Thanks again! Sharing what I have learned to save you some headaches and keep things moving or maybe inspire you to come up with something like a gooder way
Another great video with a lot of information. I did not realize the blue paint on a 69 trans am was tyrol blue. Won’t be making the trans am nationals this year but it’s on my bucket list to get there at some point. Hopefully next year. Thanks for sharing your work .
Great job explaining your process on this Mockingbird paint job now you are making me go buy something else at Harbor Freight thanks for helping me spend my money buddy 😅😅
Ive been following your restoration work on the convertible you’ve made good time for sure! Ironically y daughter was just given a 69 SS convertible Camaro that will need total rebuild. We believe it to be a festival event pace car edition still researching the vin. It came white with orange stripes.
Looks great. Your sprint fan from Ohio. I been following the project all the way through. My Sprints gonna be going in the tear down mode soon. She's going in the body shop sometime this winter. The Ames show in Norwalk, Ohio was a great success. I took my motorhome up all 3 days. 700 show cars.
I've always heard within 24 hours for base clear, but probably better off within a few hours. At work the air line is 3/4 pvc pipe it goes along the ceiling drops down wherever a air chuck is needed. Then before it turns back up to ceiling there's a water bleed valve it works great for trapping water just bleed off the valves at the end of the day. It will be interesting to see how the harbor freight air dryer works hopefully it works out good for you.
Wishing we could make it to the T/A Nationals, but stuck in Houston for work. Really Impressive that you are at this stage on Mockingbird!!!! It's going to be Awesome!!!! Are you going to post a Nationals Video for us that can't attend?
I've heard up to 24 hours before the base needs to be cleared, but it probably depends on the environment and which brand product your using. Wish I was going to the nationals, one of these days I'll get there.
I let the last coat of base dry for almost an hour and zero issues with the tape lifting the paint and clear laid down nice. I don’t foresee any issues. Plus the line dryer worked great.
I don’t think so. I have done that in the past but it’s makes it almost impossible to paint the inside edge of the fenders the hinges really get in the way.
Cool video Jon ! Very good explanation of painting process. Are you going to video the Trans am show? Was hoping to go , but unable to make it. Keep up the great work and have a good weekend!
Typically you have a bit of time to clear. PPG's polyester DBU was like 72 hours. Their urethane DBC was less...(48 I think). Check your product pages of the basecoat you're using to b certain. You won't have any problems if you're within the same day, for sure. A better option would be to clear the car, wet sand, then stripe the panels and re clear. But that adds significantly to the cost.
I was able to get the car painted and let the last coat of base dry for almost an hour and no issue with the tape lifting the paint. Used the 3m fine line tape, that stuff is expensive! But worked flawlessly
Jon, you are making great progress. I have not seen anyone do stripes like you are doing. I have a concern if you will allow me. If you tape the stripes on uncured base paint, won't it damage the finish when removed? I'm asking because I don't know and have not seen this done.
The base is soft or green but it will accept taping after about 20-30 minutes of dry time it’s still very easily damaged even by a fingernail. I will do a video showing it on the hood and cowl. This is the same process I used on my trans am clone. That was 6 years ago and still looks great
@VinylVillageGarage Thank you very much for the explanation. I didn't see you do this in the previous video. Sorry I missed it. You providing so much good information for the folks that are restoring cars. Thank you!
Why not clear the entire car first? Then you can come back at anytime and sand the panels which are getting stripes. Then lay down the stripes at your leisure. And then lay some more clear over the stripes
If the rear stripes were not on the panel between back window and trunk I would do it differently. To do the stripes later I would still need to reclear the entire body shell to keep it where there is not tape or blend lines.
Thanks so much for making all these videos. They have been really informative. Great work.
Very happy to help!
Can’t wait till it’s all painted!
Spoiler alert got stage two done of the painting yesterday.
Thanks Jon , much appreciated!!!
You are welcome!

Wow that’s a lot of cars. I just got home from the trans am nationals there was 495 cars.
Our high school auto body teacher would do the stripe 1st . Tape them off. So the base paint and stripes where equal layers.
That is a plausible solution and definitely need to use good tape too. Cool idea thanks
Inspirational man !!!!
Wow thanks!
I’ll be there!
Right on!!
👍👍 it's going to look awesome 👍👍
I think so too!
It will look fantastic for sure John!!👍🏽

I will also only be there Saturday and little Sunday morning. I am sure I will see you there

@VinylVillageGarage welcome buddy
Thanks for sharing your methodology. Would you leave the hood on if you didn’t have to do the stripes?
I don’t think so. I have done that in the past but it’s makes it almost impossible to paint the inside edge of the fenders the hinges really get in the way.

You just got home. I do have some footage I will see what I can come up with for a video.
hope the air dryer works well for you Jon! Where is the TA nationals being held??
That line dryer got put to the test today as worked great! The nationals are in Dayton Ohio.
You’re the man Jon! Nice work as always! Did you paint the inside of the fenders?
Not yet, I will be when I got to install the extractors.

@@bradsrestorations1085 you didn’t miss the video. I haven’t done one yet. My car in built 6 years ago was before RUclips
I noticed your air compressor is that a 110 volt air compressor or is that a 220 is if it's a 110 how much was it and where did you get it
My compressor is 220v the line dryer is 110v. I got my compressor from Menards like 8 years ago
What day are you going?
Saturday morning and leave Sunday morning. Plan to got to Tipp city as well.
Ok see you Saturday, if needed I have truck and trailer and a garage full.
