zhivago" etc). --Here's the question; who is worse, Commodus or Percy from "The Green Mile"?
Lucilla and Maximus had a history---but if dialogue is ignored, folks don't know that. I had to stop watching after the meltdown over one kiss----in a film filled with butchery.
If there are past lives, most of us have had at least one under the Caesars of Rome. They were cruel. We could have been peasant or soldier or both. Appears that your wife could have been there before. Who knows? Her reaction came from a gut knowing. Imagine, being one of the gardeners / farmers out there and your master is away at war. Before you know it, he must have done something wrong, because in the blink of an eye, you and all your family are dead too. At the whim of a ceasar.
All right. What a great reaction. It's about time we seen Tonyi cry..... Now please consider watching tears in the Sun with Bruce Willis or casualties of war with Michael j. Fox and Sean Penn
Braveheart was so historically inaccurate that anyone with the teeniest knowledge of history was appalled by it. Within minutes of watching I was shouting at the screen and some of the scenes were unbelievable. This is a great film, I can’t add the other film to the category, but if you want a fantasy film then I suppose it fits that, each to their own 👍.
Toni, you beautiful soul, you should give your husband more credit when he proposes a movie to watch with you 😄 My ex didn't want to watch this either and took a lot of convincing but then there she was crying her guts out and praising it as one of her favorite movies. Give us "boys" some credit ladies! 😉 Also, it's implied in the movie that Maximus and Lucilla (the Emperor's sister) had a "thing" before they both got married to different people, it's implied that there's still some feelings there between them, that's why it's easy for them to kiss, it's like kissing your high-school ex after you both separated amicabily because life and duty took you elsewhere. Also, back in the Roman days, it was different times 😉 Love you guys. Cheers from Italy.
Did you change the way you edit the movies. Could just be me but looks like you’re obscuring more of the movie. Really like your reactions but this it too hard for me to follow. Sorry, probably just me, but had to stop after a few minutes.
David, Toni, the part where Commodus was trying to seduce his sister is, albeit, sickening to modern times. However, back in that time period it was common for elites to mate with sibling in order to produce a "pure" bloodline. As human beings, we now know inbreeding causes any number of mental disablilites, however, back then, they did not know this. Now, with all that being said, those disturbing scenes were added to the movie to ensure the audience would completely hate Commodus, not that we needed it after he killed his father, but it did further entrench the emotional distain for him. And for the record, Toni, please never lose that empathetic nature of yours. Do not let the movies harden you. That side of you is what draws people to you and the channel. Plus, David, please keep up with the "I don't know", we love the side-eye Toni gives you for it 😂
Why do all reactors forget or not even know in the first place about royal/nobility incest in history. Commodus's feelings for his sister wasn't surprising in the least.
Though certainly not as good as this film, I do think Braveheart and Last of the Mohicans are excellent films of a similar ilk that are worth watching. I can't remember if you two have watched either of them on the channel.
Last of the Mohicans was superb but I can't stand Braveheart because of its historical inaccuracies that portray the English as inhuman monsters. Prima Nocte being the prime example.

Huge fan, but couldn't watch this one because of the overlapping thing with the movie.....to distracting, And I REALLY wanted to see Toni's reaction to this one.
One of the sad things about this film was that the original script saw his character take on a bunch of Praetorians when they raided the Gladiator school. Obviously this had to be cut with his untimely death but it would have been great to see it and I think his acting career would have had a renaissance afterward.
It's funny how Scott has declared war on historians as he's gotten older. The history in this isn't good, not that it's mostly meant to be, but Napoleon and the sequel to this re aggressively bad with it
Women always make better reactors than men in that they tend to be more emotional. I don't mean to laugh in the face of your wife's tears but I still marvel over how emotional some women can get over a silly movie. I swear she acts like it's real life. But it does raise an interesting question. Isn't life itself full of enough tears and tragedy without trying to evoke sadness from movies, and then we call this entertainment? I guess deep down it's kind of a sickness we all have within ourselves seeing that we actually crave, seek, desire and even "enjoy" tragedy, sorrow, horror and death. "It was such a good movie!" "Why?" "Because it made me cry!" Hell, I can do that without watching movies! One look at my grocery bill is enough to make me cry!
Art reflects life. Everyone can relate to tragedy; everyone loses people. It's not a "Sickness." Why are you watching this reaction to a "Silly movie" if you hate heartfelt reactions?
@@barryscott8041 Where in this entire paragraph did you once see the word "hate"? You just demonstrated another interesting human attribute. The ability to arrive at your own conclusions by reading things that aren't even there. Amazing!
@@MikeTaylor-k9k I read every word, pal. "I still marvel over how emotional some women can get over a silly movie. I guess deep down it's a kind of sickness....'It was such a good movie!' Why? Because it made me cry! Hell, I can do that without watching movies!"-------So it's a sickness, not 'entertainment', you mock people's tears, nobody should watch this, and you have no use for any of it. Sounds like Hate to me, and I'm still wondering why you're even here, watching any of this
Hated this movie off the rip because how dam stupid it is to have a 1on1 meeting telling your sociopath son he wont rule Rome without ever giving it i writing to someone else 🤦♂️
Actually everyone in the Roman Coliseum can hear what's said from the center, even in a whisper. It was built perfectly acoustic. Also, the term "bread and circus" originated from the Gladiator battles.
When reactors are invested, the audience gets to see a movie "again for the first time". Thanks T & D.

@@kschneyer And in Gladiator II, Lucius' role is somewhat clarified.

"Why?" "Because it made me cry!" Hell, I can do that without watching movies!
I swear she acts like it's real life.....Isn't life full of enough tears and tragedy without trying to evoke sadness from movies, and then we call this entertainment?
