One of my favorite things about this movie is how it perfectly displays Marcus Aurelius’ philosophy, like the 4 chief virtues that Maximus incarnates (wisdom, justice, fortitude, temperance) or the quotes which come from Marcus Aurelius’ book “Nothing happens to anyone that he’s not fitted by nature to bear” and “Death smiles to us all, all a man can do is smile back”

The dirt was two fold, as I have heard.
One for keeping his palms from getting sweaty during battle
(Preventing the sword from flying out of your grip).
Two for the symbolism of the ground that he fights on.
(In Saving Private Ryan, one of the soldiers used to collect some dirt in small containers, for every time they conquered some territory in WWII)

The actor who played Proximus (the Gladiator trainer) was Oliver Reed. He was an extraordinary british actor, with a very interesting, fascinating and atypical life. He also was known for his alcoholism, having some scandals on TV and cinema as a consequence of this. During the filming of Gladiator in 1999, he sadly passed away. He had been sober for months, but one night (during a break from filming the movie) in an Irish pub in Malta (after a bet), he drank three bottles of Jamaican rum, eight bottles of German beer, numerous double whiskeys and challenged five young English sailors of the Royal Navy to arm-wrestling at The Pub bar (which after this incident was called Ollie's Last Pub). His bill, which was never paid, is preserved in a decorative frame in the bar.

38:18 The tigers were real. While there were some compound shots (separate shots of Russell Crowe and the tiger combined into one), most of those shots were really of Crowe, his opponent and the tigers. In fact, the one at 38:11 where Maximus rolls away just in time to avoid the swipe from the tiger's claws was an actual stunt performed by Crowe with the tiger. The tiger came so close to actually getting Crowe that they only attempted it once, as Crowe told the director that, "I hope you got that shot, because there's no way in hell I'm doing that again!"

The tigers were REAL. The scene where the tiger got on Maximus' back - the stunt double was holding some meat in his hand and the tiger was going after that. Then they did some basic CGI and other movie tricks to get rid of the meat in his hand and turn it into a knife.
This film won 5 Oscars and I would have to deep dive to look at who won instead of Gladiator for certain categories - like, I can't believe Joaquin Phoenix didn't win for best supporting actor and Hans Zimmer didn't win for the music. It did win an Oscar in Costume Design though - since you were talking about whether or not they were accurate. I'm no expert, so I can't say - but they certainly were beautiful. So glad you really loved this great film! 🙌🏽

Never occurred to me, based on what's shown in the movie, that sea snake venom was involved in Maximus' death. What I did see was a square implement, which does not allow the stab wound hole to close up on its own, forced into a vulnerable area of Maximus' body (the small of his back) near kidney, liver, major blood vessels. This wound led to Maximus' bleeding-out after the exertion involved during the fight with Commodus.

Hi there, English is not my first language, so I hope this English is OK. I have discovered your channel recently, and I have subscribed because I love your reactions. You both are very funny, sensible and sensitive. I would like to suggest to react to Society of the Snow, directed by J.Bayona, the director of The Impossible and Jurassic park the fallen kingdom. Society of the Snow is based on the book of the same title, and it is a true story occured in 1972, and it is considered the most important story of survival of the 20th century, according to the National Geographic. You two have proved to be , as I said before, very sensible and sensitive, so Society of the Snow would trigger many emotions inside of you. The story brought a great controversy at the time, I will not spoil it, but I am sure you will enjoy the story and the message that conveys. And Society of the Snow was the most watched movie in Netflix from the beginning of this year. I advice you to watch it in its original language. I hope I could watch your reactions to it soon. Thanks again for your channel and reactions!!..and keep going!! I am a huge fan of you two!

In the beginning you said „you should have put more time educating your son“ actually he did, Commodus was schooled and trained to an amount that he had the best education possible and Marcus Aurelius did his best, Commodus also in real history was just an awful son and person and an entitled brat… Marcus Aurelius is not to be blamed, everyone in history that wrote about his contact to Commodus says that Commodus was just an idiot/ a coward and someone who did not want to do his duties and only profit and do what he wants - not serving Rome or the people or something like that… he was one of the most horrible leaders the Roman Empire ever had… Marcus Aurelius was one of the best by the way and all his wars during his reign were only defending wars - he did not attack once or fight because he wanted to make the Roman Empire even greater in area / he just defended the Roman Empire and his borders… he is known as the Philosopher and still today you can buy many of his books that he wrote (or his daily journal that has been revealed to the public nowadays…) he was a noble man and he wanted only the best for the people and for his son - but for his son it didn’t quite workout, Commodus was just cruel, lazy, entitled and a shitty person overall

For people unfamiliar with Roman history (like me with English language, sorry) some nuances are difficult to understand.
Commodus "had" to kill Maximus, he knew that (with him alive) the legions would be loyal to him; many don't realize that, the soldiers who try to kill Maximus, are not legionnaires (except Quintus who in fact later goes to Rome, but that's another story), are praetorians (the Roman emperors personal guard).
That's why, when his soldier tells him they're camped in Ostia, Maximus knows that seeing him alive (the legionnaires thought he was dead) they will come back loyal to him.
