The problem isn't they can't play defense in today's game, it's that every time they try its a foul. Body them up? It's a foul. Contest a jumper? It's a foul. Contest a dunk? It's a foul. Reach for a steal? It's a foul.
It makes for horrible product. NBA isn't fun to watch in its current state. Silver needs to make GOOD changes.

I actually don’t think they thought hardcore basketball lovers would stay. I think they took what they believed was a calculated risk and thought they would bring in more than they lose and missed. And they have really shifted hard towards the international market over US especially in TV deals. It will be interesting to see the new TV deal cuz I don’t think the international fan likes the NBA style of play. They just like the talent level.

I am not from the US and pre internet times NBA games were quite hard to watch, still one game was on this station, another on that station and the whole 90s I watched NBA games this way. Then for a bit I had NBA subscription to watch the games. For quite while now I could have easy access to virtually any game I would like to watch - I don't bother. Just watch RUclips NBA content and from time to time check the scores out of nostalgia.

In my opinion this stats hunting era have James Harden e Westbrook has role models
I remember in 2018 playoffs when OKC lost 4-2 to the Jazz lead by a rookie. And Westrook in the press conference says: "I am the only player in NBA history to average a triple double for 3 season in a row, no one can take this from me"
Clearly a player who prefer stats than rings.
And how we can forget James Harden on his 30 points streak, the men literally playing in garbage time to reach 30 points. Pathetic

Watch any classic NBA clip, and you see offensive players having to fight through defenders every step of the way to the rim. The only "gimme" shots are surprise breakaways. Now watch modern NBA clips, where defenders will literally step out of they way to allow an offensive player to drive to the rim, and "gimme" shots are commonplace.

That is also why a lot more "all-star" stated players, sink in the playoffs. A bit of physicality and defense throws off modern offenses a lot.
There is a reason Jordan's 63 still stands, but once they cut defense out of the playoffs. The NBA is going to essentially become a complete statistical train wreck.

When teams aren't defending or are defending poorly, it no longer counts. And we aren't blind. Players nowadays are thinking "well since I'm an entitled child, my team needs me to score 90 points tonight because I'm the best and they know how hard I work on my brand, and I can't do any defense because I can't risk being fouled out. Because my team needs me to drop 90 because only I know how to play this game and my contract adds 20% if I maintain high scoring throughout the season." It's really bad. Every game has the worst defense I've seen in many many years.

  • @EndoftheTownProductions

The most frustrating part of many of these highlights is that the players pretty much go uncontested to the hoop for layups or dunks; there was more at the rim defense in the 1988 all-star game than in today's NBA. On defense, players know that any contact, or even any perceived contact, will be a foul based on the acting ability of the offensive player. Add to that the fact that actual fouls at the basket might even be a flagrant, so players just back away. Furthermore, since there is no hand checking and offensive players can travel or do the jump back off the dribble move (i.e. Harden or Steph) in order to gain space for a jumper, defensive players just pretty much have no chance against great shooters. The NBA knows that casual fans want to see lots of scoring, so this style of play will be allowed for years to come. The old days of the NBA are long gone.

The Oklahoma city TODDLERS with young/inexperienced KD, Russ who wasn't even an All Star in his sophomore season and Harden who was a ROOKIE!

The league started calling ticky-tack fouls on the defense and a lot of offensive guys learned how to take advantage of the way the game was being called by drawing fouls and getting to the line every other play. This has taught players to act like they were fouled while being the one to initiate contact and/or flopping. If they are not soft, this at least gives them the appearance of being soft and the league hasn't corrected the play calling yet.
