It did feel like deja vu. Now, I know why. 😅 I will therefore repeat my two Ridley Scott recommendations from your prior posting. 😁 "Matchstick Men" and "Kingdom of Heaven (Director's Cut)."
The actor who played Proximo (the Gladiator trainer) was Oliver Reed. He was an extraordinary british actor, with a very interesting, fascinating and atypical life. He also was known for his alcoholism, having some scandals on TV and cinema as a consequence of this. During the filming of Gladiator in 1999, he sadly passed away. He had been sober for months, but one night (during a break from filming the movie) in an Irish pub in Malta, he drank three bottles of Jamaican rum, eight bottles of German beer, numerous double whiskeys and challenged five young English sailors of the Royal Navy to arm-wrestling at The Pub bar (which after this incident was called Ollie's Last Pub). His bill, which was never paid, is preserved in a decorative frame in the bar.
Oh, I knew Oliver Reed died during filming and they also had to do some CGI tricks (and other tricks) to get a couple last scenes of him in the movie. I had a bit of a crush on Oliver after seeing him in The 3 Musketeers (from way back in the 70's, I think). I didn't know about all the details of his last night /day. The story about the pub and his unpaid bill is really poetic. 💔
52:05 I love the way that Maximus' image of the afterlife was the road leading downhill through the wheat fields towards his farm, with his wife and son waiting safely for him to come home. Even the way he described it to Marcus Aurelius at the start of the movie, it sounded like paradise.
In the film 300 there were words last spoken between The King & Queen, they were said by The King "Marry a good man and bare good Children." That is Love...
Really enjoy your reactions, especially this one...Ridley Scott almost always delivers. FYI, contrary to popular belief, in ancient Rome, the thumbs-up sign from the emperor did not mean spare the life of the defeated opponent. It was the command to kill him. A thumbs-down was the order to let the defeated man live.
You upload again, I comment again! One of the movies guaranteed to make me tear up at the end - much of the credit for that goes to the fantastic music by Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard! Fun fact: Lisa sings that song (and many others) in a made up "language" she created, with heavy Mediterranean influences (as in, she takes influences from the languages spoken in that area), but also other influences, like Irish.
"Hello and welcome to my channel" I love hearing those words from you Aria. You are very good at this, so soothing and thoughtful. I hope next year brings you many thousands more subscribers. Hope you are well, take care.
Great movie. I could never figure the dog part out, it was a substantial part of the beginning, and then nothing. Kinda like the dogs in Legends of the fall. Also I can’t figure how they let Calvary in behind them, and they didn’t seem to realize that big ass flaming arrow came from behind them as well.
So I looked it up after I saw the movie. The director wanted to kill it off in the beginning, but with everything else that happens, he thought it would be too cruel for the audience. And that it's supposed to be a wolf but they used a dog for it. I could be wrong but this is what I remember reading last month.
It’s not based on a true story but some of the characters were real life people (Marcus Aurelius and Commodus). You should read Marcus Aurelius Meditations. It’s still in print and is the foundation of the Stoic movement.
Russel Crowe as protagonist occupies 2 of my top 5 favorite movies. 'Gladiator' being one and 'Master and Commander - The Far Side of the World' being another. Love your reactions, Aria. You're very good at it. Keep 'em coming. 🤗
If you ever read my book meditations, Maximus sorta reminds me of a real Maximus I met named Claudius Maximus who was a stoic teacher that taught me well. I see similarities in this Maximus as with my former teacher and he definitely embodies the four virtues of stoicism. That being courage, justice, self control and wisdom.
Great react. You mentioned that the music reminded you of Pirates… it is actually the other way around as the waltz time music was used for this movie first. Search for a video of The Music of Gladiator… Hans Zimmer explains how it came to be.
In reality, Marcus Aurelius and his son Commodus were joint rulers for several years, after which the latter succeeded his father. The deaths of the two in the film are not historically accurate, but are presented for dramatic interest.
The script is based on the Anthony Mann film: The Fall of the Roman Empire. There are some elements of truth: Marcus Aurelius, Commodus and his craziness. I belive there was also a general, who was favoured by Marcus.
Especially, but not limited to that time period it was normal for royals to have siblings and other close family get together! It was normal for royals to keep the family pure by not mixing the genes with others outside their family. To give you a great example, Cleopatra wanted to be Queen but she couldn't unless she was married. She married the oldest of her 2 brothers. Years later he died so she then married her other brother in order to stay Queen. There are a LOT of other examples of such relationships to this day of Royal couples made up of siblings or cousins or Uncles and nieces! There are also such couples in entertainment. Singer Jerry Lee Lewis married his 13 year old first cousin (daughter of his aunt and uncle) 👱♀👱♀👗👗👠👠❤❤

I watched a RUclips short some days ago where Phoenix talks about how terrified he was at the set (as it was his first role in a major production) and how he couldn't do the first scene because he was visibly shaking 😄 Idk but i thought it was kind of cute. And btw. since you mentioned the Marsian, have you watched Arrival or Interstellar yet? Two Sci-Fi masterpieces imo.

The I have already written that the producers lifted a portion of the soundtrack from the movie ' Zulu " (Michael Caine's first movie) to give shouts to German Warriors. It must be humorous to be from South Africa or Germany to hear ancient Germans doing these shouts in the Zulu language?
Hello, if you don’t mind, can you do a movie reaction on a movie called, 1492: Conquest of Paradise. Adventure/Drama (1992). It stars Gérard Depardieu, Siqourney Weaver, Armand Assante. It portrays a version of the travels to the New World by the Italian explorer Christopher Columbus and the effect this had on indigenous peoples. Directed by Ridley Scott.
No, not a real story. Scott picked some Roman names out of a hat along with a few superficial stories and made his own movie. And actually, I'm okay with that. He told his own story, that's fine. But a lot of people are ignorant and think Scott's movie has some historicity to it. It has none. It's all bollocks. So, enjoy the movie and let it go at that.

No. The story itself is not true. Commodus did not kill his father Aurelius or die in the Coliseum. He was strangled by his personal bodyguard as part of a palace coup. He killed sister, Lucilla, soon after he became emperor. He also spent a good amount of time with his father in Germania, so Aurelius could attempt to teach him to be a good emperor.
